Ifyourmotherboardhasalreadybeeninstalledinyourcomputeryoumaystillneedto
refertothischapterifyouplantoupgradeyoursystem'shardware.
Thismotherboardis
electrostaticsensitive.Donottouchwithout
wearingpropersafetygadgetand makesure todisconnectthepower
cablefromthepowersource before performinganyworkonyour
motherboard. Notdoingsomayresultinelectricalshock!
2-1InstallingaCPUProcessorforSocket478
TheIntel®Socket478,designedforthePentium4processor,hasbeenincorporatedasa
standardmotherboardspecification. ToinsertyourCPUintoSocket478pleasefollowthe
stepsbellow:
1.Locatethe478-pinCPUsocketonthemotherboard.
2.Unlockthesocketbypressingtheleaversideways,and thenopenitup toa90-degree
angle.
3.LocateaGoldMarkon thetopsurfaceoftheCPU,whichisclosetooneoftheCPU
corners.Thesamecornerwillalsobecutoff,leaving anoticeablenotchintheCPU's
corner. ThesemarkingsindicatePin1ontheCPU.
4.GentlyinserttheCPUwithGoldMark/Pin1atthesamecornerofSocket478,whichis
locatedclosetotheendofthelever.AllowtheweightoftheCPUtopushitselfinto
place. DonotapplyextrapressureasdoingsomayresultindamagingyourCPU.
5.WhentheCPUiscorrectlyinserted,closetheleaverwithyourfingerontooftheCPU
tomakesuretheCPUisproperlyembeddedintothesocket.
6.Insertanappropriateheatsinkand fanforproperHeatdispatch.
InstallingastandardIntel®specified
heatsinkwithcoolingfanis
necessaryforproperheatdissipationfromyourCPU.Failingtoinstall
theseitemsmay resultinoverheatingand possibleburnoutofyourCPU.

TheDDRDRAMmemorysystemconsistsoftwobanksandcansupportthememory
size up to1GBperDIMM. Ifyouonlyuseonebankitdoesnotmatterwhichoneyou
useandifyouusetwoormorebanks,itdoesnotmatterwhichbankyouinstall first.

Thepowercordleading fromthesystem'spowersupplytothe
externalpowersource mustbetheverylastpartconnectedwhen
assembling asystem. TheATXpowersupplyprovidesasingle20-pin
connectorinterface,whichincorporatesstandard+/-5V,+/-12V,
optional3.3VandSoft-powersignals.TheSoftpowersignal,a5V
tricklesupplyiscontinuouslysuppliedwhenACpowerisavailable.
WhenthesystemisintheSoft-Off mode,thistricklesupply
maintainsthesysteminitsminimumpowerstate.
TheATX12Vpowersupplyhasanew+12V(4-pin)and
+5V/3.3V(6-pin)auxiliarypowerconnector.Toenablethe
deliveryofmore+12 VDCand+5/3.3VVDCcurrenttothe
motherboard.
Power-OnByModem
WhileinSoft-Offstate,ifanexternalmodemring-up signaloccurs, thesystemwakesup
andcanberemotelyaccessed.YoumayenablethisfunctioninBIOS'sPower
ManagementSetup menu. (See section 3. 5)
BlinkingLEDinSuspend Mode
WhileinSuspendmode,theLEDlightonthefrontpanelofyourcomputerwillflash.
Suspendmodeisenteredbypressing theOverridePowerButton,pushingtheGreen
buttononyourATXcase, orenabling thePowerManagementandSuspendModeoptions
inBIOS'sPowerManagementmenu. (See section 3.5)
Poly-fuseOverCurrentProtection
Thepoly-fuseprotectsthesystemfromdangerousvoltagesthatthesystemmightbe
exposedtoviathekeyboardorUSBconnector.Incaseofsuchexposure,thepoly-fuse
willimmediatelybedisconnectedfromthecircuit,justlikeanormalfuse.Afterbeing
disconnectedforacertainperiodoftime,thepoly-fusewillreturntoitsnormalstate.
ThenthekeyboardorUSBconnectorcanfunctionproperlyagain.Unlikeconventional
fuses,thepoly-fusedoesnothavetobereplaced,relieving theuserwastedtimeand
inconvenience.

1. PWR-SW (Over-ridePowerButtonConnector)
Thepowerbutton ontheATXchassiscanbeusedasanormalpower
switchaswellasadevicetoactivateAdvancedPowerManagement
Suspendmode.Thismodeisusedforsavingelectricitywhenthe
computerisnotinuseforlongperiodsoftime.TheSoft-OFF by
PWR-BTTNfunctioninBIOS'sPowerManagementSetup menu must
besetto[Delay4Sec.]toactivatethisfunction.
WhentheSoft-OFF byPWR-BTTNfunctionisenabled,pushing the
powerbuttonrapidlywillswitchthesystemtoSuspendmode.Anyoccurrenceof
externalactivitiessuchaspressingakeyonthekeyboardormovingthemousewill
bringthesystembacktoFull-On.Pushing thebuttonwhileinFull-Onmodeformore
than[4seconds]willswitchthesystemcompletelyoff.SeeOver-ridePowerButton

2. P-LED (PowerLEDConnector)
ThepowerindicatorLEDshowsthesystem'spowerstatus.Itisimportanttopay
attentiontothecorrectcablesandpinorientation(i.e., nottoreversetheorderofthese
twoconnectors.)
3. G-BTN/G-LED (GreenButtonSwitch/LEDConnector)
SomeATXcasesprovideaGreenbuttonswitch,whichisusedtoputthesystemin

Suspendmode.InSuspendmode,thepowersupplytothesystemisreducedtoatrickle,
theCPUclockisstopped,and theCPUcoreisinitsminimumpowerstate.Thesystem
iswokenup wheneverthekeyboardormouseistouched.Thesystemresumesin
differentwaysasdefinedbyPowerManagementSetup screeninBIOS.
4. RESET (SystemResetSwitchConnector)
Thisconnectorshouldbeconnectedtotheresetswitchon thefrontpanelofthesystem
case.Theresetswitchallowsyoutorestartthesystemwithoutturningthepoweroff.

Phoenix-AwardBIOSROMhasabuilt-insetup programthatallowsuserstomodifythe
basicsystemconfiguration.ThisinformationisstoredinCMOSRAMsothatitcan
retainthesetup information, evenwhenthepoweristurnedoff.
Toenterthe Phoenix-AwardBIOS setup programpress the[Deletekey]whenyou
Poweron or reboot thecomputersystem. TheprimaryscreenasshowninFigure3-1isa
listofthemenusandfunctionsavailableinthesetup program.Selectthedesireditemby
yourarrowkeysandpress entertomakethechanges.Operatingcommandsarelocatedat
thebottomofthisandall otherBIOSscreens.Whenafieldishighlighted,on-linehelp
informationisdisplayedontherightsideofthescreen.

TheStandardCMOSSetup allowsuserstoconfiguresystemcomponentssuchashard
diskdrive,floppydiskdriveandvideodisplayaswell asdate,timeandboot-uperror
signaling.Thisconfigurationmenushouldbechangedwheninstalling amotherboardfor
thefirsttime,changing hardwareinyoursystemsuchastheHDD,FDD,videodisplay,
orwhentheCMOSdatahasbeenlostorcontaminated.ChoosetheStandardCMOS
Setup optionfromtheCMOSSetup Utilitymenu(Figure3-1)todisplaythefollowing
screen.

Setthedateandtimeofthesystem.Donotskipthisfunctionasall ofyourtimedevents
suchaspowermanagement, saving files, etcarebasedonthistimer.

Selectthetypeofvideoadapterpresentinyoursystem.Youcanignorethissettingifyou
areusingaVGAmonitor;VGABIOSwillautomaticallyconfigurethissetting.
HaltOn
Whenthesystemispoweredon,BIOSperformsaseriesofdiagnostictestscalledPOST
(PowerOnSelfTest). ThisfunctionstopsthecomputerifBIOSdetectsahardwareerror.
Youcantell BIOStohaltonallerrors, noerrors,ornottohaltonspecificerrors.

BychoosingtheAdvancedBIOSFeaturesoptionfromtheCMOSSetupUtilitymenu
(Figure3-1),thescreenbelowisdisplayed.Thissamplescreencontainsthe

Anti-VirusProtection
Whenyousetasenabled,youreceiveawarningmessageifaprogram(specifically,a
virus)attemptstowritetothebootsectororthepartitiontableoftheharddiskdrive.
Manydiskdiagnosticprogramsthataccess thebootsectortablecantriggerthe
virus-
warningmessage. Ifyouplantorunsuchaprogram, werecommend that
youfirstdisabletheviruswarning.
CPUL1&L2Cache
CachememoryismuchfasterthanconventionalDRAMsystemmemory.Thesefields
allowyoutoenableordisabletheCPUsLevel1built-incacheandLevel2external
cache.Bothsettingsareleftenabledtosignificantlyincreasetheperformance ofyour
computer.
CPUL2CacheECC Checking
EnablethisfunctionfortheCPUL2CacheErrorChecking andCorrecting(ECC)
operation.
QuickPowerOnSelfTest
Enablethisfunctiontoreduce theamountoftimerequiredtorunthePOST(PowerOn
SelfTest).BIOSwill savetimebyskipping someitemsduring POST.Itisrecommended
thatyoudisablethissetting.Discovering aproblemduringbootup isbetterthanloosing
dataduringyourwork.

Whenenabled,youcansetthefollowingtwo-typematiccontrolitems.Whendisabled,
thekeyboardcontrollerdetermineskeystrokesarbitrarilyinyoursystem.
