SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS: This manual contains important
instructions that should be followed during installation and
maintenance of the EBM.
• WARNING! The mounting shelves are not intended to support
more than one EBM. Do not stack multiple battery packs on a
single set of mounting shelves. Failure to follow this warning may
lead to product damage and the risk of physical injury.
• This unit is intended for installation in a controlled environment
(a temperature-controlled and indoor area free of conductive
contaminants). Please avoid installing the UPS and EBM in
locations where there is standing or running water, dust, direct
sunlight or excessive humidity.
• Use caution when lifting battery packs. Because of the
considerable weight of all battery packs, at least two people
should assist in lifting and installing them.
• Be sure that the battery packs and UPS system use the same DC
voltage before connecting them.
• Use of this EBM in life-support equipment or situations is not
recommended. bXterra does not sell equipment meant for life-
support or medical applications.
• When connecting multiple EBMs to a single bXterra UPS, the
battery packs should be approximately the same age.
• The suggested mounting procedures in this manual are for
common rack types and may not be appropriate for all rack
congurations. The user must determine the appropriate
mounting hardware and procedures before mounting the EBM.
• Do not unplug EBMs from the UPS while the UPS is on battery
power, due to the possibility of dangerous arcing and shock.
• It is not unusual for sparks to occur when connecting external
batteries.
• As dened in the Protection of Information Technology Equipment
ANSI/NFPA 75, this EBM is not for use in a computer room. (US

personnel knowledgeable about batteries and the required
precautions. When replacing batteries, replace with the same type
and number of batteries or battery packs.
CAUTION: The battery pack can energize hazardous live parts inside
the UPS even when the AC input power to the UPS is disconnected.

explode.
CAUTION: Do not open or mutilate batteries. Released electrolytes
are harmful to the skin and eyes. It may be toxic.

The following precautions should be observed when working on
batteries:

b) Use tools with insulated handles
c) Wear rubber gloves and boots
d) Do not lay tools or metal parts on top of batteries

to reduce likelihood of shock. Remove the connection from
ground if any part of the battery is determined to be grounded.
CAUTION: RISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS REPLACED BY AN
INCORRECT TYPE. Visit www.bxterra.com for information on the
specic replacement battery type for your UPS or EBM.

2. Open the front-left cover on the UPS and the Extended Battery
Module (EBM) and disconnect the internal batteries
3. Remove the EBM-terminal covers from the UPS and the EBM and
connect one end of the external-battery cable to the UPS and one
end to the battery module as shown in the gure below
• If connecting more than one external battery, connect one end of
the external battery cable to the second connector on the battery
pack, then connect the other end to the next battery pack as
shown in the gure below.
4. Once the UPS and EBM(s) are connected, secure the connection
with the screws, reconnect the internal batteries, and replace the
front-left covers on the units
Connect one end of the external battery cable to the UPS unit and
the other end to the battery pack. See the picture below for detailed
instructions.
CAUTION: Connection to an external battery should be installed by
service personnel only.
NOTE: After install and initial start-up, set the number of installed
EBM in the UPS Settings. Instructions for this process will be in the
manual for your UPS system.
NOTE: When two or more EBMs are used with 1000/2200/3000
models, the UPS load rating is decreased by 20%.
To store the EBM for a long period of time, cover it and make sure the
batteries are fully charged. Keeping the battery packs in a depleted
condition will leave them with a permanent loss of capacity. The
battery packs should be charged every three months by connecting it
to AC input for at least 12 hours. The battery packs should always be
kept dry and away from locations with high heat and/or humidity.
Do not dispose of batteries in a re.
Please recycle your batteries. Refer to local regulations for disposal
requirements or if you are in the USA, please call 1-877-723-1297 or
visit www.call2recycle.org for more information about recycling your
batteries.
