1Introduction
MailFountainisane-mailsandemailingserver.
Byitsfeatureofe‐mailsserver,MailFountainmanagesthesendingandreceivinge‐mailsforaspecifiednumberof
people(oraccounts).Italsoassociatedwithanaccountnumbere‐mailaddresses(aliases)orredirectsallreceivede‐
mailtoaparticularaddresstomultipleuseraccounts.Thiscorrespondstoatypicaluseofe‐mailandperfectlysuited
tocommunicatingmoreorlessregularlybetweenseveralpeoples.
Itsfunctionofemailingserverisspeciallydesignedtoefficientlysende‐mailstoalargenumberofrecipients(from
tenstohundredsofthousandsorevenmillions).MailFountainwillautomaticallytakecareoferrorsandcan
generatesendingreports.
Throughoutthismanualwewilltakeasanexampleafictitiouscompanywhichiscalled"MyCompany"andthatits
domainis"my-company.biz”.

Domain name
Thedomainname(orshortenedthedomain),isthepartlocatedtotherightof@signine‐mails.Forexamplewhen
youwriteto[email protected],thedomainnameiscalexium.com.Thisnameisuniqueworldwideandisowned
byacompanyoranindividualinexchangeforanannualpaymenttoacompanyregistry"registrar".
User account
Theuseraccount(sometimescalledadomain user),isthepartlocatedtotheleftofthe@signine‐mails.For
examplewhenyouwriteto[email protected],theuseraccountisinfo.Thisisthedomainadministratorwhoadds
anddeletesuseraccounts.
The default accounts

Administrator
TheadministratoristhepersonwhoisresponsibleforsettingandmaintenanceofMailFountain.Insmaller
companiestheadministratormaybetheofficer,thesecretary,etc....ormaybeyouwhoarereadingthismanual.
Alias
Analiasisane‐mailservingasanalternativetothemainaddressofauseraccount.Theaccountwherethealiasis
attachedcanthenbeusedtosendand/orreceivee‐mails.Thisgivesanotherpublicidentity.
A redirection
Aredirectioncanredirecttomultipleaccountsane‐mailsenttoaparticularaddress.Forexample,theaddress
support@my‐company.bizcanberedirectedtotheentireteamoftechniciansprovidingtechnicalsupport.
Spams
Spamreferstounsolicitede‐mailbytherecipient,bulksentforadvertisingordishonest.
However,sendingadvertisingisnotnecessarilyclassifiableasaspam,inparticular:
‐whentherecipientispartofaddressdatabaselegallyincorporatedandobtained
‐iftherecipientisaprofessional,thatthepurposeofadvertisingshouldberelatedtoitsactivityinthe
enterprise
‐Andin all cases,therecipientmusthaveaneffectiveopportunitytostopreceivingnewbusiness
prospecting.
4Different users
InMailFountain,thereare3differentlevelsofuse.Eachlevelhasitsownrights,andthereforeitssetofavailable
features.
4.1 The standard user
ThislevelcorrespondstoapersonwithjustoneemailaccountdefinedinMailFountain.Thisusertypeisnecessarily
linkedtooneandonlyonedomainname.Theusercansendandreceivee‐mailsfromitsownaddress(consistingof
theirusername,the@signandthedomainname).
Ausercanalsoadd/removerecipientsofemailingaccessibletohim,andpossiblysendanemailingcampaign.
4.2 The domain manager
Thislevelallowsthemanagementofoneormoredomains.Ineachdomain,themanagermaydefinethelistofusers
andtheirassociatedaliasesoraddredirections.
Itcanalsocreateemailinganddefineuserrightsforeachuseraccount.

4.3 The administrator
TheadministratorisuniqueandhasallrightstoMailFountain(exceptthatofviewingmailofhisusers).Itthus
encompassesallrightsofandomainmanager,butwithascopeonalldomainsofMailFountain.Itmayalsoaddand
/ordeletedomains,andfinallysetuptheMailFountain.
5The first start
TouseMailFountain,youwillhavetosetup.MailFountainreportsthatitisnotyetoperationalbytheblinkinggreen
lightinfrontofthebox:3timesevery5seconds.ThismeansthatMailFountainisinspecialmodetofacilitateits
configuration.Typicallyjustconnectacomputertooneofthe2LANports(seepictureforlocation)andopena
browsertodisplaythe1stpageofthewizard.
Inthismode,MailFountainworkasarouter,nameserverandDHCPserver.Itwillautomaticallyassignan
IPaddresstotheconnectedcomputerandwillredirectanyrequestofyourInternetbrowsertoitsown
configurationinterface.
Ifthesetuppagedoesnotappearautomaticallywhenthebrowserstart,youcanaccessitmanuallyby
enteringthefollowingaddress:http://mailfountain.local
Ifyoustillcannotaccessit,thenmakesureyouareconnectedtooneoftheLANportsofthe
MailFountain,andyourcomputerisconfiguredtoautomaticallyobtainanIPaddress(DHCPclient).

ThefirststepistoindicatetoMailFountainitsmethodtoaccesstonetwork.Inthiswizard,thechoiceswere
deliberatelysimplifiedandarelimitedto2choices:
•Automaticconfiguration
Thismodeismostcommonlyused.TheMailFountainattemptstodetectautomaticallythenetworkenvironment
(researchbyDHCP).IfyournetworkisalreadymanagedbyarouterorDSLbox,probablyMailFountainwillsucceed.
TheDSLorcablemodemsofsomeoperatorsalsoworkasit.
•Connectingwiththeidentifiers
ThismodeisusefulifyourMailFountainisconnecteddirectlytoaDSL/cableandyourconnectionrequiresthe
identifiers(loginandpassword).ThiscanhappenwithsomeDSLbox,whenconfiguredfor"modemmodeonly".
Youcanalsoskipthisstepandmanuallyconfigurenetworksettingslater,aftercompletingthesetupwizard(for
exampleifnoDHCPserverareavailable),ifyounoneedtobenefitoftheCalexiumoffer"Onedomainnameforfree
foroneyear",thisofferrequiringInternetaccessfullyfunctional.
5.2 Domain name settings
Thisscreenallowsyoutocreateanewdomainname,orreuseanexistingdomainasyourown.
Thispageappearsonlyifyougettheoffer«afreedomainnameforoneyear».Otherwise,thesecond
optionisselectedandyougodirectlytothescreenforenteringthedomainname.

5.2.1 Option 1: Create a new domain name
Ifyouchosetheoptiontocreateanewdomainname,thewizardwillassistyouinfindinganavailablenameand
reserveit.Attheendofthiswizard,anewdomainnamehasbeencreatedandwillbeimmediatelyavailabletosend
andreceivee‐mails.
DuetoInternetdomainnameregulation,itrequiresanannualsubscription.The1styearisofferedforevery
purchaseofaMailFountain(offersubjecttoconditionsseeonwww.calexium.com).You'reactuallytheownerofthis
domainname,Calexiumisonlyaresellerandtechnicalcontact,andyoucanalwaysasktotransferthemanagement
attheregistrarofyourchoice.Eachyear,itwillbeofferedtorenewthissubscription.You'refreetodosoornot.
5.2.2 Option 2: Using an existing domain name
Inthispage,enterthenameofexistingdomainforwhichyouwanttomanagee‐mailswithMailFountain.
ToallowaMailFountaintoreceivee‐mailsforthedomain,itisimperativetochangetheconfigurationoftheDNS
(DomainNameServers)toyourregistrar(theproviderofyourdomainname).
YouwillfindthenecessaryinformationinChapter6.3Setting DNS for your Internet domain.

5.3 Select Time Zone
ThenextpageallowsyoutoselectthetimezoneusedbyMailFountainfortimestampingthee‐mailssentand
received.
5.4 SMTP server configuration
Thispageletsyouselectthemodeforsendinge‐mailsthroughMailFountain.
Initsstandardconfiguration,MailFountainwillalwayssenddirectlyyoure‐mail.It’sthemostpowerfulandtotally
independentfromtheInternetServiceProvider(ISP).ButsomeISP,intheirabusivepoliticalofstruggleagainstthe
spam,blocktheport25.HencethatISPpermitsonlytheuseofthatportforsendinge‐mailthroughtheirown
servers.Ifyouareinthiscase,selectthesecondoptionandavoidsendingtoomanymailings.Weadviseyouto
changeyouISPtowhichallowsthe25portopen,staticIPandpreferablywithReverseDNS.
However,evenifyouselect'directsend'MailFountainwillstillaskyoutoentersettingsallowingittousetheISP's
servers.ThisallowsMailFountainbypasssomeobstacles,inthiscaseitimposedbytherecipientsserver,whomay
decidearbitrarily(andwithoutanyrespectforInternetstandards)toblocke‐mailsfromyourIPaddress.
MailFountainseektodetectsuchsituationsandusetheISP'sserversonlyinthesecases.

TherearesomesettingsrelatedtoyourInternetaccessthatcanreducethesecases,andvalidateyourIP
addressfromavastmajorityofserversworldwide.Morecompleteinformationandupdateareavailable
onourwebsite(www.calexium.com)insupportsection.
5.5 Create administrator password
Oncethewizardcompletes,you'llneedtologinasanadministratortoviewand/ormodifythesettingsof
MailFountain.TheAdministratoraccountusernameis"admin".Enterinthatpagethepasswordyouwanttologin.
Besuretokeepit.
Ifyouforgettheadministratorpassword,youcanalwaysaccesstheMailFountainbyenteringthesecuritycode
printedonthewarrantycardsuppliedwiththeMailFountain.Inthatcase,oncethesecuritycodeisentered,youwill
beaskedtochooseanewpasswordforadministratoraccess.
5.6 Create the 1st e-mails accounts
Youcomenowtothefinalconfigurationstep:thecreationofemailaccounts.

Twoaccountshavebeencreatedforyou:
‐postmaster(Directeurducourrier):whomanagesthemessages,usersandtheproblemsonthee‐mails
servere‐mails.Thedefaultpasswordis«postmaster»
‐abuse:Thisaccountisusedtoreceiverequeststounsubscribefrommailingsoranyabusecomplainfroma
recipientwhoreceivese‐mailfromyourdomain.Thedefaultpasswordis«abuse»
Itisrecommendedtochangethedefaultpassword
Tocompletethewizardmode,youmustatleastcreateanotheraccount.A"FinishWizard"buttonwillappearbelow.

6.1 Connect to MailFountain
WithyourInternetbrowser,typeintheaddressbarhttp://mail.thenameofyourdomain,egifyourdomainismy-
company.biztype«http://mail.my-company.biz».Thefollowinghomepagewillappear.

UsingtheURL'http://mail.my‐company.biz'worksystematicallyifMailFountainactsasrouter(therouter
modeisactivebydefault).
ButifMailFountainisinservermode,theproperfunctioningofthisURLdependsonseveralparameters:
‐TheconfigurationofDNSforyourdomainname(theword‘mail’mustprefixyourdomainname
andtheIPaddressmustbethepublicIPofyourconnection).
‐Theabilityand/ortheconfigurationofyourcurrentrouter.Itmustnotonlybeabletore‐route
requestsinternally,butport80shouldberedirectedtotheMailFountain.
Otherwise,itisstillpossibletoaccessMailFountainusingitsIPaddress.
Thereare3waystoconnecttoMailFountain:
‐Asanadministrator(LoginName=‘admin’)
‐Asmanagerofoneormoredomains(Multi-domains models only S200 & M500).Anidentifierhasbeen
assignedbytheadministrator.

6.2 Integrate MailFountain into your network
Thisstepisessential.MailFountainneedstointeractwithboththeInternetandyourLAN.Tosimplifythis
configurationMailFountainactbydefaultasarouter/firewallandcansimplybeplacedintoaheadofyourlocal
network.Thisisconvenientifyouhaven’tknowledgeofnetworksetting.Butthisconfigurationisnotimposedatall,
andifyouhavethenecessaryskills(internalorexternal),youcantotallysetMailFountaintofitlikeanyotherserver
inyournetwork.
6.2.1 MailFountain in router mode (default mode)

Inthismode,youhavetonotworryaboutalmostanything.JustmakesurethatMailFountainaccesstoInternet(see
Section6.2.1.2:Settingnetwork)anddefinethesimplifiedcharacteristicsofyourLAN.
6.2.1.1 The Ethernet plugs
Inthismode,theEthernetpluglocatedtotherightneartheUSBportisconsideredtakingtheInternet(orWAN).On
thisoneitshouldconnectthemodem
TheothertwoEthernetplugscalledLANcorrespondtoyourLAN.Soyoucanconnectonityourcomputers,printers,
etc.Ofcourseyoucanalsoconnectanetworkswitchinordertoinstallmoreequipment(themaximumis253units).
6.2.1.2 Network settings
AsAdministrator,opentheNetworkconfigurationpage:

1) Makesurethatthecheckbox"Enableroutermode"ischecked.
2) ThenchoosethemodeofInternetaccess.3choicesareshown:
•Static IP:SelectthisifyouarepartofasubnetandyouhaveassignedafixedIPaddress.
•Automatic IP:Usethisoptionifyourconnectiondoesnotrequireenteringapairusername/password.
SomeISPsactuallyproposesanautomaticidentificationwiththeirmultifunctionbox.Caution,makesurethe
boxisproperlyconfiguredasasinglemodem(routerfunctionsdisabled).
•PPPoE:ifyourconnectionrequiresausernameandpassword,thenyouarecertainlyinthatmode.
3) Andfinally,settheLANconfiguration.Here,theonlypossiblechoiceistheIPaddressoftheMailFountainin
theLAN(usually192.168.1.1shouldbeverygood).Forsimplicity,thesubnetmasknetworkis
predeterminedandcannotbechanged.
6.2.1.3 Router configuration
TherouterfeaturesofMailFountainaredeliberatelysimpleinordertoremainaccessibletoall,butcanstillrespond
toavastmajorityofsituations.Bydefault,MailFountainisalreadyfullyconfiguredandrequiresnomodificationof
theseparameters.YouwillhavetointerveneifyouhavespecificneedsoutsidetheframeworkofMailFountain.

Thispageletsyouconfigureessentially2elements:
1) TheDHCPserver(thatserverassignsautomaticallyanIPaddresstoanyequipmentconnectedtoyour
LAN).Youcanenableordisable,andsettheIPaddressrangetobegranted.
2) Theroutingrulesforincomingconnections.IfyouhaveotherserversonyourLAN,andthatthese
serversmustbeaccessiblefromoutside(internet),thenyoucanaddrulesforportforwardingtothese
servers.Thenumberruleisnotlimited;simplypressthebutton"Add"andnewlineappear.
6.2.2 MailFountain in Server mode

Asserver,MailFountainissimplyadeviceinyourlocalnetwork.Thatistosaythatproperlyconfigured,MailFountain
canaccesstheInternet.Butontheotherhand,nobodycanaccessitfromoutside,nowthisisrequiredtoallowat
leastMailFountainreceivee‐mails.
Youmustthereforesetportforwardingonyourrouter(see6.2.2.3Portstoredirect)
6.2.2.1 The Ethernet plugs
Inthismode,thethreeEthernetplugsareequivalentandbehaveexactlylikeanetworkswitch.Youcanuseitto
connectotherdevicesonyourLAN.

theparametersforallowingMailFountaintoaccesstotheInternet(thegatewayandatleastoneDNS).

Atleast,toreceiveyoure‐mail,youneedtoforwardport25(SMTP)toMailFountain.Butotherportwillbe
redirectedinordertoexploitotherfeaturesoftheMailFountain.

IfthedomainnamewascreatedbyMailFountainatitsfirststart,bychance,youhaveabsolutelynothingtodo;
you'rereadytoreceivee‐mails.

Butifyoualreadyhavethedomain,we'llhavetochangesettings.Forthis,severaloptionsarepossible.
6.3.1 Manual configuration of your DNS
Theexactproceduredependsentirelyoftheregistrarofyourdomain.Wecanthereforeonlyexplainwhatthe
differentsettingstochangeoradd.Ifyou'renotconfidentwithsettingaDNSserver,itisstronglyrecommendasking
toaspecialisttodoit;otherwiseabadconfigurationcouldmakeyourdomaininaccessible.Youcanalsocontact
yourregistrar’ssupporttoensurethemanagementofyoudomainnamebyprovidingthefollowinginformation,
perhapstheywillagreetodoitforyou.
Thereare3parameterstoaddand/ormodify,including2mandatory:
Addatype'A'recordbypointinganame(orsubdomain)totheIPaddressofyourInternetconnection.

6.4.1 Create a user account in MailFountain
Tocreateauseraccount,youmustbeloggedasdomainmanageroradministrator.
Onceconnected,selectthedomainnamethattheusermustbeadded(onamulti‐domainmodelonlyS200or
M500).Thefollowingscreenwillshowup.
Theformtocreateanewaccountrequiresonlyfewparameters:
Login:isthepartthatprefixesthee‐mail.Example,ifyouenter«john.doe»andyouarein«my‐company.biz»,you
willhavethefollowinge‐mail«[email protected]».
‐Fullname:Freetextdescribingtheaccount.Thisnamewillappearintherestoftheinterfacewhenselecting
ane‐mail.Example,«JohnDOE»isagoodchoiceforourpreviousexample.But«ChiefAccountant»be
equally.Itdependsonyourorganization.
‐Password:Isthepasswordthatwillservebothtoviewe‐mailaccount,tosendandconnecttotheWebMail.
Thispasswordmustcontainatleast6characters.Youmustenter2timesbysecurity.
Oncetheaccountiscreated,youcanalwaysedititbyclickingonthelistandedititssettings(name,password,etc.).
OnlytheLogincan’tbechanged.
6.4.2 Mailer settings
Tosendandreceivee‐mailswithyournewaccount,youmustconfigureyourpreferredmailer(outlook,thunderbird,
Applemail,etc.).
