16. Derrick
Note: This Derrick is actually called a “Steel Stiff Leg
Derrick”.
Built by American Hoist & Derrick Company St. aul
Minnesota these cranes were pretty standard equip-
ment for hoisting duties. They were powered by either a
steam or electric winch & were designed to be very mo-
bile. They could be assembled & broken-down in a mat-
ter of hours if needed. Depending on the size, they
could lift anywhere from 5 to 50 tons.

This is the Cage Mast looking from front to
rear. Note the positions of the ladders as you
build the structure. This is what they should
look like when finished.

Note: How to make the Cage Webbing fit together
perfectly.
Layout the part on a flat surface. Using a dowel,
gently begin rolling back and forth across the part.
Once you begin the rolling, apply gentle pressure
downward until the part begins to curl. Continue to
roll back and forth until the part almost completely
curls back upon itself.
Now take the ends and tack them together. Once
you have the ends all lined-up, finish gluing until
you form a cone-shaped part.
