About this Guide
Congratulations on your purchase of the Netaccess®
Instant RAS® IRAS-24A T1/ISDN Modem product. The
IRAS-24A provides up to 23 RAS ports per card using
Primary Rate Interface (PRI) ISDN service, or alternately, can
be configured for T1-RBS (Robbed Bit Signaling) service,
providing up to 24 channels at 56Kbps. The IRAS-24A uses
Netaccess Anycall™ Technology, supporting both digital and
analog modem calls.
Netaccess’ Anycall Technology gives your server the ability
to handle any kind of Remote Access phone call. The
supported call types are ISDN, T1-RBS, and analog modem.
Anycall handles both 64K and 56K digital ISDN, 56K RBS,
modem calls from 2400 bps to 33.6 kbps, V.90 calls, and
K56flex calls.
This Guide leads you through the process of installing,
configuring, and using your new Netaccess IRAS-24A card.

Product
Description This IRAS-24A T1/ISDN Modem card provides a high-
capacity Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), or a
Robbed Bit Signaling (RBS) solution for service providers and
corporate information centers using Microsoft Windows NT
4.0, and Windows NT 3.51 servers. With the Netaccess
IRAS-24A card and T1 service, remote users have error-free,
high-speed WAN access to corporate databases, applications,
and other LAN resources.
The IRAS-24A card is a long card PCI-bus adapter that you
can easily install in the server PC. The IRAS-24A design
incorporates an intelligent on-board microprocessor to
handle network traffic, ISDN protocols, and modem
protocols, off-loading processing tasks from the server’s main
CPU.
Configurations
Configuration options available for the IRAS-24A card
include:
❐IRAS-24A – provides Primary Rate Interface (PRI)
ISDN connectivity for up to twenty-three 64 kbps
channels, or up to twenty-four 56 kbps channels when
configured for RBS. Using Netaccess Anycall
Technology, the IRAS-24A handles ISDN, T1-RBS, and
Modem.
❐IRAS-24/16A – same as IRAS-24A, supports only 16
analog modems.
❐IRAS-24/8A – same as IRAS-24A, supports only 8
analog modems.
❐IRAS-24AC – same as IRAS-24A with the addition of
an internal CSU for a direct connection to a T1 line.

The IRAS-24A T1/ISDN Modem card is part of the Netaccess
Instant RAS® communications product line. This product
family provides dial-up remote LAN access. Other members

concurrent users at speeds up to 33.6 kbps channel.
Supports up to 8 cards per system. The MPM-4i, an
international version certified in many European and

❐IRAS-8/IRAS-8A provides ISDN BRI digital
connectivity for up to 8 concurrent users at speeds up
to 64 kbps per channel. The IRAS-8A uses Netaccess
Anycall Technology to handle ISDN, Modem, and
FAX.
❐IRAS-24/48 provides ISDN PRI digital connectivity
for up 23 or 46 concurrent users at speeds up to 64
kbps per channel (T1-ISDN based services only).
❐IRAS-30A – provides Primary Rate Interface (PRI)
ISDN connectivity for up to thirty 64 kbps channels.
Using Netaccess Anycall Technology, the IRAS-30A
handles ISDN, and Modem (E1-based services only).

CHAPTER 1
Getting Started
This chapter provides information to help you to prepare to
install and configure your Netaccess IRAS-24A T1/ISDN
Modem card and driver, including:

❐Installation and configuration overview
You should review this chapter before you begin the
installation process.
Preinstallation
Requirements To use the IRAS-24A card, you need the following
equipment, which is not provided by Brooktrout:
❐A server PC running under one of the following
operating systems: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, or
Windows NT 3.51.
❐One T1 line per Netaccess IRAS-24A card configured.
Each IRAS-24A card supports one T1 line.
NOTE: The T1 line(s) is provided by your local or long
distance service provider; see Appendix A for
ordering and Line Configuration information.

❐An external Channel Service Unit (CSU) device to
connect the T1 line to the IRAS-24A card, or the
optional internal CSU device installed on the card
itself; see Chapter 2 and Appendix A.
Hardware and
Software
Requirements
This section discusses additional hardware requirements
specific to your server and network operating system.
Hardware for Windows NT
To use the IRAS-24A card, your PC must meet the system
requirements for Windows NT Server, Version 4.0 or
Version 3.51.
NOTE: System BIOS settings for the slot(s) in which the
IRAS-24A is installed should be set to allow the adapter to
act as a Bus Master. IRAS products are Bus Mastering
devices.
Table 1-1 lists Microsoft’s guidelines for minimum system
configurations based on the number of Remote Access
Service (RAS) ports to be configured. Each IRAS-24A card
supports up to 23 PRI-ISDN RAS users or 24 T1-RBS users.
Consult the documentation that came with your PC for
additional configuration information.

Software Requirements
To use the IRAS-24A card, your server must be running with
the Windows NT Server version 4.0 or Windows NT Server
version 3.51.
NOTE: To use the IRAS-24A card with Windows NT 4.0, your
server must have Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 or higher
installed; for Windows NT 3.51, your server must have
Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 5 installed.
Service
Requirements PRI-ISDN Service Requirements
The IRAS-24A card requires a PRI ISDN line configured as
follows:
❐Primary Rate (23B + D) ISDN service
❐Extended Superframe (ESF) framing mode and B8ZS
line coding are recommended. Superframe (SF)
framing mode and AMI line coding can be used if you
are connected to an older switch type.
❐D-channel on channel 24 of the PRI-ISDN line
❐B-channels configured for circuit-switched data and
voice (CSD/V)
❐No packet handling functions other than standard
D-channel signaling

manager if you need help getting the appropriate PRI-ISDN
line.
The PRI-ISDN line supports the following switches:

NOTE: Installation of PRI-ISDN service can require a lead time of

T1-RBS Service Requirements
The IRAS-24A card requires a T1-RBS line configured as
follows:
❐T1 Robbed Bit Signaling (RBS) service (also known as
Channelized T1).
Contact your service provider or telecommunications
manager if you need help getting the appropriate T1-RBS
line.
The T1-RBS line supports the following trunk types:
❐Wink Start
❐Delay Dial

❐4ESS Loop Start No Wink

Installation and
Configuration
Overview
IRAS-24A installation and configuration activities fall into
three general categories:
❐Service ordering – If the T1 line(s) is not already
installed at your site, it needs to be ordered from your
service provider (see Appendix A).
❐Hardware installation – The IRAS-24A must be
installed in your PC prior to driver software
installation and configuration. Chapter 2 contains
step-by-step hardware installation instructions. You
should also have the manual that accompanied the PC
available for reference.
❐Driver software installation and configuration – Once
the IRAS-24A card is installed, the driver software
must be installed onto the system and the
communication ports configured for operation with
Windows NT 4.0 (Chapter 3) or Windows NT 3.51
(Chapter 4).
