4. The fi rst fi re bakes the painted surface, hich results in a release of
fumes.
2. Installation:
Air the room!
Do not touch the paint until the hearth has cooled, because it softens
initially before hardening permanently.
2. Unscrew the two screws on the front and remove.
3. Cut the Co son co ar around the counterweight and the support.
4. Ensure that the door is operating correct y ( atera opening, ifting/
owering)
5. Open hot air vents and if required the hot air intakes for natura
convection (see pp 19 & 20)
6. After connecting to the chimney, we recommend that you fi re
up the Phenix (door opened and door c osed) before c osing the
decorative chimney.
7. The fi nishing covers may be removed to faci itate the insta ation of
the decorative chimney. A ways remove or rep ace the covers with door in the «down» position.
It is imperative that the masks side can al ays be dismantled.
1. The hearth must be absolutely level (references: from side and
front edge of the fi re box).

1.3. Opening and closing the hearth
1.4. Fire fl ue
The quality of the ood is of vital importance to the opti-
mum operation of the hearth (heat output and power, c ean i-
ness of the g ass).
High qua ity wood is:
- dry, having been dried for at east two years under venti ated
she ter.
- preferab y from deciduous trees rather than resinous trees
which tend to burn fast whi e producing a ot of soot.
In order of preference: hornbeam, oak, beech.
- ogs made from compressed wood chips and briquettes may
a so be used.
1.4.1. Air regulator
An excessive quantity of ood leads to:
- lo er output and an increase in ood consumption.
- a signifi cant loss of heat via the chimney.
- premature ear to the hearth.

1.4.4. Maximum rate
The maximum load permissible at maximum rate ( ith the air regulator open) is 5 kg/hour
for the PHENIX 1000, 4 kg/hour for the PHENIX 850 and 3 kg/hour for the PHENIX 650.
Ensure that the door is properly lo ered so that it closes completely
and thus engages the automatic key.
1.4.2. Lighting
* Set the air regu ator in the maximum position (to the right)
* Put a fi re ighter or crump ed paper towards the front.
Finish with kind ing in the midd e.
P ace 2-4 sp it ogs (according to size) at the back.
* Light and ower the door to 4-5 cm from the bottom.
To avoid smoke condensation on the glass and help to get
the fi re going, the door should be left slightly open during
lighting (+/- 4-5 cm less than complete closure).
*Close completely once the fl ames are ell established and the glass has become hot.
1.4.3. Reduced rate
The maximum load permissible at reduced rate ( ith the air
regulator closed) is 10 kg/hour for the PHENIX 1000, 7 kg/hour
for the PHENIX 850 and 7 kg/hour for the PHENIX 650. Choose
ogs with a very thick cross section.
This oad may on y be used at reduced rate (air regu ator c osed) to
obtain a s ow-burning fi re.
Para e stacking of the ogs encourages s ow burning.
Add more ogs when on y embers remain, just after the disappearance
of the ast fl ames.
NOTE: Constant use at the reduced rate may encourage an accumulation of soot in the chi-
mney due to condensation. This carries the risk of a chimney fi re and causes the glass to
become soiled.
1.4.5. Open fi re
To bui d up a stock of embers suffi cient for combustion in open fi re
mode, we recommend that you start with the door c osed so that the
hearth is hot and the wood is burning we .
For we -estab ished fl ames, pi e 2-3 ogs criss-crossed.
Each time more wood is added, there may be signifi cant amounts of
smoke if the wood is not suffi cient y dry. If this occurs, we recommend
that you keep the door c osed momentari y.
NOTE: Avoid using in open fi re mode under adverse eather conditions (lo pressure and
high humidity) - there is a danger that smoke may blo back into the room!
DO NOT use this door position (+/- 4-5 cm before complete closure) all the time
as this could damage the door.
It is essential to use the fan here installed. To avoid co d draughts, start the fan
10 to 15 minutes after ighting.

CAUTION
When the hearth is in operation, some accessible parts of the appliance reach very high

-- Remove excess cinders, and if possib e vacuum the ashes from the air distributor and air
regu ator.

and spread ith a cloth or absorbent paper.
- Do not use abrasive cleaning materials or
acid products on the screen (the black area of
glass).
- Do not use ater and/or cleaning products
on the painted surfaces.

2.2. Annual maintenance
VERMICULITE PLATES
Vermicu ite is a natural mineral substance (without asbestos) which has been processed
and which is comp ete y recyc ab e. These insu ating p ates are resistant to very high
temperatures.
The vermiculite plates must not be exposed to ater hence the importance of having
a cover on the chimney.
A cracked p ate wi sti provide protection. However, if a sma piece is missing the p ate
wi have to be rep aced to ensure the effective protection of the combustion chamber.
Vermicu ite p ates are rep aceab e parts that can easi y be changed individua y. We recom
mend that any damaged p ates be changed. The base p ates can be turned over.
HIMNEY SWEEPING
Have the chimney s ept at least once a year, not just to
comply ith legal requirements but also for reasons
of safety.
Before sweeping:
1. Remove the pin from the ever operating the
automatic key.
2. Remove the va ve.
3. C ose the air regu ator.
4. C ose the hearth door.
After the dust has sett ed:
5. Gent y open the door atera y (as for c eaning
the g ass).
6. Co ect the dust in the hearth and
the va ve fi xing frame.
PAINTWORK ON METAL AREAS
Do not use ater and/or cleaning products on the painted parts.
Soi ed areas can be restored using specia high temperature B&G paint in aeroso form,
avai ab e from your dea er.
LUBRICATION
If the hearth is used frequent y, it is advisab e to ubricate the guiding shaft, using on y high
temperature si icone ubricant (Bodart & Gonay high temperature lubricant available in
small packages from your dealer).
DO NOT USE OTHER LUBRICANTS - at high temperature they may dry out and b ock the
carriage
C ean the surfaces before app ying the ubricant.

Remove and disconnect the fan, c ean the turbine b ades with a brush (do not use com

use, independent y, at any time and without prior notice.
Failure to follo the constraints and recommendations in these instructions shall render the
guarantee void.
Work under guarantee sha be carried out exc usive y by the distributor’s agent on production of the
purchase invoice.
Rep acement parts wi on y be provided in exchange for the fau ty ones.
EXCLUSIONS
Accidents, prob ems and ma functions arising from:
- mismatch between the nomina power of the app iance and the heat requirements of the room;
- fau ty insta ation or connections;
- insuffi cient or excessive draught;
- improper use;
- incompatib e, destructive or damp fue s (treated wood etc.)
- consumption exceeding the use imits;
- inadequate maintenance;
- the use of e ectrica and e ectronic components not approved by Bodart & Gonay;
- any interna modifi cation or a teration to the hearth;
- transport and insta ation.

Recommendations
The chimney fl ue must be bui t in comp iance with bui ding regu-
ations of which the fo owing features are the most important:
- Minimum height (distance between connection and top
of stack) wi be 5 m for a hearth which can operate with
the door open.
- Cross section
Phénix 1000: 490 cm² (Ø 25 cm) to 400* cm²
Phénix 850: 490 cm² (Ø 25 cm) to 315* cm² (Ø 20 cm)
Phénix 650: 314 cm² (Ø 20 cm) to 254* cm² (Ø 18 cm)

- The fl ue must have therma insu ation.
- The vent of the chimney (stack) and its positioning are very
important. It is essentia that the stack is provided with a cover
to prevent raining fa ing into the hearth. Ask the advice of a
chimney specia ist (any device which narrows the cross-section
of the vent is to be avoided).
- The presence of obstac es c ose the chimney vent must be
taken into account.
- A smoke fl ue may not consist of more than two
changes in direction. The ang e of these e bows to
the vertica may not genera y exceed 20°, or 45° for
a fl ue in smooth meta .
- The fl ue must permit the removab e of soot (it
must be possib e to sweep the chimney).
- On y connect a sing e app iance to each fl ue.
IN THE CASE OF AN EXISTING FLUE:
It is essentia to check that the fl ue is watertight, empty and stab e, but
a so whether it is compatible ith the hearth. If necessary, ine the
fl ue or modify the stack.

IDEAL DRAUGHT
Approx 20 Pa in the chimney with door c osed; in practice it
is a most impossib e to take this measurement. It is however
possib e to take another measurement during operating tests,
at the eve of the notch for c osing the air regu ator (with
the vacuum gauge probe inserted into the notch); the draught
measured at this point is ower than in the chimney because
of the automatic key; it shou d fa between 15 and 20 Pa with
a moderate fi re.

DRAUGHT REGULATOR
When one or more parameters contro ing the fumes (e.g. extreme
height.) are ike y to resu t in a very strong draught (more than 40
Pa), we recommended fi tting an automatic draught regulator.

outside the hood or readi y visib e and accessib e inside it. It must
be easy to check.
4. External air supply
When a hearth burns ood it consumes air,
which means that a certain amount f air eaves
by the chimney. This must e compensated by the
usua intakes
A and B, and if inadequate a new fresh air intake
C must be provided. An extractor fan in the same
space wi create an additiona air out et D’, which
must a so be compensated for.
Suggested va ue of C for the chimney diameter
and the air-tightness of the bui ding:
- Ø25 cm chimney ® in et Ø13 cm (133 cm²)
- Ø20 cm chimney ® in et Ø10 cm (79 cm²)
- Ø18 cm chimney ® in et Ø 9 cm (64 cm²)

It is essential to open 2-4 air vents depending on the model and installation instructions.
These vents must be connected to a duct at least 50 cm high.
Thermally insulated ducts are recommended for optimum operation of the app iance (these
create a draught for convection air). Using 4 hot air vents and 4 hot air intakes signifi cantly
improves the fl o of hot air for natural convection.
When insta ing these ducts, make the runs as short as possib e with the fewest possib e turns,
take turns as wide as possib e and avoid using vent gri es that b ock too great a proportion of the
fl ow, since speed osses wi reduce the effi ciency of the hot air vents.
When insta ing a hearth with venti ation
of 450 m³/h, the hot air ducts can be
used to carry hot air into other rooms. In
this case, it is vital to provide a return
duct of the same or larger cross sec-
tion as the hot air vents. This is very
important to avoid depressurising the
room, which wi cause prob ems with the
operation of the hearth.
Example of installation ith inlet and outlet of convection air ithout grille:
→ Separate any insu ating materia s present we
from the convection current, to avoid spreading
dust.
No infl ammable materials
( ood, allpaper, etc.) on the
ceiling and alls.
Casing
→ No infl ammab e materia s may come into con-
tact with the hot air vent housings.
- If the hot air is carried into another room, a return duct to the hearth of identica cross-section
must be fi tted in order to avoid a pressure imba ance between the rooms of the house.
- Do not forget that sme s wi be carried into other rooms via the hot air vents.
- It is highly inadvisable to take all the convection air from the outside (too much co d air
resu ts in ower performance). If the convection air is a so forced in by a fan, this wi resu t in a
signifi cant overpressurisation of the room which wi make it impossib e to contro the fi re.
- The convection air circuits must also be considered (see the convection diagrams belo ).

5.3. Forced convection (optional fan)
At least t o hot air vents must be opened.
The side air inlets in the base of the apparatus must remain closed.
For the fan air in et, a passage through the brickwork must be provided of at east 450 cm² section
without fi ter, or at east 700 cm² with a dust fi ter (Warning! Take account of the coeffi cient of
passage of gri es and fi ters).
Proper separation of the air in ets and out ets in the masonry is vita . Some insu ating materia s
deteriorate with age. As a resu t, dust from the insu ation materia may be picked up and be spread
into the ambient air of the bui ding.
6. Installation
P ease read the RECOMMENDATIONS section on page 4.
In addition, for optima performance:
- To avoid heat oss in the ducts, we advise insu ating them.
- The minimum cross-sections of the in ets and out ets for convection air must be respected.
- The chimney must be suitab e.
- INFLAMMABLE MATERIALS: these shou d not be used in the immediate vicinity of the hearth,
the hot air vents and the chimney fl ue. A safety distance of 80 cm is required at fl oor eve . It
shou d be noted that when operating with the door open, burning embers can be thrown severa
metres.
- INSULATING MATERIALS: use «HIGH TEMPERATURE» materia s such as certain types of rock
woo or ceramic fi bre (DO NOT USE GLASS WOOL).
5.2. Natural convection
It is vital to open four hot air vents for the Phénix 1000
and at least t o for the Phénix 850 and 650. These
vents must be connected to a conduit at least 50 cm
high. The top of the hearth must not be insulated.
If the hearth is positioned at least 4 cm from the
ground, air intake is ensured by the venti ation ho e under-
neath the hearth. (A). However, opening the atera in ets
appreciab y improves heat recuperation.
If the hearth is place level ith the ground (less than 4
cm above), the 4 air intakes must be opened. For pre-
ference use the atera intakes (B).
A passage of ± 700 cm² (for 4 connected vents ithout fi ter), and ± 450 cm² (for 2 connected
vents without fi ter) shou d be a owed in the brickwork for the entry of convection air into the
hearth.
