1. INTRODUCTION
The units of RAH KA series are monoblock air cooled chillers suitable for external installation.
The units of PAH KA series are monoblock air –to –water heat pumps with cycle inversion, suitable for external installation.
They have got one or two independent refrigerant circuits, working with refrigerant R134a and equipped with semi hermetic screw compressors.
They are particularly suitable for installation in air conditioning applications with centralized plants; especially in shopping centres, tertiary and industrial eld where
a considerable cooling capacity is required and at the same time excellent seasonal performances and low environmental impact must be granted.
1.1. PREFACE
This document (henceforth Handbook), originally written in Italian language, is realized in compliance with the applicable European laws and gives information
required to carry on a perfectly done and safe handling, installation, start up, use, regulation, maintenance and disposal of the unit it is referred to.
The Handbook and its enclosures, which have to be considered an integral part of the same, must be fully read before anyhow intervening on the unit and its
prescriptions must be carefully followed.
The failure to comply with instruction of this handbook during installation, operation, maintenance, repairing and disposal of the unit can damage people, objects and
environment.
If any doubt s arises on the correct understanding of the instr uctions of this Handbook, please contact EMICON A .C.S.p.A (hencefor th the Manufac turer) for claric ation.
The unit must be installed, managed, serviced, repaired and disposed in compliance with local regulations and laws in force.

Unless differently stated on the order, the unit of this Handbook is manufactured in compliance with the relevant European Directives and in particular it meets the
Essential Safety requirements of the following directives:

• 2004/108/CE (Electromagnetic compatibility)
• 2006/42/CE (Machinery Directive)
• 2006/95/CE (Low tension Directive)
The compliance with the a.m. Directives is certied, as required, by a Conformity Declaration and highlighted by the EC Mark on the Identication Tag of the unit
which will be described in the following paragraph.
To grant the compliance of the equipment with the a.m. Directives, it is designed, manufactured and tested following the regulations of the harmonized rules listed in
the a.m. Conformity Certicates.

1.5 WARRANTY
The Manufacturer guarantees the unit, in compliance with what stated on its Sales Conditions and with what explicitly agreed in the contract, if present.
The Manufacturer warranty will decay if the instruction of this Handbook won’t be scrupulously followed.
The Manufacturer declines any responsibility for possible damages to people, animals, things or environment due to any miss-installation, maintenance or regula-
tion, i.e. to a misuse of the equipment; it is considered a misuse, any use of the unit, not clearly stated in the Handbook.
During the Start up of the unit, ll the Commissioning report attached to the Handbook in, and send a copy to the Manufacturer, in order to
make the Warranty effective.
1.6 MANUAL READERSHIP
The Handbook and its enclosures are supplied together with the unit they’re referred to.
The Handbook must be carefully kept by the machine Owner or by the person responsible for the equipment (henceforth: Owner) in a proper place. To this purpose,
inside the electrical panel of the unit, there is a plastic pocket to hold it, so that the handbook can be easily consulted and well stored.
All the people authorized to somehow intervene on the unit must be informed on the instruction contained in this Handbook.
The failure in following the instructions contained in this Handbook during installation, operation, maintenance, repairing and disposal of the unit can cause damages
to people, things and environment. If the Handbook will be lost or damaged, a copy of the same can be required to the Manufacturer.
1.7 PERSONNEL REQUIREMENT
Any intervention on the unit, especially on the cooling circuit, must be carried out by qualied and well instructed personnel, who must be suitably equipped with
individual protective devices and trained to the refrigerants use, in compliance with current local Laws and Regulations in force.
All the maintenances and interventions requiring personnel with different special competences (such as welders, electricians, programmers, etc.) must be supervised
by personnel with a deep competence and experience on cooling systems.
The personnel operating with refrigerant uids must be suitably trained to achieve the competence required for a safe use of these substances. This includes, besides
those stated by current local laws, the following competences:
Current local Laws, Regulations and Standards concerning refrigerants knowledge;
Deep knowing and suitable training on refrigerant and required protective devices use;
Knowing and training on leakages prevention, as well as on cans use, leakages detection, refrigerant recycling and disposal.
The personnel must be able to understand and apply the local applicable laws.
To keep this skill, the personnel must be regularly and periodically trained, in compliance with the local laws in force.
1.8 Dangerousareas
Inside the unit, there could be areas subject to residual risks, such as:
• Devices subject to electrical voltage
• Moving mechanical members
• High temperature surfaces
• sharp edges or sharp items
• components holding high pressure uids
If possible, dangerous components are made inaccessible by protecting them with suitable covers, which can be removed by qualied and suitably instructed
personnel only.
If the a.m. protections are not present, the dangerous areas are clearly marked.

2. DESCRIPTION
2.1 Nomenclature
In the following scheme, it is explained the meaning of the device name acronym
The nominal cooling capacity is calculated with evaporator water 12/7°C, external air temperature 35°C and relative humidity 50%.
2.2 RAH/PAHKaSeriesVersion
The RAH Ka Series is available in 2 different versions:
• Standard Version
• Low Noise Version S
The PAH Ka heat pump series is available in Standard version
STANDARD VERSION
Air cooled chillers with semi-hermetic screw compressors (without sound proof cabinet), working on 1 or 2 independent circuits, user side shell & tube evaporator
and condensing coils, designed to operate till 45°C external air temperature.
LOW NOISE VERSION
Air cooled chillers with semi-hermetic screw compressors (without sound proof cabinet), working on 1 or 2 independent circuits, user side shell & tube evaporator
and oversized condensing coils, with reduced airow to the condenser coils (reached through the modication of the axial fans electrical connection) compressors
cabinet insulated by sound-proof mat.
2.3 Modelswithtotalorpartialheatrecovery
MODELSWITHTOTALHEATRECOVERY(RT)
Each model of RAH Ka series, on demand, is available in total heat recovery version (Option RT). In this conguration, each cooling circuit is equipped with a
refrigerant/water exchanger on gas discharge side. This exchanger, installed in parallel to the air condenser, is sized to recover 100% of the condensing heat to
produce hot sanitary water or for other heating applications.
MODELSWITHPARTIALHEATRECOVERY(RP)
Each model of RAH/PAH Ka series, on demand, is available in partial condensation heat recovery version (Option RP). In this conguration, each cooling circuit
is equipped with a refrigerant/water exchanger on gas discharge side. This exchanger, installed in series and upstream the air condenser, is designed to recover
about 20% of the condensing heat to produce hot /warm sanitary water.

2.4 MAIN COMPONENTS
FRAME
The base and the frame are made up of high-thickness galvanized steel elements, assembled with stainless steel rivets. All the external galvanized steel surfaces
are protected by a powder painting of colour RAL 7035 smooth. The structural elements are rmly xed making the frame very strong and able to support all
the unit components and to absorb any mechanical stress due to unit handling and running. The electrical cabinet and compressors technical compartment (if
options CF or CFU is included) are totally closed and separated from the airow. The external panels of the technical compartments are easily dismountable and
positioned on the side of the unit granting an easy access to the main components. Moreover the components are installed inside the structure in such a way to
make any service intervention during the unit operation as well as ordinary maintenance easy and safe.
COMPRESSORS
Compressors are of semi-hermetic screw type, equipped with capacity steps, motor thermal protection, phase monitor, crankcase heater. Compressors
lubrication is of forced type without pump, to avoid excessive oil migrations to the cooling circuit, compressors are equipped with oil separator on discharge side.
The electrical motor is prearranged for low inrush current start and in this case the unit is equipped with an automatic partial load start device and mechanical
interlock of the inrush control switches in order to avoid accidental short circuits (Option DS or PW).
HEAT- EXCHANGE EXTERNAL COILS
Heat- Exchange external Coils with micro nned (ried) copper tubes and aluminium ns with special corrugation for an higher heat exchange efciency. In
the PAH Ka evapo-condensing coils, the ns spacing is high, to avoid a sudden freezing in winter operation with consequential efciency decrease. The nned
exchangers are suitably sized with a wide exchange surface, so to allow the unit operation also at very high external air temperatures in summer operation and
low ones in winter operation. In case of installation in very aggressive environments, several coil protection treatments are available on demand.
USER SIDE EXCHANGER
Shell & tube exchanger of dry expansion type with pure electrolytic copper tubes and plate carbon steel shell. The exchanger is equipped with a condensa-
tion-proof insulation, made by close cell polyurethane foam material as well as an external UV ray-resistant and scratch-proof cover. Inside the shell some
plastic corrosion-proof bafes are suitably placed. They favourite a right water distribution and make the tube bundle particularly strong and vibration-free, even
with very high water ows. The exchanger design pressure (waterside) is 10 bar.
AXIAL FANS
The fans, servicing external heat-exchanger coils, are of axial type, with directly coupled three-phase totally closed electric motor. They have got IP54 protection
degree, class F and are provided with internal thermal protection which is drowned in the electrical motor winding. The aluminium blades have got a peculiar
prole geometry designed to minimize the turbulences in the air detachment zone (reducing in this way the sound level and increasing efciency). Each fan is
equipped with suction nozzle and safety protection grid, painted after construction.
In the low noise version (RAH S Ka), in order to reduce the sound level, the electrical connection is of star type, reducing thereby the rotation speed and con-
sequently the air ow to the coil.
It is also possible requiring axial fans with electronic commutation (Option EC- only for RAH Ka series) which allow a continuous speed regulation through a
0-10 Volt Signal completely managed by the microprocessor. With this kind of fans the airow on the condensing coil is regulated with an higher precision, and
this allows the unit to work with external air temperature till -20°C keeping unchanged the cycle high efciency.
COOLING CIRCUIT
Each cooling circuit of RAH/PAH Ka series is equipped with:
• Filter drier;
• Sight glass;
• Electronic thermostatic valve (in PAH Ka series, it works in winter operation only);
• Mechanical thermostatic valve (in PAH Ka series, it works in winter operation only);
• PED approved liquid receiver (for PAH Ka series only);
• Suction side liquid separator (for PAH Ka series only);
• 4 ways cycle inversion valve (for PAH Ka series only)
• Certied (if required) high pressure valves;
• Shut-off valve on liquid line;
• High and low pressure gauges;
• High and low pressure switches;
• Temperature probes to evaporator in and outlet.
The above mentioned components are connected in a close circuit through copper pipes and connections. The permanent junctions among components are
made by brazing or welding, following qualied processes and made by qualied personnel.

ELECTRICAL BOARD
The electrical cabinet of the unit, is realized in compliance with current European Standards inside a metal compartment with protection degree IP54 suitable for
external installation and separated from airow.
The main features are:
- Three-phase power supply 400 V/ 3ph / 50 Hz on all the models(if not differently required);
- Low voltage auxiliary circuit 24Vac with insulation transformer;
- Lockable mechanical main switch;
- Protection automatic switches;
- Terminal box for signal and management free-contacts;
The opening panel of the a.m. electrical cabinet is equipped with main switch. Inside the compartment the following main components are also installed:
• Contactors;
• Automatic overload protection switches;
• Transformers;
• Numbered wires;
• Low voltage auxiliary circuit;
• Terminals;
• Management and control electronic cards.
All the unit are subject to a safety cycle with continuity tests on the protection circuit, insulation resistance and tension test (dielectric strength).
The unit management is realized by the management program uploaded in the electronic microprocessor.
The microprocessor is made up of:
A management control board with terminals for working parameters transmission and control devices activation;
A user interface board with programming buttons and graphic display to show working status and alarms;
The control electronic board manages all the devices installed in the unit on the values of the operation variables, with, inter alia, the following main functions:
• Unit ON/OFF from board or from remote position;
• Management and storage of alert and alarm statuses.
The user interface display of the microprocessor allows, inter alia, to see the following information:
• Working parameters set values,
• Functional variables values;
• Analogue and digital inputs and outputs status;
• Unit operation status;
• Alert and alarm indications;
Possibility to interface EMS/BMS management systems.

2.5 TEST
Once the unit is completed, its circuit is submitted, following the directives stated in the Manufacturer’s quality warranty system, to a mechanical sealing test and to
a leak test to nd leakages if present.
Before the shipment a complete functional test is carried out.

2.6 OPTIONS
Here below the main options which could be installed in RAH/PAH Ka series:
AAmperometer:Electrical device to measure the absorbed electrical current intensity.
AE Electricalpowersupplydifferentthanstandard:Especially 230 V three-phase, 460 V three-phase. Frequencies 50/60 Hz.
BT Lowambienttemperatureoperation(downto-8°C): Voltage-cut off Electronic device for the continuous modulating voltage control of the
condensing pressure through the variation of the fan rotation speed, allowing unit operation till -8°C (Alternative to BF and EC).
BF Inverter driven condensing pressure control (down to -20°C): for the modulating control of the condensing pressure through the
continuous variation of the fans rotation speed allowing unit operation till -8°C (Alternative to BF and EC).
CF Soundproofedcompressorscabinetwithstandardmaterial:Insulation of compressors by a cabinet with prole and panels made of
hot dip galvanized sheet and powder painted, coated with soundproong material ashlar type and vibration dampers under compressors. Access panels
can be easily opened thanks to a triangular wrench. (Available only for STANDARD version)
CFU CFU Soundproofed compressors cabinet with increased thickness material: Compressors cabinet insulation with re-and-
sound-proof material with high density and increased thickness (standard in low noise version).
CS Compressorsinrushcounter:Electromechanical device positioned inside the electrical board, recording the total inrush starts of compressors.
DS Star/Delta:Electric device of close transition type to reduce the inrush current, provided with short circuit safety by mechanical interlock.
EC Axialfanswithelectroniccommutatedmotor:Made of high-performance composite material, with external rotor directly coupled to a three-
phase electronically commutated motor (EC), they continuously regulate the speed through a 0-10V signal, completely managed by the microprocessor.
Thanks to a more accurate adjustment of air ow, they allow the unit operation with an external air temperature up to - 20 °C. (Alternative to BT and BF;
Available only for RAH Ka range)
GP Condensingcoilprotectiongrid:Metal painted grid to protect against accidental impacts.
GP1 Technical compartment protection grid: Metal grid to protect the compressors section against accidental impacts if the soundproofed
compressor cabinet is not provided.
GP2 Technical compartment protection grid: Metal grid to protect the compressors section against accidental impacts if the soundproofed
compressor cabinet is provided.
IH RS485Serialinterface:Electronic card to be connected to the microprocessor to allow connection of the units to external CAREL supervision
systems for a remote control and service of the unit.
IM Seawoodpacking:Fumigated seawood case and lm added with slowly vaporizing corrosion inhibitors completely nitrates and heavy metals (VCI)
free, suitable for long sea transports.
LI Liquidinjection:Mechanical device allowing a better compressors cooling at very high compression level operation.
M12÷M25 Modulatingcapacitycontrol:By means of some valves installed on compressors, depending on their quantity, the capacity is modulated from
12-25% to 100%.
MV Buffertank:Of suitable capacity provided with expansion vessel, safety valve, water gauge, water charge and discharge valves, air purging valves.
OS Oilowsafetyswitch:In-built in the compressor oil separator, it signals any decrease of the oil level.
P1 Pumpgroup:Chilled water pump group consisting of a single pump, expansion vessel, safety valve water gauge, water charge and discharge valves,
air purging valves, electric pump drive. The pump is of mono-bloc centrifugal 2-pole type for standard version, 4-pole for S version.

separate electric motors. The hydraulic kit consists of an expansion vessel, safety valve, water gauge, water charge and discharge valves, air purging
valves, electric pump drive. The pumps are of mono-bloc centrifugal 2-pole type for standard version, 4-pole for S version.
PF Safetywaterowswitch: Installed on evaporator, it switches off the unit in case of water ow rate lack too the evaporator.
PA Rubber-typevibrationdampers:Bell-shaped vibration dampers supports for isolating the unit (supplied in kit), consisting of base and bell made
up of galvanized steel and natural rubber mixture.
PM Spring-typevibrationdampers:Spring-type vibration dampers support, for insulating the unit (supplied in kit), mainly indicated for installation
in difcult and aggressive environments. Made of two steel plates containing a suitable quantity of harmonic steel springs.

PQ Remote display: Remote terminal, allowing to display the temperature values detected by probes, the alarm digital inputs, the outputs and the
remote ON/OFF of the unit, as well as to change and programs the parameters, and to signal and display any occurred alarm.
PW Part-Winding:Equipment for step compressors starting, reducing compressor inrush current.

2.9 SOUNDLEVELS
The unit can autonomously and automatically work so no operator is required.
It is therefore not required supplying the sound data in the command station; in the technical datasheet it is specied the weighted average value of the sound pressure
level, at 1 m from the unit in free eld, at full load operation.

3. INSTALLATION
The unit installation place must be chosen in compliance with local laws and regulations in force.
3.1 IDENTIFICATION
The unit can be identied thanks to the Identication Tag, previously exemplied and described, which is positioned inside the electrical cabinet.
The right identication of the unit, thanks to its serial number, is essential for carrying out any intervention on the unit and, in particular, it must
always be communicated to the Manufacturer, together with the technical support request.
3.2 RECEIPT AND INSPECTION
At receipt, immediately verify, through a visual inspection, that the unit is not damaged. If some damages /defects are found, accept the goods with reservation,
describing on the delivery note, the defects you have found and asking the forwarder to sign the notes for conrmation.
Any claim on the delivered goods must be sent to the Manufacturer within 8 days from goods receipt by e-mail, fax a or registered mail.
3.3 HANDLING
The handling of the unit must be done by skilled personnel, with equipment suitable to the machinery weight and dimension. During the handling, the unit must be
always kept in vertical position, with the base frame parallel to the ground.
The weight of some models could be unbalanced, therefore it could be required to check the unit stability before starting the handling.
For moving the equipment, the indication in the gures here below must be followed.
Lift the unit vertically, avoiding jerks and keep a speed suitable to the charge, in order to avoid to damage it.
For the units equipped with 8 base eyebolts, you need to use a sling bar (of suitable dimensions) with 4 connections for ropes. The interaxle spacing of
the sling bar connections must constitute an angle opening not larger than 30°on the upper side of the ropes.
If lifting is made through belts, ropes or bands, these must not make an excessive tractive effort on the unit, which can cause damages or breakings.

Before starting to move the unit for positioning it, choice the most suitable way, taking into consideration the unit overall dimension and weight, as well as the avai-
lable lifting equipment and the options dimensions.
3.4 Positioning
The installation of the unit is at Owner’s charge and must be done under his own responsibility. A well done installation presupposes that a plan had been drawn up
by a professional and that it is carried out by skilled and trained technicians.
The ambient the unit is installed in, must be free from any aggressive substance or anyway those ones which are not compatible with copper, carbon
steel, aluminium and all the other materials the units is made up of. If any doubt arises, carry on specic chemical analyses sending the result to the
Manufacturer, in order to nd an agreement on required measures.
The unit installation must be done in compliance with local existing laws.
Before placing the unit, the following points must be checked:
• The oor where the machine is placed on, can bear the unit total working weight;
• Enough space is left around the unit for ordinary and extra-ordinary maintenance as here below shown;
• Electrical and hydraulic connections have already been pre-arranged.
The equipment has been planned to be installed and to work outdoor.
The base of the unit, while working, must be horizontal; the max acceptable inclination is 5° in length and width direction.
