Warranty terms:
The warranites are valid on condition that:
- The boiler and the heating system have been installed in accordance with the installation
instructions and in a professional manner.
- The location where the product is installed is suitable for purpose.
The warranties do not cover:
- The overall function of the heating system, costs incurred as a result of the heating
system being out of operation, or the cost of the temporary replacement of products.
- Damage or injury caused by negligence during the installation or by operating the boiler
in a way which conflicts with the installation and user instructions.
- Damage caused by abnormal wear, incorrect operation and maintenance.
- Damage caused by the use of non-original spare parts.
- Damage caused by the boiler being positioned in an unsuitable location.
- Damage caused by vermin.
The warranties are void:
- If the boiler is used to burn materials for which is not certified by the EPA
- If the boiler is not operated according to the owners manual.

▀ In general
Effecta Smart is a lambda controlled boiler with a induced-draft fan. The boiler must be docked
to one or more accumulator tanks, loading should be done with a thermic valve that ensures
that the returning water temperature is high enough. Hot water is taken from the top of the
boiler and is led to the accumulator tank. The returning water from the tank is led to the bottom
of the boiler through a loading unit. The water is conducted from
the accumulator tank to the radiator circuit via a shunt valve that mixes the water to the desired
temperature.
Hot water preparation
For hot water storage, the accumulator tank must have a built-in hot water coil or equivalent.
The temperature of the hot water is adjusted by means of a mixing valve. The amount of hot
water that can be tapped depends on the accumulator tank temperature, size and the incoming
cold water flow.
Combustion
On the front of the boiler, there are two air inlets. The dampers are controlled by two motors
that receive a signal about the oxygen level from the lambda probe to obtain the best possible
environmental value and thus the best efficiency. Normally, the preset values do not need to be
adjusted for different wood types and humidity levels.
Disassmbly and disposal
It will be many years before your Effecta boiler is worn out, but it is important that you follow
the regulations in force at the time concerning disassembly and disposal of your boiler
The fuel
It is important to use the right kind of wood in your boiler. You find more information about
different kinds of wood on page 6.
Maintenance and service
This wood heater needs periodic inspection and repair for proper operation. It is against federal
regulations to operate this wood heater in a manner inconsistent with operating instructions in
this manual.

Surroundings
When you use wood as a heating source you should always burn in a manner that is gentle to
your surroundings and the environment. It is important that you think about the people who live
in your surroundings. Try to keep the following things in mind.
The fuel
Effecta Smart is tested to be fired with wood logs. What kind of wood has no greater effect to
the boilers operation, except that hardwood has a greater calorific value than softwood. The
result of using hardwood is that the accumulator is heated quicker with hardwood in compari-
son to softwood. Hardwood is heavier and more dense than softwood which results in that the
amount of wooden materia is more compressed and compact in the gasification chamber. This
leads to an even and dense gas production which makes the boiler more stable during its firing
cycle. Burning with only oakwood gives a higher wear to the ceramics, we recommend to mix
oak with other kinds of wood.
When you are firing big firewood and small firewood should be mixed with the largest at the top.
You should not only fire with chopped firewood or the other way around. If you only fire with
chopped firewood the boiler burns in a higher effect, this reduces the lifespan of the wear parts,
such as the ceramics etc. If you only fire with large firewood the boiler will burn at a lower effect
with low flue gases, this may damage the chimney due to condensation.
Never burn environmentally harmful waste such as impregnated or painted wood, household
waste, plastic or rubber etc.
Storing the fuel
To use Effecta Smart to it fullest the wood quality must be good. It is important that the wood
has been stored so it has a moisture content of 15-20%. Split the wood within 2-6" in diame-
ter large pieces. Try to take advantage of the sun and wind when you store the wood, the wind
should be able to blow through the wood for a quick drying. Keep in mind that the efficiency
reduces significantly if there is to much moisture in the wood. Always use the full length of the
fire chamber, the log length should be close to 20" in length.

▀ To the installer
It is time to install your Effecta Smart. Try to follow our instructions for a safe installation. After
installation, be sure to instruct the customer on how the heating system and the boiler work, in
order to avoid unnecessary complications in the future
Set up
The boiler is positioned so that the surface temperature of flammable building material will not
exceed 176°F. The boiler should be positioned at least 6 inches (1.) from the wall. The distance
from the smoke connection to a
flammable wall with ignition protective
covering must be at least 12 inches
(4.). In order to clean the boiler, a
minimum clear space of 3 feet (2.) is
required in front of the boiler and on
the side at the convection section
and at any inspection panel in the
chimney. A passage with a minimum
width of 20 inches (3.) is required
along one of the long sides of the
boiler.
The boiler room
The boiler must be installed in a boiler
room or boiler house. The ceilings
and walls must be fitted with ignition
protective covering and the floor
must be made of non-combustible
material. Minimum ceiling height at the boiler is 6 feet (5.). The boiler room or boiler house must
be equipped with a fresh air intake with the a least the same dimensions as the chimnmey (6) or
with a
sufficiently large free sectional area to avoid low pressure in the boiler
room. It must be impossible to close the air intake.
Accumulator tank
Be sure that the accumulator tanks are well insulated. Effecta Smart 40 should have an
accumulator volume of at least 400 gallons, and Effecta Smart 55 should have an accumulator
volume of at least 800 gallons.
Chimney
The chimney should have a diameter of at least 6 / 7 inches, depending on model. If your
chimney is smaller, Effecta should be consulted before installation. The draught in the chimney
should be about 15 pa at low temperatures. It is important that the chimney is tested and
approved by a certified chimney sweep before a new boiler is installed. If the chimney has
a strong draught, a draft stabiliser (see page 31.) may need to be installed for good boiler
operation. If you have a tall chimney and an outgoing flue gas temperature below 320°F, there
is a risk of condensation in the chimney, which can damage the chimney in the long term. A
suitable temperature is 160-180°F three feet down into the chimney. Ask your local chimney
sweep for help to measure the temperature. If the chimney is tall and has a large area, a draught
that is too strong may mean high levels of flue gas and over ignition in the loading compartment.
If this is the case, a counter draught door must be installed

Thermic valve
Laddomat or an equivalent product should always be installed
between the boiler and accumulator tank. Function is described
in detail on page 17. Note that warranty is void if it is not used!
Shunt control
Installation of a shunt control on the radiator
circuit is always recommended. The software in the boiler is
prepared for shunt control. The shunt motor is mounted on the
shunt valve and regulates the temperature using an indoor sen-
sor, outdoor sensor or both.
Expansion vessel
The expansion vessel can normally withstand a pressure of 88
psi
bar. Maximum operating temperature is 210°F. The volume of
a pressure vessel is 10-12 % litres depending on the system’s
overall volume. An open vessel must contain 5 % of the total
system’s volume. When planning for size, keep in mind the
radiator volume and the volume of the boiler. A pressure vessel
must have a pre pressure of 3 psi above the highest radiator.
Safety valve
The safety valve opens if the pressure reaches 44 psi. When
the valve opens, excess water drips out and the system pres-
sure is reduced. The pressure must under no circumstances
exceed 44 psi.
Shunt valve
The shunt valve is fitted to the radiator circuit. Its task is to mix
accumulator tank water with recycled water from the radiators
to achieve the correct temperature of the radiator water. For
the installation of the shunt automatic system, please follow the
supplied description.

The valve kit
The valve kit is fitted to the hot water circuit, and is instal-
led to premix the water before it reaches the tap point. This
means you avoid burns and the temperature can be easily
adjusted. If it is not installed, mixers at tap points will deterio-
rate and break.
Pipes
Normally copper piping is used for connection of the system.
Connection between accumulators must be a minimum of
1"/1-1/4", If the pipe length is more than 20 feet to the first
accumulator tank it is needed to increase one dimension in
size. Remember to insulate the pipes between the accumula-
tors to avoid large losses from the system.
Accumulator tank
The Effecta Smart must be used along with heat storage. For
the Smart 40 the minimum amount of storage is 400 gallons,
and for the Smart 55 the minimum is 800 gallons.
Draft stabiliser
We recommend that you always install a draft stabiliser in
your chimney. The stabiliser will give the boiler a more even
draught and will improve function. In addition, Effecta Lambda
II closes its air damper after firing is complete, which pre-
vents downdrafts through the boiler. This can sometimes lead
to a high back pressure during new firing, since the chimney
is cold. This is prevented with a draft stabiliser.

With emergency cooling
The quench valve (3065) serves as a temperature controller
for boilers in open or closed plants that are fired with solid
fuels and are equipped with a cooling coil. The valve is
mounted in the thermowell on the top of the boiler(1). The
cold water is connected through the valve in the cooling
coil. The cooled water is then led down to a floor drain or
another outlet that can stand high tempertures.
▀ Emergency cooling
In accordance with the EN303-5 standard the boiler is tested with a emergency cooling coil.
When firing solid fuels in a pressurized system it is at all times recommended to use the cooling
coil. The quench valves SYR 3065 and 5067 makes it possible for closed plants to be used
with solid fuels, for example wood, chips or turf. There are two different sytems for emergency
cooling of the boiler. Either direct injection in the boiler (5067) or with the coil that is placed on
the top of the boiler (3065).
Without emergency cooling
The quench valve (5067) serves as a temperature controller
for boilers in open or closed plants that are fired with solid
fuels and is not equipped with cooling coil. The valve is
mounted on the hottest place, the flow pipe(1). Incoming
coldwater is connected to the return pipe (2) and the
cooled water is connected through the valve on the flow
pipe (3). The cooled water is then led down to a floor drain
or another outlet that can stand high tempertures.

▀ Electrical connection
When you connecting power to the boiler you need to open
the white connection box, located on the back of the boiler (1),
in the box there is a terminal block for incoming power. The lo-
ading pump is connected to the same block. Check the electri-
cal scheme on pg 14 for correct wiring.
Remember to cut the power before starting any work with the boards.
All wiring should be connected by a certified installer.
For easier connection to the terminal block use a flat screwdriver, width
1/8". You can open the spring load in both tracks on each connection.

Connections to the board
There are functions that are connected to the motherboards.
These are not normally connected from factory, it is done on
site. Start by removing the cover plate in the front of the boiler
(1) The plate is loosen by pulling the handle on the left side,
then detached the two mounts on the right side. Then remove

Incoming cables
In the back of the boiler there is two conduits which lead to
boards in the front. Use these for the cables and sensor you
need. Separate low voltage from high voltage.
Expansions board
You have a possibility to equip the boiler with a expansion
board (4). On the board you can for example connect several
shunt groups. When connection the board use the conduits
on the right side of the boiler (5). Remember to separate high
voltage from low voltage.

It should always be installed a thermoregulation to Effecta Smart. If no
thermoregulation is installed, the boilers warranty on the pressure vessel is not valid.
▀ Laddomat M120
Effecta Smart has the posibility to control a loading circuit
with a motor (1.), instead of of a circuit with thermic valve.
The loading procedure is done in a similar way but you have
the possibility to set the loading temperature. Connect to
17 and 18 on the motherboard. The sensor G4 is mounted
on the flow in order to sense requested loading tempera-
ture.
1. Start up when the boiler
temperature is below 162°F, the
cartridge has not opened, the beam
for self-circulation is tight against
the tank due to the pressure from
the pump.
2. Operational phase when the boiler
temperature exceeds 162°F, the
cartridge opens and mixes cold
water from the accumulator tank.
Boiler water return temp is normally
about 158°F. At 194°F from the
boiler, the Laddomat normally gives
151°F back to the boiler.
3. Final phase When the accumulator
tank is fully charged, hot water
will enter on the cold side of the
Laddomat. Then the plunger opens
fully toward the accumulator tank
and closes the pipe toward the top
of the boiler. All flow now goes to
the accumulator tank. This feature
is important for the accumulator
tank to charge fully.
4. Self-circulation In the event of
loss of electricity or failure of the
circulation pump, the check valve is
opened for self-circulation. This will
normally prevent boiling unless the
accumulators are fully charged or
the piping presents an obstacle for
circulation.

▀ Valve combination
▀ Hot water
The hot water is prepared in the accumulator tank. The cold
water is led through one or more coils in the tank. The cold
water is heated in the coils from the surrounding tempera-
ture in the tank. It is then mixed in the mixing valve (1) to
reach a comfortable temperature for usage. In order to have
the best hot water comfort the flow should be 3-4 gallons
per minute.
If the flow is to high it is hard to obtain all heat stored in the
tank and makes you fire your boiler sooner.
In flow-through coils no legionella bacterias can be formed.
The valve combination is used to keep an even temperature and not reach a scalding tempera-
ture in your tap points. To increase temperture turn (1) to +. You may have to reduce the flow
through the coils with the valve(6). There is a safety valve (9) which releases water through the
drain pipe (10) if the pressure is too high. Make sure that the drain pipe have runoff to a floor
drain.

Room sensor
The sensor should be mounted in a place with good air circulation and a temperature that is re-
presentative for the rest of the house. Make sure that there are no other heating sources close
by, for examle lights, freezer or refrigerator.
Loosen the control wheel by
pulling outwards. Then loosen
the screw to open the box.

▀ Shunt control
Outdoor sensor
If an outdoor sensor is used this should be mounted on the facade of the house. The best loca-
tion is facing north/northeast. Make sure that the sensor is not disturbed by solar gain, if there
is no protection a hood can be mounted to protect the sensor. Remember that the angle of the
solar gain is changed from spring to fall. The sensor should be placed 6ft from ground level to
sense the correct temperature.

Effecta Smart has its own shunt control. The shunt control menu is activated when sensor G7
is connected. There you regulate the heating of your house. Start by choosing which sensor to
control with, room sensor, out door sensor or both. If both are chosen the heat is controlled by
the outdoor sensor but the room sensor can provide corrections on the supply temperature +/-
10°F, max room temp. is about to be reached or if the desired room temperature is not reached.

▀ Heating curves and adjustments
The right heating curve is essential to get a pleasant indoor climate. The heat curve shall be
adjusted for your properties energy need at different outdoor temperatures. All properties have
different energy needs, which could mean that one house would need a 80˚F flow at a outdoor
temperature of +-32˚F while another house needs 115˚F.
Adjustment of the heating curve is done in the "Shunt control" menu. There you set choosen curve and adjust it. It
can take several weeks to find the right curve and make the fine tunings needed. During the time the adjustment
are made it is important that:
- The outdoor temperature must not be higher than +41˚F.
- Energy saver function must be switched off.
- Valves on the radiators must be fully open.
- Radiators must be checked and in function..
It is hard to find the right curve from the start, you may have an idea of which temperature you used to have on your
heating system. If you do not know which temperature your house needs you can use our recommended values:
- Houses with underfloor heating. “Slope 95”
- Well insulated low energy house with low temp. radiators. “Slope 105”
- A high temp. radiator system in a older house with poor insulation. “slope 130”
Example of slope:
If the slope is set to 130 this is the actualt temperature distributed to the radiators at an
outdoor temperature of 5°F. If the house has underfloor heating the temperature is set
signifacantly lower as described above.
Example of adjustment:
Adjustment of the curve means that the temperature can be raised or lowered at a
certain outdoor temperature. Adjustment 0 means that the flow is 68 °F at an outdoor
temperature of 68°F. Adjustment -10 means that flow temperature is instead 58°F.
