SAFETY
Any person using kayaks built and/or sold by Dagger is
personally responsible for determining that their
abilities are equal or superior to the conditions
encountered and exercising proper judgment in choice
of where and when to paddle.
Any person using Dagger kayaks assumes all risks and
takes complete responsibility for any and all
damages, or injuries, including death, which may
result from use of or participation in Dagger kayaks.
Consult your physician prior to beginning your
paddlesport training.
DON’T:
Never exceed your ability and assess how far andt
how long you can paddle or swim.
Never paddle alone.t
Never consume alcohol, drugs, or any othert
substance that may affect your coordination,
judgment, or ability when paddling.
Never paddle in flood conditions.t
Never allow minors to use the boat without adultt
supervision.
Avoid bracing yourself in the kayak in such a way thatt
you have to release any outfitting to escape.
Do not impair entry or exit access to the kayak whent
installing additional outfitting.
DO:
Wear a Coast Guard approved personal flotationt
device (PFD).
Wear a helmet when paddling whitewater or int
the ocean.
Get paddlesports instruction from a licensed ort
certified instructor.
Dress appropriately for weather conditions; coldt
water and/or weather can result in hypothermia.
Check your equipment prior to each use for signst
of wear or failure.
Scout unfamiliar waters. If necessary, paddle tot
shore and carry your boat past uncertain areas.
Stay aware of appropriate river water levels, tidalt
changes, dangerous currents, and weather changes.
Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for uset
and outfitting of your kayak.
Leave your paddling location and agenda witht
someone at home before departing.
Obtain certified first aid and rescue training andt
carry first aid and rescue equipment.
Always use supplemental flotation.tWARNING:
Kayaking can be hazardous with potential risk of
serious injury and even death.

TRANSPORTATION
Improper transportation technique is one of the main
causes of kayak damage. The following tips will help
you safely transport your kayak and minimize potential
hull damage.
It is also important to not keep kayaks tied tightly
to your vehicle in direct sunlight. This could cause
deformation of the hull over time.
ROOF RACK
A crossbar roof rack (or “sports rack”) for your vehicle
with the kayak positioned on its side is the best method
of transporting a kayak. It should be lashed down
at each crossbar, as well as at the bow and stern to
each end of the vehicle. Generally, kayaks can also be
transported on their edge safely using kayak stackers.
Kayak cradles are recommended for boats being
transported “flat” to lessen chances of deformation
from being lashed too tightly to the bars. It is also
recommended that the kayak be transported upside
down as it is more aerodynamic and will prevent water
from filling the cockpit during rain.
USING FOAM BLOCK RACKS
Foam block racks can be used for short distances
or lower speed transportation. They should be wide
enough for adequate support, as well. Use extra caution
with foam blocks as they are not as secure as cross-bar
racks. Foam blocks also make it essential to tie off the
bow and stern of the kayaks directly to the vehicle.
AIR TRAVEL
Many airlines do not allow kayaks to be transported
on the plane when you travel by air. Contact your air
carrier well in advance of your trip to see if they allow
you to check a whitewater kayak and how much they
charge. You should invest in a kayak travel bag if you do
transport a kayak by air.
IMPORTANT:
It is recommended to always stop shortly after
the start of your trip to make sure all fittings and
connections are secure and that the kayak will not
shift during travel.
CAUTION:
TRAVELING IN INCLEMENT WEATHER:
Position kayak upside down if possible when
inclement weather is threatening. A kayak can fill
with water when it rains and become dangerous to
your vehicle or others as it becomes heavy. Use a
portage cover to seal the cockpit if a “bottom up”
position is not possible. Be sure to periodically
check your straps to make sure they have not
stretched while wet.

7
STORAGE
SHORT TERM STORAGE
Be sure to empty the kayak of all water. The kayak may
be stored on its side or in a vertical position temporarily.
Storage in these positions for an extended period of
time could cause flattening or deformation in the side of
the hull.
LONG TERM STORAGE
In addition to emptying all water out, you should clean
the kayak by rinsing with freshwater. Store out of direct
sunlight and indoors, if possible. UV exposure can
shorten the lifespan of any kayak and can degrade its
finish. Kayaks can be stored slung on their sides via web
straps, positioned 1/3 of the way along the hull (as
shown). Be sure to not leave straps or ropes tightly
wound around the hull for extended periods of time as
it may cause deformation.
Your kayak can also be stored hull up (as shown) on
parallel bars with weight supported evenly throughout
its length. For large cockpit (recreational) boats, position
the bars so that the cockpit coaming rests on the bars.
For smaller cockpit kayaks, position bars so that they
contact the deck between the cockpit and any hatches.
CAUTION:
Do not suspend your kayak by using the grab
loops at either end of the boat. This can cause the
hull to distort over time.

8
CARE & MAINTENANCE
ROTOMOLDED KAYAK CARE
Our “roto” kayaks are made of high-density linear
polyethylene, which is virtually maintenance free. A
minimal amount of care in storage and transporting
will help the kayak maintain a like-new condition for
many years.
Polyethylene will become more flexible when in warm
conditions such as a hot, sunny day. It is possible for a
kayak strapped tightly to a roof rack for a series of days
to temporarily deform at the weight bearing points. Use
a rigid bar sport rack in addition to a “kayak cradle” to
disperse the weight.
WHITEWATER KAYAK CARE
Whitewater kayaks are built to withstand more
aggressive use than recreation or touring models.
However, a certain amount of impact and abrasion
damage is to be expected due to the nature of
whitewater paddling. If you notice excessive wear or
gouging on the hull you should consider altering your
paddling technique to prolong the life of your kayak.
Continual exposure to abrasion can roughen the hull
surface. Scratching is often cosmetic or superficial and
requires no repair.
It is important to be able to determine when damage is
cosmetic or extends to impacting the structure of the
hull. Impacts are much more likely than scratches to
result in structural damage. Inspect your hull after
suffering a collision.
As durable as it is, polyethylene is not indestructible.
However, should the worst happen, it is repairable;
simply contact your local Dagger dealer.
Next to damage during use, the greatest threat to the
kayak is degradation due to UV exposure. The kayak
should be stored out of direct sunlight, as the polyethylene
will become more flexible in warm conditions.
CLEANING
Usually, a quick rinse of fresh water is all that is necessary
to keep your hull clean and functioning in good order.
This is very important after paddling in salt water,
especially if your boat is outfitted with a rudder system.
Be sure to thoroughly rinse the rudder, rudder cables,
and footbraces with fresh water to remove salt residue.
Superficial scratches may occur, but can be removed or
reduced by use of a marine boat polish designed for
polyethylene hulls. Sanding or use of an abrasive
rubbing compound is not recommended.
To keep your kayak shining and minimize the long-term
degradation caused by UV exposure, use an ultraviolet
protectant such as 303 Aerospace Protectant, available
at your local Dagger dealer.
WARNING:
Avoid dragging kayak across the ground to
prolong its life and maintain its look and
performance. Two people, utilizing the carrying
handles, is the best way to transport a longer
kayak. Alternately, you can transport using a
kayak cart, available at your dealer.

9
ACCESSORIES
ESSENTIALS CHECKLIST:
PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD)
A USCG approved, comfortable and secure fitting PFD
should be worn at all times. Shorter PFDs are available
that are ideal for kayak paddling.
WHITEWATER ESSENTIALS CHECKLIST:
In addition to the essentials needed for all paddlesports,
whitewater kayaking requires an additional level of
protective gear.
HELMET
You should always wear an appropriate helmet while
paddling whitewater.
GET MORE ACCESSORIES
To find out about many more accessories available for
your Dagger kayak, visit www.harmonygear.com.
PADDLE
Choosing a paddle is almost as important as your
choice of boat. Blade shape, length, weight, and
material all offer different experiences. It is also strongly
recommended that you have a spare paddle that can be
easily stowed on your deck.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT
USCG regulations require an audible signal device (a
horn or whistle) to be used in all watercraft. In addition,
for recreational and touring kayaks, it is recommended
that all paddlers carry a bilge pump (to drain water from
the kayak), and a paddle float. Be sure to secure training
in the operation of a paddlefloat.
PERSONAL GEAR
Items you should keep with you on every trip include:
Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, plenty of drinking water,
insect repellent, compass, waterproof flashlight,
matches or lighter, pocket knife, and a first aid kit.
DRY BAG
Ultra-light and water-resistant storage for an extra level
of protection and accessibility for gear.
SPRAYSKIRT
A sprayskirt is worn by the paddler to create a
watertight seal, preventing the cockpit from filling up
with water You should always paddle with a spray skirt
in place to facilitate rolling and prevent the kayak from
getting swamped.
WHITEWATER PADDLE
Typically, a whitewater paddle will be shorter than the
average touring paddle and have a larger blade face.
Your local Dagger dealer should be able to help you
decide on a paddle to suit your needs. It is always a
good idea to carry a backup paddle that can be broken
down to fit in the stern of your kayak.
FLOTATION BAGS
If you are forced to exit your kayak and it becomes
swamped recovery becomes more difficult. By installing
inflatable float bags you can reduce the volume of
water a swamped kayak will take on. Typical installation
on a kayak will be two bags, one on either side of the
stern pillar.
THROW BAG
In the event of an emergency while on the water, a
throw bag can help you reach a swimmer or help free
your kayak. A throwbag should have a minimum of 50
feet of cord.
