SafeKareTM
Alzheimer’s disease or different forms of Dementia can affect all who have to deal
with the care of individual family members stricken with this unfortunate condition.
A major problem in providing home care for patients, is knowing that the patient is
within the caregiving control area. All too often, for whatever reason, the patient
will leave the control area without the caregiver’s knowledge. This can be a
dangerous situation for the patient, as well as a frustrating problem for the
caregiver.
DT Communications Inc. has developed a simple method of alerting a busy
caregiver whenever the patient leaves a defined control area.
Our company has designed a unit that can be used both inside and outside the
home or caregiving facility. The unit will alert the caregiver if the patient leaves or
moves outside the range of the SafeKare™system.

Congratulations on the purchase of your SafeKare™Caregiver Assistant. This
information sheet will guide you through the Quick Start setup and operation of your
SafeKare™system. Refer to your User’s Manual for details on setting up and
operating the caregiver system.
“DO NOT” power on the Caregiver Receiver CRU101A until the
battery has been charged. See Section 5 of the user’s manual for
help if necessary.

1.1 Unpacking the System Components
Unpack the box containing your SafeKare™system. Ensure that all items are present and
accounted for. Check your packing list to see what items were included in your system. The
packing list for a basic system is shown below.
If a part of the system you ordered is missing, consult the User’s Manual for instructions on
contacting the company.

Before your SafeKare system is used, the battery in the caregiver receiver must be
fully charged.
The locations of the switches, indicators, and power jack, for the CRU101A receiver, are
shown in Figure 1. Become familiar with each function location.
1.2 Charging the Caregiver Receiver
Plug the AC adapter into the wall, and then plug the other end into the caregiver receiver.
See Figure 2 for reference.
A full charge will be reached in approximately 6-8 hours. The unit will not be damaged if left
charging for longer than 8 hours.
After the caregiver receiver has been charged, the receiver is ready for use.

1.3 Unpacking the Badge/Fob
Remove the badge or fob from the metal case.
! Do not dispose of this metal box. It may be needed to store or
ship the fob or badge.

1.4 Fob Option: Activating the Patient Fob
Place the patient fob FOB101A face down on a flat table like surface. Remove the screw
located in the center of the fob and remove the cover. See Figure 3.

The fob battery sits on the backside of the circuit board. Remove the battery from the
protective plastic pouch that came in your kit. Insert the battery as shown in Figure 4. Note,
the battery must be placed into the holder with the minus (-) side of the battery against the
circuit board. The plus (+) side of the battery faces away from the circuit board. Replace
the circuit board after the battery is installed. Replace the cover and screw the back
together. The fob is now ready to use.

The patient badge comes with a preinstalled
battery. The battery has not been factory
activated in order to preserve battery life. On
the backside of the badge, locate the circle
about ½ inches in diameter with the inscription
START located near the middle of the badge.
Hold the badge firmly with one hand and with
the other hand use a finger to press the circle
firmly for 6 to 7 seconds. The badge should
now be active and ready for use

1.6 System Learn Mode
Before the caregiver receiver can operate with the patient badge or fob, it must first learn
the badge or fob ID code. Place the badge or fob 2 – 3 feet away from the caregiver
receiver. Refer to figure 6. Turn on the caregiver receiver (refer to figure 1). Wait for
receiver to initialize, indicated when the two LED’s stop flashing. Locate the “Reset-Learn”
button on the caregiver receiver. Hold caregiver receiver in the upright position and press
down on the ‘Reset/Learn” button switch. Hold the button down until an audible beep is
heard from the caregiver receiver. Within 3 to 15 seconds a second audible sound (a long
beep) should be heard. This indicates the receiver has learned the badge/fob code. If the
receiver starts to alarm, repeat the learn function. If the alarm condition continues, consult
the Trouble shooting section of the User’s Manual

2 Using the SafeKare Caregiver System
A detailed description of using the CRU101A system is described in the User’s Manual. Refer
to the User’s Manual if you have any problems using the “Quick Start User Guide.” A short
system check of the receiver operating at different range settings is described in the next
section. For a detailed description see Section 6 of the User’s Manual. Note the locations
where the receiver starts to alarm as you move away from the badge or fob. This will be an
indication of how the unit will operate in your home environment.
2.1 Checking the System Range
Refer to Figure 1 for the following instructions. Turn the caregiver receiver on, and place the
badge or fob unit on a table or similar object. Set the switch located on the side of the
receiver to the “S” position (short range setting).
Walk very slowly away from the badge or fob and record the distance at which the caregiver
receiver begins to alarm (a short beep, followed by a continuous beep 12 seconds after the
short beep).
Switch the receiver to the “M” position (medium range setting). The beeping should stop
within 12 to 15 seconds. Continue moving
slowly
away from the badge or fob. Again, record
the distance at which the caregiver receiver begins to alarm (a short beep).
Switch the receiver range to the “L” position (long range setting). The beeping should stop
in about 12 to 15 seconds. Continue walking
slowly
away from the fob. Again, record the
distance at which the receiver alarms, a short “beep” followed by a “continuous beeping”
after 12 seconds. The receiver is now in full alarm mode.

Walk back towards the badge/fob unit. The receiver should stop alarming when you are
approximately 50 feet away from the badge or fob.
It is important to move slowly during the test. The unit responds within a 12
second time period. If you move to quickly, you will not be able to get an
accurate measurement of the operating distance in your house or facility. The 12
second time delay is a requirement placed on the system by the FCC, but in a
practical sense, this delay cuts down on the number of receiver false alarms. This
time delay will not degrade the performance of the SafeKareTM System.

2.2 Placing the Badge or Fob Unit on the Patient
The range of the patient badge/fob is affected by how the patient fob or badge is worn. An
example of the various ways the badge or fob can be worn is shown in Figure 8. Note that
the badge or fob unit is always shown in the hanging position. Consult the User’s Manual for
more details.

After completing the range check, the caregiver unit is ready to use. To begin, it is
suggested that the unit be switched to the “M” (medium range setting). After you have
become familiar with using the caregiver system, you can make adjustments to suit your
environment
2.3 Ensuring Correct Usage of the SafeKare™System
Some tips on using the system to ensure the most effective usage.
Never turn off the caregiver receiver when using the system.
Charge the caregiver receiver at night, but keep it turned on if still monitoring a
patient at night.
Never let the battery run completely dead. This could damage the battery.
Check on the patient periodically to ensure that the badge or fob is still attached to
the patient.
When using the system outside of the home, use the short range “S” mode.
Consult the User’s Manual if you have problems.

Sistema SafeKareTM
La enfermedad de Alzheimer o las diferentes formas de la demencia pueden
afectar a todas las personas que estén encargadas del cuidado de un miembro de

! Antes de usar su sistema SafeKare, las baterías en el receptor del cuidador deben estar
totalmente cargadas.
La localización de los cables de encendido, toma de corriente para el receptor CRU101A está
mostradas en la figura 1. Revise la localización de cada una de las funciones.

1.1 Carga del Receptor del Cuidador
Conecte el adaptador AC en el enchufe de pared y entonces conecte el extremo final del
mismo en el Receptor del Cuidador. Ver la figura 2 para referencias.
Una carga completa inicial puede llevar entre unas 6-8 horas aproximadamente. La unidad no
se dañará si se carga por mas tiempo.
Luego de que el Receptor del Cuidador haya sido totalmente cargado, el receptor estará listo
para su uso

1.2 Armado del Distintivo o Colgante
Remuévalos de la caja de metal
! No tire esta caja. Esta puede ser necesaria para guardar o
embalar el distintivo o colgante.
1.3 Opción del Colgante: Activación del Colgante del paciente
Ponga la cara inferior de la Terminal del Paciente FOB101A sobre una superficie plana.
Remueva el tornillo que se encuentra en el centro de la terminal y remueva la cobertura. Ver
figura 3.-

La batería de la terminal se encuentra en la parte trasera del tablero de circuito. Remueva la
batería de la bolsa protectora de plástico que viene en su Kit de instalación.
Inserte la batería según se muestra en la figura 4. Verifique que la batería sea colocada
dentro del espacio con el signo menos (-) sobre el tablero del circuito.El lado positivo de la
batería (+) debe ser colocado opuesto al circuito. Coloque el tablero de instalación, una vez
que la batería fue instalada. Coloque la cobertura y atornille la parte trasera juntas. La
terminal está lista para su uso.

El distintivo del paciente viene con una batería pre-instalada. La batería no ha sido activada
para preservar la vida útil de la misma. En la parte trasera del distintivo, localice el circulo de
½ pulgada de diámetro con la inscripción ENCENDIDO, localizada en la mitad del distintivo.
Mantenga el distintivo firmemente con una mano y con la otra, utilice un dedo para presionar
el circulo durante unos 8 a 7 segundos. El distintivo se habrá activado y estará listo para su
uso.

1.5 Modo de Configuración del sistema
Antes de utilizar el Receptor del Cuidador junto con el Distintivo del paciente o Colgante, se
debe primero acceder al código del Distintivo o Colgante. Ponga el Distintivo o Colgante 3 -
pies del Receptor del Cuidador. Refiérase a la a figura 6. Encienda el Receptor del Cuidador(
Figura 1). Espere para su encendido total, este será indicado cuando las dos luces de atrás
paren de titilar. Localice el botón de “ Modo de Configuración” en el Receptor del
Cuidador.Mantenga el Receptor del Cuidador en posición vertical y presione el botón.
Manténgalo presionado hasta que escuche un sonido proveniente del Receptor del Cuidador ,
dentro del los 3 a los 15 segundos deberá escuchar un segundo sonido. Esto indica que el
Receptor ha sido configurado con el código del Distintivo o Colgante. Si la alarma del
Receptor comenzara a funcionar, repita la función. Si la alarma continuara sonando, consulte
la sección de posibles problemas en el Manual del Usuario.

2 Uso del sistema del Cuidador SafeKare
Para una descripción mas detallada del uso del sistema CRU101A referirse al Manual del
Usuario. Si tiene algún problema puede referirse a la “Guía de Instalación rápida”. Un
chequeo rápido del sistema de operaciones del receptor es informado en la siguiente
sección. Para mas detalles ver la sección 6 del Manual del Usuario.
Observe donde se encontrará la activación de la alarma del receptor cuando usted se mueve
alejándose del Distintivo o Colgante. Esta es una indicación de como la unidad operará en su
ambiente familiar.-
2.1 Verificación del alcance del sistema
Encienda el Receptor del Cuidador y ponga el Distintivo o Colgante en una mesa u objeto
similar. Ponga el botón que está localizado al costado del receptor en la posición “S” ( Uso de
corto alcance).
