1.1FunctionDescription
MSA100BTPeakFlowMeterisahand‐heldpulmonaryfunctionmeasuringmedicaldevice
thatmeasuresyourmaximumpossibleexhalationwhichiscalledpeakexpiratoryflow(PEF)and
forcedexpiratoryvolumein1second(FEV1).TheaccuracymeetsAmericanThoracicSociety(ATS)
Standard2005Revision.
Apeakflowmeterisusedtomeasureaperson’s“peakexpiratoryflow”,whichisasimple
measureofairflowthatcantellyouhowwellyouarebreathing.Ittellsyouhowwellairismoving
throughtheairwaysinyourlungs.ForcedExpiratoryVolume(FEV1)isameasureofthevolumeof
airexpelledin1second.Ifyouhaveabreathingconditionsuchasasthma,C.O.P.D.,orchronic
bronchitis,yourphysician(orotherlicensedhealthcareprofessional)mayrecommendthatyou
useapeakflowmetertowatchforchangesinyourairflow.Yourphysician(orlicensedhealthcare
professional)willgiveyouatreatmentplanthatwilltellyouwhatactionstotakewhenyouhavea
changeinairflow.Inaddition,youshouldrecordyourpeakflowmeasuresasrecommendedby
yourphysician(orotherlicensedhealthcareprofessional).Reviewingpeakflowmeasurescan

ThisdeviceisintendedformonitoringPEF(PeakExpiredFlowRate)andFEV1(Forced
ExpiratoryVolumeinonesecond)forpatienthomeuse.Thedeviceisdesignedforpediatricto
adultpatients.Thedeviceisintendedformonitoringrespiratoryconditionssuchasasthma.
1.4MeasuringPrinciple
Whenairflowpassesthroughturbinesensor,itmakestheleafofturbinerotate.Rotary
speedoftheleafislinearrelationshipwithairflowrate.Bythetechnologyofphotoelectric
conversion,turningoftheleafisconvertedtobepulsesignal,whichisprocessedbythemain
controlleraftersampling.ThePEFandFEV1valuearecalculatedbyanalgorithmformulaand
displayedontheLCD.

Afterpoweron,thesystemcankeepactivestatuswithinoneminute,thenitwillpoweroff
automatically.Ifpressanykeyormeasureoncemore,thesystemwillprolong1minutetopower
off.
