Beforeyou begininstallation,read thisentiremanual.Then,obtain all the materialsand tools you will need
tomakethe installation.
Check localplumbing and electricalcodes.The installation mustconformtothem.
Useonlylead--freesolderandfluxforallsweat--solderconnections,asrequiredbystateandfederalcodes.
Usecarewhen handling the EcoWaterSystems conditioner.Do not turn upside down,drop,orseton sharp
protrusions.
Donotlocatethe EcoWaterSystems conditionerwherefreezingtemperaturesoccur.Do notattempt totreat
waterover120°F.Freezing,orhotwaterdamage voidsthewarranty.
Avoidinstalling in directsunlight. Excessivesun heatmay cause distortion orotherdamage to non--metallic
parts.
TheEcoWaterSystemsconditioner requiresaminimumwaterflowof3gallonsperminute at the inlet. Maxi-
mumallowableinletwaterpressureis 125 psi. If daytime pressureisover80 psi,nighttime pressuremay
exceed the maximum.Use a pressurereducing valveifnecessary.(Adding a pressurereducing valvemay
reducethe flow.)
TheEcoWaterSystems conditionerworks on 24 volt--60 hzelectricalpoweronly.Besureto usethe
included transformer.
ThisdevicecomplieswithPart15 of the FCC Rules.Operation is subject tothe following twoconditions:
(1)thisdevicemaynotcauseharmfulinterference,and(2)thisdevicemustacceptanyinterferencereceived,
including interferencethatmay cause undesired operation.Changesormodificationsnotexpresslyap-

EcoWaterSystems,Inc., guaranteestotheoriginalowner,that:
1...forthe lifetimeof theoriginalowner, the salt tankandthe
fiberglass mineraltankwill notrust, corrode,leak,burst, orin
anyothermannerfail toperformtheirproperfunctions;andthat
2...fora period offive (5)years afterinstallation, the
electroniccomputercontrolpanel,the valvebody,and all other
partswillbefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanship,and
will performtheirnormalfunctions.
jSeries3000 E/DWATER REFINERmodelsonly,
designated as+PLUSon the rating decal:The EcoLifeTM
resinisalsoguaranteed, forthelifetimeof theoriginalowner, to
removechlorine fromamunicipalwatersupply.
If during suchrespective period a partproves,afterinspection
byEcoWater, tobeso defective,EcoWaterwill,atits sole
option,either replace or repairthe partwithoutcharge except
normalshipping and installation charges.Labornecessaryto
maintainthisequipmentislimited to one (1)year.
GeneralProvisions
The abovewarrantiesare effective provided the watercondi-
tionerisoperatedatwaterpressuresnotexceeding125psi,and
atwatertemperaturesnotexceeding120°F(andonamunicipal
chlorinatedwatersupply-- modelsdesignatedas+PLUSonthe
rating decal);provided furtherthat the waterconditionerisnot
subject toabuse,misuse,alteration,neglect, freezing,accident
ornegligence;andprovidedfurtherthat thewaterconditioneris
notdamaged asthe resultofanyunusualforce ofnaturesuch
as,butnotlimited to, flood,hurricane, tornado orearthquake.
EcoWaterSystems, Inc., isexcused if failureto performits
warrantyobligationsisthe resultofstrikes,government
regulation,materialsshortages,orothercircumstancesbeyond
its control.
To obtainwarranty service,noticemustbe given,withinthirty
(30)daysof thediscoveryof thedefect, toyourlocalEcoWater
Systemsdealer.

chasersofresidentialEcoWaterSystemsUnitswithinthe Conti-

Man’sveryexistencedependsonwater. It is1ofthe
basic commoditiesoflife.Waterisbestasnature
providesit, isacommon misconception.Practically
all naturalwaterneedsrefinementortreatment to
makeitsafeto drinkormoresatisfactoryto use.
The earth’swatersupply cyclestartsinthe upper
cloud layers.Asit fallstothe earth asrain orsnow,
itpicks up impuritiesand gasesfromthe atmo-
sphere.Landingonearth,itseepsoverandthrough
the ground,dissolving earthminerals.Passing
through limestone,itdissolves calciumand magne-
sium, the hardness minerals. Iron depositsimpart
iron tothe water.Acidityand sedimentsare other
waterconditions.
Municipalwatersupplies comefromsurfacereser-
voirs,suchaslakesandrivers,orfromunderground
reservoirs.Usually,municipalitieschlorinatethewa-
tertomakeitsafeto drink.Sedimentisremoved by
filtration.Tastesand odorsarereduced orelimi-
nated.The wateris conditioned tocomplywithcer-
tainspecifications.However,hardness minerals,
tastesandodorsarenotalwaysreducedtothemost
desirablelevels.
Underground reservoirsprovide ourprivatewater
supplies.Becausethewaterisrawand untreated,it
canhavevaryingamountsofhardness,iron,tastes,
odors,acidity,orcombinationsofthese.Differentlo-
calitiesand waterlevelsaffectmineralcontent.
WATER CONDITIONING
Waterconditioning isthe treatmentof4 general
conditions.These are:(1)Hardness,(2)Iron,(3)
Acidity,(4)Sediments.
(1)HARDNESS isatermto describe the presence
ofcalciumand magnesium mineralsinwater.A
chemicalanalysisaccuratelymeasuresthe amount
ofmineralsin grainweight. Forexample,1 gallonof
waterwith5grainspergallon (gpg)hardness has
dissolved minerals, thatifsolidified,aboutequals
thesizeof1ordinaryaspirintablet.Onegallonofwa-
ter,25gpg hard,hasamineralcontentequal insize
to5aspirintablets.Waterhardness variesgreatly
across the country.Itgenerally containsfrom3to
100 gpg.
Hardwateraffectslivingingeneral.Hardnessminer-
als combine withsoap tomakeasoap curd.The
curd greatlyreducesthe cleaning action ofsoap.
Precipitated hardness mineralsformacruston
cookingutensils,appliances,andplumbingfixtures.
Even the tastesof foodsare affected.Awatersoft-
ener removesthe hardness mineralsto eliminate
these problems,and others.Pages20--23 describe
howthe EcoWaterconditionerworks.
SodiumInformation:Watersoftenersusing sodium
chloride (salt)for regeneration add sodiumtothe
water.Personson sodiumrestricted diets should
considertheaddedsodiumaspartoftheiroverallin-
take.
(2)IRONinwaterismeasured in partspermillion
(ppm).The total*ppmofiron,and type ortypes*,is
determined by chemicalanalysis.Fourdifferent
typesofiron inwaterare:¶Ferrous(clearwater),
·Ferric(red water),¸Bacterialand organically
boundiron,¹Colloidalandinorganicallyboundiron
(ferrousorferric).
*Watermay contain 1 ormore of the 4 typesofiron
and any combination of these.Total iron isthe sum
of the contents.
¶Ferrous(clearwater)ironissolubleanddissolves
inwater.Itisusuallydetected bytaking a sample of
waterinaclearbottleorglass.Immediatelyaftertak-
ing,thesampleisclear.Asthewatersamplestands,
itgraduallycloudsandturnsslightlyyelloworbrown
asairoxidizesthe iron.Thisusuallyoccursin 15 to
30 minutes.AnEcoWaterconditionerwill remove
moderateamountsofthistypeofiron(seespecifica-
tions).
·Ferric(redwater),and¸Bacterialandorganically
boundironsareinsoluble.Thisironisvisibleimmedi-
atelywhen drawnfromafaucetbecauseithasoxi-
dizedbeforereachingthehome. It appearsassmall
cloudy yellow,orange,or reddishsuspended par-
ticles.Afterthewaterstandsforaperiodof time,the
particlessettletothebottomofthecontainer.Gener-
allytheseironsareremoved fromwaterbyfiltration.
Chlorinationisalsorecommendedforbacterial iron.
AnEcoWaterconditionerwill removeminimalquan-
tities(see specifications)of ferriciron.

¹Colloidalandinorganicallyboundironisaferricor
ferrousformthatwillnotfilterorexchangeoutofwa-
ter. Insomeinstances, treatmentmayimprovecol-
loidalironwater,butalwaysconsultaqualifiedwa-
terchemistrylabbefore attempting totreatit.
Colloidalironwaterusuallyhasayellowappearance
when drawn.Afterstanding forseveralhours, the
colorpersistsand the iron doesnotsettle,butre-
mains suspended inthe water.
Ironinwatercausesstainsonclothingandplumbing
fixtures. It negativelyaffectsthe tasteof food,drink-
ing water,and otherbeverages.
(3)ACIDITYoracidwateriscausedbycarbondiox-
ide,hydrogen sulfide,and sometimesindustrial
wastes.Itis corrosiveto plumbing,plumbing fix-
tures,waterheaters,and otherwaterusing ap-
pliances. Incan also damage and cause premature
failure ofseals,diaphragms,etc., inwaterhandling
equipment.
Achemicalanalysisisneeded tomeasurethe de-
greeofacidityinwater.ThisiscalledthepHofwater.
Watertesting below6.9 pHisacidic.The lowerthe
pHreading,thegreatertheacidity.Aneutralizerfilter
orachemicalfeed pump are usuallyrecommended
totreatacidwater.
(4)SEDIMENTisfine,foreignmaterialparticlessus-
pended inwater.Thismaterial ismostoften clayor
silt. Extremeamountsofsedimentmaygivethewa-
teracloudyappearance.Asediment filternormally
correctsthis condition.

1.Tank--in--Tankmodelsarefactoryassembled.
Duringinstallation,removethetopandsaltholecov-
ers.Setasidetopreventdamage.Checkthebrine-
well tobesureitis secured and vertical(FIG.1).
2.Lift the brine valve outof the brinewell.Besure
the floatstemis verticaltothe brine valve body so
sealswill seatproperlyduring operation.Replace
the brine valveinthe brinewell and install the brine-
well cover.
3.Installthebrinetankoverflowgrommetandelbow
inthe 3/4”diameterholeinthe brine tank sidewall.

SELECTINSTALLATIONLOCATION
Considerall of the following when selecting an
installation location forthe EcoWaterconditioner.
SToconditionallwaterinthehome,installtheEco-
Waterconditionerclosetothe watersupplyinlet,
and before all otherplumbing connections,ex-
ceptoutsidewaterpipes.Outsidefaucetsshould
remain on hardwaterto avoidwasting condi-
tioned waterand salt.
SAnearbydrainisneededtocarryawayregenera-
tion discharge water.Afloordrainispreferred,
withalaundrytub,sump,standpipe,etc.,asother
options(check yourlocalcodes).
STheEcoWaterconditionerworks on 24 volts
only.Atransformerisincludedtoreduce120--60
Hzhousepower.Provideanapproved,grounded
outletwithin10’of theconditioner.Thecondition-
erincludesa 10’ powercableforconnection be-
tween the transformerand the timer.
SPositiontheEcoWaterconditioneratleast6”from
surrounding walls,orotherappliances, to allow
access foradding saltand servicing.
SLocatetheEcoWaterconditioner,intheplumbing
system,afterall otherinstalled watercondition-
ing equipment, except forataste and odorfilter.

1. INSTALL BYPASS VALVE and/orCOPPER
TUBES
IMPORTANT:The supportassembly(FIG.6)isfac-
toryinstalled.The bypass valve oroutletcopper
tube will notinsertproperlyif the supportassembly
isreversed ornot fullyintothe valve port.
a.IFINSTALLINGANECOWATERBYPASS
VALVE,putlubricatedo--ringsealsontobothbypass
valve ports(FIG.6B).Carefully slide the bypass
valveintothesoftenervalveandinstallthe“C”clips.
b.Slidealubricated o--ring sealonto each of the
coppertubes.Carefullyinsert the coppertubesinto
thebypassvalve(FIG.6B),orintothesoftenervalve
(FIG.6 and 6A).Then install the ‘‘C’’ clips.
NOTE:Forlubrication,usesilicone grease ap-
proved forpotablewatersupplies.
IMPORTANT:Be surethebypass valve and/or
coppertubesarefirmlyheldin place bytheplas-
tic‘‘C’’ clips,and the clips are securelyin place.
2.TURN OFF WATERSUPPLY
a.Closethe mainwatersupply valve,nearthe well
pump orwatermeter.
b.Shutoff the electricorfuelsupplytothe water
heater.
c.Openhighandlowfaucetstodrainall waterfrom
the house pipes.
3. INSTALLINGTHREE VALVE BYPASS
If installing a 3--valve bypass system,plumb as
needed using FIG.3 asa guide.When installing
sweatcopper,be sureto uselead--freesolderand
flux,required byfederaland statecodes.Use pipe
jointcompound on outside pipe threads.
4.MOVE THE ECOWATER UNITINTOPLACE
Movethe EcoWaterSystemUnit(resintankonlyif
2--tankmodel)intoinstallation position.Setiton a
solid,smoothandlevelsurface.Ifneeded,placethe
unitonasectionofplywood,aminimumof3/4”thick.
Then,shimunderthe plywoodtolevelthe unit, FIG.

(1)Thoroughly clean and fluxall joints.
(2)Pulltheplastic‘‘C’’clipsandremovetheinletand

Soldering heatwill damage the valve.

11. On2--tankmodels,connect the brine tubing to
the nozzle and venturihousing,FIGS.1,2 and 9.
Usethe elbow,o--ring,nut--ferrule and screen in-
cluded on the skin--pack.Tighten the nutbyhand,
then another1/4turnwithapliers.
NOTE:Routethe tubing neatlyoutof the wayand
cutit tothe desired length.Forlongerdistances,or-
derthe optionalparts shown on page 37, to extend
the tubing.
R20 AND HR20 MODELS:Awhitecolorcoded
nozzle and venturi(.023)isfactoryinstalled foruse
onwatersupplypressureof50psiandhigher. If wa-

b.Placethe bypass valve(s)in‘‘bypass’’ position.

c.Fullyopen the mainwatersupply valve.Observe
steadyflowfromthe opened faucets,with no air
bubbles.
d.EXACTLYasfollows,place bypass valve(s)in
‘‘service’’.
(1)SINGLEBYPASSVALVE:SLOWLY,movethe
valvestemtoward‘‘service’’,pausing several
timesto allowthe unit to pressurizeslowly.
(2)3--VALVE BYPASS:Fully closethe bypass
valve and open the outletvalve.SLOWLY,open
the inletvalve,pausing severaltimesto allowthe

and,ashotwaterisused,itrefillswithconditioned
water. In afewdays,thehotwaterwillbefullycondi-
