whole-homesafety.AllWireless RadioLinkAlarms
communicatewitheachotherwithoutwiresorconnectors.
When oneAlarmsounds,theyall sound.Thisprovidesyour
familywithan earlierwarning of potentialdanger,and gives
you moretimetoreact.
Thecommunicationdistance(range)betweenanytwo
Wireless RadioLinkAlarmsistypically100feet (30 meters)
insideofahome.Somefeaturesofahome,suchasthe
numberof floors, number/sizeof rooms,furnitureand types
ofbuilding materialsusedmayreducetherangeofthe
Alarms.Examplesinclude:suspendedceilings,ductwork,
largemetallicappliances(refrigerators)andmetalstuds.A
featureofWireless RadioLinkAlarmsisthattheyoperate
asameshnetwork.AllAlarmswill repeatanyalarmsignal
thatisreceivedtoall otherWireless RadioLinkAlarms.
Interferencefromstructuralconditionscan beovercomeby
addingadditionalAlarmstoroutethewireless signalaround
obstructions.
IMPORTANT!
Therangeand properoperationofanywireless device
will varydependingonitssurroundings.It isveryimportant
thateachAlarmistestedindividuallybeforeand after
installationtomakesurethatallAlarmsrespondproperly.
TheWireless RadioLinkAlarmsarenottobeused
outdoorsortotransmitbetweenbuildings.TheAlarmswill
notcommunicateproperlyundertheseconditions.
Metalobjectsandmetallicwallpapermayinterferewith
signalsfromwireless Alarms.Alarmsshouldbetested
afterchangestoyourhomesuchasremodeling,moving
furniture,andwithmetaldoorsopenedand closed.

1. RECOMMENDEDLOCATIONSFORALARMS
Locatethefirstalarmintheimmediateareaofthe
bedrooms.Trytoprotecttheexitpathasthebedroomsare
usuallyfarthestfromtheexit.Ifmorethanonesleeping
areaexists,locateadditionalalarmsineachsleeping area.
Locateadditionalalarmstoprotectanystairwayas
stairwaysactlikechimneys forsmokeandheat.
Locateatleast onealarmoneveryfloorlevel.
Locatean alarmineverybedroom.
Locateanalarmineveryroomwhereelectrical
appliancesareoperated(i.e.portableheatersor
humidifiers).
Locatean alarmineveryroomwheresomeonesleeps
withthedoorclosed.Thecloseddoormaypreventthe
alarmfromwaking thesleeper.
Smoke,heat, and combustionproductsrisetotheceiling
and spreadhorizontally.Mountingthesmokealarmonthe
ceiling inthecenteroftheroomplacesitclosesttoall
pointsintheroom. Ceilingmountingispreferredinordinary
residentialconstruction.
Formobilehomeinstallation,selectlocationscarefullyto
avoidthermalbarriersthatmayformattheceiling.For
moredetails,see MOBILEHOMEINSTALLATIONbelow.
Whenmountingan alarmon theceiling,locateitata
minimumof4”(10 cm)fromthesidewall(see Figure1).
When mountingthealarmonthewall, it isbest tousean
insidewallwiththetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof
4”(10 cm)andamaximumof12”(30.5cm)belowthe
ceiling,(see Figure1).
Putsmokealarmsatbothendsofabedroomhallwayor
largeroomif thehallwayorroomismorethan30 feet(9.1
m)long.
InstallSmokeAlarmson sloped,peakedorcathedral
ceilingsatorwithin3ft(0.9m)ofthehighestpoint
(measuredhorizontally).NFPA72 states: “Smokealarms
inroomswithceiling slopesgreaterthan 1footin8feet
(.3min2.4m)horizontallyshall belocatedonthehighside
oftheroom.”NFPA 72states: “Arowofdetectorsshall be
spacedandlocatedwithin3ft(0.9m)ofthepeakofthe
ceiling measuredhorizontally”(see Figure3).

MOBILEHOMEINSTALLATION
Modernmobilehomeshavebeendesignedand builttobe
energyefficient.Installsmokealarmsasrecommended
above,refertoRECOMMENDEDLOCATIONSandFigure
1.Inoldermobilehomesthatarenotwell insulated
comparedtopresentstandards,extremeheatorcoldcan
betransferredfromtheoutsidetotheinsidethroughpoorly
insulatedwallsand roof. Thismaycreateathermalbarrier
thatcan preventthesmokefromreaching an alarm
mountedontheceiling.Insuchunits,installthesmoke
alarmon aninsidewallwiththetop edgeofthealarmata
minimumof4”(10cm) and amaximumof12”(30.5cm)
belowtheceiling(see Figure1).If you arenotsureabout
theinsulationinyourmobilehome,orifyou noticethatthe
outerwallsandceilingareeitherhotorcold,install the
alarmonaninsidewall.Forminimumprotection,install at
leastonealarmclosetothebedrooms.Foradditional

3. INSTALLATIONINSTRUCTIONS
WIRING REQUIREMENTS
•ThissmokealarmshouldbeinstalledonaU.L.listedor
recognizedjunction box.Allconnectionsshouldbemade
byaqualified electricianandmustconformtoarticle760of
theU.S.NationalElectricalCode,NFPA72 and/orany
othercodeshavingjurisdictioninyourarea.
•Theappropriatepowersourceis120to240VoltA.C.
SinglePhasesupplied fromanon-switchablecircuitwhich
isnotprotectedbyagroundfaultinterrupter.

CAUTION!TURN OFFTHEMAINPOWERTOTHE

•Forunitsthatareusedassinglestation,DONOT
CONNECTTHEWHITE(INTERCONNECT)WIRETO
ANYTHING.Leavethewhitewireinsulatingcapinplaceto
makecertainthatthewhitewirecannotcontactanymetal
partsortheelectricalbox.
•When alarmsareinterconnected,all interconnected units
must bepoweredfromasinglecircuit.
•Amaximumof18 devicesmaybeinterconnectedina
multiplestationarrangement.
TheinterconnectsystemshouldnotexceedtheNFPA
interconnectlimitof12smokealarmsand/or18 alarms
total(smoke,heat,carbonmonoxide,etc.)With18alarms
interconnected,itisstillpossibletointerconnectuptoa
totalof6remotesignalingdevicesand/orrelaymodules.
•Whenmixingmodelswhichhavebatterybackupwith
modelswithoutbatterybackupbeadvisedthatthemodels
withoutbatterybackup willnotrespond duringan AC
powerfailure.
•Themaximumwirerundistancebetweenthefirst and last
unitinan interconnectedsystemis1000feet.
•Figure1illustratesinterconnection wiring.Improper
connectionwillresultindamagetothealarm,failureto
operate, orashockhazard.
•Makecertainalarmsarewiredtoacontinuous
(non-switched)powerline.NOTE:UsestandardULlisted
householdwire(18gaugeorlargerasrequiredbylocal

MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
1.Holdbasefirmlyandtwistthedetectorcounterclockwise
toseparateitfromthebase.
2.Afterselectingthepropersmokealarmlocation as
describedinSection 1and wiringtheA.C.QUICK
CONNECTharnessasdescribed intheWIRING
INSTRUCTIONS,attachthedetectorbasetotheelectrical
box(see Figure2).
3.Useascrewdrivertopunchoutonlythepairofholesin
thebasethatmatchyourtypeofelectricalboxorplaster
ring.Mountthebasetotheelectricalbox,usingthe
appropriateholes.
4.PulltheA.C.QUICKCONNECTORthroughthecenter
holeinthebaseandmountthebase,makingsurethatthe
mounting screwsarepositionedinthesmallendsofthe
keyholesbeforetighteningthescrews(see Figure2).
5.PlugtheA.C.QUICKCONNECTORintothebackofthe
alarm(see Figure3),makingsurethatthelocksonthe
connectorsnap intoplace. Thenpushtheexcess wireback
intotheelectricalboxthroughtheholeinthecenterofthe
base.
6.IfyouhavefinishedalltheWIRING,BATTERY
INSTALLATIONAND BASE MOUNTINGSTEPS,you can
installthealarmon thebase.Alignment marksareprovided

on thesideofthealarmandonthebase(see Figure4).
7.AttachtheSmokeAlarmtothebase. Lineup theguides
on thealarm’sbasewiththeguidesonthebase.When
guidesarelinedup,turnthebaseclockwise(right)until it
snapsintoplace.
8.TurnontheA.C.power.ThegreenA.C.PowerOn
Indicatorshouldbelit whenthealarmisoperatingfromA.C.
power.

Afterinstallation,TESTyouralarmbypressingandholding
thetestbutton forseveralseconds,orbyblowing smoke
intothealarm. Thisshouldsoundthealarm.
CAUTION! Earlywarningfiredetection isbestachievedby
theinstallationoffiredetection equipmentinallroomsand
areasofthehouseholdasfollows:Asmokealarminstalled
ineachseparatesleeping area(inthevicinityof-but
outsideofthebedroom),andheatorsmokealarmsinthe
livingroom,diningroom,kitchen,hallways,attic,furnace
room,closets,utilitystorageroom,basement,and
attachedgarage.
4. OPERATIONAND TESTING
OPERATION:Thesmokealarmisoperating onceA.C.
powerisapplied,freshbatteriesareinstalledandtestingis
complete. Whenthesmokealarm’sphotoelectricchamber
sensesproductsofcombustion,thehornwillsound aloud
(85db)pulsingalarmuntil thesensingchamberiscleared
ofsmokeparticles.
FLASHINGLEDLIGHT:Thissmokealarmisequipped
withaflashing redindicatorLED.TheLEDhasthree
modesofoperation.
StandbyCondition TheredLEDwillflashevery30-40
secondstoindicatethatthesmokealarmisoperating
properly.
AlarmCondition Whenthealarmsensesproductsof
combustionandgoesintoalarm,theredLEDwillflash
rapidly(2-3timespersecond).Therapidflashing LEDand
pulsating alarmwillcontinueuntiltheairiscleared.
LowBatteryCondition TheLEDflashwillbeaccompanied
byanaudiblechirp.Replacethebatterywhenthiscondition
occurs.
SMOKE SENSINGCHAMBEROPERATION:Thisalarm
will “chirp”ifanyofthecomponentsinthesmokesensing
chamberfail.Thischirpwill occurbetweentheflashesof
theredLEDindicatorlight.(Ifthechirpoccursatthesame
timeastheredLEDflash,see Section6forlowbattery
information.)
WHENUNITSAREINTERCONNECTED,onlytheredLED
oftheunitwhichsensesthesmokeorisbeingtested(the
originating unit)willflashrapidly.All otherunitsinthe
interconnect systemwillsound analarmbuttheirredLED’s
will NOTflashrapidly.
TESTING: Testbypushingthetestbuttononthecoverand
holditdownforaminimumof5seconds.Thiswill sound
thealarmifall theelectroniccircuitry,hornandbatteryare
working.Ifno alarmsounds,check thefuseorcircuit
breakersupplyingpowertothealarmcircuit.Ifthealarm
still doesnotsound, theunithasdefectivebatteriesorother
failure.Youcanalsotest thealarmbyblowingsmokeintoit.
TESTTHEALARMWEEKLYTOENSUREPROPER
OPERATION.Erraticorlowsoundcomingfromyouralarm
mayindicateadefectivealarm, andit shouldbereturnedfor
service(see Section 11).
5. NUISANCEALARMS
Smokealarmsaredesigned tominimizenuisancealarms.
Cigarettesmokewillnotnormallysetoff thealarm,unless
thesmokeisblowndirectlyintothealarm.Combustion
particlesfromcookingmaysetoff thealarmifthealarmis
locatedclosetothecookingarea.Largequantitiesof
combustibleparticlesaregeneratedfromspillsorwhen
broiling.Usingthefanonarangehoodwhichventstothe
outside(non-recirculatingtype)will alsohelpremovethese
combustibleproductsfromthekitchen.
Ifthealarmdoessound,check forfiresfirst.Ifafireis
discovered,getout and callthefiredepartment. Ifno fireis
present, check tosee if oneof thereasonslistedinSection
2mayhavecausedthealarm.
6. MAINTENANCE
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
Toreplacethebattery,removethealarmfromthemounting
bracketbyrotatingthealarmcounterclockwise.
Thissmokealarmusesa9Vcarbonzincbackupbattery
(alkalineand lithiumbatteriesmayalsobeused).Afresh
batteryshouldlastforoneyearundernormaloperating
conditions.
Thisalarmhasalow/missingbatterymonitorcircuitwhich
will causethealarmto “chirp”approximatelyevery30-40
secondsforaminimumof seven(7)dayswhenthebattery
getslow.Replacethebatterywhenthisconditionoccurs.

CLEANING YOURALARM
Toclean youralarm,removeitfromthemountingbracket
asoutlinedinthebeginningofthissection.Youcanclean
youralarmbyusingcompressedairoryourvacuum
cleanerhosetobloworsuck airthrough theopenings
aroundtheperimeterof thealarm. Theoutsideof thealarm
can bewipedwithadampcloth.
Aftercleaning,reinstallyouralarm.Testyouralarmby
usingthetestbutton.
7. LIMITATIONSOFSMOKEALARMS
WARNING:
PLEASE READ CAREFULLYAND THOROUGHLY.
Smokealarmsaredevicesthatcanprovideearlywarning
ofpossiblefiresatareasonablecost;however,alarms
havesensinglimitations.Ionizationtypealarmsoffera
broad rangeoffiresensingcapabilitiesbutarebetterat
detecting fastflamingfiresthanslowsmoldering fires.
Photoelectricalarmssensesmolderingfiresbetterthan
flamingfires.Homefiresdevelop indifferentwaysand are
oftenunpredictable.
Neithertypeofalarm(photoelectricorionization)isalways
best, andagivenalarmmaynotalwaysprovidewarningof
afire.
Abatterypoweredalarmmusthaveabatteryofthe
specifiedtype,ingood conditionandinstalledproperly.
A.C.poweredalarmswillnotoperateiftheA.C.power
hasbeencutoff,suchasbyanelectricalfireoranopen
fuse.
Smokealarmsmustbetestedregularlytomakesurethe
batteriesand thealarmcircuitsareingood operating
condition.
Smokealarmscannotprovidean alarmifsmokedoes
notreachthealarm.Therefore,smokealarmsmaynot
sensefiresstarting inchimneys,walls,on roofs,on the
othersideof acloseddoororonadifferentfloor.
Ifthealarmislocatedoutsidethebedroomorona
different floor, it maynot wakeupasoundsleeper.
Theuseof alcoholordrugsmayalsoimpairone’sability
tohearthesmokealarm.Formaximumprotection,a
smokealarmshouldbeinstalledineachsleeping areaon
everylevelofahome.
Althoughsmokealarmscanhelpsavelivesbyproviding
an earlywarning ofafire,theyarenotasubstituteforan
insurancepolicy.Homeownersandrentersshouldhave
adequateinsurancetoprotecttheirlivesandproperty.
8. GOODSAFETYHABITS
DEVELOPANDPRACTICEAPLANOFESCAPE
Makeafloorplanindicatingalldoorsandwindowsandat
leasttwo(2)escaperoutesfromeachroom.Secondstory
windowsmayneedaropeorchainladder.
Haveafamilymeetinganddiscussyourescapeplan,
showingeveryonewhattodoincaseof fire.
Determineaplaceoutsideyourhomewhereyouallcan
meetifafireoccurs.
Familiarizeeveryonewiththesoundofthesmokealarm
and trainthemtoleaveyourhomewhentheyhearit.
Practiceafiredrillatleasteverysixmonths.Practice
allowsyoutotestyourplanbeforeanemergency. You may
notbeabletoreachyourchildren.It isimportanttheyknow
whattodo.
WHATTO DO WHENTHEALARMSOUNDS
Leaveimmediatelybyyourescapeplan.Everysecond
counts,sodon’twastetimegetting dressedorpicking up
valuables.
Inleaving, don’topenanyinsidedoorwithoutfirstfeeling
itssurface.Ifhot, orifyousee smokeseeping through
cracks, don’topenthatdoor!Instead, useyouralternateexit.
Iftheinsideofthedooriscool,placeyourshoulderagainst
it,openitslightlyandbereadytoslamitshutifheatand
smokerushin.
Stayclosetotheflooriftheairissmoky.Breathe
shallowlythroughacloth,wet ifpossible.
Onceoutside,gotoyourselectedmeeting placeand
makesureeveryoneisthere.
Callthefiredepartmentfromyourneighbor’shome-not
fromyours!
Don’t returntoyourhomeuntilthefireofficialssaythat it
isall righttodo so.
Therearesituationswhereasmokealarmmaynotbe
effectivetoprotectagainstfireasstatedintheNFPA
Standard72. Forinstance:
a)smokinginbed
b)leavingchildrenhomealone
c)cleaning withflammableliquids,suchasgasoline

9. NFPAREQUIREDPROTECTION
TheNationalFireProtectionAssociation’sStandard72
readsasfollows:
2-2.1.1.1Smokealarmsshall beinstalledoutsideeach
separatesleepingareaintheimmediatevicinityofthe
bedroomsandoneachadditionalstoryofthefamilyliving
unit, includingbasementsandexcluding crawlspacesand
unfinishedattics.Innewconstruction,asmokealarmshall
beinstalledineachsleeping room.

Desirable?Therequired numberofsmokealarmsmightnot
providereliableearlywarning protectionforthoseareas
separatedbyadoorfromtheareasprotectedbythe
requiredsmokealarms.
Forthisreason,itisrecommendedthatthehouseholder
considertheuseofadditionalsmokealarmsforthoseareas
forincreasedprotection.Theadditionalareasincludethe
basement, bedrooms,diningroom,furnaceroom,utility
room,andhallwaysnotprotectedbytherequiredsmoke
alarms.Theinstallation of thesmokealarmsinthekitchen,
attic(finishedorunfinished),orgarageisnormallynot

Thisequipmentshouldbeinstalledinaccordancewiththe

10. SERVICEAND WARRANTY
Ifafterreviewingthismanualyoufeelthatyoursmoke
alarmisdefectiveinanyway,donottamperwiththeunit.
Returnitforservicing to:ConvoySecurity.(See Warranty
forin-warrantyreturns)
FIVE YEARLIMITEDWARRANTY
ConvoySecuritywarrantstotheoriginalpurchaser
thattheenclosedsmokealarm(but notthebattery)will
befree fromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipor
design undernormaluseandserviceforaperiodof
fiveyearsfromthedateofpurchase. Theobligationof
ConvoySecurityunderthiswarrantyislimitedto
repairingorreplacing thesmokealarmoranypart
whichwefindtobedefectiveinmaterial,workmanship
ordesign,free ofchargetothecustomer,upon
sending thesmokealarmwithproofofdateof
purchase,postageandreturnpostageprepaid,to
WarrantyServiceDepartment, ConvoySecurity.
Thiswarrantyshallnotapplytothesmokealarmifit
hasbeendamaged,modified,abusedoralteredafter
thedateofpurchaseorifitfailstooperatedueto
