Air Conditioning / Heating: Automatic Climate Control
Cooling the Interior of your X5:
To Get Max Cold:
• Press the button “Max*” ③.
• The air conditioning and re-circulation are turned on and the fan blows at
maximum speed out of center vents until cancelled.
To Cancel Max Cold:
• Press the “Max*” button again and the previous climate control settings
return.
• Or, press the “Auto” ②button.
• Fan speed and air vent settings are automatically adjusted for maximum
efficiency and comfort to reach and maintain the desired temperature.
Heating the Interior of your X5:
To Get Max Heat:
• Direct the airflow to the footwell vents ①and to the windows ⑧.
• Set your desired temperature.
• Set the fan speed to high.
To Cancel Max Heat:
• Press the “Auto” button.
• Fan speed and air vent settings are automatically adjusted for maximum efficiency and comfort to reach and
maintain the desired temperature.
To Defrost:
• Press the defrost button to defrost front windows.
• Press the rear defrost button ④to defrost the rear window.
To Keep Windows Free of Condensation:
• For condensation on the inside of the windows, press the air conditioning button ⑤and direct the airflow toward the
windows.
• For condensation on the outside of the windows (on hot, humid days), direct the airflow away from the windows.
To Set the Desired Temperature:
• Use the up or down arrow buttons ⑦, selectively for driver and passenger, until the desired temperature is displayed.

To Set the Fan Speed:
• Press the “+” or“–” side of the fan speed toggle button ②.
• You can override the automatic fan speed any time by changing the fan speed. Your fan is now blowing at your set
speed, regardless of cooling or heating requirements.
To Set the Vent Selections:
• Press one, or a combination, of the vent selection buttons ①.
• You can override the automatic vent selections by pressing these vent buttons to direct airflow to your preference.
Your setting will be retained until you either select “Auto” or“Max*” or“Defrost”.
Rotary Temperature Dial (noted in the picture by the snowflake):
• If you have the climate control set to a warm temperature but you would like cooler air near your face, set this dial in
the blue range.
• The air from the center vents is controlled more by this dial than by the climate control.
• For warmer air, turn this dial toward red.
Car Key Memoryfor Climate Control:
• Key memory can be set by a BMW center to retain individual key settings for climate control.
• If this feature is active in your vehicle, you should first press the unlock button when entering an unlocked vehicle
so that the key being used can be recognized, and any new climate control settings stored. If the unlock button is
not pressed and the climate control settings are changed, the next time the car is locked and unlocked, the
settings will return to the previous setting.

• Press the re-circulate button ①and the air conditioning k button.
• You may alter the temperature, fan speed or vent selection at any time.

• Turn the airflow dial ④to direct air to the footwell vents and to the windows.

• Set the airflow dial ④to defrost.
• Set the fan speed ⑤completely to the right.
• Switch on rear window defroster .
To Keep Windows Free of Condensation:

button ⑤and direct the airflow toward the windows.
• For condensation on the outside of the windows (on hot, humid days), direct
the airflow away from the windows.
To Set the Vent Selections:
• Use the rotary airflow dial ④.
• Place the rotary dial in between two settings to direct airflow through more than
one set of vents.

To Close:
• Using the handle, pull the cover toward the rear of the vehicle and hook the tabs
in the rear holders ①.
To Open:
• Unhook the tabs from the rear holders j and push toward the front of the
vehicle.
To Remove the Cover from the Vehicle:
• Unhook the cover from the rear holders ①.
• Push the entire cargo cover toward the front of the vehicle.
• Using both hands on one side of the cover, squeeze and push forward ②; then tilt
the cover up and out ③.
• Repeat this for the other side of the cover.
To Reinstall Cover:
• Place the cargo cover ends in the retainers by tilting the side nearest to the rear
seat in first and then pressing down the other side until it is secured.
Cargo Cover:

Cup Holders:
Front:
• To access the cup holder, slide the cover back and remove the compartment for storing pens.
Rear:
• Press “in” and release to open the cup holder.
• Close cup holder by pushing it inward.
•DO NOT use the cup holder as a step. Make sure the cup holder is closed before allowing passengers to enter and
exit the rear seating area.

Fuel Cap:
After Refueling:
• Make sure the fuel cap is fully closed by turning clockwise until you hear a click.
• If the fuel cap is loose or missing, the “service engine soon” light will illuminate.
• Some models may have a “check filler cap” or“fuel tank open” message displayed in the instrument cluster. Check
and correctly install the fuel cap if this message appears.

To Program with Original Hand Held Remote:
• Turn the key to position two (ignition on).
• Clear the BMW Universal Transmitter memory by pressing and holding
button 1 and button 3 simultaneously on the transmitter until the light flashes
rapidly ④(approximately 20 seconds).
• Hold your original hand held remote n no more than 2” away from the
transmitter.
• Press and hold the button from your remote control and one of the preset
buttons (1, 2 or 3) on the transmitter.
• The light m will first flash slowly and then rapidly. You can release now because
this indicates the programming was successfully completed.
• Press the button you programmed and the device will operate.
To Program a Garage Door Opener with a Rolling Code:
• Turn the key to position two (ignition on).
• Clear the BMW Universal Transmitter memory by pressing and holding button 1
and button 3 simultaneously on the transmitter until the light flashes rapidly ④
(approximately 20 seconds).
• Locate the conversion code button on the opener main control unit you are trying
to program from.
• Press and hold this button for two seconds.
• Press and hold the button on the transmitter you wish to program for two
seconds.
• Press the button you programmed and the device will operate.

Liftgate/Tailgate:
To Open:
• Press the button under the liftgate and pull upward. You may also press the liftgate button located inside the
vehicle .
• Then press the button on the tailgate and lower it.
To Close:
• Lift the tailgate back to the original position and close forcefully.
• Then pull the liftgate down using the handles and again close forcefully.
• Both parts must be tightly sealed to ensure no rattling or wind noise is heard. A light will illuminate or a
message will appear in the instrument cluster, the interior lights will stay illuminated and a rattling or wind
noise may be heard if the liftgate/tailgate is not closed properly.

Mirror Adjustments:
• If the Left/Right selection switch for the mirror is put in the left position and the gear selector is in reverse, the
passenger side mirror will automatically tilt downward to aid you with reversing.
• If the selection switch is in the right position and the gear selector is in reverse, the passenger side mirror will not tilt.
• To make the mirror return to its original position, shift out of reverse or place the left/right selector in the right
position.

To Play a CD (if equipped with a CD changer):
• Place CD in the changer and then press “Mode” until “CD” is displayed.
• The numbered presets ⑦allow you to pick which CD to start.
•Press3or 4to search through the tracks.
• Press and hold 3or 4to fast forward/rewind though the tracks.
To Enter a Destination in the Navigation:
• Press the “Menu” button and turn the knob ④until GPS-Navigation is highlighted.
• Select GPS by pressing this knob “in.” A valid map CD must be in the GPS computer for this to operate.
• To switch back to the radio screen, press the toggle button ②.
• Please refer to the separate navigation owner’s manual for more information.
To Turn on the Radio:
• Press the knob ①.
• You may tune the radio by using 3or 4③or any of the six preset
buttons ⑦.
To Play a Cassette:
• Press eject ⑤so the radio panel will be lowered and insert the
cassette.
• Pressing eject again to places the radio panel back in its original
position.
• Press “Mode” until “Tape” is displayed.
•Press34 to switch to the other side of the tape.
•Press3or 4to search for other tracks.
•Press3or 4twice to fast forward/rewind though the tracks.
•Press3or 4again to cancel fast forward/rewind.
Navigation System (if equipped):

To U n l o c k :
• Press button 1 to unlock drivers door and the fuel door.
• Press button 1 again to unlock all other doors.
• This function can be changed by your BMW center so that all doors unlock
simultaneously on the first press of button 1.
To Lock and Arm Alarm:
• Press button 2.
• To deactivate the interior motion sensors, press button 2 again immediately after
locking.
To Switch on Interior Lamps from Outside of the Vehicle:
• After the vehicle is locked wait 10 seconds and then press button 2 again.
To Open all Windows and Sunroof from Outside of the Vehicle:
• Press and hold button 1.
• You may also manually do this by putting the key in the keyhole, turn to the left
and hold the key in the “unlock” position.
To Close all Windows and Sunroof from Outside of the Vehicle:
• Place key in keyhole, turn to the right and hold the key in the “lock” position.
To Open the Tailgate from Outside of the Vehicle:
• Press button 3.
To Set off the Alarm or“Panic Mode”:
• When car is locked and armed, press and hold button 3 for more than two
seconds.
• Press button 1 to switch off the alarm.
• This may open the tailgate so be sure to check it after you switch off the alarm.

Roller Sun Blinds (if equipped):
• Grasp the center tab ①and raise the roller sun blind.
• Place the sun blind into the designated clips ②.
•DoNOT open the window with the sun blinds up while driving. The wind will damage the sun blind.

To Clean the Front Windshield:
• Pull the wiper lever toward yourself.
• If you have the “Activity” package, the special wash program cleans the windshield
and the headlamps by pushing the“S” button on the end of the lever to the left.
Rain Sensor (if equipped):
• Push lever up into position one.
• The rotary dial controls the sensitivity of the rain sensor.
• The rain sensor will reduce the wiping frequency when it stops detecting liquid on
the front windshield.
• If you leave the lever in this position and the sensor detects water, the wipers will
automatically activate. If the ignition is switched off and then on, moving the
wiper lever to position zero and then back to position one will reactivate the rain
sensor.
Activate Rear Wiper:
• Push the lever away from yourself.
• The rear wiper wipes intermittently.
• When the gear selector is in reverse, the rear wiper will wipe continuously.
To Clean the Rear Window:
• Push the lever past the activation position for the rear wiper, and hold the lever.
• Release when clean.
