Removing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly


1. Follow the procedures in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Close the display and turn the computer upside down.

3. Loosen the five captive screws securing the bottom of the base assembly.

4. Pry up on the recess near the slender edge where indicated and slide the bottom of the base assembly toward the left side of the computer, and lift it
up.

1. Slide in the bottom of the base assembly to the left of the computer, hold it down, and snap it into place.

2. Tighten the captive screws, making sure the bottom of the base assembly is snapped down.

3. Follow the procedures in After Working on Your Computer.

1. Follow the procedures in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Close the display and turn the computer upside down.

3. Remove the single M2.5 x 8-mm screw securing the bottom of the base assembly.

4. Slide the bottom of the base assembly toward the front of the computer, and lift it up.

1. Slide the bottom of the base assembly toward the back of the computer until it is fully seated.

2. Replace the single M2.5 x 8-mm screw securing the bottom of the base assembly.


After Working on Your Computer
This document provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that:
lYou have performed the steps in Before Working on Your Computer.
lYou have read the safety information that shipped with your computer.
lWhen replacing a component, you have already removed the original, if installed.
Recommended Tools
The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
lSmall flat-blade screwdriver
lPhillips screwdriver
lSmall plastic scribe
lFlash BIOS update (see the Dell Support website at support.dell.com)
Before Working on Your Computer
Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help ensure your own personal safety.


1. Ensure that the work surface is flat and clean to prevent the computer cover from being scratched.

2. Shut down your computer.
lIn Microsoft®Windows®XP, click Start®Shutdown®Shutdown.
lIn Microsoft Windows Vista®, click Start , click the arrow icon, and then click Shut Down to turn off your computer.

3. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

4. Disconnect any telephone or network cables from the computer.

5. Disconnect any external devices and remove any installed cards before working on your computer:
lTo remove any installed cards, such as an ExpressCard, see the Dell™TechnologyGuide on your computer or at support.dell.com.
NOTE: The color of your computer and certain components may appear differently than shown in this document.
CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions that shipped with your computer. For additional

NOTICE: Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer. Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not
covered by your warranty.
NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface, such
as a connector on the back of the computer.
NOTICE: Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal
mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a processor by its edges, not by its pins.
NOTICE: When disconnecting a cable, pull on the cable's connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. For cable connectors with locking
tabs, press inward on the locking tabs to release the connector. When connecting a cable, ensure that the connectors are correctly oriented and
aligned to avoid damage to the connector and/or the connector's pins.
NOTE: Ensure that the computer is off and not in a power management mode. If you cannot shut down the computer using the operating system,
press and hold the power button for 4 seconds.
NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer, and then unplug it from the network wall jack.
NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you service the computer.

lTo undock from a docking station, see the E-Port User's Guide or the E-Port Plus User's Guide on support.dell.com.
lTo remove a battery slice, see the setup guide that shipped with your battery slice or on support.dell.com.

6. Turn the computer upside down.

7. Slide the battery latch release to the right (open position). You may need to hold the latch release in the open position while removing the battery.

8. Slide the battery out of the battery bay.

9. Turn the computer top-side up, open the display, and press the power button to ground the system board.
After Working on Your Computer

1. Connect any external devices, such as a port replicator, battery slice, or cool slice, and replace any cards, such as an ExpressCard or SD memory card.

2. Connect any telephone or network cables to your computer.

3. Replace the battery. Slide the battery into the battery bay until it clicks into place.

4. Connect your computer and all attached devices to their electrical outlets.

5. Turn on your computer.

Flashing the BIOS From a CD
Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive
If a BIOS-update program media, such as a CD, is provided with a new system board, flash the BIOS from the media. If you do not have a BIOS-update
program media, see Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive.
Flashing the BIOS From a CD

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is connected to an electrical outlet and that the main battery is installed properly.

2. Start your computer.

3. Press the eject button at the front of the optical drive to open the drive tray.

4. Place the BIOS-update CD in the center of the drive tray, then gently push to close the tray.

5. Restart the computer.

6. When the DELL logo appears, press <F12> immediately.
If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft®Windows®desktop, then shut down your
computer and try again.

7. At the Boot Device Menu, use the up-and down-arrow keys or press the appropriate number on the keyboard to highlight CD-ROM, and then press
<Enter>.

8. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen. The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS. When the flash update is complete, the
computer automatically reboots.

9. Remove the flash BIOS update program CD from the drive.
Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive

1. Ensure that the AC adapter is connected to an electrical outlet, that the main battery is properly installed, and that a network cable is attached.

2. Start the computer.

3. Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support.dell.com.

4. Click Download Now to download the file.

5. If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears, click Yes, I Accept this Agreement.

6. In the File Download window, click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.

7. In the Save In window, click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save.
NOTICE: Connect the AC adapter to an electrical outlet that is known to be working properly to prevent a loss of power. Failure to do so may cause
system damage.
NOTE: Keyboard failure may result when a key on the keyboard is held down for extended periods of time. To avoid possible keyboard failure,
press and release <F12> in even intervals until the Boot Device Menu appears.
NOTE: The Quickboot feature changes the boot sequence for the current boot only. Upon restart, the computer boots according to the boot
sequence specified in system setup.
NOTICE: Do not interrupt this process once it begins. Doing so may cause system damage.
NOTICE: Connect the AC adapter to an electrical outlet that is known to be working properly to prevent a loss of power. Failure to do so may cause
system damage.

The file downloads to your desktop.

8. Click Close if the Download Complete window appears.
The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file.

9. Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.


4. Lift the coin-cell battery from the system board.

2. Position the coin-cell battery on the system board.

Removing the Processor Module


1. Follow the instructions in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Remove the bottom of the base assembly (see Removing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly or Replacing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly).

3. Remove the fan (see Removing the Fan).

4. Remove the processor heat sink (see Removing the Processor Heat Sink).

5. To loosen the ZIF socket, use a small, flat-blade screwdriver and rotate the ZIF-socket cam screw counterclockwise until it comes to the cam stop.

6. Lift the processor module from the ZIF socket.
Replacing the Processor Module


1. Align the pin-1 corner of the processor module with the pin-1 corner of the ZIF socket, then insert the processor module.

NOTICE: To avoid damage to the processor, hold the screwdriver so that it is perpendicular to the processor when turning the cam screw.

NOTICE: To ensure maximum cooling for the processor, do not touch the heat transfer areas on the processor heat sink. The oils in your skin can
reduce the heat transfer capability of the thermal pads.
NOTICE: When removing the processor module, pull the module straight up. Be careful not to bend the pins on the processor module.

NOTICE: Do not touch the processor die. Press and hold the processor down on the substrate on which the die is mounted while turning the cam screw
to prevent intermittent contact between the cam screw and processor.
NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor module. Seating the processor module properly in the ZIF
socket does not require force. A processor module that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the
microprocessor and ZIF socket.
NOTE: If you are installing a new processor, you receive a new processor heat sink, which will include an affixed thermal pad, or you will receive a new
thermal pad along with a tech sheet to illustrate proper installation.
NOTE: This procedure assumes that you have completed the removal procedure first.

When the processor module is properly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the module are higher than the
others, the module is not seated properly.

2. Tighten the ZIF socket by turning the cam screw clockwise to secure the processor module to the system board.

3. Replace the processor heat sink (see Replacing the Processor Heat Sink).

4. Replace the fan (see Replacing the Fan).

5. Replace the bottom of the base assembly (see Replacing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly or Replacing the E5500 Bottom of the Base Assembly).

6. Follow the procedures in After Working on Your Computer.

1. Follow the instructions in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Remove the bottom of the base assembly (see Removing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly or Removing the E5500 Bottom of the Base
Assembly).

3. Remove the fan (see Removing the Fan).

4. In sequential order, loosen the four numbered captive screws that secure the processor heat sink to the system board.

5. Loosen the remaining captive screw that secures the processor heat sink to the system board and carefully lift it out of the computer.

1. Line up and secure the processor heat sink with the screw closest to the front of the computer.


Removing the E5400 Display Assembly


1. Follow the instructions in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Remove the bottom of the base assembly (see Removing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly).

3. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover).

4. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

5. Remove the display cable from the system board by pulling on the blue tab next to the display cable connector.

6. Carefully remove the display cable by moving it away from the metal and plastic cable guide tabs.

7. Turn the computer over. Disconnect the antenna cables from their cards and remove them by moving them out of the cable guides on the bottom of the
computer.

8. Slide the antenna cables through the hole in the palm rest.

9. Remove the antenna cables from the cable guides on the top of the computer.

10. Remove the four M2.5 x 5-mm screws (two per hinge) on the top of the computer that secure the metal hinges.

11. Remove the two M2.5 x 8-mm screws that secure the hinges located on the bottom of the computer.

12. Lift the display and hinge assembly out of the computer.

Replacing the E5400 Display Assembly


1. Align the display hinges with the holes in the base of the computer, then lower the display into place.

2. Replace the two M2.5 x 8-mmscrewsonthebottomandthefourM2.5x5-mm screws (two per hinge) in the top of the computer.

3. Connect the display cable to the system board.

4. Slide the antenna cables through the hole in the palm rest and the base of the computer.

5. Insert the antenna cables into the cable guides where they were originally placed.

Removing the E5400 Display Bezel


1. Follow the instructions in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover).

5. Starting at the middle bottom of the display panel, use your fingers to separate the bezel from the top cover, then lift the inside edges to separate the
remainder of the bezel.

1. Starting at any corner, use your fingers to gently snap the bezel into place to secure it to the top cover.


5. Close the display and turn the computer over.

Replacing the E5400 Display Inverter


1. Connect the two display inverter connectors to the display inverter.

2. Replace the M2.5 x 5-mm screw that secures the display inverter.

3. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the E5400 Display Bezel).

4. Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the E5400 Display Assembly).

5. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).

6. Replace the hinge cover (see Replacing the Hinge Cover).

7. Close the display and turn the computer over.

8. Replace the bottom of the base assembly (see Replacing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly).

9. Follow the procedures in After Working on Your Computer.
E5400 Display Panel

Removing the E5400 Display Panel


1. Follow the instructions in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover).

3. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

4. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the E5400 Display Assembly).

5. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the E5400 Display Bezel).

6. Remove the display inverter (see Removing the E5400 Display Inverter).

7. Remove the eight M2 x 3-mm screws (four on each side of the display panel) from the display hinge panels.

8. Lift the display panel out of the top cover.

Replacing the E5400 Display Panel


1. Replace the eight M2 x 3-mm screws (four on each side of the display panel) to secure the display panel to the display hinge panels.

2. Position the display panel assembly in the top cover.

3. Replace the display inverter (see Replacing the E5400 Display Inverter).

4. Replace the display bezel (see Replacing the E5400 Display Bezel).

5. Replace the display assembly (see Replacing the E5400 Display Assembly).

6. Replace the keyboard (see Replacing the Keyboard).

7. Replace the hinge cover (see Replacing the Hinge Cover).

8. Close the display and turn the computer over.

9. Replace the bottom of the base assembly (see Replacing the E5400 Bottom of the Base Assembly).

10. Follow the procedures in After Working on Your Computer.
E5400 Display Cable

Removing the E5400 Display Cable


1. Follow the instructions in Before Working on Your Computer.

2. Remove the hinge cover (see Removing the Hinge Cover).

3. Remove the keyboard (see Removing the Keyboard).

4. Remove the four M2.5 x 5-mm screws from the display hinges.

5. Remove the display assembly (see Removing the E5400 Display Assembly).

6. Remove the display bezel (see Removing the E5400 Display Bezel).

7. Remove the display inverter (see Removing the E5400 Display Inverter).

8. Remove the display panel (see Removing the E5400 Display Panel).

9. Disconnect the display cable from the connector on the back of the display panel.
