Few automobiles are fortunate enough to have the rich heritage
that
is Cadiilac. ThenameCadilllac isappropriatelythat of
Antoine deLa Mothe Cadillae, the French military commander
who founded the city of Detroit in 1708. What better name for
the oldest automobile manufacturer in Detroit.
Henry M. Leland,known as the master of precision,
initiated his precision manufacturing techniques at the
founding of Cadillac
in 1902. His exacting standards
prompted
the mottoby which Cadillac has been guided
over the years
- “Craftsmanship A Creed - Accuracy
A Law.”
The introduction of the first four cylinderengine in 1905
led the industryand enabled Cadillacsto travel at speeds
up to
50 mph.
For attention to qualityand innovation, the Royal
AutomobileClub of England awarded theprestigious
Dewar Trophy to Cadillac twice . . . first in 1908 for
achievingperfect interchangeability of parts and again
for introducingthe electric self starter,electric lighting
and ignition system on 191 2 models. Cadillac is the
only American manufacturerto win this honor and
the only manufacturerin the world to win
it twice. As
commonplaceas standardizedparts are today, in 1908
parts were still individuallyhand fitted both in
productionand service.

Standardizationopened the eyes of the industrialworld
and was thecornerstone
of modem assembly line
production.From this achievementevolved the
referenceto Cadillacas “Standard
of the World.”
In 1909 Cadillac was purchased
by the then new
GeneralMotors Corporation.
Convenience, cleanliness and all- weather comfort were
greatly enhanced in 1910 when Cadillac becamethe first
manufacturer to offer closed bodies as standard equipment.
“The Penalty
of Leadership” first appeared in the
January
2, 1915 issue of The Satusday Evening Post as an
expression of the Cadillac commitment to leadership,
quality and innovation. It is widely regarded as one of the

finest documents ever written. It was published following
the introduction of the fistproduction V8 engine,
which was standard in all Cadillacs beginning with the
1915 model.
Many Cadillac“fists” have followed over the years,
includingthe synchro-mechclashless transmission,
a
nationwidecomprehensiveservice policy, security plate
a stylist (1927LaSalle/Harley Earl). The ’30s witnessed
production
of the powerful, smooth and quiet V12 and
VI6 engines. The crisp, contemporarylines of the 1938
60 Specialseries ushered in a new era in styling.

DuringWorld War I%, shortly after Pearl Harbor,
Cadillacdiscontinued car production for the first time
since 1902 in order to constructlight tanks, combat
vehicles and internal
parts for Allison V1710 engines.
Two Cadillac V8 engines and Hydra-Matic
transmissionswere
used in each MSAI and M24 tanks.

Thereare,tobe sure, many waystodescribe the
superlativemotor car pictured.“Beauty,”
“majesty,”“brilliance”
- all apply, in their
fullest meaning, to this new Cadillac. And yet,
from this wonderfulvocabulary,we have
selected “elegance”
as the word that most fully
characterizes
the Cadillac of 1960. The car’s
beautiful, clean-linedstylingiscertainlyelegant
beyondcompare.
Its new interior luxury
provides a feeling of elegance that can be sensed
nowhere else in the world
of motor cars. And
even its new performance
--‘smooth, quiet and
effortless - might be summarizedas“elegance
in motion.” Once you have seen and driven it for
yourself, we think you will agree that the word is
“elegance” - and that the car is Cadillac!

For the 1948model, Cadillac introduced the legendary
tail fin which once more set the trend in automotive
stylingfor nearly twodecades.
This was closely
followed withthe two door hardtop CoupeDeVille and
the industry’sfirstmodern
overhead valve, high
compression V8 engine on the I949 model.
Engineeringinnovations,conveniences
and styling
dominated the ’50s and ’60s. Cruise control, automatic
climatecontrol, tilt and telescopingsteeringwheels,
twilightsentinel
and four doorhard tops alldebuted in
theseyears. In 1957 the EldoradoBroughamfeatured
advances such as air suspension, memory seat,
automaticelectric
door locks, transistor radio, a brushed
stainless
steel roof and low profile tires.
The Eladlorado, introduced in 31953, was redesigned for
1967 as the first front wheel drive personal luxury car.
The 472 cu. in. V8 engine used in all1 Cadillacsin 1948
and
1969 was enlarged to 500 cu. in. for all 1970
through 1974 Eldorados. The Track Master
computerized
slud control braking system option
debuted on 1970 EBdorados.
A driver andpassenger Air Cushion Restraint
system (air
bag) was available on all 1974, 1975 and
1.974 Cadillacs.
Analog ElectronicFuel Injection was available, on
1975 Cadillacsand standard on the new international
size 1976Seville.
In 1978, the Trip Computer option
incorporatedthe first ~n-bo~d rni.croprocessor.

Theelectronics and computerization which-were
pioneered by Cadillac in the ’70s came of age inthe
’80s with Digital F~el Injection and On-Board
Diagnostics in
1980, four wheel Anti-lock Brakeson
1986 models and TractionControlin the fall of 1989.
The 1992 Seville STS was thefistcar ever to win all
three major automotive
awards: Car of the Year, Motor
Trend;Ten Best List, Car & Driver; Car of the Year,
Automobile Magazine.
The
year 1993 saw the introduction of the Northstar
system.The state
of the art system includes the 32 valve,
dual overhead camshaft, Northstar4.6 liter
V8 engine,
4T80-E electronically controlled automatic transaxle,
road sensing suspension, speed sen3itive steering,
anti-lockbrakesandtractioncontrol.
