clip.Thetoolisdesignedtoclearachuteassemblyof iceandsnow.
Thisitemisfastenedwitha cabletieatthefactory.Cutthecabletiebeforeoperating
thesnowthrower.
WARNING: Never use your hands to clear aclogged
chute assembly. Shut off engine and remain behind
handles until all moving parts have stopped before
using the clean-out tool to clear the chute assembly.

Preparation
1. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto beused.Remove
all doormats,newspapers,sleds,boards,wiresand otherforeignobjects,
whichcould betrippedoveror thrownbythe auger/impeller.
2. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eyeshieldsduringoperationandwhile
performingan adjustmentor repairto protectyoureyes.Thrownobjects
whichricochetcancauseseriousinjurytothe eyes.
3. Donotoperatewithoutwearingadequatewinteroutergarments.Donot
wearjewelry,longscarvesor otherlooseclothing,whichcouldbecome
entangledinmovingparts.Wearfootwearwhichwill improvefootingon
slipperysurfaces.
4. Useagroundedthree-wireextensioncordandreceptaclefor all unitswith
electricstartengines.
5. Adjustcollectorhousingheighttoclear gravelor crushedrocksurfaces.
6. Disengageall controlleversbeforestartingthe engine.
7. Neverattempttomakeanyadjustmentswhileengineis running,except
wherespecificallyrecommendedinthe operator'smanual.
8. Letengineandmachineadjusttooutdoortemperaturebeforestartingto
clearsnow.

1. Read,understand,andfollowallinstructionsontile machineandinthe
manual(s)beforeattemptingto assembleandoperate.Keepthismanualin
asafeplaceforfutureandregularreferenceandfor orderingreplacement
parts.
2. Befamiliarwith allcontrolsandtheirproperoperation.Knowhowtostop
themachineand disengagethemquickly.
3. Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsoldto operatethis machine.Children
14yearsoldandovershouldreadandunderstandthe operationinstruc-
tionsand safetyrulesinthismanualandshouldbetrainedandsupervised
bya parent.
4. Neverallowadultsto operatethis machinewithoutproperinstruction.
5. Thrownobjectscancauseseriouspersonalinjury.Planyoursnow-throwing
patterntoavoiddischargeofmaterialtowardroads,bystandersandthelike.

Operation
1. Do notputhandsorfeetnearrotatingparts,intile auger/impellerhousing
orchuteassembly.Contactwith therotatingpartscan amputatehands
andfeet.
2. Theauger/impellercontrolleverisasafetydevice.Neverbypassits
operation.Doingsomakesthemachineunsafeand maycausepersonal
injury.
3. Thecontrolleversmustoperateeasilyinbothdirectionsandautomatically
returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
4. Neveroperatewitha missingor damagedchute assembly.Keepall safety
devicesin placeandworking.
5. Neverrunan engineindoorsor in apoorlyventilatedarea. Engineexhaust
containscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.
6. Do notoperatemachinewhileunderthe influenceofalcoholor drugs.
7. Mufflerand enginebecomehotandcancausea burn. Donottouch.
8. Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingon orcrossinggravelsurfaces.
Stayalertforhiddenhazardsortraffic.
9. Exercisecautionwhenchangingdirectionandwhile operatingon slopes.
10.Planyoursnow-throwingpatterntoavoiddischargetowardswindows,
walls,carsetc.Thus, avoidingpossiblepropertydamageor personal

11.Neverdirectdischargeatchildren,bystandersand petsor allowanyonein
frontofthe machine.
12.Do notoverloadmachinecapacityby attemptingto clearsnowattoofast
ofa rate.
13.Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityor light.Alwaysbesure
ofyourfootingandkeepa firmholdonthe handles.Walk,neverrun.
14.Disengagepowertothe auger/impellerwhentransportingor notin use.
15.Neveroperatemachineat hightransportspeedson slipperysurfaces.
Lookdownandbehindand usecarewhenbackingup.
16.Ifthe machineshouldstarttovibrateabnormally,stopthe engine,
disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundit againsttheengine.Inspect
thoroughlyfor damage.Repairanydamagebeforestartingand operating.
17.Disengageallcontrolleversandstop enginebeforeyou leavethe operat-
ingposition(behindthe handles).Waituntiltheauger/impellercomes
toacompletestopbeforeuncloggingthechuteassembly,makingany
adjustments,or inspections.
18.Neverputyourhandinthe dischargeor collectoropenings.Alwaysuse
theclean-outtool providedto unclogthedischargeopening.Do notunclog
chuteassemblywhileengineis running.Shutoff engineand remain
behindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshavestoppedbeforeunclogging.
19.Useonlyattachmentsand accessoriesapprovedbythe manufacturer(e.g.
wheelweights,tirechains,cabsetc.).
20.Ifsituationsoccurwhich arenotcoveredin thismanual,usecareand
goodjudgment.ContactyourSearsServiceCenterforassistance.
Maintenance & Storage
1. Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperationregularly.
Referto the maintenanceand adjustmentsectionsofthis manual.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspectingmachinedisengageallcontrol
leversand stoptheengine.Waituntiltheauger/impellercometo a
completestop.Disconnectthe sparkplugwireandgroundagainstthe
enginetopreventunintendedstarting.
3. Checkboltsandscrewsfor propertightnessatfrequentintervalstokeep
the machinein safeworkingcondition.Also,visuallyinspectmachinefor
anydamage.
4. Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingor over-speedtheengine.The
governorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeedofthe engine.
5. Snowthrowershaveplatesandskid shoesaresubjecttowearand
damage.Foryoursafetyprotection,frequentlycheckallcomponentsand
replacewithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(OEM)partsonly."Useof
partswhich donotmeetthe originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadto
improperperformanceand compromisesafety!"
6. Checkcontrolsperiodicallytoverifythey engageanddisengageproperly
and adjust,if necessary.Refertothe adjustmentsectionin this operator's
manualforinstructions.
7. Maintainor replacesafetyand instructionlabels,asnecessary.
8. Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsfor gas, oil,etc.to protect
the environment.
9. Priortostoring,runmachineafewminutestoclearsnowfrommachine
andpreventfreezeup ofauger/impeller.
10.Neverstorethe machineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethere isanopen
flame,sparkor pilotlightsuchasawaterheater,furnace,clothes dryer
etc.
11.Alwaysrefertothe operator'smanualfor properinstructionsonoff-season
storage.
Do not modify engine
Toavoidseriousinjuryor death,do notmodifyenginein anyway.Tampering
withthegovernorsettingcanleadto arunawayengineandcauseitto operate
at unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwithfactorysettingofenginegovernor.
Notice regarding Emissions
Engineswhichare certifiedtocomplywith CaliforniaandfederalEPAemission
regulationsforSORE(SmallOffRoadEquipment)arecertifiedtooperateon
regularunleadedgasoline,and mayincludethefollowingemissioncontrolsys-
tems:EngineModification(EM)andThreeWayCatalyst(TWO)if so equipped.
Engine identification Decal
Thisdecalindicatestheengine'smodelnumber,specificationandthe dateof
manufacture.Pleaselookatthe decalontheengineofyourequipmentand
recordtheseinformationforfuturereference.
Theengineidentificationdecalalsoincludesenginelifespecificationsfor the
emissions-relatedusefullifeperiodofthe engine.This periodrelatestothe
emissioncompliancelifeascertifiedbyEPAand/orCARB.Tofindthe lifeperiod
specificationofthe engine,pleasereadthe enginedecaland locatethe letter
(enclosedbyquotationmarks)betweenthewordsModerateandLifePeriod.
Matchone ofthefollowingletterswiththeletterprintedonyourdecal.For
example,HMSK80 modelsaredesignatedas:
"C"-- 250hours
"B"-- 500hours
"A"-- 1000hours

IMPORTANT:This unitisshippedwiththeenginefullofoil.After
assembly,seepage10forfuelandoildetails.
Removing From Carton
1. Cutthecornersofthecartonandlaythesidesflaton theground.
Removeall packinginserts.
2. Theupperhandleispackagedunattachedtothesnowthrower,
thoughconnectedbycables.Movethesnowthrowerandupper
handleoutofthecarton.
3. Makecertainthecartonhasbeencompletelyemptiedbefore
discardingit.
Before Assembly
,_ WARNING:Disconnectthe spark plugwireand Ground
itagainstthe engineto preventunintendedstarting.
NOTE:Referencetoright,left,frontor rearof theunitisfromthe
operatingpositionunlessotherwisestated.

Setting Up The Handle
1. If applicable,removecabletiesecuringupperhandletolower
handleforshippingpurposes.Removeall protectiveplasticwrap-
pingfromhandlesasshownin Figure1.
NOTE: BecarefulNOTto removethethreelooselyfittedcableties
thatwillbeutilizedlatertosecurecables.
2. Loosenandremovethestarknob,handletab,andcarriagescrew
oneachsideofthelowerhandle.SeeFigure2.
3. Slideoneofthelooselyfittedcabletiesfromtherightsideofthe
lowerhandleuptothecrossmemberofthelowerhandle.Leave
thesecondcabletiein placeontherightsideofthelowerhandle.
IMPORTANT:It willbenecessaryto lifttheupperhandlewhilesliding
upthis cabletietopreventdamagetothecable.
4. Liftthe upperhandleupand positionit overthelowerhandle,
aligningtheholeswherethestarknobswereremoved(1).
CAUTION:Be careful not to bend or kink thecables,
5. Inserta carriagescrewfromtheoutsidethrougha handletab,the
upperand lowerhandles,andintothestar knob(2). Repeatonthe
otherside.
6. Tightenthestarknobsoneachsideofthehandle.RefertoFigure3.
NOTE:Theaugercableandspeedcontrolcableroutedowntheleft
lowerhandlefromthespeedcontrolbox.Thedrivecableisrouted
acrossthetopofthelowerhandleanddowntherightsideofthelower
handle.SeeFigure4.
7. Threecabletieshavebeenusedtolooselytiethecontrolcables
tothelowerhandle,includingthecabletieyourelocatedinstep3.
Positioncabletiesnow,asin Figure4,and tightentosecurecables
tothelowerhandle.Trimoff excessmaterialofcableties.
Skid Shoe
Thespacebetweentheshaveplateandthegroundcanbeadjusted.Refer
toFigure6onpage8 forlocationofshaveplateandskidshoes.Forclose
snowremoval,placeskidshoesin lowposition.Whenareatobeclearedis
uneven,placeskidshoesinthemiddleor highposition.SeeFigure5.

NOTE:Operationofthissnowthrowerongravelisnotrecommendedas

on gravel,keepskidshoeinhighestpositionformaximumclearance.
1. Adjustskidshoesbylooseningtwonutsandcarriageboltsoneach
skidshoe,andmovingskidshoetothedesiredposition.SeeFigure5.
2. Makecertaintheentirebottomsurfaceofskidshoeisagainstthe
groundtoavoidunevenwearon theskid shoes.
3. Tightennutsandboltssecurely.
Clean-Out Tool
Thistoolhasbeenfastenedwitha cabletietotherearoftheaugerhousing
forshippingpurposes.Cutandremovecabletieasinstructedonpage3.
Final Adjustments
IMPORTANT:Checktheadjustmentsasinstructedand makeany
finaladjustmentsnecessarybeforeoperatingtheunit.Checkall nuts
and boltsfortightness.Failuretofollowtheseinstructionsmaycause
damagetounit.
Tire Pressure
Theproperinflationpressureis 20 psi.Checkthetire pressureperiodi-
callyandmaintainequalpressureinbothtiresatalltimes.Excessive
pressure(wellabove20psi)maycausethewheel(tire/rim)assembly
to burstwithsufficientforcetocauseseriousinjury.Donotover-inflate
thetire.Usea manualpumporportableelectrictireinflatortoprevent
over-inflation.NEVERUSEANAIRCOMPRESSOR.
,_ WARNING:Over-inflatingthetire with excessivepres-
sure(well above20 psi)maycausethe tire/rim to burst
with sufficient forceto cause serious pressure.
Auger Control Test
IMPORTANT:Performthefollowingtestbeforeoperatingthesnow
throwerforthefirsttimeandatthestartofeachwinterseason.
Checktheadjustmentoftheaugercontrolasfollows:
1. Whenaugercontrolisreleasedandin thedisengaged"up"posi-
,_ tion,cableshouldhavevery littleslack,butshouldNOT
betight.
WARNING:Donot over-tighten the cable.Over-tight-
eningmay preventthe auger from disengaging and compromise
the safety of the snowthrower.
2. Ina well-ventilatedarea,startthesnowthrowerengineas in-
structedon page10undertheheadingStartingEngine.Makesure
thethrottleisset intheFASTposition.
3. Whilestandinginoperator'sposition(behindunit)engageauger.
4. Allowaugertoremainengagedforapproximatelyten(10)seconds
beforereleasingtheaugercontrol.Repeatthisseveraltimes.
5. Withtheenginerunningin theFASTpositionandtheaugercontrol
inthedisengaged"up"position,walktothefrontofthemachine.
6. Confirmthattheaugerhascompletelystoppedrotatingandshows
NOsignsofmotion.
IMPORTANT:IftheaugershowsANYsignsofrotating,immediatelyreturn
totheoperator'spositionandshutofftheengine.Waitforallmovingparts
tostopbeforereadjustingtheaugercontrolcableasshownonpage13.

Drive Control
Locatedon theundersideof theupperhandle,thedrivecontrolis used
toengage/disengagewheels.Squeezethedrivecontrolagainstthe
upperhandletoengagethewheels;releasetodisengage.
Auger Control
Theaugercontrolisadjacenttotheupperhandle.Squeezetheauger
controlagainsttheupperhandletoengagetheaugers;releaseto
disengagetheaugers.
_ ARNING:Nevermakeadjustments to the chute
assembly unless bothauger and drive controls are
disengaged and the operator isstanding besidethe
unit.
iMPORTANT:RefertoAugerControlTeston page7 priorto operating
yoursnowthrower.Readandfollowall instructionscarefullyand
performalladjustmentstoverifyyoursnowthrowerisoperatingsafely
andproperly.
Chute Handle
Thedirectionofsnowthrowingcorrespondstothedirectionofthe
chuteopening.Usethechutehandletoturnthechuteassemblyin the
directionyouwishtothrowthesnow.
Chute Knob
Thedistancesnowisthrowncanbeadjustedbyeitherraisingor
loweringtheupperchute.Loosenthechuteknobonthesideofthe
upperchutetoadjust.Pivottheupperchutetodesiredposition,and
retightenthechuteknob.
Speed Selection Lever

aretotheinsideofthehousing.Reinstallskidshoes.Tightensecurely.
Servicing Augers
Theaugersaresecuredtothespiralshaftwithfourshearpinsand
