1 8665 Smart Router Overview
1 8665 Smart Router Overview
8665 Smart Router is a cost efficient, 900 Gbp/s full duplex IP/MPLS router for pure packet
networks providing Ethernet interfaces from 1 to 100 Gbp/s. It is designed to be deployed in
medium-sized aggregation and large mobile macro sites as well as controller and S-GW sites in
technically advanced all-IP networks. It provides the flexibility and capabilities to serve all-IP
mobile and fixed networks including applications ranging from traditional consumer, enterprise and
machine-to-machine connectivity to cloud networking needs. It has the interface density, throughput
and cost effectiveness to meet the needs of fast growing data services while maintaining high
quality for low latency voice traffic.
1.1 Subrack
The 8665 Smart Router subrack can be installed into 600 mm deep 19” rack. The outer dimensions
ofthesubrackare445mm/17.51inx666mm/26.22inx445mm/17.51in(wxhxd),thewidth
with the integrated side adapter front flange is 483 mm/19.01 in.
The 8665 Smart Router is 15U high and designed for front to back airflow installations. The 8665
Smart Router subrack allows the subrack and backplane serial numbers to be read by the software
from an EEPROM device, thereby making them visible on 8000 Intelligent Network Manager and
CLI.

1.1.1 Backplane
8665 Smart Router uses a dual backplane architecture, which allows that all the cards are accessible
from the front panel. The backside of the subrack has a metal cover and all the interface connectors
are located on the front side. The signal backplane itself is passive and only provides connectors
and signal paths for high speed data packet transfer. Power distribution and low speed signaling
among the cards is handled by a separate backplane. The power backplane contains some passive
components for line termination, signal integrity purposes and the identification EEPROM.
The backplane data transmission architecture is based on differential signals in which the switch
cards are the center points for a dual star topology in a redundant configuration. There is also a
separate internal communication dual star bus topology between the units in the NE. This separate
control bus assures that the NE internal control is not lost even if the forwarding plane network
processors have problems. The other buses are power, synchronization (clock), fan module control
and unit presence busses.
