ASSEMBLY
Read these instructions and this manual !n its entirety
before you attempt to assemble or operate your new lawn
mower. Your new !awn mower has been assembled at the
factory with the excepli0n of these pads teft unassembled
for shipping purposes. To ensure sale and proper opera-
tion el your tawn mower, aH parts and hardware you
aesemb{e must be tightened securely, Use the correct
tools as necessary to ensure proper tightness. All paris
such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc, necessary to comp{ete
the assembly have been placed in the parts bag

HOWTO SET UPYOUR LAWN MOWER
TO UNFOLD HANDLE (See Figs° 1A & 1B) '
IMPORTANT: UNFOLD HANDLE CAREFULLY SO AS
NOT TO PINCH OR'DAMAGE CONTROL CABLES,
• , Raise lower handle sect{on to operating position and
squeeze the bettom ends of lower handle towards
each other until the pin in handle can be inserted Into
one of the three height adjustment holes,
, Raise upper handle section to operating position, re-
move protective padding and tighten handie knobs
secure{y.
. Remove any packing materia{ from around contro! bar
* Your haodies may be adjusted for your mowlng corn-
:loft Refer to Service and Adjustments section of this
manual.

Your lawn mower was shipped ready to be used as a

REAR BAGGING (See Fig 2A) -
• Open rear door end remove mulcher plug Store
mulcher plug in a saf eplace ,
•You can now install grass catciler
• To convert to mu_ching Or dlschargtng operation,
installmuicher plug into rear discharge opening of
mower, making sure atl tabs are seated properly
SiDE DiSCHARGiNG (See Fig 2B)- .
•Mule.her plug must be installed into rear discharge
opening of mower (see above instructions)
• Unlock closed discharge gun rd by liftinglatch and allow
guard to swing open to discharging position
• Mower is now ready for _Jischarging operation
• To convert to mulching or bagging operation, dis-
charge guard must be closed and locked securely

• Be sure mower is level and area around oil fltl isclean
• Remove englne oil cap w/dipstick and fill to the fult line
on the dipstick,,
•Use27ozsof oil. Fortypeandgradeoioittouse, see

manual.
• Pour oil stowly Do not over fill
• Check oil [evel before each use Add oil tf needed; Fili

fuels {called gasohpl or using ethanol or methanol) can

age of 30 days or longer. Drain the fuel tank, start the

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

RESPONSIBILITIES SECTION OF THIS MANUAL
• The special mulching blade will recur the grass clip-
pings many tirnes and reduce them in size so Ihat as
they fatf onto the lawn they will disperse Into the grass
and not be noticed. Also the mulched grass will
biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn.
Always mulch With your highest engine (blade) speed
as thls will provide the best recurring action of'the
blades.
• Avoid cutting your lawn when ItiSwet. Wet grass tends
to form clumps end interferes with the mulching action.
The best time to mow your lawn is.the eady afternoon..
At this time the grass has dried and the new!y cut area
will not be exposed Io the direcl sun.
•For best results, adjust the iawn mower cutttng height
so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one-thfrd
of the grass blades (See Fig. 11). If the lawn is
overgrown itwil] be necessary to raise the height of cut
to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading
the engin_e and leaving clumps of mulched grass For
extremely heavy mulching, reduce your Width of cut by
over!applng prevtpusJY out path and mow slowly
• Certain types of grass and grass conditions may re-
qulre that an area be mulched a seqond time to
comp!etely hide the clippings. When doing a second
cut mo wacross or perpendicular to the first cut path_

next week. This will help prevent matting and gra!ning

GEAR CASE
•To keep your drive system working properly, the goal"
case andaraa around the drive should be kept clean
and free of trash build-up. Clean under the drive cover
twice a season.
- The gear case isflHed with lubricant to the proper level
at the factory. The only time the lubdcan! needs
'altentfen Is ff sehrica has been performed on the gear
case.,
•If lubricant is required, use only Texaco Starptex Pro-
mfum Grease, part no, 750355 Do not substitute.
DRIVE WHEELS
Check front drive wheets each time before you mow to be
sure they move lreelyr
The wheels not t!Jrblng freely means trash, grass cuttings,
etc. Ere inthe drive wheel area and must be cleaned to tree
drive wheels
If necessary to clean the drive wheels, cheek both front
wheels,
;Remove hubcaps, hairpin cotters and washers.
• Remove wheels from wheel adjusters.
• Remove any trash or grass cuttings from Inside the
dust cover, pinion and/or drive wheel gear teeth,
• Put wheeis .back In place;
•If after cleaning, the drive wheels do not turn free!y,
contact your nearest authorized service center.
GRASS CATCHER
• The grass catcher may be hosed with water, but must
be dry when used,
Check your grass catcher often lot damage or deterio-
ration Through normal use it witt wear. I! catcher
needs replacing, repiace onty wilh a manufacturer
approved replacement catcher. Give the lawn mower
model number when ordering,

LUBRICATION
Use only high quality detergent oil rated with API sewice
classification SF or SG Select the oil's SAE visco.sily grade
according to your expected operating temperature
NOTE: Although mu_fi-vtsc0sity oifs (5W30, tOW30 etc.)
Improve starting tn cold weather, those multFvtscosity otis
wilt result in increased oil consumption when used above
32°F. Check your engine 011level more frequently to avoid
POssible engtne damage from running iow on oil
Change the oil after the first two hours of operation and
every 25 hours thereafter or.at least once a year if the lawn
mower is not used for 25 hours in one year
Check the crankcase oil level before starting the englne
and alter each five (5) hours of continuous use Tighten oil
plug securely each time you check the oil level
TO CHANGE ENGINE OiL (See Fig. 13)
NOTE: Before tipping lawn mower Io drain oil, drain fuel
tank by running engine until fuel tank is empty_
• Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place
Wire where it cannot come in contact with spark plug.
•Remove engine oll cap; lay aside on aclean surface
• Tip lawn mower on its side e_d drain oil into a suitable
container Rock lawn mower back and forth to remove
any oil trapped inside of engine_
• Wipe off any spilled oil on lawn mower and on side of
engine.
, F!tl engine with oil Fill only to the "FULL ='line on the
dipstick. DO NOT OVER FiLL
• Replace engine ott cap
• Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug
AIR FILTER

•Loosen cover screw.
• Swing cover down and remove from hinge

assembled properly,
• Swing cover up and tighten cover screw (Do not
