Note: This is a technical manual intended for service personnel use. It
is a caxpanion document to the Model C-9 0wher's Manual. Far in-

Ormer I s Manual for detailed instructions and recer[Irendations.

SFT2
i.0 IrmoDLXITloN:
This ltianual is designed to address twro primary areas of concern
encountered when a ltodel C-9 is bronght in for repair:
A. The manual Contains those critical test procedures and expected
results necessary to determine whether or not the unit is
functioning as intended by design.
8. The manual provides diagnostic methods for locating the offending
circuit elelrent(s} once a valid malfunction has been detected.
The Model C-9 is unusual from the service perspective because of the
highly critical, ]pret almost totally subjective, nature of its function.
Obvious problems such as grces distortion, hun, noise or lack of an output
signal are, of Course, easy to recognize and categorize as true
maLl functions. Unfortunately ( frcm the service person' s perspective ) , these
kinds of problens are relatively rare in the Model C-9. In fact, about
half of the units received at the factory repair center exhibit absolutely
no malfuntion whatscever i
This is because several essential elements necessary to achieve the
cptimm experience of Sonic Holography are external to the C-9 itself . A
cursory reading. of the C-9 Cmer's Manual reveals that the C-9 haLrdrare is
siltply one elerient of a total psychcracoustic system responsible for
providing the exciting, yet subtle and extrerrely subjective perception of
Sonic Hblography. Some C-9 armers have been prenature in assuming
fault with the unit vlhen problens with the Hologram Effect are perceived.
Mbre often than not, a thorangh reading of the C-9 0unerts Marmal and
conscientious adherence to its reearmendations will resolve most problems a
customer might have in achieving the ultimate experience Sonic Holography
can prcrfuce.
Since no piece of test equipment has been designed that is capable of
perceiving and quantifying Sonic Hblngraphy effects in terms of Volts,
Ohas, Axperes, decibels, percentages or Eiertz, the Carver Corporation has
develc]ped a series of sixple and straightfcrmrard test prcoedures which will
absolutely verify or deny the prqper operation and correct aligrment of the
critical Sonic Holngraphy processing circuitry. These verif ication
prcoedures reqLiire only crmmon items of test equipment found on any
professional audio test bench and a basic level of technical skill.
2.o IBERTIF¥IRE TFH pROErm:
Before beginning any bench \rork, identify the general category of the
custerrer's oatplaint and use the following outline to lot:ate the reported
problen, in terms of three categories, cat:h of which leads to a specif ic set
of tests designed to determine whether or rrot the C-9 is at fault and then,
if it is, to help locate the offending circuitry.

4.5 If the sixply voltages are within linits and a gross malfunction per-

A. One channel dead.. .suspect bad solder connections and/or a short

8. Gross hun on one ar both channels.. .check the pouer supplies for
excessive Zic ripple ccl[ponents {>50 millivolts}. If this is not
the cause, lock for apen ground connections.
C. Gross distortion an cme or both channels„ .can be caused by a

output signal present, poser the unit deem for 5 seconds. tftyon
turn-on, both outputs should be attenuated at least 20dB for about
one second. If both chapels fail this test, suspect the FRI drive
cirouitry surrounding IC3. IC3 pin 12 should exhibit a positive

seecmd or tva. If the F" gate drive is correct, suspect the FH{s}.

5.o IC REPLACHmFT
Subtle yet excessive levels of noise or distortion are invariably
caused by ''below-spec" ICs. Prior to replacing any IC for these reasons,
hchirever, run the noise and distortion tests below:
5.1 mstall shorting plngs in both inputs. Connect an IRE "A" veighted
f ilter at the input of an AC voltmeter. All switches should remain in
the positions described earlier (INI. Rrmlo & LIST. ANGIE are Our,
Hch"RAM is IN}. The ran noise output of either channel should
measure less than 30 microvolts. If an "A" veighting filter is not
available, the noise may be measured "flat". A good rule of thumb in
the case of the ICs used in the C-9 is to expect about three tines the
noise reading betveen an ''A" veighted measurenent and a "flat" one.
Any reading below 100 microvolts { flat} is considered acceptable.
5.2 If output noise exceeds the specification, probe the outputs of each
successive stage's IC§ until the offending chip{s) are located and
replace them.
5.3 Distortion is to be measured at the "rated" output of 2V rms. All the
front panel pushbuttons are to be engaged {in} and the bandwidth of
the distortion analyser should be limited by use of an 80kHz filter to
suppress RFI since the cover is rermc]ued. Under these conditions, the
TID readings should fall below 0.05% for any frequency betneen 20Hz
and 20kHz.
5.4 If HH) exceeds the specification, probe the outputs of each successive
stage's ICs until the offending chip{s) are located and replace than.
5.5 It is our experience that if noise and 'HH) specifications are net, the
IM distortion will almays fall below the specified level. If you wish
to measure it, be sure to use the standard SMPRE frequency mix and
signal ratios. The resulting lrEasurement should be below .05% at the
rated {2 Volt) output.
5.6 If cecillation {self-sustained ringing) is the problen, locate the
earliest IC output node in the circuitry at which it is present and
replace the offending part.
6. o FunrerloEL vmlFlcAIION
Cmce the basic circuitry is functioning without obvious problems,
tests may be ccxpleted to determine the critical aligrment of the primary
Holographic circuits. Since these circuits purposely cross-feed portions
of the stereo signal, expect a considerable amount of "crosstalkft between
channels. This is normal and irell controlled. Begin with all pushbuttons
in their Our positions.
6.i Drive both inputs with a lkHz signal at OdEm {.775 Vrms) and verify
the presence of identical signals at each output. Switch the mmceRAM
funetion to its on (IN) position.
6.2 Using a dual-trace oscillosccpe, connect one probe to IC2, pin 4 and
set the scope's triggering to activate and lcok en that signal.
