The Orbinox mo el MU is a 4 si e sealing penstock. The
gates are suitable for ifferent types of applications with
a highly versatile flow control for waste water treatment
plants, irrigation, hy raulic works an hy ro-electric
power plants.
From sizes 150 mm x 150 mm to 1200 mm x 1200 mm,
the MU mo el has a unique seal esign that can achieve
minimal equal seating an unseating (bi irectional)
leakage rates. Sizes 1300 mm x 1300 mm up to 2000 mm
x 2000 mm are available in both uni- irectional (only
suitable for seating water hea s) an bi- irectional
configurations. The maximum leakage rate is lower the
maximum allowable recommen e by DIN 19569-4
(class 5) an AWWA C561 un er normal con itions.
Orbinox also esigns an manufactures the MU mo el
penstock in larger sizes, for more eman ing service
con itions.

The MU penstock is manufacture in general accor ance
to DIN 19569. Other stan ar s such as AWWA C561 an
BS 7775 also available.
The stan ar MU mo el is manufacture in stainless steel
which has a higher corrosion resistance in many
applications which results into a longer life cycle with little
or no maintenance. Other materials of construction are
available upon request, such as AISI 904L, Duplex
stainless, etc.

In many cases, the operating floor level is locate
substantially higher than the opening. In or er to be able
to operate the gate, stem extensions are necessary.
Stem gui es are use to limit the “unsupporte ” length of
the stem extension in or er to avoi any buckling failure.
The stem gui e has a HWMPE gui e to re uce friction
between the gui e an the extension.
Non-Rising St m Configuration
As stan ar , non-rising stem gate configurations are use
with self-containe frame esigns. Therefore, the stem
extension oes not support the axial loa (only torque)
an less wall brackets are require .
As a general rule, a stem gui e shoul be installe every
3 meters of unsupporte stem extension.
Rising St m Configuration
As stan ar , rising stem gate configurations are use with
open-frame esigns. Therefore, the stem extension has to
support the axial loa when the gate is operate . In
consequence, the use of stem gui es are critical to avoi
any buckling failure. As a general rule, a stem gui e
shoul be installe every 2 meters of unsupporte stem
extension.
This section briefly escribes the installation, operation an
maintenance of MU penstocks. For more etaile
information please refer to the “MU IOM Manual”.
Installation:
Orbinox MU penstocks are installe by means of Anchor
Bolts. Depen ing on the size an working con itions they
shall be either of the mechanical or chemical type (see
table below).
In or er to avoi leakage between the concrete wall an
the frame, Orbinox recommen s the use of construction
sealant equivalent to Sikaflex 11FC sealant (200ml per
meter of opening perimeter).
The minimum concrete strength shall be 20.7 MPa.
The tolerance of the concrete construction (flatness,
levelness an plumbness) shall be in accor ance to
DIN 18202.
For etaile information about type, size an quantity of
the require anchor bolts at the installation, please refer to
the notes on the “General Arrangement Drawing”.
Maint nanc and Op ration:
The Orbinox MU penstocks nee practically no
maintenance. The stem shall be kept lubricate an seals
shall be replace if amage . The MU penstock is close
by applying a clockwise rotation.
Applying too much force on the operator when closing the
gate may cause amage to the stem.
