Your Dell XPS 18 package includes the following accessories:
Power adapter and cable• - Provides power to your computer
and charges the battery.
USB LAN dongle• - Connects your computer to a RJ45 connector
via the USB 3.0 port.
Dock (included with selected models)• - Allows your computer to
stand upright with adjustable viewing angles and battery charging
capabilities.

Setting Up Your Dell XPS 18
This section provides information about setting up your XPS 18 for first
use.
WARNING: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, read
the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional
best practices information, see

Getting Your Computer Ready for Use
Connect the AC power adapter and power cable
Connect the supplied power cable into the supplied power1
adapter.

Charging the computer
CAUTION: Charge the battery in an environmental temperature between
0°C and 35°C.
CAUTION: Use only the supplied power adapter and power cable
to charge your computer. Using unauthorized power adapters or
powercables may cause severe damage to your computer.
NOTE: This computer CANNOT be charged through a USB cable. Use the
supplied charger for charging the computer.
NOTE: The battery is not fully charged when first unpacked.
Connect the power adapter to the DC port on the computer.1
Connect the power adapter into an electrical outlet and charge2
the computer until the battery is fully charged.
NOTE: The computer battery requires about 4 - 5 hours to fully charge.

You can check the computer’s power/battery status from:
Battery-charge light located on the side of the computer•
Battery with no AC adapter connected or AC/Battery is fully charged
LED behavior Description
Solid white color Computer is ON
Breathing white color (slow blinking) Computer is on sleep mode
Fast blinking amber color Low battery
Light is o Computer is OFF
AC adapter is connected and battery is charging
LED behavior Description
Solid amber color Computer is ON
Breathing amber color (slow blinking) Computer is on sleep mode

Battery icon displayed on the screen:•
Battery icon Description
Battery is fully charged
Battery is charging with AC.
Your computer is running on battery
power and the battery is discharging.
Your computer is plugged in, and
either no battery is detected, or the
battery isn’t working correctly.
Battery is at low level.
Battery is at critical level.
NOTE: You can check exact battery charge level by booting to the
operating system.

Turning On Your Computer
NOTE: Use this computer in an ambient temperature between 0°C and
35°C.
Press and hold the1 Power and Sleep/Wake button for at
least 3 seconds.
If the lock screen image is displayed, swipe your finger from the2
bottom of the display to switch to the login screen, and then enter
password to log in to Windows.
The computer is ready for use when the Windows Start screen is
displayed.
NOTE: If the login screen is not enabled in Windows 8, you will be taken
directly from the lock screen to the Start screen.
NOTE: The lock screen is only displayed when returning from a sleep
state.

Turning O Your Computer
Using power button:•
Press and hold the Power and Sleep/Wake button for at
least 4 seconds to turn o the computer.
Using Charms:•
Swipe from the right edge of the display to access Charms.1
Touch2 Settings →Power →Shut down to turn o the
computer.
Turning O the Screen
Using power button:•
Press the Power and Sleep/Wake button to turn o the
screen.
Using Charms:•
Swipe from the right edge of the display to access Charms.1
Touch2 Settings →Power →Sleep to turn o the screen.
NOTE: If your computer is in a sleep state (computer is on, but screen is
o), press the Power and Sleep/Wake button or Windows button
once to turn on the screen.

Inserting an SD card
Make sure the orientation of the SD card is correct.1
Push the slot cover down.2
Push the SD card into the slot until it is firmly in place.3
For more information on removing the SD card, see Remove the SD
card.

Screen Orientation
For optimal viewing experience, the screen orientation changes
automatically to portrait or landscape format depending on the
computer’s orientation.
NOTE: Some applications may not support automatic screen rotation to
portrait or landscape format.
How to lock the screen orientation
Swipe from the right edge of the display to access Charms.1
Touch2 Settings →Screen .
Touch toggle3 to lock the screen orientation, or touch toggle
to unlock the screen orientation.
Gestures
Your computer has a multi-touch display. You can touch the screen to
operate the computer.
NOTE: All touchscreen actions described throughout this manual can
also be done using a mouse/keyboard.
Finger Gestures Allows you to:
Touch
Tap gently on the screen with your
fingertip.
Select items on the screen•
including options, entries, images,
and icons.
Start applications.•
Touch buttons on the screen.•
Input text using the on-screen•
keyboard.

horizontal direction on the screen.
Scroll through the Start screen,•
web pages, lists, entries, photos,
contacts, and so on.
Close an app. (Swipe the app to•
the bottom of the display.)
Zoom out
Touch the display with two fingers
and then move the fingers closer.
Reduce the view of an image or web
page.
Zoom in
Touch the display with two fingers
and then move the fingers apart.
Enlarge the view of an image or web
page.

Finger Gestures Allows you to:
Rotate
Touch the display with two or more
fingers and then move the fingers in a
clockwise or counter-clockwise arc.
Rotate an object by 90 degrees.
