OPERATI NG
Threading the Tape
l. Place areel of tape onthe left hand reel spindle
(26).
2. Place anempty reelon the righthand reelspindle

section taut and insert it in the tape slot. Make
sure the dull-coated side faces the rear of the
recorder.
4. Insert the free end of the tape into one of the
radial slots inthe right hand spindle reel. Turn
the reel several turns counterclockwise to f asten
the tape to the reel and to take up all slaek be-
tween reels.
Microphone Recording
l. Rotate the On-Off-Volume control clocktpise to
turn the recorder on. Allow suJfieient time for
the tubes to warm up.

S. Hold the microphone about 6 to 12 inches from
your mouth and speak in a normal voice.
6. Adjust the volume eontrol until the record indi-
eator just closes on the loudest passages.
NOTL Correct volume level on recording is
very important. Too weak a signal will
result in weak playback and high back-
ground noise. Toostrong asignal willre-
sult in distortion durlng playback.
Recording from Radio, Phonograph, or TV
Connect the patch cord supplied with tJ:e re-
corder as follows:
l. Connect thealligator clips across the voice coil
terminals of the radio, phonograph, or TV.
2. Insert ttre patch cord plug into the "Aux" jack.
3. Proceed as deseribed under "Microphone Re-

Cartridge Recording
l. Magnetic Cartridge:
(a) Connect the output of the cartridgeto a pre-
amplifier.
(b) Connectthe preamplifier outputto the "Aux"
jack of the recorder.
(c) Proceed as deseribed under "Microphone
Recording".
2. Crystal or Ceramic Cartridge:
I N STRUCTI ON S
iack of the recorder.
(b) Proceed as described under "Microphone"
Recording".
Dual-Track Recording
In Dual-Track Recording, only one-half of the
tape width is used in making a recording. After tlte
first recording is completed, remove the full reel of
tape, turn it over and place on the supply spindle.
Thread the tape and proceed with the recording. The
tape can be played back in the same manner.
Reu'lind
To rewind the tape at a rapid speed, turn the
Selector to Revrind.
To Play a Recording
l. Thread the tape as described under "Threading
the Tape".
2. Turn Selector to the PIay position.
3. Adjust thevolume to the desired listening level.
To Erase a Recording
Any recording on the tape is automatically erased
before anew one is made when in the record position.
To erase a recording without putting new material on
t}te tape, follow the normal recording procedure, but
setthe volumecontrol tothe full counterclockwise po-
sition.
Fast Forward
Tape can be advanced rapidly by setting the
Selector in Play position and then pull the "Fast" for-
ward lever toward the front of the reeorder.
Remote Control Switch
The Remote Control Switch plugs into the rear
of the recorder. By setting the Selector in Play posi-
tion, the tape can be started and stopped any time by
depressing the button on the Remote Control Switch.
To Edit and Splice Tape
NOTE: It is impossible to edit and splice one
track of a two-track tape without affecting
the otler. Recordings to be edited should
be limited to one track tapes.
l. Tape maybe edited by cutting outunwanted por-
tions or by joining selection into another se-
quence. Announcements can be inserted be-
tween selections, etc. Unused tape can be
spliced for reuse.
2. For best results, cut tape at a slight diagonal,
butt ends togetier and fasten on the glossy side
with splicing tape. Trim off any excessive width.

3. Tighten the mounting screws.
Drive ldler
I. Fasten a string around the oil cup ofdrive idler
(66).
2. Fasten aspring scale to the string and measure
the force necessary to pull drive idler (66) away
from the motor pulley (?9) and flywheel of cap-
stan (95).
CLEAN ING
The record head, erase head, capstan, pressure
roller, and tape guides should be cleaned occasionally
to remove the tape residue which is worn off the tape
as it passes these parts. Use a soft cloth and alcohol
to remove the residue.
Clean the rubber ti.red idler wheels and belts
with cleaning fluid.
3. A force of I I/ 4 to L b/ I pounds is required.
4. To obtain this force, bend the metal lug that
drive idler tension spring (?4) is fastened to.
Pressure Roller
To vary the pressure of the pressure roller,
pressure roller arm tension spring will have to be
adjusted by varying the gap between the coils of the
spring. The pressure shou.Ld be from 2 5/ B to I 3/ g
pounds.
Takeup Torque
The takeup torque is adjusted by varying f riction
spring (33). It should be adjusted sothe upper limitis
between l. 3 - 2. I oz. inches.
LUBRICATION
AII rotating parts areprovided wi.th oilite bear-
ings and are lubricated before leaving the factory.
Under normal use, no lubrication is required for a
long period of time. When lubrlcation is necessary,
use sewing machine oil sparingly.
When lubricating the flywheel, remove the cap-
stan screw and inject 4 or 5 drops of sewing oil.
