I. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
A. Observe the following
precautionary procedures before
and whenever using the
Coltolux®
LED
Curing Light:
CAUTION: Before connecting,
read all instructions.
CAUTION: Light output
from this unit, potentially
over 1000 mW/cm2, may be a
significant increase compared
to other polymerization devices;
therefore, when using this
curing light:
• Determine curing time of your
material using the enclosed
test block.
• Adjust curing techniques in
accordance with the increased
energy.
WARNING: Do not substitute
the light lens from other curing
lights. Use only the light lens
supplied for this unit. Never use
components not designed for use
with this device since this may
impair performance. Do not
refrigerate or put in freezer
to cool.
CAUTION: Persons having
a history of photosensitive
reactions or who are using
photosensitizing drugs should
not be exposed to light from
this unit.
B. All high intensity lights may cause
retinal damage with prolonged
exposure to the eyes, therefore
we urge you observe these
cautionary statements:
CAUTION: Never look directly
into the light emitted from the
light lens or reflected from tooth
or other surfaces.
• Always use light shields (Cat.
No. C7944) available for light
curing or use eye protection
goggles (Cat. No. C7988) that
block light in the blue spectral
range. Sunglasses are not
adequate protection.
• Before each use, inspect the light
lens
(Section VIII)
.
• Patients, operators and dental
technicians should always use
proper eye protection.
CAUTION: The red indicator light
on the charger indicates a warning
that the battery may not have
sufficient charge for proper curing
operation and that action
must be
taken to charge the battery.
II.
UNPACKING
• Before unpacking, examine the
carton for external damage, and
if severe, contact your
shipper/carrier.
• Open carton and carefully
remove the unit and accessories.
Make sure supply voltage is
within the range specified on the
power supply
(Fig. 3)
. If not, do
not operate this unit; contact your

III. SET-UP AND ASSEMBLY
• Coltolux®
LED
is designed as a
cordless handpiece unit with a
separate charger base. Place the
charger base on a smooth flat
surface in an area that is dry and
free of dust, is convenient and has
an outlet within easy reach of the
supplied power cord. Export units
include additional plug adapters.
Install the appropriate plug adapter
onto the power supply
(Fig. 2).
To
change the plug adapter, remove
screw, slide existing plug adapter out
of power pack and replace with
desired plug adapter, insert screw
and tighten securely
(Fig. 6).
Plug
the power cord into the wall outlet
and then into the charger base.A
green light on the charger base
indicates power is available to
charge the handpiece.
• Insert the handpiece into the
charger base. When the handpiece
is being charged, the light on the
charger base will be red. When the
handpiece is fully charged and
ready, the red light on the charger
base will turn green.
The initial charging of the hand-
piece will require approximately
3 hours to fully charge.
• When the handpiece is removed
from the charger base the small
light above the On/Off button on
Owner’s Guide Page 3
86768C Coltolux LED OG 7x8_Intl.qxd 12/1/04 11:11 AM Page 3

the handpiece will be green,
indicating the unit is ready for use.
If the light does not light up green,
see Section VI Troubleshooting.
CAUTION: Never modify the
power cord.
WARNING: Explosion hazard. Do
not use in the presence of
flammable anaesthetics.
IV. FUNCTION CHECK
A. Activate/Deactivate Light
Depressing the On/Off button on
the handpiece activates or
deactivates the curing light
(Fig. 4)
. Do not hold the button
continuously throughout the
curing cycle. During operation an
audible beep will be emitted every
10 seconds. The unit shuts off
automatically after 60 seconds.
B. Measuring the Light’s
Effectiveness
To ensure complete
polymerization at all times, it is
critical to periodically test the light
intensity output.
IMPORTANT: Test the Coltolux®
LED
Curing Light before first use, and at
least once every other week
thereafter (depending on usage)
using a light meter and/or the
provided test block.
1. Enter your readings on the “Meter
Reading Chart” at the end of this
Owner’s Guide.
To test the Coltolux®
LED
, use
Coltolux®Light Meter
(sold separately –
Cat. No. C7900WHT).
Push the light shield away from the
tip of the light lens so it does not
interfere with the sensor. To take
the reading, hold the handpiece in
front of the meter
(Fig. 5)
. Place
the light lens on top of the sensor
located on the front of the meter.
Activate the light, and allow ten
(10) seconds for stabilization of
the meter.
IMPORTANT: Place the light lens on
the center of the sensor, and hold
steady while taking the reading.
To take another reading, repeat
the steps outlined above.
2. Meter Display
Areading of 300 mW/cm2 or higher
indicates that the light output is
acceptable for the polymerization of
material up to a 2.0 mm depth.
Follow the dental material
manufacturer’s instructions for
recommended exposure time, and
check using the supplied test block.
A reading below 300 mW/cm2,
or a reduction of intensity of the
light output in comparison to the
original value, indicates that
corrective action should be
taken. (See Section VI, D
Troubleshooting.)
V. CLINICAL APPLICATION
CAUTION: Always test
restorative materials with this
LED light by using the supplied
test block.
A. Polymerization
• Determine the exposure time
in accordance with the dental
material manufacturer’s
instructions or by using the
test block provided.
• Remove the charged handpiece
from the charger base; position
the light shield; slide the barrier
sleeve over the light and light
shield; direct the tip of the light
lens as close to the restorative
material as possible without
touching.
• Activate Coltolux®
LED
with a
momentary push of the button.
Avoid contact with unpolymerized
restorative material, glass
ionomer, liquid resin or bonding
agent because direct contact will
cause these materials to adhere
to the light lens. This will block
the light transmission and result
in improper polymerization.
B. Over-Heating Protection
Coltolux®
LED
is safeguarded
against overheating.
1. A thermal overheat protector will
be activated when the unit is in
continuous operation for longer
than three (3) minutes. The Blue
light output will shut off. The
thermal overheat protector will
automatically reset once the unit
is cooled and ready for use.
Reactivate the Coltolux®
LED
light by a momentary push of
the button.
VI. TROUBLESHOOTING
A. If the light on the charger base
does not illuminate:
• Check to see that the power cord
is securely plugged into the
charger base and the wall outlet.
• Ensure the wall outlet has power
by plugging a lamp into it.
B. If the On/Off button on the
handpiece does not activate the
blue LED curing light and the
green light on the handpiece is
not lit (and handpiece is not in
base):
• The unit may be overheated.
Allow unit to cool and try again.
• The unit may be discharged
and needs charging. Replace
handpiece in the charger base.
If the charger base LED is red,
handpiece is being charged.
If it is not, see “A” above.

C. If the On/Off button on the
handpiece does not activate the
curing light and the green light
above the button is illuminated,
unit requires service. Contact your
dealer or Coltène/Whaledent Inc.
D. If your light registers a reading
below 300 mW/cm2on a light-
meter, take the following steps:
• Check the light lens.
The light lens should be
checked daily. Replace lens with
Coltène/Whaledent Inc. Light Lens
Cat. No. C7974 if material has
cured to the lens.
• If the intensity of the light output
is still under 300 mW/cm2, extend
the curing time according to
the material’s manufacturer
recommendation until the
Coltolux®
LED
light can be
serviced. Contact your dealer or
Coltène/Whaledent Inc. for service.
VII. REPLACING THE
LIGHT LENS
IMPORTANT: The Coltolux®
LED
Light Lens is easily scratched and
