TILLING,
GENERAL
The
J-72mechanicaldriverotarytillerisanunusually
versatile
attachment.Completefamiliarity
with
its
capabilities
andoperatingcharacteristicswillenableyou
to
secure
maximumbenefitsforyourgarden.
This
rotary
tillerhasbeenthoroughlyfield-testedundera wideva-
rietyofoperatingconditions,andthefinalcombination
oftinegeometry,tine
spacing,
shaftspeedandcontrol
system
hasbeenproventobethemostsuitableforvar-
iedfieldconditions.Youwillfindthisattachmenthigh-
lydurableandproductiveinyourgardeningactivities.

Thefamiliarmoldboardplowperformsa tilling
function,
butwheretheplowturnsthe
soil
inlongfolds
or
furrowstherotarytillerturnsthe

AERATION
For
aerationpurposesthetillershouldsimplydisturb
the
soil
surfacewithoutcompletelyturningitover....in
much
thesamemannerasinsertinga spadeeachfew

soil
inclumps.Thesurfaceof
the
soil
shouldbe
left
veryrough,
with
occasional
holes
and
deepfracturestoseveral
inches.
This
permitsready
penetrationofairandmoisture
with
minimumdangerof
erosion
orcrusting.Previouslytilledgardenareascanbe
aeratedbyoperatingthetilleratcomparativelyrapid
travelspeeds....whereinthetilleralmost"walks"
with
thetractor....tinesshouldenterandexitthe
soil
with
minimumtearingandchurning.
SEEDBED
PREPARATION
Tillingforseedbedpreparationrequiresa morethorough
workingofthe
soil
structuretobreakitupintosmall
enough
particlestoprovideintimatecontactbetween
soil
and
seed.
Theidealstructureprovidesa relatively
finegrained
soil
structuredownto
seed
depth,
with
pro-
gressively
coarser
grainedstructuredowntothe
full
till-
ingdepth.Theinterfacebetweentilledanduntilled
strata
shouldberoughtopermitpercolationofwater....
a
smooth,interface,likehardpan,tendstoserveasa
barriertodeepwaterandrootpenetration.
Whenpreparingseedbedsitisgenerally
necessary
touse
successive
passes
overthesameareatoachievedesired
depthandtexture....each
successive
pass
providesa finer
texturetotheupperlayerswhiteaddingtodepthof
penetration.Allowthetillerto"work"itswayintothe
soil
bykeepingthetractortravelspeedslowbutsteady,
and
offsetyourtillingpatha few
inches
over
from
the
previous
pathso
that
tineswill

trail

CULTIVATION
ANDWEEDCONTROL
Set
thetillerfora shallowdepthofonetotwoinches
forcultivatingandweedcontrolactivities.Avoidover-
pulverizationofthesoil
since
thistendsto"crust"with
rainor"dust"awaywithwind.
The
removabledragshieldinitsnormalposition
serves
as
anadditionalbounceshieldforbreakingupthesoilto
a
finer,uniformtexture.Thetrailingserrationsevenout
thetilledsoiltoleavea smoothsurface,readyforlawn
seeding
orgardenplanting.Theshieldiseasilyremov-
ablefortillinginpaddies,forroughtillingoraeratingas
youprefer.
ORCHARD
CULTIVATION
Fill
groundshouldbetilledjustpriortotheapplication
oftopsoiltoaidinforminganinterlacedstructurebe-
tweentopsoiland
fill
soil....toaidinwaterandroot
penetration.
MIXING,BLENDING
Fertilizers,
chemicals,manure,humus,oldsawdust,com-
post
orothergrowthproducingsoiladditivescanbe
effectivelymixedintothesoilbydispersingthismater-
ialoverthegroundjustpriortotilling.Iftheareatobe
tilledistoughthenbroadcasttheadditivesbetween
suc-
cessive
tiller
passes
toobtainmosteffectiveblending.
Special
purposesoilblendsforpotting,hothouse,green-
house,
orotherapplicationscanbequicklyandeasily
developedwiththistiller.Similarly,soilstructuremod-
ifiers
such
as
sand,
gravel,sawdustandwoodchipscan
betilledintothesoiltoforma desiredsoil
base.
Periodic
cultivationbetweenhedgerowsortreerowswill
providea continuousroughsurfaceforgreatestabsorp-
tionofwater. SUMMARY
The
offsetmountingfeatureisparticularlyvaluablefor
tillingunderoverhangingbrancheswithout"barking"
thetreeswiththetractor.
Several
passes
withthetillerundernuttrees,justprior
toharvesting,willprovidea smoothandcleansurface
for
easiest
harvesting....thenutscanbeeasilysweptor
rakedupwithouthavingtodragthroughweedsor
grass.
LANDSCAPING
Using
therotarytillerforlandscapingpurposesinvolves
tillingthesoiltoa veryfinetexturetoallowlevelingor
removaltoanotherarea.Several
passes
areusuallyre-
quiredforthisoperation,particularlyiftheoldlawnor
fieldiswellcompactedandthreadedwitha denseroot
structure.
The
CASE
J-72tilleristrulya remarkabletoolwith
versatilitylimitedonlybytheingenuityoftheoperator.
Alltillingfunctionscanbeenhancedbyexercisingrea-
sonable
carewhentillingintoughorrocky
soils,
and
reasonable
careinmaintainingtheattachmentwhennot
inuse.Removinglarge
rocks,
bottlesand
sticks
from
thetillingarea,andmowingorburningof
excessive
vegetationwillgreatlysimplifythetillers
tasks....simi-
larlypaintingbaremetalareaswillgreatlylengthenthe
tillerlifewheninstorage.

DRIVE
DEPTH
ADJUSTMENT
The
tillertinerotationmaybestartedandstopped
with
anengagingleveronthetillerindependentoftravel
speed.
With
theengagingleverrearward(behindthestop)the
tillerdriveisdisengaged.
With
theleverforward,thetiller
is
engaged.SeeFigure4.
The
tillerisraisedandloweredbythehand
lift
leveron
themountingbracket.A counterbalancespringispro-
videdtoreducetheamountof
lifting
effort
required.
One
notchisprovidedonthe
lift
leverquadrantfor
full
lift.
Eightnotchesareprovidedonthelowerendofthe
quadranttoprovideeightpracticalworkingdepths.
RETARDING
CHISEL
A
retarding
chisel
isincluded
with
thetillerformount-
ingbehindthechain
case.
This
chisel
aidsintractor
speed
controlforsometillingconditions.Byinstalling
this
chisel
angledaheadandslightlyabovethecutting
levelofthetillertines,itwillhelptopreventthetiller
from
drivingthetractortoofast,anditwillalsobreak
uptheridgeunderthechain
case
{Reference"D",

chisel
canalsobeusedforlimitingtillage
depthbysettingitunderthetinecuttingleveland
anglingittotherear(Reference"E").Thereis
little
needforthe
chisel
whenusingthetillerfornormal
tilling,weedcontrolandaeration.
DRAG
SHIELD
The
dragshieldinitsnormalposition
serves
asanaddi-
tionalmeansforbreakingupthesoiltoa finer,uniform
texture.Thetrailingserrationsevenoutthetilledsoilto
leave
a smoothsurface,readyforlawnseedingorgarden
planting.Theshieldiseasilyremovablefortillingin
paddies,
forroughtillingoraeratingasyouprefer.Refer
totheassemblysectionofthismanualforthecorrectdrag
shield
removalandreplacementprocedure.
TINES
This
tillerisassembledatthefactory
with
preciseplace-
mentofeachtinetoachieveproperradialtimingand
overlappingofcuttingpaths.Tinetimingandover-
lappingarecriticalingredientstooptimumtillerproduc-
tion
andsmoothoperation,therefore,removingindivid-
ualtinebladesisnotrecommendedexceptforreplace-
ment.

thetillerathighengineRPMtoprovidehighhorsepower
and
adequateenginecooling.Luggingtheenginedown
tolowRPMresultsininadequatecoolingandadditional
loss
ofhorsepowerthrough
excessive
internalheat.High
engine
RPM
also
provideshightine
speeds
formost
effictivetilting.
For
mosttillingconditions,creepergearshouldbe
used.
Under
toughtillingconditions,bestresultswillbeob-
tainedbyallowingthetillertomakeinitialsurfacepene-
trationtoa shallowdepthonthefirst
pass,
thenincrease
tillingdepthwith
successive
passes
untildesireddepthis
reached.

1.Removetractorclutchingandtillerprimarybelt
guards.
2.
Removeprimarydrivebelt.
3.Removeuppermountingbolts.
4.
Loosen
lowermountingbolts.
5.Slidetiller
from
lowermountingboltsandletrest
onground.
6.Removelowermountingbolts.
7.Reinstallbeltguards.
8.Reinstalltractortowbracket.
Reinstallation
TractorProcedure:
1.Removetractortowbracket.
2.
Removetillerprimarybeltguard.
3.Carefullybacktractoruptotilleraligningmounting
holes.
4.Startlowermountingbolts.
5.Sliplower
slots
onmountingbracketsoverlower
bolts.
6.Pullforwardon
lift
handletopivotmounting
bracket
onlowerboltstolineupupper
holes.
Install
upperboltsand
tighten
allfour.
7.Removetractorclutchingbeltguard.
8.Installprimarydrivebeltandadjustkeeperif
necessary.
To
adjustkeeper:
a.
loosen(donotremove)thekeepermounting
bolt.
b.putthetillerdrivebeltinthe"Drive"position.
c.
adjustthekeeperheightto1/8"(3mm)above
thetillerdrivebelt.Besuretomaintainclear-
ance
with
thetractordriveclutchingbeltinthe
fullyengagedposition.
d.
tighten
thekeepermountingbolt.
9.
Check
beltalignment.Ifalignmentisnotperfect,
shim
theidler
with
commonwashersormovethe
drivensheaveonitsshafttocorrect.
