Replacement Instructions
ThisdocumentshowsyouhowtoreplaceapermanentlyfailedDSS200internalharddrive
withanewdrive.Pleasereadalltheinstructionsbeforeyoubegin.Thedrivereplacement
procedure(Section 1)takesapproximately20minutes.Afterfollowingtheinstructionsin
theRAIDrebuildprocedure(Section 2),thesystemcantakeupto10hourstocompletethe
rebuildprocess.
Beforeyoubegin,besureyouhavethefollowing:
• Phillipsscrewdriver
•Harddrivereplacementkit(DSS200HD‐SPK)withharddrive(DPN8702640)
IfoneoftheDSS200’sinternalharddrivesfails,itscorrespondingfront‐panelLEDturns
fromgreentored,asshownintheexampleinFigure 1.

Ifadrivefailswhileashowisrunning,theshowcontinuestorunwithoutinterruption.If
onedrivefails,noinformationislost.Ifaseconddrivefailsbeforeyoureplacethefirst
faileddrive,allinformationislost(andanyshowinprogressstopsrunning).Forthis
reason,youshouldorreplaceafaileddriveassoonaspossible.

1 Replacing a DSS200 Drive
ToreplaceaDSS200internalharddrive:
1. Notethefront‐paneldrivethatneedsreplacement,indicatedbyitsredLED.
2. Removethefront‐panelcoverbyplacingafingeronthecover’sindentedarea(inthe
upper‐rightcorner),whilepressinginward(totheleft)andgentlypullingthecover
outofthefrontpanel(seeFigure 2).

3. Pressthefaileddrive’sredreleasebuttontoextendthedrivetrayhandle,thenusethe
handletopullthedrivetrayoutoftheDSS200chassis,asshowninFigure 3.

4. Placethedrivetrayonaflat,stablesurfacesuchasadesk,table,orworkbench.
5. UseaPhillipsscrewdrivertoremovethesixscrewssecuringthefaileddrivetothe
drivetray,thenliftthedriveoutofthetray,asshowninFigure 4.

6. Slidethereplacementdriveintothetraywiththeprintedcircuitboardfacingdown,
asshowninFigure 4.
Youcanreplaceadrivewithahigher‐capacityunit,butnotwithalower‐capacityunit.
7. Carefullyalignthemountingholesonthedriveandthetray.
Makesurethebottomofthedriveandthebottomofthetrayareflush.
8. UseaPhillipsscrewdrivertosecurethedrivetothedrivetrayusingallsixscrewsyou
removedinstep4.

9. Slidethedrivetrayintothechassis,pressingdownonitshandleuntilitsnapsinto
place.

10. Replacethefront‐panelcover:
•Lineupthetwopinsonthecover’sleftsidewiththeirrespectiveholesonthe
frontpanel,theninsertthepinsintheholes.
•Placeafingeronthecover’srightindent,pressinwardtodepressthetwopins,
lineupthepinswiththeirrespectiveholes,thenreleaseyourfingertoinsertthe
pinsandsnapthecoverinplace(seeFigure 7).

TheDSS200musthavefourinternaldrivesinstalledbeforeyoucanrunaRAIDrebuild
operation.Thesystempartitionslargerdrivestothesamesizeastheexistinginternal
drives.Therebuildprocesscantakeupto10hours,sobesurenoshowisscheduled,and
nocontentorlicensesareloadingduringthistime(ifpossible,rebuildinthemorningor
overnight).TorebuildtheDSS200RAIDwithareplacementdrive:
1. PlacetheDSS200inanidlestatebystoppingplaybackofanyshows,andwaitingfor
thecompletionofanyfiletransfersorotheroperations.
2. BesureamonitorandkeyboardareconnectedtotheDSS200,thenreconnectthe
power.
3. Ignoretheinitialprompttopress<Alt>+<3>.
4. WhenthesystemrecognizestheRAIDdrives,asshownintheexampleinFigure 8,
press<Alt>+<3>.

5. Pressanykeytocontinue.
Typically,thesystemfindsthereplacementdriveunderAvailable Drives and
showsthedegradedarrayunderExportable Units,asshownintheexamplein
Figure 10.Ifnecessary,usetheup/downarrowkeysonthekeyboardtohighlightPort
x (x=portnumberofthedriveyou’rerebuilding),thenpressthespacebartodisplay
anasterisk(*).

6. Usetheup/downarrowkeysonthekeyboardtohighlighttheExportable Units
(Unit 0) line,thenpressthespacebartodisplayanasterisk(*).
7. Usethe<Tab>keytomovetotheMaintain Unitbutton,thenpress<Enter>to
displaytheMaintainpop‐upmenu,asshowninFigure 11.

10. Press<F8>todisplayafinalwarningmessage,indicatingthattherebuildprocesswill
destroyanyexistingdataonthereplacementdrive,asshowninFigure 14.

11. Press<Y>tosavetheconfiguration.
12. Rebootthesystem.ThescreenblanksandtheDSS200beginsitsnormalbootprocess
usingthethreefunctioninginternaldrives.
TheinternaldrivesbeginrebuildingautomaticallyafewminutesaftertheDSS200
bootsup.Whilerebuilding,thefaileddrive’sLEDflashesalternatelyinredandyellow.
Thisisnormalanddoesnotindicateaproblem.Whentherebuildingprocessis
completed,thefaileddrive’sLEDsstopflashing,andturnsgreen.
Note: Onsomesmallerkeyboards,youmayneedtopress<FLock>toenablethe<F8>
functionforthedual‐usekeys.
