1. Cutthecornersofthecartonandlaythesidesflat ontheground.

discardingit.

Chute Clean=Out Tool
A chute clean-out tool isfastenedtothetopoftheaugerhousing
witha mountingclip.SeeFigure6.Thetoolisdesignedtocleara
chuteassemblyoficeandsnow.Thisitemisfastenedwitha cabletie
atthefactory.Cutthecabletiebeforeoperatingthesnowthrower.

Tire Pressure
Beforeoperating,checktirepressureand reducepressurein bothtires
tobetween15psiand20 psi.
NOTE:If thetirepressureisnotequalin bothtires,theunitmaynot
travelin a straightpathandtheshaveplatemaywearunevenly.
ADJUSTMENTS
Skid Shoes
Thesnowthrowerskidshoesareadjustedupwardatthefactoryfor
shippingpurposes.Adjustthemdownward,ifdesired,priorto operat-
ingthesnowthrower.

NOTE:If youchoosetooperatethesnowthroweron a gravelsurface,
keeptheskidshoesin positionformaximumclearancebetweenthe
groundandtheshaveplate.
Toadjusttheskidshoes:
1. Loosenthefourhexnuts(twooneachside)andcarriagebolts.
Moveskidshoestodesiredposition. SeeFigure7.
2. Makecertaintheentirebottomsurfaceof skidshoeisagainstthe
groundtoavoidunevenwearontheskidshoes.
3. Retightennutsand boltssecurely.

Chute Assembly
Thedistancesnowisthrowncanbeadjustedbychangingtheangleof
thechuteassembly.Todo so:
1. Stoptheenginebyremovingtheignitionkeyand loosenthe
plasticwingknobfoundon theleftsideof thechuteassembly.
2. Pivotthechuteupwardordownwardbeforeretighteningthewing
knob.SeeFigure8.
Auger Control
Priorto operatingyoursnowthrower,carefullyreadandfollowall
instructionsbelow.Performalladjustmentstoverifyyoursnow
throwerisoperatingsafelyand properly.
Checktheadjustmentoftheaugercontrolasfollows:
1. Whentheaugercontrolisreleasedandin thedisengaged"up"
position,thecableshouldhaveverylittleslack.ItshouldNOTbe
tight.
2. Ina well-ventilatedarea,startthesnowthrowerengine.Refer
toStartingtheEngineinthaiOperationsection.Makesurethe
throttleissetin theFAST_1 position.
3. Whilestandingintheoperator'sposition(behindthesnow
thrower),engagetheauger.
4. Allowtheaugertoremainengagedforapproximatelyten(10)
secondsbeforereleasingtheaugercontrol.Repeatthisseveral
times.
5. WiththethrottlecontrolintheFAST(rabbit)_ positionand
theaugercontrolin thedisengaged"up"position,walktothefront
ofthemachine.
6. Confirmthattheaugerhascompletelystoppedrotatingand
showsNOsignsofmotion.If theaugershowsANYsignsof
rotating,immediatelyreturntotheoperator'spositionandshutoff
theengine.WaitforALL movingpartstostopbeforere-adjusting
theaugercontrol.
7. Toreadjustthecontrolcable,loosentheupperhex nuton the
augercablebracket.SeeFigure9.
8. Positionthebracketupwardtoprovidemoreslack(or downward
toincreasecabletension).
9. Retightentheupperhexnut.
10. Repeatsteps2-6aboveto verifyproperadjustmenthasbeen
achieved.

CHOKE CONTROL III
Thechokecontrolisfoundon therearof theengineandisactivated
byrotatingtheknobclockwise.Activatingthechokecontrolclosesthe
chokeplateonthecarburetorandaidsinstartingtheengine.

Thethrottlecontrolis locatedontherearoftheengine.
It regulatesthespeedoftheengineandwillshutoff the
enginewhenmovedintotheSTOPposition.
RECOIL STARTER HANDLE
This handleisusedto manuallystarttheengine.
ELECTRIC STARTER BUTTON
Pressingtheelectricstarterbuttonengagestheengine's
electricstarterwhenpluggedintoa 120Vpowersource.
ELECTRIC STARTER OUTLET
Requirestheuseofa three-prongoutdoorextensioncord
(included)anda 120Vpowersource/walloutlet.

Neveruseyourhandstocleara cloggedchuteassembly.Shut
off engineand remainbehindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshave
stoppedbeforeunclogging.
Thechuteclean-outtoolisconvenientlyfastenedtothe rearofthe
augerhousingwitha mountingclip. Shouldsnowandicebecome
lodgedin thechuteassemblyduringoperation,proceedasfollowsto
safelycleanthechuteassemblyandchuteopening:
1. ReleaseboththeAugerControlandtheDriveControl.
2. Stoptheenginebyremovingtheignitionkey.
3. Removetheclean-outtoolfromtheclipwhichsecuresittothe
rearoftheaugerhousing.
4. Usetheshovel-shapedendof theclean-outtooltodislodgeand
scoopanysnowandicewhichhasformedin andnearthechute
assembly.
5. Refastentheclean-outtooltothemountingclipon therearof
theaugerhousing,reinsertthe ignitionkeyandstartthesnow
thrower'sengine.
6. Whilestandingintheoperator'sposition(behindthesnow
thrower),engagetheaugercontrolfora fewsecondsto clearany
remainingsnowandicefromthechuteassembly.
BEFORE STARTING ENGINE
Read,understand,andfollowall instructionsandwarningsonthe
machineand inthis manualbeforeoperating.
Oil
Theunitwasshippedwithoil intheengine.Checkoil levelbeforeeach
operationtoensureadequateoil intheengine.Forfurtherinstructions,
referto thestepsonpage 17.
1. Removethedipstickfromtheoilfill.
2. Checkandmakesurethatthelevelofoil isupto theFULLmark
onthedipstick.
3. If theoil levelis notupto FULL,pourfreshmotoroil (5W-30,with
a minimumclassificationofSL/SJ)slowlythroughtheopening.
Replaceoil filldipstickandcheckoil levelagain.
Gasoline
Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely
flammableandthevaporsareexplosive.Neverfuel themachine
indoorsor whiletheengineishotor running.Extinguishcigarettes,
[c gars,ppesand othersourcesof gnt on.

placeonthecontainer.

STARTING THE ENGINE
1. Attachsparkplugwiretosparkplug.Makecertainthe metal
loopon theend ofthesparkplugwire(insidetherubberboot)is
fastenedsecurelyoverthemetaltip onthesparkplug.
2. Makecertainboththeaugercontrolanddrivecontrolarein the
disengaged(released)position.
3. MovethrottlecontroluptoFAST_ position.Insertignitionkey
intoslot.Makesureitsnapsintoplace.Donotattempttoturnthe
key.
NOTE:Theenginecannotstartwithoutthekeyis fullyinsertedintothe
ignitionswitch.
Electric Starter
Determinethatyourhome'swiringisa three-wiregroundedsystem.
Aska licensedelectricianifyouarenotcertain.
Theoptionalelectricstarterisequippedwitha groundedthree-wire
powercordandplug,and isdesignedtooperateon 120voltAC
householdcurrent.It mustbe usedwith aproperlygroundedthree-
prongreceptacleatall timestoavoidthepossibilityofelectricshock.
Followall instructionscarefullypriortooperatingtheelectricstarter.
Ifyouhavea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedasfollows:
1. Plugtheextensioncordintotheoutletlocatedontheengine's
surface.Plugtheotherend ofextensioncordintoathree-prong
120-volt,grounded,ACoutletina well-ventilatedarea.
2. RotatechokecontroltoFULL I,.#'1chokeposition(foracold
enginestart).
NOTE:If theengineis alreadywarm,placechokecontrolin theOFF
positioninsteadofFULL IJl •
3. Pushtheprimertwoor threetimesforcoldenginestart, making
suretocoverventholeinthecenterofthe primerwhenpushing.
NOTE:DONOTuseprimerto restarta warmengineaftera short
shutdown.
4. Pushstarterbuttontostartengine.
NOTE:Donotholdthebuttondownforlongerthanseven(7)seconds
ata time.Doingso maydamageyourengine'selectricstarter.

5. Oncetheenginestarts,releasestarterbutton.
6. Astheenginewarms,slowlyrotatechokecontrolto theOFF
position.Iftheenginefalters,quicklyrotatechokecontrolbackto
FULL 14D"IthenslowlyintotheOFFpositionagain.
7. Whendisconnectingtheextensioncord,alwaysunplugtheend
atthethree-prongwalloutletbeforeunpluggingtheoppositeend
fromthesnowthrower.
Recoil Starter
1. RotatechokecontroltoFULL IJl chokeposition(coldengine
start).
NOTE:Iftheengineisalreadywarm,placechokecontrolintheOFF
insteadofFULLIJ|.
position
2. Pushtheprimertwoorthreetimesforcoldenginestart,making
sureto coverventholeinthecenteroftheprimerwhenpushing.
NOTE:DONOTuseprimertorestartawarmengineaftera short
shutdown.
NOTE:Additionalprimingmaybe necessaryifthetemperatureis
below15°Fahrenheit.
3. Grasptherecoilstarterhandleandslowlypulltheropeout.Atthe
pointwhereitbecomesslightlyhardertopullthe rope,slowly
allowtheropetorecoil.
4. Pullthestarterhandlewitha firm,rapidstroke.Donotrelease
thehandleandallowit tosnapback.Keepa firmholdon the
starterhandleandallowittoslowlyrecoil.
5. Astheenginewarms,slowlyrotatethechokecontroltotheOFF
position.Iftheenginefalters,quicklyrotatethechokecontrol
backtotheFULL I,_1 positionandthenslowlyintotheOFF
positionagain.
NOTE:Allowtheenginetowarmupforafew minutesafterstarting.
Theenginewill notdevelopfullpoweruntilit reachesoperating
temperatures.
STOPPING THE ENGINE
Runenginefora fewminutesbeforestoppingto helpdryoff any
moistureontheengine.
MovethrottlecontroltoSTOP
1. position.
2. Removethe ignitionkeyandstoreina safeplace.
3. Wipeall snowandmoisturefromtheareaaroundtheengineas
wellas theareainand aroundthedrivecontrolandaugercontrol.
Also,engageandreleasebothcontrolsseveraltimes.
TO ENGAGE DRIVE
1. WiththethrottlecontrolintheFast_ position,moveshiftlever
intooneofthesix forward(F)positionsor tworeverse(R)
positions.Selecta speedappropriateforthesnowconditionsand
a paceyou'recomfortablewith.
NOTE:Whenselectinga DriveSpeed,usetheslowerspeedsuntil
youarecomfortableandfamiliarwiththeoperationofthesnow
thrower.
2. Squeezethedrivecontrolagainstthehandlethesnowthrower
will move.Releaseitanddrivemotionwillstop.
NOTE:NEVERrepositiontheshiftlever(changespeedsor direction
of travel)withoutfirstreleasingthedrivecontrolandbringingthesnow
throwertoa completestop.Doingsowillresultin prematurewearto
thesnowthrower'sdrivesystem.
TO ENGAGE AUGERS
1. Toengagetheaugersandstartthrowingsnow,squeezethe
augercontrolagainstthelefthandle.Releasetostoptheaugers.
REPLACING SHEAR PiNS
Theaugersaresecuredtothespiralshaftwithtwoshearpinsandcot-
terpins.if theaugershouldstrikea foreignobjector icejam,thesnow
throwerisdesignedsothattheshearpinsmayshear.Iftheaugerswill
notturn,checktoseeifthepinshavesheared.SeeFigure11.
NEVERreplacetheaugershearpinswith anythingotherthanOEM
PartNo.738-04124Areplacementshearpins.Anydamagetothe
augergearboxorothercomponentsasa resultoffailingtodo sowill

Engine Speed

Tamperingwiththegovernorsettingcancausetheengineand
equipmenttooperateatunsafespeeds.NEVERtamperwithfactory
settingofenginegovernor.Runningtheenginefasterthanthespeed
set atthefactoryisdangerous.
LUBRICATION
Gear Shaft
Thegear(hex)shaftshouldbelubricatedatleastoncea seasonor
afterevery25 hoursofoperation.
1. Carefullypivotthesnowthrowerup andforwardsothat itrestson
theaugerhousing.
2. Removethe lowerframecoverfromtheundersideofthesnow
throwerbyremovingthefourself-tappingscrewswhichsecureit.
3. Applya lightcoatingofengineoil (or 3-in-1oil)tothehexshaft.

NOTE:Whenlubricatingthehexshaft,be carefulnottogetanyoilon
thealuminumdriveplateor rubberfrictionwheel.Doingso willhinder
thesnowthrower'sdrivesystem.Wipeoff anyexcessor spilledoil.
Wheels
Atleastoncea season,removebothwheels.Cleanandcoattheaxles
witha multipurposeautomotivegreasebeforereinstallingwheels.
Chute Directional Control
Oncea season,lubricatetheeyeboltbushingandthespiralwith
3-in-1oil.
Auger Shaft

SHAVE PLATE AND SKID SHOES
Theshaveplateandskidshoesonthe bottomofthesnowthrowerare
subjectto wear.Theyshouldbecheckedperiodicallyandreplaced
whennecessary.
Toremoveskid shoes:
1. Removethefourcarriageboltsandhexflangenutswhichsecure
themto thesnowthrower.
2. Reassemblenewskidshoeswiththefourcarriagebolts(twoon
eachside)andhexflangenuts.Referto Figure17.
Toremoveshaveplate:
1. Removethecarriageboltsand hexnutswhichattachittothe
snowthrowerhousing.
2. Reassemblenewshaveplate,makingsureheadsofcarriage
boltsaretotheinsideofhousing.Tightensecurely.
ADJUSTMENTS
Shift Cable
If thefullrangeofspeeds(forwardandreverse)cannotbe achieved,
refertothefiguretotherightandadjusttheshiftcableasfollows:
1. Placetheshiftleverin thefastest forwardspeedposition.
2. Loosenthehex nutontheshiftcableindexbracket.SeeFigure
18.
3. Pivotthebracketdownwardtotakeupslackinthecable.
4. Retightenthehexnut.
Drive Control
Whenthedrivecontrolisreleasedandin thedisengaged"up"position,
thecableshouldhavevery littleslack.It shouldNOTbe tight.Also,
ifthereisexcessiveslackin thedrivecableor iftheunitexperiences
intermittentdrivewhileusing,thecablemayneedtobeadjusted.
Checktheadjustmentofthedrivecontrolasfollows:
1. Withthedrivecontrolreleased,pushthesnowthrowergently
forward.Theunitshouldrollfreely.
2. Engagethedrivecontrolandgentlyattempttopushthesnow
throwerforward.Thewheelsshouldnotturn.Theunitshouldnot
rollfreely.
3. Withthedrivecontrolreleased,movetheshiftleverbackand
forthbetweentheR2positionandtheF5positionseveraltimes.
Thereshouldbenoresistanceintheshiftlever.
4. If anyoftheabovetestsfailed,thedrivecableisin needof adjust-
ment.Proceedasfollows:
