THE FURNACE IS SHIPPED INTWO PACKAGES
Note: The consignee is responsible for ensuring that the packageshavearrived in good condition.
Examinepackages for damages, if found,note the same on carriers' bill of lading and make a
claim tothe carrier.Eachunit is carefully inspectedbeforeleaving our factory.
Package no.1 The furnace,blower,blowermotor,pulleys,belt(assembled), air filter & cleaning
hoe.
Package no.2 1-oil burner, 1-nozzle, 1-damper motor, 2-thermostats(wood & oil).Theprimary
harness is prewired totheoil burner and consists of 1-fan limit, 1-blocked flue
sensor, 1-transformer,
1-relay, 1-J boxand cover.
INSTALLATION
The installation of this equipmentshall bein accordance with: In Canada, CSA Standard B139
"Installation Code forOil BurningEquipment" andCSA B365 InstallationCode for SolidFuel
Burning Appliances and Equipment. Inthe UnitedStates, UL391 SolidFuel and CombinationFuel
Central and supplementaryfurnaces.Electrical and mechanicalinstallationsmustconform toall local
and nationalcodes and standards as their jurisdiction may apply.Ensure to have a minimum of200
sq. inches of returnair.
CHIMNEY AND SMOKE PIPE
The specification ofthe chimney tobe used,mustcomplywith the requirement that, otherthansolid-
fuel/oil combinations and add-ons,woodburningappliancesshall notbe connected toa ventingsystem
serving an appliancevented by anothertype of fuel. Connect the furnace toan approvedsolid fuel
factory-builtchimney: in CANADA-CAN/ULC S629standard for 650°chimney, inthe UNITED
STATES-UL103Chimneys for ResidentialType and BuildingHeatingAppliances,FactoryBuilt ora
safe, clean,soundcondition,masonry chimney equippedwith an approvedliner: in CANADA-
CAN/ULC-S635-M90 Standard for LiningSystems for existingmasonry or FactoryBuiltChimneys and
Vents, inthe UNITEDSTATES-UL1777ChimneyLiners(e.g.,stainlesssteel,clay, etc.). The chimney
must be equivalent toa minimum of7" roundinsidediameter or8" round maximum. The chimney
must be capable of maintaining a negativeupdraft atall times andinall conditions.Carefullyinspect
the chimney for safety and dirt beforemakingconnections.Place the furnace as close tothe chimney
as possible.
The smokepipeshould be blue or black steel, 24ga.or heavier. Useasfew turns as possiblebetween
the furnace andthe chimney, as each 90° elbowadds 10' of restriction anda 45° elbowadds 5' of
restriction. The barometricdampershould be7" diameter andsetat -.04W.C. to open.Install the
barometricdamper a minimum of18"anda maximum of24" from the furnace breech. Avoidlong
horizontalruns of smokepipe.Maintain a minimum of Yt" rise per foot of pipe from the furnace tothe
chimney.
DONOTrunthe pipedownhillfrom the furnace tothe chimney.Confirmthat the installation
clearances aremetor exceeded. All pipejointsshould fit relatively gas tight. Secure all smokepipe
jointswiththreesheetmetalscrews in eachjoint.
DO NOT pass the smokepipesthrough a wall,floor or ceiling to reach the chimney.Remove the
smokepipe from the furnace and cleanmonthly oras necessary.
CAUTION: USE ONLY METAL DUCTS FOR THIS FURNACE.

COMBUSTION AIR
To achievesatisfactorycombustion, an adequatesupply of fresh airis required. In confined areas, a
grilled openingshall be provided. The minimum totalarea of openings is2 square feet per gallon (.60m
per 4.5L) ofoil burnt per hour.Where fans are used inthe fuel storage area, theyshould be installed
so asnotto createnegativepressures inthe roomwhere the furnace is installed.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS(OIL SECTION)
1. Mount the blocked flue sensor "Field Controls WMO-1" onthe upper-left ofthe burnermountingplate
using the nutsprovidedwith the sensor. Be careful that the mounting plategasketdoes not block the sensor.
2. Mount theoil burner inthe burneropening by means of three (3) mountingstudslocated onthe lower front
of the furnace.Carefullyinstall the gasketbeforemounting the burner.
3.Cuta hole inthe warm air plenum to allowinsertion ofthefan limitcontroltube(seepage12).Proper
height is maintained by using the bracketsupplied. Proper location is maintained by using 2 pre drilled
holes onthetop frontcasing.
4. Mount the junction boxonthe rightsidepanelusing the2 pre-drilled holeslocated near the front ofthe
furnace.
5. Installconnectors forthe blowermotor inthe holeprovided inthe right rear panel.Connectwires tothe
blower motor as shown inthe appropriate enclosedwiringdiagram for your burner model.
6. Install the furnacedisconnectswitch ina convenient & serviceablelocationoutside the furnaceroom.
7. Mount the thermostats ina convenientupstairslocation,free from drafts.Connect as shown inthe
appropriatewiringdiagrampage 8,9 or10.
8. Furnacelocation and ductworkinstallationmustconform to installationclearancesshown onthe front of
the furnace(also seethe reprint in thismanual on page 3). Place the furnace ona non-combustible floor.
Locate the furnace as close tothe chimney as possible.
9.The fuel supplytank and fuel linesshould be installed in accordancewithcodes and standardshaving
jurisdiction in your area. .
10.Theoil line maynowbe connected tothe burner. Use onlyflaredconnections(NOTFURLS) ontheoil line.
Ensure no leaks are present.Bleed the burner inthe normalmanner.CAUTION: Route theoil lines away
from the fire door. Protect the oil lines from the possibility of dropping wood on it.
11. Beforeconnecting to power (115VAC, 60Hz, 1 Phase):
a. Check all electricalconnections for tightness.
b. Check for proper grounding of furnace.
c. Check for proper electricaloperation.
12.Settheoil burner to obtain a #0 smokespot. An efficiency test maybe taken at thistime. Tests aretobe
takenwith the woodfiredoor and draftdamperclosed andthe over fire slotplugged.
13. Proper nozzles and settings for (UseFuel No.2 Furnace Oil;Flue Pressure Setting = (-.04" W.C.)

A 1" (2,5cm) minimum air spacemust be maintained under the
appliance. This canbe achieved by using six non-combustible
blocks, a minimum of 1" (2,5cm)thick x 4" (10cm)wide x 8"
(20cm)long. Onetobe placed on eachcorner andone34" (85cm)
the front on eachside.

CAUTION: Ensure a MINIMUM of 200 Sq. In. of return air back to the Furnace.
ADJUSTMENTS OF DAMPER MOTOR
AND CHAIN:
The damperchainshould be adjustedwhen the damper
door isinthe downposition. In thisposition the chain
should be adjusted so there isa smallamount of slack.
The amount of lift or opening ofthe damperdoor is
adjusted by moving thetwo pinchnuts onthe stovebolt
threadcloser or furtheraway from the lift strap. The
dampershould besetat 3/4" to 1" opening. After proper
adjustment ofthe draftchain and damperdoor the
thermostat and limitcontrolswillkeep thefire withinsafe
limits.
CA UTION: This setting should not be altered for increased
firing, for any reason.
FURNACE

NOTE: Establish a routine forthe storage of fuel, care ofthe appliance and firingtechniques.Check
daily for creosote build up untilexperienceshows how oftencleaning is necessary. Be aware that the
hotter thefire,the less creosote is deposited.Weeklycleaning maybe necessary in mildweathereven
though monthlycleaning maybe enough inthe coldermonths.Have a clearlyunderstoodplan to handle
a chimneyfire. Store wood in neat,well supportedpiles (4* minimum)away from the furnace.
NORMAL OPERATION
Whenbeing oilfired,the furnacewillcycle on callfrom theoil thermostat asa normal oil furnace.
When theoil burner starts, the wooddraftdamperwillcloseautomatically.Whenbeingwood fired,
the woodthermostatwillcause the dampermotor to open the damperdoor on call for heat,closing
when the thermostat is satisfied.Should the warm air plenumreach its highlimit of210 degrees F,or
99 degrees C,the dampermotorwillclose the damper door andtheoil burnerwill not start, the blower
will continue to operate. When the temperaturedrops to normallevels,normalcycleswill start.
NOTE: The furnace must be installed by a qualified technician currently active in the heating trade & meet
or exceed all local or national codes.
IMPORTANT: Use No. 2 furnace oil only. Use of otherfuels could damage the unit or present a serious
safety hazard.
IMPORTANT: Know the location of the emergency disconnect switch for the furnace.
IMPORTANT: If remodeling in the area of the furnace call a service technician.
INSTRUCTIONS(WOOD SECTION)
DONOT connectthisunit toan automaticstoker or sawdustburner.
Keep the furnacesmokepipes and chimneyclean. It willincrease efficiency and reduce the risk of
soot and creosote fires. Whenusinguncuredwood,clean and inspect the furnace,smokepipes and
chimney monthly oras necessary to preventsoot and creosotebuild up.
Solid fuel requires a sufficient supply ofairfor combustion and combustion airis requiredabove
the fuel bed.
DONOT store flammable materials in vicinity ofthe furnace.
OnlyBurnuntreatednaturalwood.
OnlyBurn paper to start a fire.
DO NOT LEAVE PAPER OR RAGS AROUND THE FURNACE
DONOTfillthefirebox above the bottom of the smoke baffle, located atthetop portion ofthefire door
opening.
Leave 1"of sand orashonthe bottom ofthe wood firebox.
DONOTusefluids, gasoline,oils,chemicals,etc., to start a fire.
DO NOTBURN GARBAGE,PAPER(except to start thefire),tar products,gasoline,oils,plastic, drift
wood or materialscontainingsalts or chemicals.This is extremelydangerous and willvoid the
warranty.
Fuelstoragemustconform to localordinanceshavingjurisdiction.
ASH REMOVAL
Removeashes as necessary, orat leastwhen ash build up reacheslowerdoorframe. Store ashes ina
metalcontainerwith a tight fitting lid,placed ona noncombustible floorand move outof doors
immediately.Remember ash canscontaindormant hot coals which can cause fireand severeburns.
Other wasteshould notbe placed in thiscontainer.
Keep thefire doorclosed as much as possible.
If youare primarilyusing the woodportion,operate theoil burnerweekly to ensurethat it will function
properlywhen you need it.

INSTRUCTIONS FOROUTOF CONTROLFIRES
(Caused by excessive fueling and/orsoot or creosotebuild uportoo muchdraft.)
1. Close the supply of combustion airby lowering the thermostat tothe minimumsetting and unhook
the dampermotorchain.
2. Reduce the draft by fully opening the barometricdamper.
3. Excessheat may damage the safetycontrols.Theyshould be carefully checkedbeforerestarting the
furnace.
POWERFAILUREOPERATION(EXTENDEDPERIOD)
NOTE: DO NOT operate your appliance,unless your total heating system has been designed and installed
to operate properly without electricity.
1. Remove the blowerdoor and filter.
2. Maintain the fire at Vi the normallevel.
3. Open allthe warm air registers and dampers.
4. Open the furnace roomdoor forair circulation.
5. Inspect the fire at frequentintervals to ensure safe operation.
FLUEFIRE
1. Call the Fire Department.
2. Prepare to evacuate the house.
3. Shut offthe mainpowerswitch tothe furnace.
4. Diminish the fire inthe furnace by closing all combustion air openings.
5.DONOT remove the flue pipesuntil the fire is completelyout.
6. Have the chimneyinspected and repaired if necessarybeforeusingagain.
OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS FORTHEOIL SECTION
CA UTION: Use No. 2 furnace oil only.
DO NOTUSE GASOLINE,CRANKCASE OIL, ORANYOIL CONTAININGGASOLINE.
DO NOT press the resetbutton onthe burnerrelaymorethantwice.Thencall a qualified service
technician. Keep the valveshut offiftheoil burner is shutdown foran extendedperiod of time.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START THE BURNERWHENEXCESS OILHAS ACCUMULATED,
WHEN THE FURNACE IS FULL OF VAPOR OR WHEN THE COMBUSTIONCHAMBER IS VERY
HOT.
DONOT START THE BURNER UNLESS THE BLOWER ACCESS DOOR IS SECURED IN
PLACE.
DO NOT TAMPERWITH THE FURNACE OR CONTROLS. CALL A QUALIFIEDSERVICE
TECHNICIAN.
DONOT BURNGARBAGE OR PAPER intheoil section ofthe heatingunit, and NEVERLEAVE
PAPER,RAGS OR OTHER COMBUSTIBLESaround the furnace.
DO NOT let inexperiencedpeopletamperwith or service the unit or controls.
TO START THE BURNER
1.DONOT start the burnerwhen the combustionchamber ishotor when oil vapor is present inthe
furnace.
2.See that all valves intheoil lines are open.
3. With the maincutoutswitch fortheoil burnerelectricalcircuit inthe "OFF" position, setthe
thermostat ata pointaboveroomtemperature.
4. Setthe electricswitch tothe"ON " position. Ifthe burner fails to start instantly, setthe masterswitch
tothe "OFF" position and call a qualified servicetechnician.
5.Ifthe burner starts to operate normallyleave the switch "ON" and reset the thermostat tothe desired
temperature.

TO STOP THE BURNER
1.Setthe maincutout tothe "OFF"position.
2.Setthe thermostat asfar belowroomtemperature as possible.
IFTHE BURNERFAILS TO OPERATE
Call a qualified servicetechnician. The trouble maybedueto:
1. Blown fuses inthe electricalcircuit.
2.The thermostat maybeset belowroomtemperature.
3.The combustioncontrol may require "resetting".
4.Theoil valve maybe closed.
5.Theoil supply maybetoo low.
6.The blocked flue sensor maybe tripped.
TO STOP THE BURNER FORAN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME
1.The maincutoutswitchshould besettothe "OFF"position.
2. CLOSE ALLOIL SUPPLY VALVES.
3.The burnershould be covered to protect it from dust and dampness.
4.The heatingsystemshould be checked and cleaned if necessary.
TO START THE BURNER AFTER AN EXTENDED SHUTDOWN
1.The strainer inthe pumpshould be cleaned, andifa filter is installed intheoil line, it should be
cleaned andthe filtercartridgereplaced.
2.Thefanandthe blowerhousingshould be cleaned andtheair filterreplaced.
3.The ignitionpointsshould be checked andthe nozzlecleaned & replaced.
4. Oil motor (see LUBRICATION)
5. Start the burner by following the instructionsunderparagraph "TO START THE BURNER".
6.Itis recommendedthat a qualified servicetechnician be called to clean the unit and burner and make
sure that the burner is operatingproperly. The installershould identify the emergencyshut off switch
and valves.
WHEN THE BURNER ISIN OPERATION
1. Check flame periodically, ifit becomes outof shape or smoky,call a qualified servicetechnician.
2. Whencleaning the furnaceroom or utilityroom,always stop the burner to reduce the amount of dust
and lintdrawninto the burner.
3.The electricignitionsystem andall controlsshould be checkedperiodically for reliability of operation
and adjusted if necessary.
OIL BURNER
The oil burnershould be removed at leastonceeachheatingseason,cleaned and serviced.Alsoinspect
and clean any accumulatedsoot and debris from the combustionchamber and transferduct.Inspect and
replace the burnergasket if necessary.
AIR FILTER
The filtershould be inspected at leastmonthly and replaced(20" x 24"x 1")as necessary. To replace
filter, turn off power to unit,remove rear accesspanel,remove old filter and replacewithnew,replace
rear accesspanel and restore power.Have the completeheatingsystemchecked and serviced bya
qualified service technician atthe start of eachheating season, at least.

OIL FILTER
The cartridgeshould be replaced at leastonce a year. The filter bodyshould be thoroughlycleaned
before installing a new cartridge.
LUBRICATION(MOTOR & BLOWERBEARINGS)
1. Only the motorrequireslubrication.
2.Onlya goodgradeofdetergent free (#10motoroil)automobileengineoilshouldbeused.
3. Twiceeachyear one teaspoon ofoil should be pouredslowlyinto theoil cup.
TO CLEAN THE STRAINER
1.Oil valvesbetween the tank andthe burnershould be closed.
2.The strainercovershould be removed.
3.The strainerbasketshould be taken outand washedwithkerosene.
4. The strainerbasket and coversshould be reassembledwithgasketsthat are clean andin good
condition.
TO RESET THE CONTROLS
The CombustionControlSystem is designed to insuresafeoperation oftheoil burner. The controls
consist ofan electricalrelayoperating in conjunctionwith a flame detectormounted ontheoil pipe of
the drawerassembly ofthe burner.When forany reason the burner fails to ignitepromptly, the control
will stop the burner. After beingshut offin thismanner, the burnercannotagain be starteduntil the
control is "RESET". The burnermountedrelay is attached tothe burnerhousing andis reset by
pressingthenreleasing.CAUTION: Only try this once and then call a qualified service technician.
The blocked flue sensor is designed to shut offthe burner and close the damperdoor inthe eventthat
thefluehas becomeblocked.Whenthis has happened, the burnercannot be startedagain andthe
damperdoor will not openuntil the sensor has been reset. Pushing inthered button,which is accessed
through the hole inthe front ofthe sensor, resets the sensor. CAUTION: Only try this once and then call
a qualified service technician.
CARE OFTHE FURNACEWHEN NOTINUSE
When the furnace isoutof service foran extendedperiod of time , clean the smokepipethoroughly.
Carefully and thoroughlyclean the chimney, firebox,andany partwhich has been in contactwith hot
gases.This is extremelyimportant as rusting and corrosionoccurwhen the furnace is idle. Inthe fall,
before the heatingseason starts or after any extendedshutdown, be sure to seal all jointstightly and
replacegaskets if necessary.
GENERALMAINTENANCEPOINTERS
1. Keep the furnace heatexchangerclean.Soot isa nonconductor of heat. A dirty furnace requiresmore
oil to heat a housethan a cleanone.
2.The smokepipeshould be taken offat leastonce a year and thoroughlycleaned ofall soot.
CAUTION: Ensure that the furnace, flue pipe and chimney are cleaned at the end of the heating season
to minimize corrosion during the summer months or during any extended shutdown period. The furnace,
flue pipe, draft inducer (if used) and chimney must be in good condition.
CAUTION: DO NOT EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR BURNER.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR REPLACEMENT, CLEANING
OR REMOVAL OFASH BAFFLE
Frominside the woodfireboxremove two stainlesssteel cotter pins. Theash baffle cannowbe removed
from the2 supportstraps by pullingdownward.
REPLACE IF NECESSAR Y
REPLACEMENT
Replace ash bafflewithroundedsidetowards thefire door andtheflanges pointed up, over thetwo
support straps,through the openingsprovided intheash baffle. Replace thetwo stainlesssteelcotter
pins and spread thetwo legs to preventfallingout.
CAUTION: DO NOT START A FIRE WITH THE ASH BAFFLE REMOVED!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLEANING THE FS140
COMBINATION WOOD/OIL FURNACE
1.At leastyearly oras necessaryremove theoil combustionchambercover,clean and service theoil
burner and combustionchamber.
2. Removeashes from the woodfirebox as necessary orat leastwhenthey are levelwith the doorframe.
'Leave 1"or 1-1/2" ofashinthe bottom ofthe firebox for proper combustion.Alsocheck the smoke
baffle locatedover the inside flue collaropening to ensure the passages are open for venting the
products of combustion.
3. Removesheetmetal screws fromclean out casing(Panellocatedabove the woodfire door). Thiswill
expose the threeclean out covers.
4. Remove the three brass nutslocated inthe center of eachclean out cover. Use care in removingcovers
to preventdamage tothe gaskets.Thoroughlyclean outthe exposedtubes. Itis necessary to remove
the smokepipe to clean the backcrossovertube.Thesetubesshould be checkedweeklyuntil a proper
cleaningcycle is established. Aftercleaning, replace the covers in reverse order, making sure the
gaskets arein goodcondition(replace if necessary).
5. Inspect theair filtermonthly and replace as necessarywith 20"x 24"x 1" filter.
