Using SerialATARAID
ThismotherboardadoptsAMDSB600 southbridgechipsetthatsupports
Serial ATA(SATA)harddisk.For optimalperformance,pleaseinstall identical
drivesofthe samemodeland capacitywhencreating aRAIDset.
1.Introduction
RAIDBasics
RAID(RedundantArrayofindenpendentDisks)isamethod ofcombining
twoharddisk drives intoone logicalunit .Theadvantageof anArrayisto
providebetterperformanceordatafaulttolerance.Faulttoleranceis
achievedthrough dataredundantopration,whereifonedrives fails,a
mirroredcopyofthe datacan befound on theotherdrive. Thiscanprevent
datalossiftheoperatingsystemfailsorhangs.Theindividualdiskdrives
inanarrayarecalledmembers.Theconfiguration information ofeath
memberisrecordedinthereservedsectorthatidentifies thedriveas a
member.All diskmembersinaformeddiskarrayarerecognizedas a
singalphsicaldrivetotheoprating system.
Harddiskdrivescanbecombinedtogetherthroughafewdifferent
methods. Thedifferentmethodsarerefferedtoas differentRAIDlevels.
DifferentRAIDlevelsrepresentdifferentperformancelevels,security
levelsand implementation costs.TheRAIDlevelswhich theAMDSB600
SATA RAIDHostControllersupportsare RAID0,1,0+1andJBOD.
RAID0(Striping)
RAID0readsand writes sectorsofdatainterleavedbetween
multipledrives.Ifanydiskmemberfails,itaffectstheentirearray.Thedisk
arraydatacapacityisequaltothenumberofdrivememberstimes the
capacityofthesmallestmember. Thestriping block size canbesetfrom
4KBto64KB.RAID0does not support fault tolerance.
RAID1(Mirroring)
RAID1writesduplicatedataontoapair ofdrives and readsbothsetsof
datainparallel.Ifoneofthemirroreddrives suffersamechanicalfailure

ordoesnotrespond ,theremaining drivewill continuetofunction. Dueto
redundancy,the drivecapacityofthe arrayisthecapacityof thesmallestdrive.
UnderaRAID1setup,anextradrivecalled thesparedrivecanbe attached.
Suchadrive will be activatedtoreplaceafaileddrive thatispart ofamirrored
array.Duetothefaulttolerance,if anyRAID1drivefails,dataaccesswillnot
beaffectedas long as thereareotherworking drivingsinthearray.
RAID10 (0+1)
RAID10 isacombination ofstriping andmirroring.Thisconfigurationprovides
optimalspeedandreliability,but youneed fourSATA harddisks.
JBOD(Spanniing)
Aspanningdiskarrayisequaltothesumofthe all drives whenthedrives
usedarehaving differentcapacities.Spanning stores dataontoadriveuntil it
isfull,thenproceeds tostorefiles ontothe nextdriveinthe array.Whenany
diskmemberfails,thefailureaffectstheentirearray.JBOD isnotreallya
RAIDand does notsupport faulttolerance.

4.Press <F10>tosavethe BIOSsettingand exit theBIOSsetup program.
2.InstallingSATAHardDisks
DifferentRAIDmode needsdifferentnumberoftheSATAharddisks.You need
twoSATAharddiskstosupportRAID0andRAID1. AndRAID0+1needs four
SATA harddisks.ForJBOD, two, threeorfour SATA harddisksareallright.
STEP1: Install theSATAharddisksintothedrivebays.
STEP2: Connectoneendofthe SATAdatacableor the 90tothe
motherboard sprimarySATAconnector.
STEP3: Connect the otherendof the SATAdatacabletothemasterSATA hard
disk.
PleaseconnecttheotherSATAharddisks as STEP2 and STEP3.
3.BIOSConfigration
Enter BIOSSetup program
1.Start upthecomputer,thenentertheBIOSsetup programbypressing the
<Del>keyduringthePOST(Power-OnSelf-Test).
2.Select the IntegratedPeripherals item,thenpress<Enter>.
3.Switchthe OnchipSATAType option to [RAID].

4.RAIDBIOSSetup
AfterrebootingyourPC,wait until youseethe RAIDsoftwareprompting you to
press <Cntrl-F>toenterFastBuild(tm)utility.TheRAIDpromptappearsas
partof thesystemPOSTand boot process prior toloading OS.
Press<Cntrl-F>keytoenterUserWindow!
Themainmenu ofFastBuild(tm)utilityisas below.
A.DeleteLD
Beforecreating the newRAIDmode,Please deletetheoldRAIDmode atfirst.
You canuse thefollowing steps.
STEP1:Inthemianmenu of FastBuild(tm)utilitypress3,thenyou willsee
the DeleteLDMenu.

Note:
Thisoperationwilldeleteall the datafromharddisk,so pleasetake
care.
B.DefineLD
TheAMDSB600supports RAID0,RAID1,RAID0+1andJBOD. Select “2”to
enter DefineLDMenu and selecttheLDnumber
Press “Enter”tocreateRAID.
STEP2:IntheDeleteLDMenu,selectamemberof an arrayand press
<Del>.Thenawarningmessagewillshowup and press “Y”todeleteit
orpress”N”tocancel.

ToCreateRAID0+1
Press the[Space]key toselecttheRAID0+1modelin[DefineLDMenu].
Thenpress the[]keytoset the assignments. TocreateRAID0+1,you need
set atleastfourdrives to “Y”inthe[Drives Assignments].Thenthe “TotalDrv”
willshowthenumberofthe driverswhich havebeensettoRAID0+1.
ToCreateJBOD
Press the[Space]keytoselecttheJBODmodelin[DefineLDMenu].Then
press the[] keytosetthe assignments. TocreateRAIDJBOd,you needset
atleastone drive to “Y”inthe[DrivesAssignments].Thenthe “TotalDrv”will
showthenumberofthedriverswhichhavebeensettoJBOD.
Afteryoursetting ,Please Press<Cntl +Y> tosave the RAIDmodel.
C.ViewDrivesAssignments
Inthe mainmenuofFastBuild(tm)utilitypress 1.You will enterthe “View
Drives Assignments”.Thispageisusedtotell you thebasicinformation of
the drivesassignments.
ToCreateRAID0
Pressthe[Space] keytoselecttheRAID0model in[DefineLDMenu].Then
press the []keytosettheassignments.TocreateRAID0,youneedsetat
leastonedrive to “Y”inthe[Drives Assignments].Thenthe “TotalDrv”will
showthenumber ofthedriverswhich havebeensettoRAID0.
ToCreateRAID1
Press the[Space]key toselecttheRAID1modelin[Define LDMenu].Then
press the []keytosettheassignments.TocreateRAID1,youneedsetat

5.CreatingaRAIDDriverFloppyDisk
Afloppydiskwiththe RAIDdriver isrequired wheninstallingWindows2000/XP/
2003OperatingSystemonaharddiskdriverthatisincluded inaRAIDset.You
can make afloppydiskwiththeRAIDdriverbyyourself. Therearetwoways to
createtheRAIDdriver floppy.
Onthismotherboard
a.Insert the driverCDintoCD-ROMdriveunder WindowsOperationSystem.
b.ThedriverCD willautomaticallydisplaymainmenu screen.
c.Click “Utility”button.
d.Click “CreateRAIDDriver Floppy”button,thenyouwillseetheRAIDFlpy.txt .
e.ReadtheATIsection of the RAIDFlpy. txt, and find the pathofRaidTool.exe.
f.Insertonefloppyintoyour 3.5-inchstandardmodelFDD.
g.DoubleclicktheRaidTool.exe,thenyou will seethefollowingpicture.Click
“Go”tostart.
D.ViewDrivesAssignments
Inthe mainmenu ofFastBuild(tm)utilitypress4. You will enterthe “Control-
lerConfiguration”.Thispage isusedtotellyouthesystemresouceinformation.

i. Select floopydrive fromthe list, thenclick “OK”.

6.Install Operating SystemwithRAIDMode
a.SetRAIDmodeinFastBuild(tm)utility,exit theutility,thenreboot the
computer.
b.Insert theOSinstallation CDintotheCD-ROM.
c.Press the<F6> whenthefollowing pictures appear:
d.Press <S> keytospecifyadditionalequipmentwhenbelowpictureappears.
e.Insertthe RAIDinstallationdiskintofloppydiskdrivefollowingtheon-screen
instructionsandpress <Enter>toselect “ATI AHCICompatibleRAIDController
-X86platform”.

7.InitializingandUsingtheDisk Array
TheRAIDarrayisnowreadytobeinitializedunderWindows.
1.LaunchComputerManagementbyclicking “Start”—> “Settings”—> “Control
Panel”thenopenthe “Administrative Tools”folderanddoubleclick on “Computer
Management”.
Theactualdiskslistedwill depend on yoursystem,and the unallocatedpartitionis
thetotalcombinedstorageoftwoharddisks. You must formattheunallocateddisk
spaceinordertouse it.
3. Formattheunallocateddiskspace.Right click “Unallocatedspace”,select “New
Partition…” and followthewizard.Afterthedrivehas beenformatted,itisreadyfor
use.
2.Followscreeninstructionstoinstall.Whilefinished,the “ComputerManage-
ment”windowappears.
