Server Administration
Introduction
11
1Introduction
This manual is written for the administrator of a MRS Server. First a short overview of
the server will be presented, following with a description of the individual components
as well as start and stop procedures of the server.
Next the administration of the database will be discussed along with all associated
tasks. These tasks comprise the installation and configuration of new users, security,
and other various administrative duties that occur within the daily operation.
Subsequently, an overview of the various MRS Services and their addressing will be
presented.
In the following the individual MRS components will be explained. Since it is used for
the central surveillance and configuration of the MRS Server, careful attention should
be given to those portions concerning the MRS Monitor.

Concepts

2 Concepts
2.1 MRS Structure
The MRS Kernel is built upon four components: Message Transfer Agent (MTA),
Database (Infostore), Extended Message Reporter Service (XMRSvc), and Name
Locator (NameLoc). Access to the kernel is through the various Access Protocol Lay-
ers (APLs) which implement the external protocols e.g. ISDN, SMTP, Exchange Gate-
way, and TCP/IP. The Access Protocol Layers thus allow access to the server over
various communication mediums. Access Protocol Layers are principally optional
components whose application and configuration will be discussed later.
With the exception of the Name Locator (organizes the communication in a distributed
system), all other components can be seen in the MRS Monitor.
2.1.1 Message Transfer Agent
The Message Transfer Agent processes all jobs that can be independently executed
from one another simultaneously. Only jobs whose chronological order is critical are
processed sequentially in separate threads.
Simultaneously processed tasks are:
●Routing of documents and dialogs
●Conversions
●Distribution list resolution
Sequentially processed are:
●Report assignments
●Line states
●Database access
2.1.2 Database
The Infostore is based on the database cTree. Journals, user, and charge information
are managed by the database. The database is so constructed, that address book syn-
chronization with other databases is possible e.g. MS Exchange.
Dialing numbers in the MRS Server are given a normalized representation. If a fax is
to be sent to the number +49-2404-12345, this address would have the MRS
Address form of NVS:FAXG3/49240412345. Since addresses are managed by the
appropriate APL, no outside dialing information is contained within.

2.1.3 Extended Message Reporter Service
This centralized service gathers all Log information from the various MRS compo-
nents. Monitor processes distributed over the network, can be logged-in with XMR-
Service giving various and dissimilar system reports.
In this way, special surveillance MRS Monitors can also be configured. On one MRS-
Monitor security information could be displayed while on another Monitor fax infor-
mation is shown etc.
2.1.4 Name Locator
'The Name Locator frees the Intertask-Communication from having to know which
task is being performed on what computer. The Name Locator runs in the background
on every computer which contains a working component of the MRS Sever, and dis-
seminates the names of these computers to other computers which contain compo-
nents of the MRS Server within the network.
2.2 MRS Addressing
The MRS Server uses the following addressing form which is independent of the pro-
tocol and target system structure.
NVS:NODE.CLASS/USER
or
NVS:NODE/USER
The first portion of the address (NVS:) is never modified since it characterizes the
syntax of the address type. In this way it is later possible to insert new address types.
The target network is described through the use of NODE. Typical nodes are FAXG3,
SMS, TCPIP, SMTP, LN etc.
Example:
NVS:FAXG3/491234567890
FAX G3 Subscriber +49-1234-567890.
NVS:EXCH/MAYER
Microsoft Exchange User MAYER.
NVS:SMTP/[email protected]

Through the optional entry CLASS, various accesses of a similar type within a net-
work node can be given. If a server is connected with seven logical fax lines to the net-
work, and the network to the public exchange, these seven logical fax lines could be
individually selected through the use of CLASS. If no entry for CLASS is given, the
router would decide through the use of internal evaluation tables, which access to the
network node is to be used. The entry USER corresponds to the local syntax of the net-
work. In the case of a fax this is the fax number in a normed form.
Example:
NVS:FAXG3.1/491234567890
FAX G3 member +49-1234-567890 over logical line (CLASS) 1.
NVS:FAXG3.2/491234567890
FAX G3 member +49-1234-567890 over logical line (CLASS) 2.
MRS Addresses always define a logical access to and from the MRS System. Access
Protocol Layers define the individual structure of a physical point of access to the net-
work.

Administrative Procedures

3 Administrative Procedures
3.1 Starting and Stopping the Server
There are various methods for starting and stopping the MRS Server. In most cases the
user sees none of this, since the server runs without any logged-in users and therefore
requires no display output.
The status of the server start can be continuously followed through the use of a previ-
ously started MRS Monitor. The following methods are also available and will be
described in more detail below:
●Start/Stop through the Start resp. Shutdown of the NT Server
●Start/Stop through installed Program icons resp. selection of these programs from
the Start menu
●Start/Stop through the Service Control Manager of Windows NT
●Start/Stop locally from the Commandline
●Start/Stop locally and remotely from the Commandline Interpreter with the utility
sc (part of the Windows NT Resource Kit).
During the installation, the program icons “Start MRS Server”and “Stop MRS
Server”were installed. These can be found in the Start Menu of Windows NT 4.0.
The second method is through the Service Control Manager. This is found under the
entry Settings. After starting Services all services and their status can be seen.
The service MRS Administrator (MRS) starts the complete MRS Server. Stopping a ser-
vice is accomplished by selecting the service from the list and subsequently selecting

Server Administration
Installation and Start of Individual Components
18
the Stop button. Through this action the server is shutdown. This method can also be
used for shutting down and restarting individual components.
In most cases the service MRS Administrator (MRS) has the Startup type Automatic.
With this setting the MRS Server is automatically started when the computer is started.
If this is not desired, the Startup type can be changed to Manual and the MRS Server
started “from hand”after the computer is started.
Every MRS Server component can be started or stopped from the Commandline Inter-
preter. The component name (found in parenthesis in the Service Control Manager) is
entered along with the command Start resp. Stop. To start or stop the MRS Server
the commands “MRS Start”or “MRS Stop”would be used. Locally, it is also possi-
ble with the NET commands. In this case, “net start <
Service
>”or “net stop
<
Service
>”would be entered.
All the methods mentioned thus far function only on the local computer (computer
where the MRS Server is installed). Starting and stopping the MRS Server is also pos-
sible from other computers within the network. This service is provided by the utility
sc. This utility is not included with the standard distribution of Windows NT, but con-
tained in the Windows NT Resource Kit. The acquisition of the Resource Kit is sug-
gested not only for this utility, but also for the useful knowledge contained within for
the execution of the system administrator’s duties.
This utility allows the management and querying of services from the Commandline
Interpreter for the local computer as well as other computers within the network. The
call for starting and stopping the MRS Server is as follows:
sc \\
Servername
start mrs
sc \\
Servername
stop mrs
The server name is the name of the computer in the Windows network, and is not
required when this utility is executed for services on the local computer.
3.2 Installation and Start of Individual Components
Almost all MRS components can be installed at a later time using the Setup program.
This is not possible for certain MRS SDK1test modules or newly developed modules
that were not included in the delivered Setup program. Installation instructions for
these modules through use of the Commandline Interpreter is as follows:
Every APL or kernel component can be installed with the call
Name
install
1. MRS Software Development Kit. Various individual components can be developed for the MRS
server with this kit.

from the Commandline. An attempt is made to incorporate meaningful default values,
but a complete configuration of the component should be subsequently performed
from the MRS Monitor. Several components e.g. the Exchange Gateway APL require
a greater expenditure and therefore should only be installed through the Setup pro-
gram.
Example: tcpapl install
So that these components are also started, the following command must be given in
the Commandline Interpreter
Name
start
or in the Service Control Manager through the selection of the service and subsequent
selection of the Start button. Usually, the Startup type “Manual”is entered during the
component installation.
Since components installed in this way are not started automatically by the MRS
Administrator, they have to be individually started by hand. If the automatic start of
these components is desired, the component must be inserted in the registry under the
Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\PP-COM\MRS\Services
in the REG_MULTI_SZ-Value Access Protocol Layer.
3.3 Stop and Deinstallation of Individual Components
In a likewise manner to that of the installation, individual components can also be
deinstalled from the Commandline Interpreter through the use of
Name
remove
Prior to its removal, the component should be shut down through the Service Control
Manager by selecting the component and subsequently the Stop button or from the
Commandline Interpreter with the command
Name
stop
3.4 Complete Deinstallation of the MRS Servers by Hand
Normally the deinstallation of the MRS Server occurs through the delivered MRS
Deinstallation Wizard. If the deinstallation is to be done by hand, the necessary steps
are as follows:
1. All MRS Server shared directories (Shares) must be given the status “Not Shared”
on the MRS Server where the kernel components are installed. These are normally
in the MRS installation directory unless they were changed during or after the

20
installation. This refers to the following directories (Sharename) for a complete
installation.
●Backup (MrsBackup$)
●Client (MrsClnt$)
●Folders (MrsFolders$)
●Monitor (MrsConfig$)
●PipeBuff (MrsXfer$)
●Userdata (MrsUserdata$)
2. All components, as written above, could be deinstalled with
Name
remove
The name of each component is found in the Service Control Manager in parenthe-
ses behind the full name of the component. All server components beginning with
the abbreviation MRS also have a full name describing the service.
3. The MRS installation directory and all sub-directories must be deleted. If during
the installation or at a later time directories in other locations of the file system
were installed, these should also be deleted.
4. Using the Registry Editor regedt32 the
Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PP-COM\MRS
must be deleted. If an Administrative Client was installed then the Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PP-COM\Aachen32
must also be deleted.
5. In the Value NullSessionPipes under the Key
