is document provides step-by-step instructions for installing Deep Freeze Mac on a single segment
Local Area Network. Following these instructions will allow you to have Deep Freeze Mac installed and
running within a few minutes. is document is not a substitute for the user guide!

What is Deep Freeze Mac?
Deep Freeze Mac is a soware program that prevents any permanent changes from being made to a
machine. Deep Freeze Mac has two states: Frozen and awed. When Deep Freeze Mac is in a Frozen
state, any changes made to the machine are forgotten when the machine is restarted. When Deep
Freeze Mac is in a awed state, any changes made to the machine are retained when the machine is
restarted.
When making changes to a machine, such as installing soware or performing updates, the machine
needs to be put into a awed state. A reboot is required every time the state is changed.
Deep Freeze Mac can be deployed and controlled with Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) or any other
third-party utility that supports remote command line scripts.
System Requirements
Deep Freeze Mac requires Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.11, Leopard v10.5.1 and up, or Snow Leopard v10.6.0
and up. Deep Freeze Mac is a Universal application (Intel and PPC compatible). ARD integration
requires Apple Remote Desktop version 2.2 or later. A minimum of 256 MB RAM is recommended.
Installing Deep Freeze Mac
Installation and configuration of Deep Freeze Mac requires administrative access.
Deep Freeze Mac is distributed as a downloadable file via the Internet.
To install Deep Freeze, complete the following steps:
1. Double-click the installation package to begin the installation process.
2. Follow the steps presented, and read and accept the license agreement.
3. Click Install and Deep Freeze is installed on the computer.
e computer restarts to complete the installation.
Upon completion of a successful installation and aer the computer has been restarted, Deep Freeze is
automatically configured to put all drives and partitions into a Frozen state. e drives and partitions
that are to be put in a awed state must be specified using the Deep Freeze Controller aer the
install.

Getting Started
Using the Deep Freeze Mac Controller
If all drives and partitions are Frozen on a machine, a user can create, save, change, and delete files.
However, all changes are temporary. e complete contents of a Frozen drive or partition are restored
at restart.
All changes made in the Deep Freeze Controller only take effect aer a restart.
To launch the Deep Freeze Controller, browse to Applications > Faronics > DFXControl, and double-
click the DFXControl icon .
Creating the First User
1. Unless a Deep Freeze user (DF User) was created using the Deep Freeze Assistant, the first
time Deep Freeze Controller is launched, there are no DF Users present. A prompt appears
to create a user.
2. Click Create DF User.
3. Enter a user name and password, and verify the password.
e first user created automatically has all available privileges.
4. Click OK to complete creating the first user.
5. Aer the first user has been created, the Deep Freeze Controller Login window appears.
Enter a valid DF User Name and password and click OK to continue.
6. e Deep Freeze Controller screen appears.
Boot Control Tab
e Boot Control tab contains radio buttons used to change the status of Deep Freeze on a machine:
•To set the machine to a Frozen state, choose Boot Frozen
•To set the machine to a awed state, choose Boot awed
To save any changes made, click Apply. e changes take effect aer a restart.
Drives Tab
When the Drives tab is selected, Deep Freeze searches the machine and lists the drives present on a
machine. e drives listed can be put into a Frozen state or a awed state. All drives on the machine
are initially Frozen by default. To save any changes made, click Apply. e changes take effect aer a
restart.
ThawSpace Tab
awSpace is an area on a Frozen drive where documents and changes are saved permanently.
Administrators can create a personal awSpace for each local user, or a global awSpace that all
local users can share.
Schedule Tab
e Schedule tab is used to configure a Maintenance period when the computer will be automatically
awed to allow Apple Soware Updates to be permanently applied. is schedule can occur on a
repeating or one-time basis; users can be warned that a Maintenance period is about to occur.
DF Users Tab
e DF Users tab allows administrators to manage the Deep Freeze users present on a machine. ere
are a maximum of four users permitted on each machine.

Getting Started
Uninstall Tab
A machine must be in a awed state for the Uninstall option to be available. If the machine is in a
Frozen state, the Uninstall option is not available.
To uninstall Deep Freeze, click Uninstall on the Uninstall tab. e computer restarts and Deep Freeze
is uninstalled.
All components, including awSpaces, are permanently deleted when Deep Freeze is
uninstalled.
Using Deep Freeze
Aer Deep Freeze has been installed and a configuration has been assigned to a partition,the computer
can be operated as usual. e only visual evidence that Deep Freeze is installed on a machine are the
presence of a Deep Freeze icon in the menu bar (if configured) and the Deep Freeze icon badge on each
Frozen hard drive (if configured).
Users can make changes to the machine, including renaming or deleting files and folders, downloading
files from the Internet, changing the desktop, and more. However, the Frozen drives and partitions are
completely restored to their original configurations and contents at restart.
Deep Freeze Icons
When Deep Freeze is installed, the polar bear icon appears in the menu bar, if the icon has been
configured to appear:
e Frozen polar bear icon indicates that the machine is currently Frozen.
e awed polar bear icon indicates that the machine is currently awed.
Saving Documents
On a Frozen machine, a user can permanently save documents to a awed partition, a awSpace, a
network location, or onto a CD-ROM, USB keychain drive, or USB/FireWire hard drive.
Software Installation and Permanent Changes
Permanent changes and soware installations can only be made to a awed machine or awed
partition on the machine. If a machine is in a Frozen state, any soware that has been installed will be
gone aer a restart.
A newly installed application should be run at least once while the machine is awed in order to
create a preference file, dismiss registration dialogs, and initialize various values. It may require the
computer to be restarted for setup to be completed. If this is the case, it is recommended to let the
computer restart, log in with the same user account, run the application once, and then log out before
setting the machine to reboot in a Frozen state.
Checking for Deep Freeze Updates
To check if your version of Deep Freeze is the most current one, select Help > Check For Updates. A
dialog appears, stating if your version is up to date or if there is a more current one available.
