Introduction
RAID(RedundantArray of Independent Disks)isamethod ofcombiningtwohard
diskdrives intoonelogicalunit. TheadvantageofanArrayistoprovidebetter
performanceordatafaulttolerance.Themotherboardcomes withtheIntelICH8R/
ICH8DH/ICH8DO. ThefollowingRAIDconfigurations areprovidedforusers.
RAID0(Striping)
RAID0readsandwrites sectorsofdatainterleavedbetweenmultipledrives.If any
diskmemberfails,it affectsthe entirearray.Thedisk array datacapacityisequal
tothenumberofdrivememberstimesthe capacityofthe smallest member. The
stripingblocksizecanbesetfrom4KBto128KB.RAID0doesnot support fault
tolerance.
RAID1(Mirroring)
RAID1writesduplicatedataontoapairofdrives and readsbothsetsofdatain
parallel.Ifoneofthe mirrored drivessuffersamechanicalfailureordoesnot
respond, the remainingdrivewill continuetofunction. Duetoredundancy,thedrive
capacityof the arrayisthecapacityof thesmallest drive.UnderaRAID1setup,an
extradrivecalledthe sparedrive”canbeattached.Such adrivewill be activatedto
replaceafaileddrivethat ispart of amirroredarray. Duetothefaulttolerance, if any
RAID1 drivefails, dataaccess willnotbeaffected aslong as thereareother
workingdrivesinthearray.
RAID5
RAID5Providesdatastriping atthe bytelevelandalsostripeerrorcorrection
information. Thisresultsinexcellentperformance and goodfault tolerance. Level
5isoneofthemostpopularimplementationsofRAID.
RAID10 (0+1)
RAID10 isacombination ofstriping andmirroring.Thisconfiguration provides
optimalspeedandreliability,but youneed fourSATA harddisks.
JBOD(Spanning)
JBOD(JustaBunch ofDisks)combines drives intolargerlogicalvolumes.Itpro-
vides no fault tolerance,nordoes itprovideanyimprovementsinperformance
comparedtotheindependentuse ofitsconstituentdrives.
