Canon's TS-Elenses aretilt-shiftlenses
designedfor EOS cameras.Thetilt-shift
mechanism enables photographersto control
the depth of field and the area photographed
and to correct imagedistortion,making it
possible totake sophisticatedpictures that
cannot be shot using a conventionallens.
•Toensure thatyou makethemostof theTS-Elens
functionality,itisrecommended thatyou shoot in the
following conditions.
•Usean EOS camera with100%viewfinder visibility
(EOS-1,EOS-1Dor EOS-1Ds series) and usethe
laser matte withgrid focusing screenEc-D
•UseLive View
•Useatripod
•OnEOS cameras with abuilt-in flash, some partial
restrictions may applyto the shiftand rotation
functions.

& Safety Precautions
•Do not look at the sun or a bright light source
through the lens or camera.Doing socould result in
loss of vision.Looking at thesun directly through the
lensis especiallyhazardous.
•Whether it is attached to the camera or not,do not
leave the lens under the sun without thelens cap
attached.This is to prevent thelensfromconcentrating
the sun's rays,whichcould cause a fire.
•To mount/detach the lens,always move the tilt and
shift scales to "0".Fingers may get caught,or the
camera may bedamaged.
•When you tilt or shift the lens,sharp portions of the
tilt orshift mechanism are exposed and care should
be taken to avoid touching these portions.
•Do not operate the shift function while operating the
rotation function. You maybeinjured byhaving your
fingers caught.
Handling Cautions
•If thelens is taken from a cold environment into a
warmone,condensation may develop on the lens
surface and internal parts. To preventcondensation
in thiscase,firstput the lensinto an airtight plastic bag
beforetaking itfrom a coldto warm environment.Then
take out thelens after it has warmedgradually.Dothe
samewhentaking the lensfrom a warm environment
intoacold one.
•Do not leave thelens inexcessive heatsuchasin a
carin direct sunlight.High temperatures can cause
thelens to malfunction.
Countermeasures for harmful rays
The TS-E17mm f/4L has a wide angle of view,and the
lens protrudes from the frontframe,so it can be
affectedby harmful rays.To prevent flare and ghosting,
cutting off theharmful rays entering thelens with a piece
of cardboard isrecommended.

E24mm f/3.5L II,by usingboththehood andthemethod
used forTS-E1lmm f/4L.

rAbout the Shin Knob Cap
Shifting will be easier if the supplied shift knob cap is mounted (pA).
However,for EOScameras withbuilt-in flash, the cap willcome incontact with the cameraduring
thelens'mounting/detaching, orduring shift/rotation operation.The shiftknob cap isrecommended
for use with EOS-1,EOS-10,EOS-1Ds, and EOS 50series.
1 Remove the shift knob 2 Mount the cap by squeezing it into
screw.the shift knob, and then fixitusing
the supplied screw.
Toremove the cap,remove the
screw andpull out the cap.
U The screw (length 2.2mm) originally in the shift knob cannot beused to
keep the shift knob capin place.Always use the supplied screw.
[iIUse a watchmaker's screwdriver(Phillips head type) to remove or mount
screws.
Mounting/Removing the Lens Cap (TS-E17mm f/4L)
The lensof TS-E17mm f/4Lprotrudes from the front frame. To protect thelens,keep it covered with
the exclusive lens cap when not shooting.
•Removing
Toremove the cap,hold downthe button onthe side
andturn the cap in the directionofthe arrowuntil the
position mark on the cap aligns with the red dot.
[iI Theremoved lens cap can be hooked on the tripod
using the supplied strap.
•• Attaching
To attach the cap,alignthe cap's attachment position
mark with the red doton the front of the lens,then
turn the cap as shown by the arrowuntilthe lens'red
dot is aligned with the cap's stop position mark.
U Do not use the strap toliftthe lens while the lens
cap is attaching the lens. Thelens may fall and
break.

1.Mounting and Detaching the Lens
See your camera sinstructions for details on
mounting and detaching the lens.
o
•Whenmounting or detaching thelens, always
ensurethatthetilt and shiftscales are set tothe
"0"position.
•Afterdetachingthelens,place the lenswith the
rearend up toprevent thelens surface and
contacts fromgetting scratched.
•If the contacts getsoiled,scratched, or have
fingerprints on them,corrosionorfaulty
connections can result. The camera andlens
may notoperate properly.
•If the contacts getsoiled or have fingerprints on
them,clean themwith a soft cloth.
e If youremove thelens, cover it with the dust
cap. To attach it properly, align thelensmount
index andthe 0 index of the dustcap,and turn
clockwise.Toremove it, reverse the order.
2.Focusing
Focus a TS-E lens by turning the focusing ring.
(Shots cannot betaken usingthe auto focus.)
O. After using tilt orshift,readjust the focus.
•The distance scale is only valid whenthe tilt
scale isset to the"0"position.
CiI For cameras whichallow Live View Shooting,
focusing using theLCD monitor'smagnified image
isrecommended.
3. Tilt Function
Tilting inclines the lensrelative to theimage plane. When the tilt scale is set to the "0"position,the
focusingand imaging planes are parallel.However,tilting puts thefocusing plane at anangleto the
imagingplane .

To shoot so that all ofanextensive subject isin focus,youmust normallyuse a small aperture to
obtainalarge depth of field.But tilting allowsyou tokeep all of the subject in focus even whenthere
is insufficientdepth of field (Example1). Or,by tilting in the oppositedirection,youcan focus ona
specific part of the subject (Example 2).

Shifting moves the optical axis of the lens in parallel off the center of the imaging plane.
Shift can beused to good effect in the situations shown below.

Slide the tilt-lock button in the direction of
arrow A. Loosen the tilt lock knob by turning
it in the direction of arrow B.

Turn the tilt knob to adjust the amount of tilt.
Focus the shot by turning the focusing ring.
To keep the tilt scalelocked in the "0"position.slide
the tilt lock button in the direction of "LOCK",then turn
the tilt lock knob in the direction of the arrow shown in
Step 3.•When you are shooting a reflective
subject,you can move the camera to a
position where the camera does not
appear in the shot and then use shift to
take the picture. This lets you keep the
camera out of the shot without having
to change the shot composition.
•If you photograph a subject such as a
building with a normal lens, the top of
the building tapers away. But by placing
the camera parallel to the building and
shifting the lens,you can correct this
tapering effect.
o When you tilt the lens, sharp portions of the tilt
mechanism are exposed and care should be
taken to avoid touching these portions.

Turn the tilt lock knob in the direction of the
arrow to lock the amount of tilt for the shot.

o When youshift thelens,sharp portions of the shift mechanism are exposed and care shouldbe taken to
avoid touching these portions. For EOS cameras withbuilt-inflash,there may be contactwith the lens while
youoperatethe shift function.
aJ • With large amounts ofshift,the amounts of peripheral light at the top and bottomor left andright sides of
the screen may differ,so shooting with a small aperture isrecommended .
•Theshift operationwill be easier ifthe suppliedcap ismounted on the shift knob (p.6).
Therotation functionenables you to change thedirectionoftilt or
shift by rotatingthetilt-shift mechanism.
With thelens mounted on the camera, push the rotation lockrelease
button towardsthemount and then turn thetilt-shift mechanism.
•The rotationmechanismcan be rotated through ±90°. The lens clicks every
30°and locks in place in the 90°position.
o• When rotatingthe lens,set the tilt and shift scales tothe"0" position.
•Note that rotating the liII-shift mechanismquickly while pressing on the
rotation lock release button may cause the shiftlock knob tostrike your
fingers.
•Donot operatethe shift function while operatingthe rotation function.
You may be injured byhaving your fingers caught.
•For EOS cameras with built-in flash,there may be contact with thelens
while you operatetherotation function.
aJ In orderto prevent shiftsin positionwhile shooting,shooting while
rotation islocked, orshootingperclickposition isrecommended.

ByusingtheTSrotation function,
therelationship of thetilt and shift's
operation direction can switch from
rightangletoparallel.
Press theTS rotation lock release
button in themountingdirectionwhile
the lensismounted on the camera,
and thenturn thetilt component.
•There areclicksat the45°position,and
will befixedin either theright angle or
parallelposition.
o When thetilt and shift are used in aparalleldirection,
vignetting will occur in theareas marked in gray in the

The depth of field is thedistance in front of and
behindthe plane of focus on the subjectthat
appearssharp.The depth of field isindicated by
the areabetween thedepth-of-field scalelines
below thedistance scale.
[i] • The depth-of-field scaleis only valid when the
tilt scaleis setto the"0"position.
•Thedepth-of-fieldscaleis anapproximate
indicator.
7.Infrared Index
(TS-E24mm f/3.5L II)
Theinfrared indexcorrects thefocus setting
when usingmonochromeinfraredfilm. Focus on
the subject in MF,thenadjustthedistance
setting bymoving the focusing ring to the
corresponding infrared indexmark.
o Some EOS cameras cannotuseinfrared film. See
theinstructions foryour EOS camera.
[i] The infrared index position is based ona
wavelength of800 nm.
•Be sure to observe the manufacturer's
instructionswhen using infrared film.
•Use a red filteralso when you take thepicture.

8.TS·E Tripod Adapter (Sold Separately)
With some cameramodels, thetilt,shift and
rotation functions cannot beused when the
cameraismounted directlyonatripod. When
thishappens,fit the optional TS-Etripod adapter
into thetripod mount socketon the camera
beforemountingthe camera on thetripod.
9. Exposure
Shots can be taken using AE (automatic
exposure) as long as thetilt and shift scales are
set tothe"0"position.
Theuse of AE isnot recommendedwhen the
lensistiltedorshifted asexposure errorsmay
result. Itis recommended that you usethe
exposure valueswhen thetilt and shift scales
areset tothe"0"position as aguide and then
take theshot with as many exposure settings as
possible.
The EW-88B lenshood cankeep unwanted light outof thelens,andalso protectsthelensfrom
rain,snoW,anddust.
To attachthe hood,align thehood's attachment
position mark with thered doton thefrontofthelens,
then turn thehoodas shown bythe arrow until the lens'
reddot is aligned withthehood's stop position mark.
Thehood can be reverse-mountedon thelensfor
storage.
•• When attaching ordetaching thehood, grasp thebase of thehood toturnit. Toprevent deformation,do not
grasp therimof thehood to turnit.
III• Cutting offharmful rays entering thelensbyusing bothahood as well as a piece ofcardboard is
recommended .
•Ahood isnotavailablefor TS-E17mm f/4L.

11. FiIters (Sold Separately)

You canattach filtersto the filter mounting
thread on the front ofthe lens.
U. Only one filter may be attached.
•Use a polarizing Canon filter(82mm).
12.Infinity Compensation Mark
(TS-E24mm f/3.5L II)
Distance index
To compensate for shifting oftheinfinity focus
point that results from changes in temperature.
The infinity position at normaltemperature isthe
point atwhich the verticalline of theLmark is
alignedwith the distance indicator on the
distance scale.

through the viewfinder's magnified image'or the
LCDscreen's magnified image'while rotating the
focusing ring.
