CoRMaGeowarrantstheRT‐1MagneticSusceptibilityMeteragainstdefectivecomponentsand
workmanshipforrepairattheofficeofCoRMaGeoInstrumentsorauthorizedrepairfacilitiesfree
ofchargeforaperiodoftwelve(12)monthsfromdateofsale.Shipmentcostsaretobeborne
bythecustomer.Malfunctionduetoimproperuseisnotcoveredinthiswarranty.CoRMaGeo
Instrumentsdisclaimanyliabilityforconsequentialdamageresultingfromdefectsinthe
performanceoftheequipment.TheRT‐1isnotwarrantedasbeingfitforaparticularpurpose
andthereisnowarrantyofmerchantability.
Thiswarrantyappliesonlyif:
I.Theitemsareusedsolelyundertheoperatingconditionsandinthemannerrecommended
intheRT‐1UserManual;
II.Theitemshavenotbeenmisusedorabusedinanymannerorrepairsattemptedthereon;
III.WrittennoticeofthefailurewithinthewarrantyperiodisforwardedtoCoRMaGeo

TheRT‐1MagneticSusceptibilityMeterisdesignedtomeasurethemagneticsusceptibilityof
rockoutcrops,rocksamplesanddrillcore.
Themineralthatlargelygovernsthemagneticbehaviourofarock,andwhichaccountsformost
ofthesusceptibilityobserved,ismagnetite.Thesusceptibilityofmagnetitedependsonseveral
factors,suchastheintensityofthemagnetisingfield,thechemicalcompositionofthe
magnetiteanditsgrainsize.Susceptibilitycan,however,beusedtodeterminethemagnetic
abundance,providedthatthedependencebetweensusceptibilityandmagneticabundanceis
known.

Toinstallthebatteries:
1. OnthebackfaceoftheRT‐1,unscrewthetwoscrewsandremovethebatterycover.
2. Insertthree(3)“AA”typebatteries,observingpolarity.
3. Replaceandscrewdownthebatterycover.
ToturntheRT‐1onoroff:

Note:Duringstartup,holdinairawayfromanythingmetallicasunitautomaticallyzeros

3.DESCRIPTIONOFINSTRUMENT
TheRT‐1isdesignedasaonepieceinstrumentwithagraphicsdisplayforthepresentationof
themagneticsusceptibilityvaluesinbothdigitalandanalogformat.Anaudibletoneofvarying
frequencyrelatedtothevalueallowstheoperatortofindthepeakreadingusingthegraphical
displayorthehighestfrequencysoundandthenrecordadigitalvalue.Ithassolid‐state
memorywiththeabilitytostorereadingsintogroupsandlabel(withaflag)individualreadings.
TheRT‐1hasBluetoothconnectionfortransferringdatatoaPCcomputer.

4.PRINCIPLEOFOPERATION
ThefunctionoftheRT‐1isbasedonelectromagneticinduction.Therearetwocoilsplaced
orthogonallytoeachotherinthedetectorhead,whichismountedinthetopoftheRT‐1case.
Inthenon‐magneticenvironmentthevoltageinducedfromthetransmittercoiltothereceiver
coiliszero.Whenarocksampleisbroughtnearthecoils,avoltagewhichisproportionaltothe
magneticsusceptibilityofthesampleisinducedinthereceivercoil.Thissignalisdetectedbya
phase‐lockedamplifierandafterrectificationitisusedtodrivethecircuitryforthedisplayof
themagneticsusceptibilityreadings.Thereadingisdirectlycalibratedforsusceptibility.SeeFig.
6below.

OperationMode
TheRT‐1operatesintwomodesbeingcontinuousSCANmodeorsinglereadingSTEPmode.
SCANmodeupdatesthereadingscontinuouslybylocatingpeakreadings,approximatelyonce
persecond.
STEPmodetakesreadingsonlywhenabuttonisactivatedandessentiallytakesa“snap‐shot”of
themagneticsusceptibilityatthatpoint.SelectingSTEPmodewhenstoringmeasurementswill
freezethedisplaywiththevaluejuststoredinmemory.

Thebargraphisalogscaletobaseten(10)andiscapableofshowingvaluesbetween1x10‐5
SIunitsand9.999SIunits.
BatteryReplacement
TheRT‐1doesnotcurrentlyhavealowbatterywarning(Firmwareversion1.6H).Toreplacethe
batteries,removethelidonthebackfaceoftheRT‐1byunscrewingthetwoscrewsand
replacethebatterieswiththree(3)“AA”typebatteries.
Note:Infutureversionsofthefirmware,thedevicewilldisplaya“lowbatterysymbol”when
thebatteriesarelowandan“emptybatterysymbol”whenthebatteriesareexhausted.
Zeroing
TheRT‐1mustbezeroedoccasionallytocorrectfordrift.Thisisthereferencepointagainst
whichallotheranalyticalsignalswillbemeasured.Thisisproperlyperformedunderthe
instrument’snormaloperatingconditions.

Whenyou"zero"theRT‐1youaretellingtheinstrumenttousetheelectricaloutputofthe
sensoratthetimethesensoriszeroedasthepointofreferenceforallfuturereadings.Change
insensoroutputisthenmeasuredwithrespecttotheoutputatthetimetheinstrumentwas
zeroed.
Alwaysperform“zeroing”awayintheopenair,awayfrompresenceofitemswithhigh
magneticsusceptibility.WhenyouzerotheRT‐1,theelectricaloutputofthesensoratthat
momentbecomesthepointofcomparison.Ifthesensoriszeroedclosetosomethingwithhigh
magneticsusceptibilitythentheinstrumentmaydisplayafalsereading.
Re‐zeroingtheRT‐1
Whentakingreadingsonsamplesofhighmagneticsusceptibilityitmaybenecessarytore‐zero
themeterbeforetakingreadingsagainonsamplesofmuchlowersusceptibility.Thisisdueto
remnantenergybeingstoredinthesensorcoilmakingreadingswithlowmagnetic
susceptibilityappeartoohigh.
DrillCoreCorrectionFactors
Ingeneral,ifsamplesaretoosmallsothatairissensedbythedetector,thereadingwillbe
somewhatlessthanthetruevalue.Howmuchdependsonactualdimensionsbutitisrarelyless
thanhalf.
