1. Read,understand,andfollowall instructionsonthe
machineandin themanual(s)beforeattemptingto
assembleandoperate.Keepthismanualina safe

Knowhowtostopthe machineanddisengagethem
quickly.
3. Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsold tooperate
this machine.Children14yearsoldandovershould
readandunderstandtheoperationinstructionsand
safetyrulesinthis manualandshouldbetrainedand
supervisedbya parent.

9. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fitting
slacksandshirts.Loosefittingclothesandjewelry
canbecaughtinmovableparts.Neveroperatethis
machinein barefeetor sandals.
10.Beawareofthemowerandattachmentdischarge
directionanddo notpointitatanyone.Donotoperate
themowerwithoutthedischargecoverorentiregrass

dismounting.
22.Useextracarewhenloadingorunloadingthe
machineintoa trailerortruck.Thisunitshouldnot

Slope Operation:
Slopesare a majorfactorrelatedtolossofcontroland
tip-overaccidentswhichcanresultin severeinjuryor
death.All slopesrequireextracaution.If youcannot
backuptheslopeor ifyoufeeluneasyonit, do notmow
it.
Foryoursafety,usetheslopegaugeincludedaspartof
thismanualto measureslopesbeforeoperatingthisunit
ona slopedor hillyarea.Iftheslopeisgreaterthan15
degreesasshownon theslopegauge,do notoperate
thisunitonthatareaor seriousinjurycouldresult.
DO:
1. Mowupanddownslopes,notacross.Exercise
extremecautionwhenchangingdirectiononslopes.
2. Watchforholes,ruts,bumps,rocks,orotherhidden
objects.Uneventerraincouldoverturnthe machine.
Tallgrasscanhideobstacles.
3. Useslowspeed.Choosea lowenoughspeed
settingsothatyouwill nothaveto stopor shiftwhile
ontheslope.Tiresmaylosetractiononslopeseven
thoughthebrakesarefunctioningproperly.Always

2. Donotmowneardrop-offs,ditchesor embankments.
Themowercouldsuddenlyturnoverif awheelisover
theedgeofa cliff,ditch,or ifan edgecavesin.
3. Donottry tostabilizethemachinebyputtingyourfoot
ontheground.
4. Donotusea grasscatcheronsteepslopes.
5. Donotmowonwetgrass.Reducedtractioncould
causesliding.
6. Donotshifttoneutralandcoastdownhill.Over-speed-
ingmaycausetheoperatortolosecontrolofthe
machineresultingin seriousinjuryordeath.
7. Donottow heavypullbehindattachments(e.g.loaded
dumpcart,lawnroller,etc.)on slopesgreaterthan
5 degrees.Whengoingdownhill,theextraweight
tendsto pushthetractorandmaycauseyoutoloose
control.(e.g.tractormayspeedup,brakingandsteer-
ingabilityarereduced,attachmentmayjack-knifeand
causetractortooverturn).
Towing:
1. Towonlywitha machinethathasa hitchdesignedfor
towing.Donotattachtowedequipmentexceptatthe
hitchpoint.
2. Followthemanufacturersrecommendationforweight
limitsfortowedequipmentandtowingon slopes.
3. Neverallowchildrenor othersin oron towedequip-
ment.
4. Onslopes,theweightof thetowedequipmentmay
causelossoftractionandlossofcontrol.
5. Travelslowlyandallowextradistancetostop.
6. Donotshifttoneutralandcoastdownhill.

Gas and Oil Fill-up

NOTE:Purchasegasolineinsmallquantities.Donotuse
gasolineleft overfromthepreviousseason,tominimize
gumdepositsin thefuelsystem.
• Thisengineiscertifiedtooperateon unleaded
gasoline.Forbestresults,fillthefueltankwithonly
clean,fresh,unleadedgasolinewitha pumpsticker
octaneratingof87or higher.Incountriesusingthe
Researchmethod,itshouldbe90 octaneminimum.
• Unleadedgasolineisrecommendedbecauseitleaves
lesscombustionchamberdepositsand reduces
harmfulexhaustemissions.Leadedgasolineisnot
recommendedandmustnotbe usedwhereexhaust
emissionsareregulated.
• Gasohol(upto 10%ethylalcohol,90%unleaded
gasolinebyvolume)isanapprovedfuel.Other
gasoline/alcoholblendsare notapproved.
• MethylTertiaryButylEther(MTBE)and unleaded
gasolineblends(uptoa maximumof 15%MTBEby
volume)areapprovedfuels.Othergasoline/ether

Steering the Tractor
Youri1000seriestractorisequippedwith aninnovative
steeringdesignwhichissomewhatdifferentfromthatof
thetraditionalsteeringwheeltypelawntractor.Turning
thesteeringwheelnotonlyturnsthefrontwheels,but
alsocontrolsthedrivelinkageofthetwo hydrotransmis-
sionsthatdrivethetractor.Thisfeatureallowsyouto
varythe radiusofturnsfroma normalwideturndownto
a zeroturn.Somepracticemaybe requiredtobecome
accustomedtothesteeringofyourtractor.Thesteering
worksasfollows:
° Thesteeringwheelturnsapproximatelytwo turnsstop
to stop.Withthecenterpositionbeingthestraight
aheadposition.
° Minorturnsofthesteeringwheelfromthecenter
position(up toapprox.100) willturnonlythefront
axlesand resultinwiderturns.
° Increasingtheturnofthesteeringwheel(beyond10°)
resultsin increasinglytighterturns.Asthesteering
mechanismturnsthefrontwheels,italsochanges
thepositionofthetransmissiondrivelinkageto slow
downtheinnerrearwheelintheturnandadjustthe
speedoftheouterwheelasnecessarytocomplete
thedesiredturn.Turnthesteeringwheelbacktothe
centerpositionastheturniscompleted.
NOTE:It isnotnecessarytoreleasethedrivepedal
whenmakinga turn.Thechangetothetransmission
linkageoccursregardlessofhowfarthedrivepedalis

. Neverattempttomulchifthelawnisdamp.Wetgrass
tendsto sticktothe undersideofthecuttingdeck
preventingpropermulchingoftheclippings.
. Donotattempttomulchmorethan1/3thetotalheight
ofthegrassor approximately1-1/2inches.Doingso
willcausetheclippingstoclumpup beneaththedeck
andnotbemulchedeffectively.
. Maintaina slowgroundspeedtoallowthegrass
clippingsmoretimetoeffectivelybe mulched.
. AlwayspositionthrottlecontrolleverintheFAST(rabbit)
positionandallowittoremaintherewhilemowing.Failing
tokeeptheengineatfullthrottleplacesstrainonthe
tractor'sengineanddoesnotallowthebladestoproperly
mulchgrass.

Adjusting the Seat
WARNING: After adjusting the seat

thedecktothe midheightposition(thirdor fourth
notch)usingthedecklift lever.Rotatebothbladesso
thattheyareperpendicularwiththetractorframe.
2. Measurethedistancefromtheoutsideoftheleftblade
tiptothegroundandthedistancefromtheoutsideof
therightbladetip totheground.Bothmeasurements
takenshouldbeequal.If they'renot,notewhetherthe
leftsideofthedeckisloweror higherand proceedto
thenextstep.
3. Workingfromtheleftsideofthetractor,loosen,butdo
notremove,thehexcapscrewontheleft deckhanger
