1. This pump is for use with 115Vrms nominal, and for pool pump applications ONLY. Connection to the wrong
voltage, or use in other application may cause damage to equipment or personal injury.
2. Always disconnect power to the pool pump at the circuit breaker before servicing the pump. Failure to do so could
result in death or serious injury to serviceman, pool users, or others due to electric shock.
3. All electrical wiring MUST be in conformance with all applicable local codes, regulations, and the National Electric
Code® (NEC®).
4. In accordance with the National Electric Code® (NEC®), this unit must be connected only to a supply circuit that is
protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI).
5. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, replace any damaged cord immediately.

Hair Entrapment - Hair can be entangled in suction outlet cover.
Body Suction Entrapment - A differential pressure applied to a large portion of the body or limbs
can result in an entrapment.
Disembowelment - A negative pressure applied directly to the intestines through
an unprotected suction outlet sump or suction outlet cover which is damaged, broken,
cracked, missing, or unsecured can result in evisceration/disembowelment.
Mechanical Entrapment - There is potential for jewelry, swimsuits, hair decorations, fingers, toes,
or knuckles to be caught in an opening of a suction outlet cover, resulting in mechanical
entrapment.
2. Trapped air in the system can cause the filter lid to be blown off, which can result in death, serious injury, or
property damage. Be sure all air is properly purged out of the system before operating.
3. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR TO PRESSURE TEST OR CHECK FOR LEAKS.
WARNING: RISK OF ENTRAPMENT HAZARD.
Pool and spa pumps produce high levels of suction, which can pose extreme danger if a person comes in close
proximity to an open pool or spa drain or if a drain cover is loose, cracked, broken, or missing:
WARNING:
1. When outlets are small enough to be blocked by a person, a minimum of two functioning suction outlets per
pump must be installed. Suction outlets in the same plane (i.e. floor or wall), must be installed a minimum of three
feet (3’) [0.91 meter] apart, as measured from near point to near point.
2. Dual suction fittings shall be placed in such locations and distances to avoid “dual blockage” by a user.
3. Dual suction fittings shall not be located on seating areas or on the backrest for such seating areas.
4. Failure to keep suction outlet components clear of debris, such as leaves, dirt, hair, paper, and other material can
result in an increased potential for suction entrapment.
5. Installation of a vacuum release or vent system, which relieves entrapping suction, is recommended.
WARNING: RISK OF PRESSURE HAZARD.
1. When pressure testing a system with water, air is often trapped in the system during the filling process. This air
will compress when the system is pressurized. Should the system fail, this trapped air can propel debris at a high
speed and cause injury. Every effort to remove trapped air must be taken, including opening the bleed valve on the
filter and loosening the pump basket lid while filling the pump.
NOTICE: Do not start pump dry! Running the pump dry for any length of time will cause severe damage
for the pump and will void the warranty.

2. General Information
2.1 Introduction
This manual contains information for the proper installation and operation of the Black & Decker
variable speed pump family. The instructions in this manual MUST be followed precisely. Black & Decker
Variable Speed Pumps can be run from 1000 RPM to 3450 RPM. This allows you to select the most appropriate
speed for your application.
2.2 Pump Overview
The perfect choice for all types of pools, the Variable Speed Pump was specifically designed to be
your best choice for a variety of in-ground pools. Thick walled body parts, a heavy duty TEFC motor, and
highly engineered hydraulics make this rugged and tested design perfect for any pool, spa, water feature, or
fountain.
2.3 Controller Overview
The Variable Speed Pump uses a premium efficiency variable speed motor that provides tremendous program
flexibility in terms of motor speed and duration settings. The pump is intended to run at the lowest speeds needed
to maintain a sanitary environment, which in turn minimizes energy consumption. Pool size, the presence of
additional water features, chemicals used to maintain sanitary conditions, and local environmental factors will
impact optimal programming necessary to maximize energy conservation.
The integrated electronics interface controls the speed settings as well as the run durations. The pump can
operate at speeds ranging between 1000 and 3450 RPM and will operate within the voltage range of 115Vrms
at either 50 or 60Hz input frequency. Program customization may require some trial-and-error to determine the
most satisfactory settings as dictated by the conditions. In most cases, setting the pump at the lowest speed
for the longest duration is the best strategy to minimize energy consumption. However, conditions may require
running the pump at a higher speed for some duration of time each day to maintain proper filtration to achieve
satisfactory sanitation.
Note: Optimize the pump to suit individual pool conditions. Specific conditions including pool size, other devices,
features, and environmental factors can all impact the optimal settings.

3. Installation and Wiring
3.1 Preparation Guide
Upon receipt of the pump, check the carton for damage. Open the carton and check the pump for concealed
damage, such as cracks, dents, or a bent base. If damage is found, contact the shipper or distributor where
the pump was purchased.
Inspect the contents of the carton and verify that all parts are included. See Section 2.7, Product Contents.
3.2 Pump location
The Black & Decker Above-Ground pump MUST be installed below the pool water line.
Place pump on solid foundation which provides a rigid and vibration-free support so that it is readily accessible for
service and maintenance.
Install the pump in a well-ventilated location protected from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
Protect the pump against flooding, and prevent foreign objects from clogging air circulation around motor. All motors
generate heat that must be removed by providing proper ventilation.

3.3 Plumbing
When connecting pipework to pump with threaded ports, it is recommended that thread seal tape be used.
Hard-plumbed pipes must have proper solvent-weld connections. Flexible hose connections must be tightened
properly. If the suction line is not sealed correctly, the pump will not prime properly and will pump small volumes of
water or none at all.
Piping - Flexible Hose, PVC, or Reinforced Hose are all acceptable piping methods.
Before starting the pump for the first time, remove the clear lid. (Turn lid ring counter-clockwise to remove.) Fill
strainer tank with water until it is level with the suction inlet. Replace lid with locking ring. Hand-tighten the lid to make
an air-tight seal. DO NOT use any tools to tighten the lid.
To avoid pump strain, support suction and outlet independently. Place supports near pump. To avoid strain left by a
gap at last connection, start all piping at pump and run pipe AWAY from pump.
For pump outlet use 1-1/2" PVC pipe or reinforced hose. For pump suction on ALL models, use 1-1/2"
reinforced hose. Increase size if a long run is needed. For pipe larger than port, use reducing fitting in strainer port.
NEVER use suction pipe SMALLER than pump suction connections. Suction pipe inlet must be lower than pump inlet
port.
Use the fewest number of fittings as possible. Each additional fitting has the effect of moving the equipment farther
away from the water.
3.4 Electrical
•Install all equipment in accordance with the National Electrical code and all applicable local codes and ordinances.
•A means for disconnection must be incorporated in the fixed wiring in accordance with the wiring rules.
WARNING: Ground and bond pump before connecting to electrical power supply. Failure to ground
and bond pump can cause serious or fatal electrical shock hazard. Do NOT ground to a gas supply line. To
avoid dangerous or fatal electrical shock, turn OFF power to pump before working on electrical connections.
Fire Hazard - match supply voltage to pump nameplate voltage. Insure that the electrical supply available agrees
with the pump’s voltage, phase, and cycle, and that the wire size is adequate for the amps rating and distance
from the power source. Use copper conductors only.

RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR ELECTROCUTION. The Variable Speed Pump must be installed by
a licensed or certified electrician or a qualified service professional in accordance with the National Electrical
Code and all applicable local codes and ordinances. Improper installation will create an electrical hazard which
could result in death or serious injury to users, installers, or others due to electrical shock, and may also cause
damage to property.
Always disconnect power to the pump at the circuit breaker before servicing the pump. Failure to do so
could result in death or serious injury to service people, pool users, or others due to electric shock
and/or property damage.
Read all servicing instructions before working on the pump.

3.5 Electrical Specifications
Voltage: 115VAC, 50/60Hz, Single Phase
Speed Range: 1000 - 3450 rpm
Use copper conductors only. For indoor & outdoor use. Connect pump to a 15 amp branch circuit in accordance with
local codes, regulations, and the National Electric Code (NEC). A disconnecting means located at least 5 feet from
the inside wall of the pool, spa, or hot tub must be provided.
3.6 Voltage
Voltage at pump MUST NOT be more than 10% above or below nameplate rated voltage, or components
may overheat, causing overload tripping and reduced component life. If voltage is less than 90% (104VAC) or more
than 110% (126VAC) of rated voltage (115VAC) when pump is running at full load, consult the power company.
3.7 Grounding and Bonding
Install, ground, bond, and wire pump in accordance with local or National Electrical Code requirements.
Permanently ground pump. Use green ground terminal provided under access plate; use size and type wire required
by code. Connect ground terminal to electrical service ground.
Bond the motor using the provided external lug.
Bond pump to pool structure. Bonding will connect all metal parts within and around the pool with a continuous wire.
Bonding reduces the risk of a current passing between bonded metal objects, which could potentially cause electrical
shock if grounded or shorted. Reference NEC codes for all wiring standards including, but not limited to, grounding,
bonding, and general wiring procedures.
The motor frame must be grounded to a reliable grounding point using a solid copper conductor, No. 8 AWG or
larger. In Canada, No. 6 AWG or larger must be used. If the pump is installed within five (5) feet of the inside
walls of the swimming pool, spa, or hot tub.
3.8 Wiring
WARNING: All electrical wiring MUST conform to local codes, regulations, and National Electric Code (NEC).
Pump MUST be permanently connected to circuit. If other lights or appliances are also on the same circuit, be sure to
add their amp loads before calculating wire and circuit breaker sizes. Use the circuit breaker as the master On-Off
switch.

3.9 Control Panel Overview
Keypad Navigation
1. Button “LOW/ ”: used to select the fixed LOW speed or to decrease speed while in the programming mode.
2. Button “MED/OK”: used to select the fixed MEDIUM speed or to confirm/save parameters while in the
programming mode.
3. Button “HIGH/ ”: used to select the fixed HIGH speed or to increase speed while in the programming mode.
4. LED display window: displays the current speed of the motor, or error code message.
5. “SET” button: used to enter the programming mode or to reset the control.
6. Button “ ”: used to STOP the motor.
7. Error light: illuminates when there is a fault detected.
8. Power light: illuminates when power turns on.
Starting the Pump
To start the pump press the button “1”, “2”, or “3” to select the preset fixed speed. If the pump starts
from standby mode, it starts up and subsequently runs with the selected fixed speed.
The default speed settings are as follows.
Speed 1 = 1600 rpm
Speed 2 = 2600 rpm
Speed 3 = 3450 rpm
The pump will automatically change from selected speed “3” to speed “1” after 2 hours of run time.
The pump will automatically change from selected speed “2” to speed “1” after 24 hours of run time.
If power is connected to the Variable Speed Pump motor, pressing any of the
following buttons referred to in this section could result in the motor starting. Failure to recognize this
could result in personal injury or damage to equipment.

3.10 Display Power Saving Mode
The LED display turns off after 3 minutes if there is no action detected from the keypad.
3.11 Stopping the Pump
If the pump is stopped normally by pressing the Button“ ”, the “POWER” LED flashes and the LED display window
shows “OFF”. If the pump is stopped by a detected fault, the “POWER” LED flashes and the LED display window
will show an error code number. Refer to the error code chart for the error code number shown and its description of
the fault detected.
3.12 Programming the Priming Speed and Time
The pump is factory set with a default priming cycle of 3450 RPM for 2 minutes. The following steps show how
to change these parameters:
1. With power applied to the pump, press the “ ” button. This will stop the pump if it is running, and the LED
window will display “OFF.”
2 . Press and hold the “SET” button for at least 3 seconds. The priming power level should start flashing in the LED
window.
3. Press the “LOW/ ” button to decrease the speed or the “HIGH/ ” button to increase the speed. The speed
decreases or increases by 50 rpm.
4. Press the “OK” button to save the priming power level setting. The priming time will then begin flashing in the LED
window. To cancel and return to the previous mode, press the “SET” button.
5. Press the “LOW/ ” button to decrease the time or the “HIGH/ ” button to increase the time in increments of 1
minute. Priming time range is 0-10 minutes. To cancel without changing the priming time, press the “SET” button.
6. Press the “OK” button to save the priming time setting and exit the programming sequence.
NOTE: Setting the priming time to 0 minutes will disable the priming cycle.
3.13 To Change the Default Preset Speed Settings
Press the button “1”, “2”, or “3” for the fixed speed which is to be changed. The LED window displays the current
speed, then press and hold the “SET” button for at least 3 seconds until the speed displayed in the LED window
begins to flash. The speed can then be changed using the “LOW/ ” or “HIGH/ ” buttons. The speed decreases or
increases by 50 rpm. The upper limit of the speed is 3450 rpm and the lower limit is 1000 rpm. To save the set
speed, confirm with the “OK” button. To cancel and return to the original speed press the “SET” button.
3.14 Lockout Keypad Programming
The keypad programming can be locked out for security to avoid unauthorized changes. The lock out function is
initialized by pressing the “ ” and “SET” buttons simultaneously. Once the lock out security function is activated, a
“.” (period) mark will be displayed at the right side of the LED display window. To unlock the security lockout
function, just repeat the same operation as above.
3.15 Recover Factory Default Speed Settings
The motor can be reset to the factory default speed settings by pressing the “SET” button for at least 15
seconds then releasing it. The three LED’s for the fixed speeds and the “POWER” LED turn on.

4. Maintenance
This pump requires little or no service other than reasonable care and periodic cleaning of the strainer
basket. DO NOT strike basket to clean. When cleaning the basket inspect the lid O-ring for damage and replace if
necessary.
Pumps have self-lubricating motor bearings and shaft seals. No lubrication is necessary.
Keep motor clean. Ensure motor air vents are free from obstruction to avoid damage. Do NOT use water to
hose off motor.
The mechanical seal may become worn or loose over the course of time, depending on the running time and water
quality. If water continually leaks out, a new mechanical seal should be fitted. After long periods of no
operation (seasonal storage, etc., the pump must be checked for ease of rotation while it is switched off.
Occasionally, shaft seals must be replaced, due to wear or damage. Replace with genuine seal assembly kit.
Detailed instructions for removing and replacing the mechanical seal begin on page 12. See “6. Shaft Seal
Change Instructions” in this manual.
5. Storage/Winterization
NOTICE: The pump must be protected when freezing temperatures are expected. Allowing the pump to freeze
will cause severe damage and void the warranty.
WARNING: To avoid dangerous or fatal electrical shock hazard, turn OFF power to motor before draining
pump. Failure to disconnect power may result in serious personal injury or death.
Drain all water from pump and piping when expecting freezing temperatures or when storing pump for a long time (see
instructions below. Gravity drain system as far as possible.
Keep motor dry and covered during storage. To avoid condensation/corrosion problems, do NOT cover or wrap pump
with plastic film or bags.
5.1 Storing Pump For Winterization
1. Drain water level below all inlets to the pool.
2. Remove drain plugs and strainer cover from strainer housing. (See “Parts Diagram” in section 8.0 of this manual
for pump component locations.)
3. Disconnect pump from mounting pad, wiring (after power has been turned OFF), and piping.
4. Once the pump is fully drained of water, re-install the strainer cover and drain plugs. Store pump in a dry area.
6. Shaft Seal Change Instructions
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS
The National Electrical Code requires either a three (3) foot maximum twist-lock cord set with a GFCI
protected receptacle or hard wire (conduit) connection for swimming pool pump installation. When
servicing electrical equipment, basic safety precautions should always be observed including the following.
Failure to follow instructions may result in injury.
WARNING:
1.To reduce risk of injury, do not permit children to use this product.
2.Disconnect all electrical power service to pump before beginning shaft seal replacement.

3. Only qualified personnel should attempt rotary seal replacement. Contact your local authorized Dealer or service
center if you have any questions.
4. Do not use extension cords.
Refer to Figure 8-1 for pump component locations. Exercise extreme care in handling both the rotating and the
stationary sections of the two-part replacement seal. Foreign matter or improper handling will easily scratch the
graphite and ceramic sealing surfaces.
6.1 Shaft Seal Change Procedure
1. Shut off water flow to pump by closing appropriate valves or by plugging both the skimmer outlet port and return
port to pool. Disconnect piping or hoses from the motor/pump assembly.
2. Unscrew seven (7) screws (#10) and remove pump strainer housing (#4) AND diffuser (#7), exposing the impeller.
3. Rotate the impeller in a counterclockwise direction and remove it from the motor shaft.
4. Note how the steel spring section of the old seal is positioned on impeller hub and remove it by pulling from the
impeller.
5. Remove motor fan cover. Then loosen four (4) motor through bolts from the back of motor and remove pump
housing/shroud from the front of the motor.
6. Remove the ceramic stationary portion of the old seal by pressing the white ceramic seat out of the pump housing
recess. If assembly is tight, tap lightly from the “motor” side.
7. Clean and lubricate the impeller stem and the pump housing recess with a dilute solution of non-granulated liquid-
type soap. Do not use petroleum or silicone lubricants as these can contribute to seal leakage.
8. Press the new rotating portion of the seal assembly onto the impeller stem with the polished black graphite surface
facing away from the impeller.
9. Carefully press the stationary ceramic portion of the seal into the recess of the pump housing/shroud, with the
polished flat surface facing out.
10. Carefully insert the motor shaft through the pump housing/shroud and align with white ceramic stationary
seal assembly in place and secure the motor to pump housing/shroud with four (4) motor through bolts removed in
step #5. Be sure motor base and pump discharge port are positioned properly. Alternately tighten the motor through
bolts until the pump housing is secure. Make certain motor shaft turns freely before proceeding then re-attach motor
fan cover.
11. Screw the impeller (clockwise) with the rotating portion of seal in place onto the motor shaft. Hand-tighten
the impeller in place.
12. Clean (replace if necessary) the O-ring and replace on pump cover. Assemble the pump strainer housing (#4)
AND diffuser (#7) to the pump housing with the seven (7) screws removed in step #2. Tighten screws alternately and
evenly.
13. Reconnect pump to the piping or hoses provided. Open all valves and make sure that the pump strainer housing
is full of water before restarting the pump.

7. Troubleshooting
Diagnosing certain symptoms may require close interaction with, or in close proximity to, components
that are energized with electricity. Contact with electricity can cause death, personal injury, or property
damage. When trouble shooting the pump, diagnostics involving electricity should be cared for by
a licensed professional.
WARNING
Problem Possible Cause Corrective Action
Pump failure.
Pump will not prime - Air leak, too much air.
Pump will not prime - Not enough water.
Pump stainer gasket is clogged.
Pump strainer gasket is defective.
Check suction piping and valve glands on any suction
gate valves. Secure lid on pump strainer pot and be
sure lid gasket is in place. Check water level to be
sure skimmer is not drawing air.
Be sure the suction lines, pump, strainer, and pump
volute are full of water. Be sure valve on suction line
is working and open (some systems do not have
valves). Check water level to make sure water is
available through skimmer.
Clean pump strainer pot.
Replace gasket.
Reduced capacity and/or
head.
Air pockets or leaks in suction line.
Clogged impeller.
Pump strainer clogged.
Check suction piping and valve glands on any suction
gate valves. Secure lid on pump strainer pot and be
sure lid gasket is in place. Check water level to be
sure skimmer is not drawing air.
Turn off electrical power to the pump.
Disassemble (see page 13, ‘6.1.Shaft Seal Change
Procedure’) Clean debris from impeller. If debris cannot be
removed, complete the following steps:
1. Remove left hand thread anti-spin bolt and o-ring.
2. Remove, clean, and reinstall impeller.

7.1 Errors and Alarms
If an alarm is triggered the drive’s LCD screen will display the fault code text and the Variable Speed Pump will stop running.
Disconnect power to the pump and wait until the keypad LEDs have all turned off. At this point, reconnect power to the
pump. If the error has not cleared then proper troubleshooting will be required. Use the error description table below to begin
troubleshooting.

E-16--Communication Link between the HMI and Motor control has been lost: Check the jacketed wire on the back side
of the keypad inside the drive top cover. Ensure that the 5 pin connector is properly plugged into the socket and that there is no
damage to the cable.
E-01,02,03,04,05,06,07,09,10,24--Internal Errors: If this error displays multiple times, then there may be a problem with
the pump’s rotating assembly. Please disassemble the pump and investigate to see if there is a problem with the impeller or
mechanical seal. See page 13, ‘6.1 Shaft Seal Change Procedure’ for instructions for disassembling the pump.
E-08--Absolute AC Under Voltage Detected: This indicates that the supply voltage has dropped below the operating range of
95v. This could be caused by normal voltage variation and will clear itself. Otherwise there could be excess voltage sag caused
by improper installation or improper supply voltage.
E-14-- Module overheating: Should be caused by high ambient temperature or overload.

Blue Torrent Pool products warrants this product to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of three (3)
years following the date of purchase.
This limited warranty does not cover failures due to abuse, accidental damage, or when repairs have been made or attempted
by anyone other the authorized Pump Service Centers.
A defective product meeting the guarantee conditions set forth herein will be replaced or repaired at no charge in either of two
ways:
The first, which will result in exchanges only, is to return the product to the retailer from whom it was purchased (provided that
the store is a participating retailer). Returns should be made within the time period of the retailer’s policy for exchanges. Proof

2. Siempre desconecte la bomba para piscinas en el interruptor de circuitos directamente antes del mantenimiento
de la bomba. Si no cumple con esto, puede dar como resultado la muerte o una lesión severa a los empleados,
aquellos que usen la piscina y demás debido a una descarga eléctrica.
3. Todo el cableado eléctrico DEBE estar en conformidad con los códigos locales aplicables, las regulaciones, y el
Código Eléctrico Nacional ® (NEC ® por sus siglas en inglés).
4. Para reducir el riesgo de una descarga eléctrica, reemplace cualquier cable que esté dañado inmediatamente.
