Overview
This document provides instructions for installation and initial configuration of the Canoga
Perkins model L357 ESU (Ethernet Service Unit). The EdgeAccess L357 Ethernet Service Unit
is a managed Ethernet and Fast Ethernet Compliant device that supports native 10Mbps,
100Mbps and 1000Mbps Transparent LAN extension circuits. The L357 offers 10/100/1000 auto
sensing or software configurable User Interface and a variety of optical network interfaces. The
L357 is modular and hot swappable with a common form factor to mount in Canoga Perkins’
Carrier Class Universal Chassis System (UCS) as well as a variety of Customer Premise
Enclosures (CPE).
Parts List
1 x L357-xxxx
1 x UCS 1000 or UCS 1002 chassis
1 x UCS 1001 chassis
1 x UCS 1230 BAM (Bus Access Module)
1 x Model 1020-xxxx (management access CPE) or 1030-xxxx (unmanaged CPE)
1 x EIA-232 serial cable (straight)
1 x EIA-232 to DB9 converter (Canoga Perkins p/n CRJ-D9F-10)
Step 1: Unpacking
Unpack the L357 and check the unit for damage. If the unit is damaged, contact Canoga Perkins’
Tech Support line, (800) 360-6642, and ask for an RMA.
Step 2: Module Set Up
Before installation into a chassis or enclosure, you must verify the application in which the L357
will be used, i.e. 10Mbps, 100Mbps or 1000Mbps Ethernet, managed or non-managed etc. The
application may require setting the dip switches located at the rear of the L357. If the unit is to be
installed in the UCS 1030 enclosure, set the L357 to the desired configuration using Table 1 as a
reference. Otherwise, the L357 can be configured through software to the desired configuration
when installed in the UCS 1000, 1001, 1002 or 1020.

Step 3: Module Installation
Several options for installation are available for the L357. For applications requiring multiple
modules in the same location, depending on the size and quantity requirements, the UCS 1000,
UCS 1001 or 1002 chassis may be used. The L357 is also hot-swappable module and it can be
inserted any time without interruption of service to other modules in the chassis.
Chassis or Enclosure Maximum number of L357s
UCS 1000* 19 (AC Power) 21 (DC Power)
UCS 1001 4
UCS 1002* 9
UCS 1020 1
UCS 1030 1
*Note: Due to power requirements, the maximum number of L357s installable in the chassis
may be different if other modules are installed. Consult Canoga Perkins’ Tech Support for
further assistance.
Insert the L357 in an available slot in the 1230 or UCS 1002 making sure that the unit is lined-up
with the card guides. The module should slide into the slot with ease and make contact with the
rear connector without excessive force. Tighten the thumbscrew after insertion. The same steps
apply when installing in the UCS 1020 or 1030. See Figures 2 to 5.

Step 4: Applying Power
When installing the module in an enclosure, power up the device by inserting a power cord to an
AC outlet. During the boot-up process, which may take up to 40 seconds, the LEDs will turn
amber and the STA LED will flash amber until the boot-up process is complete. If the switches
are set to the default setting, the STA LED will light up red, SPD amber and FDX green after the
boot-up process. All other LEDs on the module are off.
Step 5: Management Access
To access the user interface of the L357, a VT100 session must be created through
HyperTerminal or a comparable VT100 terminal. When accessing the management interface
through, connect a DB-9 EIA-232, straight cable from your PC or laptop (COM 1 or any open
COM port) to the EIA-232 port of the UCS 1020 or DMM. Accessing the management interface
through the 1230 BAM requires a DB-9 to RJ cable available through Canoga Perkins, p/n CRJ-
D9F-10.
Create a HyperTerminal session from your laptop or terminal through the
Programs/Accessories/Communications/HyperTerminal menu.

Assign an icon and a name for the session.
Figure 8. Connection Properties
After a name and icon is assigned, the COM port properties menu will appear. Configure the
connection settings to the values listed:
•Bits per second: 19200bps
•Data bits: 8
•Parity: None
•Stop bits: 1
•Flow control: None
•Terminal emulation: VT100
If the HyperTerminal screen is scrolling up, make sure that “Terminal Emulation” in the
Properties menu is set to VT100. If the screen shows random symbols instead of letters, verify
that the terminal speed is set to 19200bps.
In the log-in screen, type the default Username “admin” and the Password “admin” to access the
user interface. The MAIN MENU will appear and will allow you to make necessary
configuration changes based on your selection. Refer to the user manual for more detailed
information.
