BMW iDrive User manual

WELCOME TO BMW.
Owner's Manual.
Thank you for choosing a BMW.
The more familiar you are with the vehicle, the better control you will have
on the road. We therefore strongly suggest the following:
Read this Owner's Manual before starting off in your new BMW. Also
use the Integrated Owner's Manual in the vehicle. It contains important
notes on vehicle operation that will help you make full use of the technical
features available in your BMW. The manual also contains information de-
signed to enhance operating reliability and traffic safety, and to contribute
to maintaining the value of your BMW.
At the time of production at the plant, the printed Owner's Manual is the
most current resource. After a vehicle software update – such as a Re-
mote Software Upgrade – the Integrated Owner's Manual for the vehicle
will contain the latest information.
You can find supplementary information in the additional brochures in the
onboard literature.
We wish you a safe and enjoyable ride.

Navigation system
Vehicle features and options
This chapter describes model-specific equip-
ment, systems, and functions that are currently
available, or may become available in the fu-
ture, even if they are not present in the vehicle.
Additional information:
For detailed information about the described
vehicle equipment, see Owner's Manual for the
vehicle.
Overview
General information
The navigation system can determine the pre-
cise position of the vehicle with the aid of sat-
ellites, and guide you to every destination en-
tered.
Certain functions of the navigation system are
limited until they have been selected for data
transfer. These services can be individually
configured.
Additional information:
Services, refer to page 25.
Safety information
Warning
Operating the integrated information systems
and communication devices while driving can
distract from surrounding traffic. It is possi-
ble to lose control of the vehicle. There is
a risk of accident. Only use the systems or
devices when the traffic situation allows. As
warranted, stop and use the systems and de-
vices while the vehicle is stationary.
Warning
There can be deviations between the current
traffic situation and details of the navigation
instructions, for instance changed road layout
or road construction. There is a risk of acci-
dent. The respectively valid traffic rules take
precedence.

one command or successively.
▷For destinations in the same town/city, in-
dicating the street is sufficient. The system
will apply the current town/city automati-
cally.
▷You can search for points of interest using
natural language, for instance by asking for
restaurants nearby.

pend on the navigation data and the coun-
try and language settings.

By entering a sequence of letters or numbers,
you can search for destinations online or in the
stored navigation data in the vehicle.
General information
The following information can be used for the
destination input:
▷Points of interest.

It is possible to search simultaneously by
town/city and street. To do this, enter a text
string for the town/city, then a blank space and
a text string for the street name.
The search displays suggestions for which a
search can be started without entering letters
or numbers. Depending on the equipment,
frequent search keywords are learned and in-
cluded on the list of suggestions.

General information
Depending on the national-market version, the
following information is displayed in the route
preview:
▷Guidance information, for instance, turn-off
instructions or driving lane information.
▷Notices, e.g., in case of dangerous curves.
▷Display with different information. Dis-
played are, for instance, the name of the
upcoming road, a tunnel or icons.
▷Traffic events, for instance, traffic jams, ac-
cidents or construction sites.
▷Additional information, for instance, tunnels
or rest areas.
▷Distance to the next maneuver.
In the case of multi-lane roads, lane informa-
tion may indicate the recommended lanes.
Depending on the equipment and national-
market version, the current vehicle position is
displayed in the driving lane information.
Display
The information in the route preview is dis-
played, e.g., with the following icons:

charging recommendations.
▷Parking suggestions.
▷Augmented View.

Plan possible stops along the route
Principle
For the active destination guidance, a points of
interest search can be used to plan possible
stops along the route, e.g. to refuel, charge or
to take a break.
General information
With a low remaining range, a notification
is automatically displayed with a refueling or
charging suggestion. The refueling or charging
recommendation shows a list of filling stations
or charging stations, which can be applied as
intermediate destinations.
Additionally, refueling or charging recommen-
dations are displayed in the route preview.
Electric vehicles:
Information with charging recommendations is
displayed immediately after you enter a desti-
nation, depending on vehicle equipment and
national-market version. Alternatively, route
guidance is started on a charging-optimized
route with automatically selected charging sta-
tions. Charging recommendations or charging-
optimized routes are calculated when the des-
tination entered cannot be reached with the
current vehicle battery charge.
With the charging-optimized route, an opti-
mum charge level is recommended for each
charging station. This is the level at which the
destination can be reached as quickly as pos-
sible. The corresponding expected charging
time is given. The charging destination is opti-
mized by the navigation system and changed
for each charging stop added automatically.
With a longer charging stop, the vehicle is
charged beyond the optimized charging target.
Additional information:

Augmented View
Principle
Depending on the equipment, Augmented
View provides support for upcoming maneu-
vers and parking at the destination.
General information
If there is an upcoming maneuver during route
guidance, Augmented View is automatically
displayed on the control display or central dis-
play range of the instrument cluster, depend-
ing on vehicle equipment.
Augmented View consists of a camera image
of the actual vehicle's surroundings, displaying
relevant information for the maneuver such as
turn information.
Shortly before the destination is reached, infor-
mation will be displayed that can be helpful for
parking, e.g., parking suggestions.
Depending on vehicle equipment, Augmented
View on the instrument cluster enables the vis-
ualization of driver assistance systems on the
actual vehicle's surroundings.
Additional information:
Assisted View, see Owner’s Manual for the ve-
hicle.
Safety information
Warning
The system cannot serve as a substitute for
the driver’s personal judgment in assessing
the traffic situation. Based on the limits of
the system, it cannot independently react
to all traffic situations. There is a risk of
accident. Adjust driving style to traffic condi-
tions. Watch the surrounding traffic situation
closely, be ready to take over steering and
braking at any time, and actively intervene
where appropriate.
Sensors
Depending on the equipment version, the sys-
tem is controlled by the following sensors:
▷Camera behind the windshield.
▷Front radar sensor.
▷Radar sensors, side, front.
▷Radar sensors, side, rear.
Additional information:

ver, the type of maneuver is

Parking possibilities.
If available, parking possibili-
ties are displayed before the
destination is reached.
Depending on the equipment,
colored lines indicate areas
with parking possibilities along
the street.
Icon Function

When parking possibilities are
displayed, the walking distance
is also displayed shortly before
reaching the destination.
Destination flag.
When the destination is
reached, a destination flag and
a finish line and additional in-
formation will be displayed.
Short distance.
If the distance to the preced-
ing vehicle is too short, this
icon is displayed on the instru-
ment cluster when speed con-
trol systems are deactivated,
depending on vehicle equip-
ment.
Grey lines indicate the recom-
mended minimum distance to
the preceding vehicle.
If a point of interest was entered as a destina-
tion, details about the point of interest will be
displayed, e.g., ratings.
Parking suggestions
Principle
The parking suggestions make the search for
available parking spaces in cities easier.
When parking information is available for the
surrounding area of the destination, a mes-
sage with parking suggestions is displayed just
before the destination is reached.
Depending on the equipment, colored lines in-
dicate areas with parking possibilities along
the street. The more visible the lines, the
greater the probability of finding a parking
space.
