Numbers up
Glenys Tyas has been cooking school meals for longer than she’d care to admit to, the last
19 years of which have been at Honley Junior School near Huddersfield in West Yorkshire,
where Glenys is Head Cook. She knows a thing or two about school meals.
The biggest change in recent years has been the move back to traditional cooking, with
most meals now cooked from scratch on the premises.
Glenys believes that providing children with wholesome, nutritious food is the key to a
successful school meals service – Honley Junior School has not experienced the drop in
school meals uptake evident in many schools in recent months.
Says Glenys: “We serve 150-160 meals a day to children and staff. Our numbers have
stayed consistent because we know what our children like. Of course we’ve adapted to
meet new healthier guidelines but we still create menus that we know our children like.”
Regulars on the menu are home-made burgers from locally sourced meat, roast chicken,
home made pizza’s and of course fish dishes, all served with 2 portions of fresh vegetables.
Hot puddings and custard still go down a treat.
Changing menus and more cooking from scratch has meant that the school kitchen has had
to invest in new equipment. Explains Glenys: “Because we’re not frying as much we needed
more oven capacity and have added a new Falcon Dominator range to our kitchen –
bringing the total to three, one for each of our team!”
