SLR Cameras
Mario Moreno
Photographer
“Sunset is a great time to capture
silhouettes, because of the contrast
and the colours. But you’d better
work fast. There’s only a few
minutes to get the perfect shot.”
SLR Cameras
When the first step is the
most important
As a photographer just starting out, buying an EOS camera is one of the
most important purchases you can make. That’s because you’re not just
buying a camera. You’re investing in a camera system.
THE ULTIMATE CAMERA SYSTEM
Currently with five different body models and more than 60 compatible
EF lenses, Canon digital EOS offers you the widest, most flexible camera
system. It also offers a guarantee of futur development. Massive
R&D investment into core technology areas – such as CMOS sensors,
electronics, integrated circuitry and lens technologies – has led Canon
to a string of firsts.
First consumer D-SLR to shoot at 8 frames per second. First to
break the 16-megapixel barrier. Choose EOS and you join a tradition
of Canon innovation with a proud past and an exciting future.
NOT JUST A CAMERA BODY
EOS photographers have access to a vast and compelling array of
features, lenses and accessories. Wireless flash units. Lenses with built-in
optical Image Stabiliser technology. The world’s fastest auto-focus
system powered by Canon’s Ultrasonic Motors. Macro lenses. 45-point
auto-focusing. Tilt-Shift lenses for architectural photography. Wireless
File Transmitters for image downloads while shooting. Professional RAW
image-processing software.
Every EOS body has the same easy, familiar feel. So, as beginning
photographers move up through the range, the transition is fluid
and intuitive.
20 Years of Innovation
March, 1987. Canon marked its 50th anniversary with the launch of
the EOS 650. Equipped with a lens mount supporting a radically different
type of lens system, the camera introduced a new level of performance to
SLR photography. EOS had arrived.
20 years on, and the ethos of innovation that defined
the very first EOS remains at the core of Canon’s SLR
development strategy. Continued investment in research has
assured Canon’s place at the forefront of SLR technology.
But it is feedback from professionals in the field that shapes
the advancements and refinements found in each new
era of the EOS evolution.
By listening to its users over the past two decades, Canon
has consistently raised the bar on what’s possible in
SLR photography. Analogue-era developments such as USM
technology have been complemented by a raft of innovations
in the digital age: CMOS sensors delivering lower noise and
wider dynamic range; continuous shooting at faster frame rates
with greater detail; menus, controls and ergonomics tailored to
the demands of the photographers who use them.
The EOS-1D Mark III when combined with the entire range of
EOS system accessories and EF lenses represents the very
pinnacle of Canon’s achievement. 20 years of innovation
distilled into a set of groundbreaking new tools for the working
photographer. Welcome to the next era in SLR photography.

Ingo Arndt
Wildlife photographer
“The quiver tree in Namibia
always makes a dramatic
subject. It’s actually a kind
of overgrown aloe that can
grow to nine metres tall and
live for 300 years.”
SLR Cameras
CMOS
Every digital EOS camera features Canon’s CMOS sensor technology
– developed, designed and built in-house by Canon. One of Canon’s
core technology platforms, CMOS gives the EOS range a number of
distinct advantages.
CMOS sensors are easier on power than other sensor types. An amplifier
at each CMOS sensor pixel site avoids unnecessary charge transfer
operations, vastly speeding up the process of getting the signal to the
image processor. This is one of the reasons for the fast frame rates of EOS
cameras. Having amplifiers at each pixel site also reduces the heat which
otherwise causes noise, particularly noticeable at high ISO settings and
long exposure times.
Secondly, having sensor development and manufacture in house allows
Canon to produce a range of purpose built sensors, with each sensor
specified to meet the exact requirements of the EOS model for which it
is intended.
DIGIC
Canon’s revolutionary DIGIC image processors work at the heart of
every EOS digital camera. It is the power of DIGIC that delivers the
superb EOS image quality, responsive camera performance, faster AF,
faster continuous shooting and extended battery life.
Many times faster than other image processors, DIGIC II has been developed
by Canon’s engineers for the specific purpose of performing the super high
speed calculations necessary to providing exceptionally accurate colour
reproduction in real time.
DIGIC technology does not run as software, but as hardware built into
the camera's circuitry. As such it is able to carry out the duties of a number
of separate processing units, effectively replacing them to save time,
space and power.
DIGIC processors are so fast they can read, process, compress and
write image data back to the buffer between exposures, reducing the data
bottleneck for extended continuous shooting.
Michel Denis-Huot
World Press Photo winner
“We parked on the riverbank near
a known crossing point. Then, we
waited. It was a long time before
the herd appeared. They stood for
several hours until one brave
wildebeest plucked up the courage
to dive in and cross. And the rush
was on. An hour later, they were
all gone.”
Magic moments
Wildlife photographer and World Press Photo winner Michel Denis-Huot has
been using Canon’s EOS system to capture the wildlife of the Masai Mara for
nearly 20 years.
“What animal photography is really about is searching for
the impossible,” says Michel. “You can go for days and days
without seeing anything particularly extraordinary. And then,
suddenly, there’s that magic moment right in front of you.”
After 32 years photographing the plains of Africa, Michel is all too
familiar with the unpredictability of his subjects. “The problem
is that you can never plan what an animal is going to do. So you
can’t leave anything else to chance. You must know when and
where they are likely to appear. And be prepared to wait.”
“That special shot combines magical light, perfect positioning,
and great action from the animal. Sometimes when you take
a picture, you know immediately that everything is right.”

Out of the blue
Peter Kruithof
Operations manager
Nine to five can be such a grind. When I get
away, I want to escape from it all. Just me, my camera and a
warm, gentle breeze.
When I took up paragliding, I took up a Canon EOS 400D.
It’s lightweight and powerful enough to stand up to any
challenge I can think of, with spectacular results every time.
For me, the thrill is about breaking bonds – the freedom to
capture anything, from any angle.
I got this shot at Oludeniz in southern Turkey. Clear skies,
steep hills and turquoise seas – you can’t ask for more perfect
conditions than that. The experience and the photos were
both breathtaking!
Welcome to the

A good photo captures the world as we
know it. A great photo reveals the world
as we’ve never seen it before.
Remember how to play? Let your hair down. Try something
new. Get a fresh perspective on life. It’s as easy as grabbing a
camera and seeing what you can see.
Life’s a playground. And Canon provides the ‘toys’ to bring out

Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2
The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 is a signal transmitter dedicated to
E-TTL Wireless Autoflash. Enables flash ratio control up to two groups
of 580EX’s and 430EX’s with simplified operation.
Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX
Close-up Flash unit for use with the MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5X,
EF 50mm f/2.5, EF 100mm f/2.8 and EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro lenses. It offers a
wide range of features with selected settings shown on a large, easy-to-read LCD
panel. The MR-14EX features E-TTL flash technology. When used with Speedlite
580EX and 430EX units, wireless control of up to three slave groups is possible.
Maximum guide number is 14 (m/ISO 100).
Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX
Close-up flash unit for use with all EF macro lenses. Similar in design to the
Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX, except that the two flash units are further apart and
are fully adjustable both vertically and horizontally. The guide number is also
higher at 24 (m/ISO 100, with both heads firing).
Speedlite 220EX
The 220EX is especially designed to work with the E-TTL Autoflash system.
The E-TTL pre-stored evaluative system used in these flashguns fires a preflash to
determine the flash output required. The flashes synchronise to all shutter speeds
in High-speed Sync mode. The 220EX has a guide number of 22 (m/ISO 100).
Connecting Cord 60 /
Connecting Cord 300*
Dedicated flash connection cords in
lengths of 0.6m and 3m.
TTL Hot-shoe Adapter 3*
Mounts on the camera Accessory
Shoe. Provides a socket for the
connecting cord and Hot-shoe
for Off-camera or Multiple Flash.
TTL Distributor*
Provides four connection sockets for
linking the TTL Hot-shoe adapter 3 to
up to three off-camera shoe adapters.
Off-camera Shoe Adapter OA-2*
Slips onto the base of a Speedlite,
providing a connecting cord socket
for Off-camera Flash. Can be fixed
to a tripod.
Speedlite Accessories
Off-camera Shoe Cord OC-E3
This accessory lets you use a Speedlite up to 0.6 m away from the camera while
retaining full flash dedication. One connector slides into the camera Accessory
Shoe, the other connector slides onto the base of the Speedlite. The Speedlite
connector is fitted with a tripod.
Speedlite Bracket SB-E2
Positions the flash to one side of the camera. It helps prevent damage to
the Speedlite’s mounting foot or camera’s hot shoe in case of collisions.
When shooting in portrait orientation, the bracket helps suppress unnatural
shadows. The bracket comes complete with an off-camera shoe cord, and
allows in situ battery replacement.
* Not compatible with EOS Digital SLR cameras and EOS 300X
Featuring E-TTL II and AF-assist compatibility with EOS systems, adjustable zoom
range of 14-105mm when fitted with the wide panel and 3.7 second recycle time.
The flash head can be rotated a full 180° left, 90° right and 90° up.
Speedlite 430EX
The Speedlite 430EX has a guide number of 43 (m/ISO 100 at 105mm), ideal for
telephoto and bounce flash work. Designed with digital photographers in mind,
the unit shares many Speedlite 580EX features, including autozoom control to
match EOS body sensor sizes and colour temperature information transmission
for white balance optimisation.
Speedlite 580EX II
The Speedlite 580EX II is Canon’s most powerful Speedlite. A guide number of
58 (m/ISO 100 at 105mm) gives the unit an abundance of capacity for many
shooting situations, including telephoto work and bounce flash applications.
An adjustable angle of coverage is suitable for use with wide lenses to 14mm.
It acts as a wireless master to compatible slave units, or as a slave to other
Speedlite transmitters such as the ST-E2.
The Speedlite 580EX II is a key component of the integrated flash system for both
Analogue and Digital SLR cameras. It is fully compatible with the distance linked
E-TTL II system found on recent EOS cameras. When fitted to all EOS cameras
released after January 2003, the zoom flash ensures accurate coverage by
auto-adjusting to the camera's sensor size.
Colour temperature data is transferred between digital EOS cameras and the
Speedlite to obtain optimum white balance for more stable colours. A focus
assist-beam suits all EOS AF systems.
Despite high power and short recycling times, the unit is small and lightweight.
A left-right 180
°
bounce allows either left or right vertical camera orientation for
portrait work. A retractable catch light reflector is built-in.
An intuitive and ergonomic interface includes a new select dial for fast setting
alterations, and a bounce lock release button for immediate control over the
bounce head angle. Custom functions can be pre-set for fast access to commonly
used settings.
When Speedlite 580EX II is used with EOS-1D Mark III the newly designed flash
foot allows for the same environmental sealing you expect from EOS-1 series
cameras.
Speedlites
Accessories
Designed to work with all Speedlite flash units, the new E-TTL II
flash algorithm – incorporated into all current EOS digital SLR’s
and some analogue SLR’s provides photographers with
consistently accurate flash metering, even with tricky subjects
and ambient lighting conditions. As well as taking into account
subject distance information provided by compatible EF lenses,
E-TTL II monitors readings from multiple metering zones.
To achieve accurate measurement in problematic environments,
the system gives less weight to readings from reflective objects
in the scene such as a mirror, white china, or bride’s wedding
dress. The system works to provide accurate flash exposures
in scenes that confuse conventional metering systems.
E-TTL II Flash Algorithm
Achieve perfect flash exposure in any situation with Canon’s
E-TTL II flash system.
