YourCM24isdesignedsoyoucaneasilysetitupandstartusingitrightaway.

IfyouhaveneverusedCM24,readthischapterforinstructionsaboutgettingstarted.

Important:Readallthesetupinstructionsinthischapterandthesafetyinformationstartingonpage
30beforeyouplugyourCM24intoapoweroutlet.

Ifyouareanexperienceduser,youmayalreadyknowenoughtogetstarted.Makesureyoulookover

YourCM24comeswithonecinemaprocessorCM24,one7''touchscreen,onemounthardwarefor
touchscreen,onewirelessaccesspoint,oneCD(incl.manual,software),wiringandcables.



1.2ToolsYouNeedtoPreparebyYourself

Computer:built‐innetwork,andinstalledwithMicrosoftWindowsXP,WindowsVista,Windows7or
Windows8.

RTA:anytypesofreal‐timeanalyzer.

Microphone:astraightfrequencyresponsecurveisrequiredifpossible.

Microphonestand:anysuitabletypes.

Signalcable:anysuitabletypes.



Chapter2:SettingUpYourCM24

FollowthesestepstosetupyourCM24.

Step1:ConnectingtheWirelessAccessPointtoYourProcessor
ConnectthenetworkcablefromanETHERNETportonyourCM24processortooneoftheLANports
onthewirelessaccesspoint.Thenplugthepowercordsofbothintothepoweroutlet.

Step2:PressthepowerbuttonatthebacktoturnonyourCM24processor.Turnonthe
wirelessaccesspoint.Thenpressthepowerbuttononthetoptoturnonyourwirelesstouchpad.To
rechargethetouchpad,plugtheMiniUSBchargercordintothetouchpad.

Step3:Connectingtheprocessortothewirelesstouchpad
Pressandholdthereddotintheupperrightcornerofthetouchscreen,anddragittotheleft;a
pop‐upwindowappearswithalistofprocessorstoallowyoutoselectyourprocessor.Thenselectthe
processoryouwanttoconnect.Afterasuccessfulconnection,thereddotturnsgreen.

Step4:Installingthesoftware
SystemRequirements
TheCM24setupsoftwarerunsonMicrosoftWindowsXP,WindowsVista,Windows7orWindows
8.
.NETFramework3.5orthenewestversionisrequired.Ifyourcomputerdoesnothave.NET
Framework3.5,butyourcomputerisalreadyconnectedtotheInternet,thenyoucanbeginto
installCM24controlsoftware.Theinstallationprogramwillbeautomaticallydownloadedand
install.NETFramework3.5foryourcomputer.

Installation
PuttheinstallationCDintoyourCDdriveonyourcomputerordownloadthesoftwarefrom
www.focux.us,opentheFocuxPanelfolder,double‐clicksetuptostarttheinstallationandfollowthe
instructionstocompletetheinstallation.Whentheinstallationprocedurefinishes,thesoftwarewill
startimmediately.

Important:CM24controlsoftwarecannotrunwithoutnetwork.Soifyourcomputerdoesnothave
anynetwork,ornetworkisdisabled,orthenetworkisenabledbutitisnotconnectedtoanynetwork,
thenthesoftwareisjustinstalled,butstillcannotrun.AnytimeyouwanttorunCM24controlsoftware,
yourcomputermustbeconnectedtoanetwork(forexampleCM24processors,wirelessaccesspoints,
routers,Internetoranyothernetwork).

Important:Beforestarting,checkallequipmentsthoroughly,includingspeakers,amplifiers,power
supplies,signalcablesandspeakercables,makesuretheconnectionsofalltheequipmentsarecorrect
andfirm.Checkthenoiseoftheair‐conditioning,andtrytolessenit.

PleasecalibrateyourownRTA,andthenstartthefollowingtuning.

3.1Step1:RunningCM24ControlSoftware
ConnectthenetworkcablefromanETHERNETportonyourcomputertooneoftheLANportsonthe
wirelessaccesspoint(orconnectyourcomputertoyourCM24vianetwork).

ClickWindowsStartmenu‐Focux‐CMPaneltorunCM24controlsoftware,thedefaultGUI
afterstartupisshownasbelow.WhenthesoftwareisnotconnectedtotheCM24processor,allcontrol
componentsaredisplayingingrayandcannotbecontrolled.




ClickthemenuDevices‐DeviceManagement,apop‐upwindowNetworkManagementappears,
justselectthedeviceyouwanttooperate.Alternatively,youwanttodefineadevicenameornetwork
configuration.
Tip:Agreenlightindicatestheprocessorisconnected.Aredlightindicatestheprocessoris
disconnected.Ayellowlightindicatesthenetworkconfigurationoftheprocessorisincorrectorany
malfunction.

WhenthesoftwareissuccessfullyconnectedtoanyCM24processor,thecontrolcomponentsin
theinterfacebecomecontrollable.



NOTE:Thepinknoisevolumeisnotcontrolledbymainvolumefader.




AftertheconnectionbetweenCM24andthecomputer(greenlightison),right‐clickthe
processorblocktoopenthedrop‐downcontextmenuandselectDevicesSetup


Apop‐upwindowNetworkDeviceDetailappears.Youcandefinethedevicename,security
configurationandnetworkconfiguration.


IfyournetworkhasmorethanoneCM24processor,youmustcompleteDevicesSetup
foreachprocessor.ThenselectthemenuDevices‐DeviceConnect,clicktheprocessoryouwant
toconnect.


ClicktheCrossovertabonthenavigationbar,apop‐upawindowappearsaskingfora
password,enterthepassword1234tostarttheCrossoverscontrolpanel.



Eachchannelhasawealthoffunctions.Ingeneral,theset‐upordercanbeHPF,LPF,Limiter,Gain,
DelayandAPF.Theoperationisasfollows:

A. SettheCrossoverPointoftheHighFrequencyforLeft,CenterandRightChannels

AdjustthecrossoverpointforFreqinHPF,andthenselectthetype,finallyselecttheslope.
Tip:Ifyouareusingpassivespeakers,youdonotneed“L.C.R‐Hi”anymore.


B. SettheCrossoverPointoftheLowFrequencyforLeft,CenterandRightChannels

AdjustthecrossoverpointforFreqinLPFandHPF,andthenselectthetype,finallyselectthe
slope.
Tip:Ifyouareusingpassivespeakers,youhavetobechoose“L.C.R‐Low”asmainoutput.


C. SettheLimiterforLeft,CenterandRightChannels

AdjusttheThresholdvalues(calculatedwiththeattachedtool“Limiterthresholdcalculator”).
SettheAttackvalues:Highfrequency:10msto30ms,lowfrequency:50msto80ms.
SettheReleasevalue:Thevalueequalto10timesoftheAttackvalue.
Tip:IfyoudonotneedtousetheLimiter,settheThreshold,AttackandReleasetothemaximum
value.



ClickGainandDelaytabonthenavigationbar,itwillswitchtotheGainandDelaycontrolpanel.

AdjustGainfaderontheL,RandCchannelstotheminimumvalue.ClickPinkNoisebuttononC
channelandslowlypullGainfadertotherighttoincreaseitsvalue,youshouldbeabletohearthe
noisefromCchannel.
ContinuetoadjusttheGainfaderuntiltheSPLontheRTAreach75dBonCchannel,andthenstop
thepinknoiseonCchannel.SetthesameonLandRchannelsandtheSPLis75dB.

Finally,clickCrossovertabonthenavigationbar,switchbacktotheCrossovercontrolpanel.

ClickthePinkNoisebuttononCchannel,checkthevolumeofthehighfrequencyandlow
frequencyonyourRTA,andadjustthesamevolumeforbothfrequenciesbypushingtheGain
fader.
Stopthepinknoise.





3.3.2OptimizingtheSubwooferandSurroundSpeakers


Accordingtothedifferenceofyourspeaker’sfrequencyresponse,youcanmakegooduseofHPF
andLPFtocutoffsomehighandlowfrequencyinordertooptimizeyourspeakersound.



Atthesametime,youshouldalsosettheLimiterparameterstoprotectthespeakersystem.
1. SettheLimiter:AdjusttheThresholdvalues(calculatedwiththeattachedtool“Limiter
thresholdcalculator”).
2. SettheAttackvalues:Surround:30msto50ms,subwoofer:80msto100ms.
3. SettheReleasevalue:Thevalueequalto10timesoftheAttackvalue.
Tip:IfyoudonotneedtousetheLimiter,settheThreshold,AttackandReleasetothemaximum
value.



3.3.3AdjustingthePhaseofEachChannel(optional)

EachchannelhasAPF(i.e.all‐passfilter).Thisisasignal‐processingfilterthatpassesallfrequencies
equally,butchangesthephaserelationshipbetweenvariousfrequencies.Itdoesthisbyvaryingits
propagationdelaywithfrequency.



ClickPinkNoisebuttononthechannel,useacousticanalysissoftwaretomeasurethephasecurve,
adjusttheFrequency,DegreeandBandwidthparametersonAPF,sothatthephaseofeach
frequencykeepsconsistent,andthenstopsthepinknoise.Thisoperationisrepeatedoneach
channel.

Setthedelayofhighfrequencyorlowfrequencyforscreenchannel(L.C.R‐HiorL.C.R‐Low):Click
PinkNoisebuttononCchannel,useacousticanalysissoftwaretomeasurethephasecurveof
them.Adjustthedelaysothatthetwophaseskeepconsistent,andthenstopthepinknoise.


4.Repeatprocedures1,2and3fortheLandRchannels,settingtheChannelLevelto85dB.
5.Repeatprocedures1,2and3fortheLs,Rs,Bsl,andBsrchannels,settingeachtoread82dB.
Note:Therearetwomodesofsurroundwhicharecorrespondingtothoseofthetouchpad,andyou
mustmanuallyswitch5.1and7.1onthetouchpad,tocompletethetwoindividualvolumesetting.
6.Repeatprocedure1,2and3fortheSWchannel,settingtoread85dB.
7.Finally,settheDelay:ThisisGlobalAudioDelay.Usethistosynchronizetheaudiowiththevideo
fromdigitalcinemaprojectors.SettheGlobalAudioDelaybetween0and500ms,thisdelayvalueis
setindependentlyforeachAESinput.

NOTE:Thesurrounddelayissetbasedonthelengthandwidthoftheauditorium(calculatedwiththe
attachedtool“Surrounddelaycalculator”).

3.5Step5:RoomEqualization

TheCM24providesapowerfulequalizer,includingparametricEQandgraphicequalizer.

Thefollowingintroduceshowtheinternalpinknoisegeneratoradjuststheequalizer.Thegoalistomake
theRTAshowXcurve(SMPTE202M‐1998).Youcanjustusetheparametricequalizer,oronlyuseagraphic
equalizer,ortogether.ThreemethodscanhelpyouachievetheXcurve.


MicrophonePlacement:Microphoneshouldbeplacedinthelisteningenvironment.Placeeachmicrophone
inthereverberantsoundfield,ratherthanreceivingdirectsoundfromthespeaker.Placefourmicrophones
infourdifferentlocationsoftheroom,toformanasymmetricquadrilateral.Donotplaceanymicrophone
incenterlineoftheroom.Roomequalizationusingonlyonemicrophoneisnotrecommendedbecauseof
roommodes.Usingfourmicrophonesandmicrophonemultiplexorwillallowforthebestsoundforthe
greatestnumberofseatsintheroom.


3.5.1AdjustingtheParametricEqualizerPanel

ClickthePEQforScreenorPEQforSurroundtabonthenavigationbar

Thisistheparametricequalizercontrolpanel.CM24hasitsuniquefeaturewith8‐bandforeach
channel,whichallowsuserstocontrolthethreeprimaryparameters:EQLevel,Frequencyand
Bandwidth.TheEQLevelofeachbandcanbecontrolled,andtheFrequencycanbeshifted,and
Bandwidth("Q")canbewidenedornarrowed.Parametricequalizersaremakingmuchmoreprecise
adjustmentstosoundthanotherequalizers.

Important:Inthisstep,youmustrepeatthefollowingproceduresforeachchannel.

1.ClickthePinkNoisebuttonononechanneltomakeitactivepinknoise.
2.StartwithEQLevelat0dBandobservetheworstpeakwithintheRTA.AdjusttheFrequencyknob
untilthefrequencymatchesthepeak,andthensettheEQLeveltoflattenthatregion.Adjustthe
Bandwidth(Q),untilthesmoothestresponseisachieved.
3.Adjusteachband’sparametricequalizeronthischanneluntilthefrequencyresponseonRTAmatch
(orcomecloseto)Xcurve.
4.ClickthePinkNoisebuttononthischanneltostopthepinknoise.

Tip:IfusingaparametricequalizercanachieveorcomeclosetotheX‐curve,itisnotnecessarytouse
thegraphicequalizer.

Thegraphicequalizer(asshownabove)iscalleda1/3‐octaveequalizerbecausethecenterfrequencyof
itsfiltersisspacedone‐thirdofanoctaveapart,threefilterstoanoctave.

ClickthePinkNoisebuttontoactivatethepinknoise,adjustthegraphicequalizeroneachchannel
(exceptthesubwoofer)untilthefrequencyresponseonRTAmatchorcomeclosetoXcurve.
Thenstopthepinknoise.

Tip:Observeadjacentbandeffectswhenadjustingindividualfrequencies.Beawareoffrequency
bandsthatareverydifferentfromneighboringbands,andusecautionsoasnottoovercompensate.


