Safety
Brave 4800-350-8739
Safety Alert Symbol
The safety alert symbol is used to identify safety information about hazards that can
result in personal injury or death.
A signal word (WARNING or CAUTION) is used with the alert symbol to indicate the
likelihood and the potential severity of injury. In addition, a hazard symbol may be used
to represent the type of hazard.
WARNING indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, could result in death or
serious injury.
CAUTION indicates a hazard which, if not avoided, might result in minor or
moderate injury.
IMPORTANT NOTICE indicates a situation that could result in damage to the log
splitter, cylinder, or engine.
The following is a list of safety rules you must follow in order to use your log
splitter safely.
General
To avoid personal injury or death, carefully read and understand all instructions
pertaining to the Brave’ log splitter.
Do not attempt to assemble, operate, or maintain the log splitter unless you
read and understand the instructions, precautions, and warnings in this manual.
If any doubt or question arises about the correct or safe method of performing
any steps found in this or other Brave’ manuals, contact your Brave’ dealer or
call the Sales and Service representatives at our main headquarters. Proper
care is your responsibility.
Accidents can often be avoided by being alert and recognizing potentially
hazardous situations. Any individuals operating, maintaining, or repairing
products manufactured by Brave should have the necessary training, skills, and
tools required to perform these functions properly and safely. The safety
information in this manual serves as a basic guide in an attempt to prevent
injury or death.
Brave cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a
potential hazard. The warnings in this manual and on the product itself are,
therefore, not all inclusive. If tools, procedures, work methods, or operating
techniques that are not specifically mentioned by Brave are used, you must
satisfy yourself that they are safe for you and for others. Make sure the log
splitter will not be damaged or made unsafe by any operation,
lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedures that you choose.

800-350-8739 5Brave
Safety
DO NOT proceed if any doubt arises about the correct o
r
safe method of performing
anything found in this or other Brave manuals. Seek out expert assistance from
a qualified person before continuing.
CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65: Engine exhaust from this product contains
chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or
other reproductive harm.
SPARK ARRESTORS: Certain states and federal jurisdictions have specific
laws prohibiting the use of an internal combustion engine without an approved
spark arrestor. It is the users responsibility to make sure the engine complies
with laws that apply in the state the log splitter is used. Check local laws and

ALWAYS allow for added length of the log splitter when turning, parking,
crossing intersections, and in all driving situations.

Safety
Brave 6800-350-8739
It is NOT recommended that you back up with the log splitter connected to the
tow vehicle. The log splitter could easily jackknife, resulting in damage to the
log splitter and/or tow vehicle.
ALWAYS disconnect your log splitter from the tow vehicle before operating the
log splitter.
NEVER exceed 35 m.p.h. (56 kph) when towing your log splitter. Obey all state
and local regulations when towing on state and local roads and highways.
Adjust your speed for terrain and conditions, as needed. Be extra cautious
when towing over rough terrain, especially over a railroad crossing.
NEVER allow anyone to sit or ride on your log splitter. NEVER carry any cargo
or wood on your log splitter.
Worksite Safety
NEVER operate your log splitter on slippery, wet, muddy, or icy surfaces. The
location you choose should be solid, flat, dry, and free from any tall grass,
brush, or other interferences.
NEVER operate the engine in an enclosed area. Exhaust fumes contain
carbon monoxide that can be deadly when inhaled. Make sure the area is well
ventilated.
✘
NEVER attempt to move your log splitter while the engine is running.
✘
NEVER leave the log splitter running unattended. Shut off engine if you are
going to be away from the log splitter even for a short period of time.
Always block the wheels to prevent movement of the log splitter, while in
operation .
To avoid tripping, do not leave tools, logs, or other components laying around
the work area.
NEVER use your log splitter at night.
Operating Safety
ONLY ALLOW ONE (1) PERSON TO LOAD AND OPERATE THE
LOG SPLITTER.
Do not allow any person to operate the log splitter until after they have read and
understand the safe operating instructions contained in this manual.
Only allow adults to operate your log splitter. No one under the age of 18 should
be allowed to operate the log splitter.

800-350-8739 7Brave
Safety
Always keep bys
t
anders, including children and pe
t
s, at least twenty-five (25)
feet away from the work area. Only the operator should stand near the
equipment and only within the safe operating area prescribed in this manual
(refer to the photos on safe and unsafe operating zones in the “Operation”
section.)
When the ram of the log splitter is in the return mode, keep your hands off the
machine — the log splitter is designed to automatically stop when the cylinder
is fully retracted.
ALWAYS disconnect the spark plug wire when the log splitter is not in operation.
Do not, under any circumstances, alter your log splitter. This equipment was
designed and engineered to be used in accordance with the operating

Safety
Brave 8800-350-8739
Log Splitting Safety
Always keep your fingers away from cracks that open in the log during the
splitting operation.
✔ ALWAYS keep full attention on the splitting zone to prevent injury. Hazards
can arise from wood defects (knots, irregular shapes, etc).
ALWAYS make sure that both ends of the log you are splitting are cut as square
as possible. This will prevent the log from sliding out of position while under
pressure. Logs should be 18 inches or shorter in length.
Never pile logs to be split in a manner that will cause you to reach across the
log splitter.
Refueling
DO NOT fill the gas tank while the engine is hot or running. Allow time for the
engine to cool down before refueling.
ONLY refuel the log splitter outdoors in a clear area. Avoid breathing gas fumes
or spilling gasoline on the engine. ALWAYS use an approved fuel container to
carry gasoline.
ALWAYS replace the log splitter gas cap and the fuel container cap securely.
NEVER smoke or have an open flame while refueling the log splitter.
Gasoline, oil, and even gas fumes can explode. Be careful not to spill
any fuel on the engine.
If gasoline is spilled, move the machine away from the area of the spill and
avoid creating any source of ignition. Clean up the spill and make sure any
gasoline-soaked rags are disposed of properly.
Always store gasoline in an approved, tightly-sealed container. Store the
container in a cool, dry place. Do not store the container in a house or near any
heating appliance.
Preventing Fires
Important Notice
The log splitter is equipped with an internal combustion engine and should not
be used on or near any unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-
covered land unless the engine’s exhaust system is equipped with a spark
arrester meeting local or state laws (if any). If a spark arrester is used, it
should be maintained in effective working order by the owner and/or operator.

800-350-8739 9Brave
Safety
Take a class B fire extinguisher with you when operating the log splitter in dry
areas as a precautionary measure against possible flying sparks.
NEVER operate the log splitter near a flame or spark. NEVER smoke while
operating the log splitter. Oil and gasoline are flammable and can explode.
SPARK ARRESTORS: Certain states and federal jurisdictions have specific
laws prohibiting the use of an internal combustion engine without an approved
spark arrestor. It is the users responsibility to make sure the engine complies
with laws that apply in the state the log splitter is used. Check local laws and
refer to the engine manual for more information on equipping the engine with a
required spark arrestor.
Maintenance and Repair
For more information on maintaining the log splitter, refer to the Inspection and
Maintenance section in this manual.
Follow all safety rules. Most accidents involving the operation, maintenance,
or repair of products occur because the owner/operator failed to observe
basic safety rules or operating instructions.
ALWAYS inspect your log splitter before each use. Make sure all nuts, bolts,
screws, hydraulic fittings, hose clamps, etc. are securely tightened.
ALWAYS check the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank and engine reservoir before

engine and hydraulic pump damage.
NOTE: Place a clean container under oil level hole to catch any overflow of oil. Do not
allow excess oil to spill onto the ground.
1. Remove the fill cap and oil level screw
from the oil tank. Using a long-neck
funnel, SLOWLY pour, approximately
6 quarts (5.7 liters) of the selected oil into
oil fill opening (K) until it flows from oil
level hole (L). Do not mix fluids, use only
one type. Re-install the fill cap and oil
level screw.
Hot weather - SAE 30W or AW 68 tractor

Start-up Procedure
WARNING
To prevent a fire hazard or possible explosion which could result
in serious injury, do not smoke or have open flames when
refueling the engine. Do not spill fuel. If fuel should spill, quickly
wipe up the spill and move the log splitter away from the area before continuing.
Make sure gasoline-soaked rags are disposed of properly.
4. Fill the engine’s fuel tank with fresh, clean, lead-free automotive gasoline. Fill to
approximately 1-1/2” below top of neck to allow for expansion. The supplied engine is
a 4-cycle engine, so do not mix oil with the fuel.
5. Now start the engine according to the engine manufacturer’s instruction.
(Refer to the engine manual.) Allow the engine to warm up.
WARNING
Keep all body parts away from the slide area when cycling the cylinder.
6. Push the valve control handle, with one hand, to the forward (extend) position
(towards the front of the cylinder). When the push plate is fully extended, push the
valve control handle backwards to the retract position and retract the cylinder piston.
The cylinder valve will automatically stop the cylinder from retracting when it reaches
the end of its stroke. Fully cycle the cylinder 2 to 3 times, finishing with cylinder in the
retracted position.
NOTE: Extending and retracting the cylinder piston draws the hydraulic fluid through the
system and expels any trapped air in the system.
7. Turn off the engine.
8. Make sure the log splitter is flat and level. Remove the fill cap and oil level screw and
slowly add approximately 3 quarts (2.8 liters) of additional oil just until it runs from the
oil level hole. Allow enough time for excess oil to drain from oil level hole. Re-install
fill cap and oil level screw making sure O-rings are in place.
9. Check all fittings and hoses for leaks and tighten as needed. Your EZ Split 15 log
splitter is now ready to use.

Maximum Towing Speed Limit — 35 mph. (56 kph). Your log splitter is built on a
solid, unsuspended axle. To prevent damage or possible loss of vehicle control,
use extreme caution when towing and do not exceed a vehicle speed of 35 mph
(56 kph), especially when driving on a bumpy road.
NOTE: Always check the log splitter tire
pressure before towing. Refer to the tire
manufacturer’s specifications.
1. The hitch on your EZ Split 15 log splitter
must be used with a 2 inch diameter hitch
ball installed on the tow vehicle. Position
the log splitter tongue near the hitch ball
and pull coupler (4) latch assembly
UPWARD to the OPEN position.
2. Lift the tongue, remove lock pin (A), and
fold front leg (B) to the tow position.
Insert the lock pin.
3. Position the hitch on the tow ball of your
vehicle and push DOWN on coupler (4)
latch. Pull UP on the tongue arm to make
sure the hitch is secure. Insert a
customer supplied lock pin (not shown)
into the latch assembly. Attach towing
safety chains (7) to the tow vehicle.
Important Notice
Do not back up with the log splitter
attached. The short tongue length can
cause it to jackknife quickly, resulting in
damage to the log splitter and/or tow
vehicle.

Operation
WARNING
Do not attempt to operate the log splitter without
fully
understanding all instructions, safety precautions,
and
warnings. If any doubt or question arises about the correct or
safe method of performing anything found in this or other Brave
Products’ manuals, contact your Brave’ dealer or call the Sales and Service
representatives at our main headquarters. Proper care is your responsibility.
Before loading and operating the log splitter, put on the
proper protective gear, such as safety goggles, face
shield, hearing protection (ear muffs or ear plugs),
tight-fitting gloves (without drawstrings or loose cuffs),
and steel-toed shoes.
When operating the log splitter, make sure you are in the safe operating zone, as shown
in these pictures. You must stay in the safe operating zone at all times when the
pusher plate is in motion (whether extending or retracting). Never place any part of your
body into a position which would cause an unsafe operating condition.
1. Make sure you read all the
recommendations in the “Safety” section,
before using the log splitter.
2. Position your log splitter on solid, flat, dry
ground. Block the wheels to prevent
unwanted movement of the log splitter
during operation.
3. Start the engine using the instructions
from the engine manual. If the log splitter
has not been running (cold engine), warm
up the engine by running the engine for 3
to 4 minutes, before operating the
hydraulic system.
WARNING
Make sure you stay clear from the engine’s exhaust. Hot exhaust is
intense and can cause serious injury.
