TerraMiner User Guide 1

Introduction
Thank you for purchasing a TerraMiner, the highest-performing dedicated Bitcoin mining hardware
available on the market today.
These instructions will explain how to set up and configure the TerraMiner, however if you have any
technical support questions you may get in touch with us at support@cointerra.com or call us at
+1 (512) 270-6050 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm Central Time) and include your CoinTerra Order ID.
Please retain the packaging in which the TerraMiner shipped. Should you need
to return your TerraMiner to CoinTerra for servicing or repair you will be
required to ship the unit in the original packaging.
Operating Environment & Safety Warnings
Situate and operate the TerraMiner in a cool, dry environment, away from radiators or other heat
sources. Extremes in temperature will affect the TerraMiner’s performance and may cause irreparable
damage to the unit. The TerraMiner should not be used near water or excessive moisture. The
TerraMiner is designed to operate at a room temperature between 5° C and 35° C (41° F-95° F) and up to
4000 ft. above sea level.
Leave enough clearance at both the front and rear of the TerraMiner to allow proper ventilation and
ensure that all fan grills are unobstructed.
To help maintain proper system operation, check regularly that all fan grills are free from potential
blockages (such as dust or pet hair) that may affect the unit’s cooling efficiency. Any restrictions to
airflow can result in damage to the TerraMiner. The TerraMiner should be turned off and both power
cables disconnected from the power supplies before cleaning. Use a cloth to clear the vents at the front
and back of the TerraMiner of any dust or material that has collected there.
Do not insert objects, fingers or other body parts into any fan grill or vent in the TerraMiner, this can be
hazardous and may result in an electrical shock and/or fire and may damage the unit.
To protect the TerraMiner from damage in case of changes in the electrical power supply, the use of a
surge protector or uninterruptible power supply (UPS) rated for at least 15 amps per TerraMiner power
supply (i.e. 2 x 15 amps or 1 x 30 amps) is recommended. The socket outlet shall be installed near the
equipment and shall be easily accessible.
In the event of an electrical storm the TerraMiner should be disconnected to protect it from damage.
The TerraMiner is designed to operate in a horizontal position, either on a desk or rack-mounted.
Operation in any other position is not recommended. Never rest the TerraMiner on its back plane facing
upwards as this may damage the rear of the unit.
The TerraMiner is a self-contained device with no user-serviceable parts inside. Opening the
TerraMiner’s case will void the product warranty.

Connecting the TerraMiner
Network
Before powering up the TerraMiner it should be connected to a permanent broadband Internet
connection by plugging it into a network router or switch using a standard CAT5e network cable. The use
of wireless or cellular connections is not recommended. The TerraMiner should always be properly
secured on the network; please see the Security Advisories section for details.
Power
The TerraMiner incorporates dual power supplies which each operate at 110-240VAC, 50-60Hz
12-5 Amps. Depending on the location’s operating voltage and the circuits’ amperage capacity, each
power supply may need to be connected to a separate circuit. The approximate amperage required for
each power supply can be calculated by dividing the peak wattage by the voltage (for example
1300W ÷ 120V = 11 amps per supply in the USA, or 1300W ÷ 230V = 5.7 amps in Europe.)
Do not connect the TerraMiner to power extension cords, power strips, multi-
outlet adapters or other power connections that are not rated to deliver at least
15 amps (20 amps recommended) per power supply.
The labels on the side or rear of the TerraMiner’s chassis indicate the order in which the power supplies
should be connected:
To boot up the TerraMiner:
Connect both power cords within 3 seconds of each other in the designated order (if they are not
both powered up within this time it is possible that the controller card will not recognize both
GoldStrike boards inside the TerraMiner.)
After a few seconds, the CTR1 LED on the front of the TerraMiner should first turn orange.
When the system has completed booting, the CTR1 LED will turn green to indicate that the
TerraMiner is operational, or red if there is a network connectivity issue (such as a disconnected
network cable.)
TerraMiner User Guide 4

Finding the TerraMiner IP Address
By default, the TerraMiner will be automatically assigned an IP address on your network using DHCP.
You will need to determine the TerraMiner’s IP address so that it can be access from your web browser
and configured.
Network Router
If you have admin access to your network router you can log into its web control panel and view the list
of attached devices in order to obtain the IP address of the TerraMiner on the network. The TerraMiner
will be identified with device name followed by its on-board controller ID, for example:
If you have difficulty accessing your router’s admin panel you may be able to log in via a default admin
password, a list of which can be found at http://www.routerpasswords.com
It may be possible to perform a factory restore on the router in order to reset it to the default password
(refer to the router’s User Guide for instructions.) Please note that this will completely reset the router’s
configuration and all stored settings will be cleared.
Network Sniffing Tools
If you cannot access the router’s admin panel you can obtain the TerraMiner’s IP address by installing
and running one of the following tools to list devices on the network:
Wireshark (Windows, Mac) http://www.wireshark.org/download.html
AngryIP Scanner (Windows, Mac, Linux) http://angryip.org/w/Download
Advanced IP Scanner (Windows) http://www.advanced-ip-scanner.com
Network Miner (Windows, Mac, Linux) http://www.netresec.com/?download=NetworkMiner
Fing (Windows, Mac, Linux) http://www.overlooksoft.com/download
IP Scanner (Mac) https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ip-scanner/id404167149
TerraMiner User Guide 5

Entering the TerraMiner IP Address
Once you have identified the IP address, open a web browser on a device connected to the same
network and enter the TerraMiner’s IP address in the URL address bar.
When prompted for login credentials, the username is admin and the password should be left blank.
You may use either a HTTP or HTTPS connection to connect with the TerraMiner. If you use HTTPS, you
may be given a warning that your browser does not recognize the TerraMiner’s security certificate. You
should click on Proceed Anyway or Continue.
Updating the TerraMiner to the Latest Firmware
The first thing you should do is to download and install the very latest TerraMiner firmware from the
CoinTerra website. Please refer to the System Upgrade section of this user guide for instructions.
TerraMiner User Guide 6

Configuring the TerraMiner
The TerraMiner’s control panel is split into four screens: Status, Network, Configuration and Advanced.
Status Screen
The Status screen displays the current operational status of the TerraMiner. The top section of the
screen indicates the total values for the TerraMiner followed by the individual values for each GoldStrike
board, designated as CTA0 and CTA1.
The values indicated are:
Hash Rate The average hash rate of the TerraMiner since CGMiner was last restarted. It
can take 12 hours for this value to stabilize and show a representative indication
of the true hash rate.
Accepted The number of weighted accepted shares (normalized to difficulty 1.)
Rejected The number of weighted rejected shares (normalized to difficulty 1.) Because of
the normalization, a single rejected share can contribute a large number of
weighted rejected shares.
Errors The number of hardware errors reported. This number is not of concern unless
it is consistently more than 1% of the total number of weighted accepted
shares.
TerraMiner User Guide 7

Below this section is Metrics, which shows the High, Low and Average values for the GoldStrike boards.
All temperatures are in degrees Celsius.
Core Temp 1 (⁰C) The temperature of the first GoldStrike ASIC on the board.
Core Temp 2 (⁰C) The temperature of the second GoldStrike ASIC on the board.
Ambient Temp (⁰C) The temperature recorded at board level.
Fan Speed (RPM) The average speed of the fans connected to the board.
Pump Speed (RPM) The speed of the liquid cooling pump.
TerraMiner User Guide 8

Network Screen
The Network screen defaults to DHCP enabled, which will cause the network router to select a free IP
address on the internal network.
However, if you wish to set a static IP address or modify the subnet, gateway or DNS settings you can
uncheck the DHCP check box and configure the TerraMiner with your own network settings.
The IP address and other settings listed above are examples only. The settings
for your own system will be unique to your network installation.
TerraMiner User Guide 9

Configuration Screen
The Configuration screen is divided into three main sections: CGMiner Configuration, System
Configuration and Web Panel Configuration.
CGMiner Configuration
This section allows you to configure the Pool Settings, Pool Strategy, and perform Advanced operations.
Pool Settings
URL This is the URL address of the mining pool.
Worker Name If you are using an open pool (such as Eligius), enter your wallet address as the worker
name. If you are using a pool requiring registration, enter the worker name(s) created
on the pool’s website.
The Bitcoin worker name in the screenshot above is for example purposes only.
It is a live wallet for Sean’s Outpost (http://seansoutpost.com), a charity
supported by the Bitcoin community. Please be aware that any Bitcoins mined
using this wallet address will be automatically sent to Sean’s Outpost.
Password If you are using an open pool (such as Eligius), do not enter a password. If you are using
a pool requiring registration, enter the worker name password(s) here.
Priority This setting dictates the priority when using the Failover pool strategy (see below.)
Quota This setting dictates the quota setting for the Load Balance pool strategy (see below.)
Actions You can Add additional pools, and Edit or Remove an existing pool entry by clicking on
the associated buttons.
Once you have added or modified a pool setting, restart CGMiner (see Restart CGMiner option below)
and the TerraMiner should begin mining a few seconds after CGMiner has restarted.
TerraMiner User Guide 10

Pool Strategy
A number of different multi-pool modes are available from this drop-down menu. Each has their
advantages and disadvantages:
Failover
The default strategy is Failover. This means that if you input a number of mining pools, CGMiner will
try to use them as a priority list, moving from the 1st to the 2nd, the 2nd to the 3rd and so on. If any of
the earlier pools recover, CGMiner will move back to the higher priority pools.
Round Robin
This strategy only moves from one pool onto the next when the current one falls idle. When in
Round Robin mode, CGMiner makes no attempt to move for any other reason.
Load Balance
This strategy sends work to all the pools on a quota basis. By default, all pools are allocated equal
quotas unless specified otherwise. This apportioning of work is based on work handed out, not
shares returned so it is independent of difficulty targets or rejected shares. While a pool is disabled
or dead, its quota is dropped until it is re-enabled. Quotas are forward looking, so if the quota is
changed on the fly it only affects future work. If all pools are set to zero quota or all pools with
quota are dead, CGMiner will revert to a Failover mode.
Balance
This strategy monitors the amount of difficulty 1 shares solved for each pool and CGMiner uses it to
try to process the same amount of work for all pools.
TerraMiner User Guide 11

Advanced
The Advanced subsection of Configuration allows you to import and export your CGMiner configuration
file (which includes the pool list), reset CGMiner configuration, save a diagnostic report, restart
CGMiner, disable/enable remote SSH access, identify your TerraMiner, and restart the system.
If you have previously saved a copy of your CGMiner configuration you can load it back by clicking on the
Import Configuration File option and selecting the saved file. This is useful after a Factory Restore.
To save your CGMiner configuration you can click on Export Configuration File and save it to your
computer. If you do this before you perform a Factory Restore you will be able to reload your
pool/worker/wallet information afterwards.
To reset all of the settings of CGMiner to their defaults, click Reset CGMiner Configuration.
When contacting CoinTerra with a technical issue you may be asked to provide diagnostic information
which can help in the troubleshooting process. Click the Diagnostic Report button to save the
TerraMiner’s log files to your computer (the filename has a .gz file extension) and then attach the file to
your email to CoinTerra technical support.
The Restart CGMiner option will restart the system software without physically rebooting the
TerraMiner. It will take a few seconds to do so and all the live Status statistics will be reset.
The ability to access the TerraMiner via SSH is enabled by default (see Advanced Features for more
details.) If you Disable Remote SSH Access it will prevent another user on the network from accessing
the TerraMiner via SSH.
TerraMiner User Guide 12

It is strongly recommended that SSH access is disabled unless you login through
SSH and change the SSH root password to a unique password. See the Security
Advisories section of this user guide for further information.
If you have more than one TerraMiner, click the Identify On option and the CTR1 LED will blink green in
order to help you identify which device you are configuring. Click Identify Off to stop the blinking.
The Restart System option will physically reboot the TerraMiner.
System Configuration
The System Configuration section contains the Power Stepping and System Upgrade options.
Power Stepping
The Power Stepping drop-down menu allows the amount of power used by the TerraMiner to be
reduced in order to debug power-related issues.
By default the TerraMiner operates at power step 9 (highest), but if you are experiencing power draw
that is too high for your location (i.e. the TerraMiner is tripping a circuit breaker) you can reduce the
power stepping in order to determine a power step which is suitable for your location. This can be useful
if you are temporarily unable to connect the TerraMiner to two separate power circuits (e.g. if you do
not have sufficient amperage available on a single power circuit and do not have a suitable power
extension cord with which to connect the TerraMiner to two separate circuits.)
If you are experiencing power circuit overload, select power step 1 (lowest) and allow the TerraMiner to
operate at the lower power setting for a couple of minutes. Increase the power step setting until you are
unable to further increase the power step without tripping the circuit breaker(s).
Reducing the power step from the highest setting also reduces hashing
performance accordingly and is intended as a temporary measure until the
TerraMiner can be connected to appropriate power circuits.
TerraMiner User Guide 13

System Upgrade
The System Upgrade option allows the TerraMiner’s firmware to be upgraded. Download the latest
firmware file from the Support section of the CoinTerra website to a location on your computer. Do not
extract the .tgz firmware file once downloaded. Mac users should ⌘-Click (Command-Click) and select
Download Linked File As… to save the firmware file without automatically extracting it.
You can verify the integrity of the file by comparing its MD5 checksum with the checksum listed on the
firmware download page with an MD5 utility on your computer or online at http://md5online.info. If the
checksum does not successfully verify, re-download the firmware from the website and verify it again.
Do not install a firmware download if its MD5 checksum does not validate
correctly and never install any firmware obtained from a source other than the
CoinTerra website.
Click on the System Upgrade button and navigate to the location where you downloaded the firmware.
Select the firmware file to start the upgrade process. When the firmware has been upgraded the
TerraMiner will automatically restart after one minute.
Do not disconnect the TerraMiner from the power source while the firmware
upgrade is in process. Doing so may render the TerraMiner inoperable. If power
is lost during a firmware upgrade, it may be possible to recover it with a factory
restore (see the Factory Restore section of this user guide.)
Web Panel Configuration
The Web Panel Configuration section is where the Admin Password is set. Choose a password and click
on Apply. To clear the password, click on Apply with no password in the text field.
If you lose the password, you can perform a factory restore in order to regain access to the TerraMiner’s
control panel (see the Factory Restore section for instructions.)
TerraMiner User Guide 14

Advanced Screen
The Advanced screen displays four sections of detailed CGMiner statistics divided into four categories:
Summary, Devices, Pools and Stats. If you contact CoinTerra technical support with an issue you may be
required to share some or all of this information in order to aid the troubleshooting process.
Rebooting the TerraMiner
To reboot the TerraMiner, briefly press and release the Reset button recessed in the hole on the front
panel with a pin or similar object. The CTR1 LED will turn orange to indicate that the reboot request has
been accepted and then all the LEDs will turn off. After two seconds the reboot process will begin.
Factory Restore
You may need to restore the TerraMiner to factory settings for reasons such as losing the Admin
password or after unsuccessfully flashing a newly downloaded firmware. The Factory Restore option
rolls the system back by removing persistent configuration settings such as passwords, CGMiner
configuration and SSL certifications. The currently installed firmware will be retained unless the system
fails to boot, in which case the original factory firmware will be reloaded.
To reset the miner to its default configuration:
Press and hold the Reset button recessed in the hole on the front panel with a pin or similar object
After two seconds the CTR1 LED will turn red, indicating that the button should be released
When the button has been released, the CTR1 LED will blink red while the settings are cleared, after
which the system will restart
If the button is released before two seconds have elapsed, the CTR1 LED will turn orange and the
system will restart without clearing the settings
After clearing the settings it will be necessary to manually reconfigure the system, or by using the
Import Configuration File option to restore a previously saved configuration.
If you press and hold the Reset button for more than 8 seconds the controller
card will shut down but the TerraMiner will continue to operate, although it will
stop mining after a few seconds. If you do this, power down the TerraMiner by
disconnecting both power cords before powering up again.
TerraMiner User Guide 15

Powering Down the TerraMiner
Disconnect the power cords from the back of the device, or switch off the power at the wall outlet if you
have switched outlets. The TerraMiner should be located near the power outlets. To disconnect the
TerraMiner, always disconnect both power supply cords.
Do not power down the TerraMiner while a firmware update or Factory Restore
is in progress.
Security Advisories
Network
Please be aware that if the TerraMiner is exposed on a network (either LAN or Internet) which is
accessible to other users and devices it may be possible for the TerraMiner to be identified and accessed
on the network. Always ensure that the network is adequately protected (i.e. the TerraMiner is secured
behind a firewall), and that an Admin password is set (see the Web Panel Configuration instructions.) If
the network router has a DMZ feature, it is strongly recommended that you do not put the TerraMiner
in the DMZ device list.
If the TerraMiner is hosted at a data center or other remote location please
ensure that it has been properly protected and its IP address is not exposed on
the open Internet. You may need to request this option from your provider.
Physical
Please be aware that if the TerraMiner is located in a place where it could be physically accessed by
others, it is possible for the TerraMiner to be restored to factory default settings (see the Factory
Restore instructions) and new login, mining and network information could be entered. Please ensure
that the TerraMiner is kept in a secure location if this is of concern.
