Introduction
Thank you for your purchase of a Gared Sports model Outer Limit Pro Portable backstop. To
ensure that our equipment will provide years of use to you, we are including this installation,
operation, and maintenance guide. This guide will provide information on the proper assembly
and installation methods, operating procedures, and preventative maintenance of your portable
backstop.
Please note that a Bill of Materials is being included with this guide. Please check that all of the
parts called out on the Bill of Materials are present prior to beginning assembly and setup.
Please do not substitute for factory parts. Please contact customer service department and allow
them to determine if substitute parts are acceptable.
It is recommended that an individual who has been properly trained perform assembly and set up
of the backstop. No one under the age of 18 should attempt assembly or set up of the unit, unless
properly supervised.
To prevent normal wear and tear from shortening the life of the unit, preventative maintenance
inspections and repairs should be performed at least once per year. If the units are subject to
high or unusual usage, inspections should be scheduled to occur more frequently. If items are
found to be nonconforming, replacements can be ordered from one of our authorized dealers.
When contacting your dealer, please have information regarding the name of the project, and any

*These suggested tools can be stored in the toolbox on the portable unit for routine
maintenance/adjustment or emergency goal or board change.
1. Unpack all parts and check for damage or missing items. Item numbers noted
throughout these instructions refer to the parts listed in the parts check list on page 5 and
pictured on page 6.
2. DO NOT remove Shipping Brace and/or Safety Pin until
all added equipment has been installed on the boom.
The unit’s spring assist has been adjusted at the factory to lift
a specific weight which includes the boom, board, goal,
padding, and any shot clock or signage that was specified at
the time of the order. The boom is shipped with a shipping
brace to lock it into position until the board, goal, and
any added equipment have been field installed. Releasing the shipping brace and
safety pin prematurely may cause the boom to lift uncontrollably, causing serious
personal injury and/or damage to the unit. The charts below will show the correct
springs and ballast to be used to counterbalance added boom equipment weight.

required for safe assembly of the backboard to the
unit.
1. Position the Quick Change Backboard
Bracket, item 14, to the back of the

2. Tighten these bolts securely to 15-20
ftlb [20-27 Nm].
2. Using the hardware supplied with the goal, insert the two carriage bolts through the top
goal mounting holes on the backboard and loosely install the nuts and washers on the
back side of the board as shown in figure2. Slide the goal over the carriage bolt heads
and over the studs on the front of the board. Install the flat washer, lock washer and nuts
on the studs and tighten to 9-11 ftlb [12-15 Nm]. Tighten the two top carriage bolts
securely to 15-20 ftlb [20-27 Nm].

includes the boom, board, goal, padding, and any shot clock or signage that was specified
at the time of the order. ttached these items if possible before proceeding to lift the unit
into position. Should they not be available, an object of similar weight can be attached to

LOCATING AND ADJUSTING UNIT
1. Using masking tape and pencil, Mark the location of the center of the court 4’-0” [1219
mm] from the inside edge of the court baseline (refer to figure 10). From this center
mark, establish a mark 3’-0” [914 mm] to the left and another mark 3’-0” [914 mm] to
the right. These marks will be used to align the face of bank to the court.
2. Push the unit to the playing location on the court.
The unit should be centered on the centerline of the
court as shown in figure 11. From the inside edge
of the court baseline to the front of the frame’s
Leveling Brackets, figure 12, should be about 4’-4
7/16” [1.332 m] for the model 9716 and 7’-0 7/16”
[2.145 m] for the model 9718.

adjust the ½” Leveling Screw in the board mounting
bracket as shown in figure 16 &17 until the backboard
is plumb. Tighten the locking nuts on the leveling bolt.
Tighten the two carriage bolts at the Brace Clamp, item
#11.
IMPORT NT NOTE:
-Failure to loosen board Brace Clamp, item 11, prior to
leveling board may cause board glass to break during
vertical level adjustment.
-Failure to adjust ½” Leveling Screw to support (touch) the
back of the Board Bracket may cause board glass to break
during heavy play.
5. To level the backboard in the horizontal plane,
loosen the four ½” bolts and the one ¾” bolt in
the center of the Quick-Change Bracket attached
to the boom. Refer to figure 17. Level the board

up exactly with the marks on the floor, adjust the location of the unit accordingly.
9. Once the unit is relocated and the plumb bobs are exactly on the marks located in step 1,
recheck all dimensions to make sure the 10’-0” playing height is correct and the face of
the backboard is 4’-0” in front of the court baseline.
10. Lower the Locator Pins to the “play position” touching
the floor. Mark the pin centers on the floor as shown in
figure 19.
11. Install the rear Tie Down Bolt, item 20, into the anchor
hole on the back of the unit frame. Mark the center of the
nchor on the floor as shown in figure 20.
12. Lift the Locating Pins, remove the safety pin from the
locking bar and lower the unit to the full down position and reinsert Safety Pin in the

through the rest of the floor (minimum of 1”
deep) at the center of each of the counter-
bores. See section view of finished hole in
figure 21.
16. Insert the brass Locating Bushings, item 18, into
the holes drilled in step 15. The top of Floor
Bushing must be flush with floor surface.
17. Move the unit back into the playing position.
Insert the Locator Pins into the floor inserts.
18. Install the rear anchor Tie Down Bolt, item 20, on
the rear of the unit and secure the anchor bolt to
the Floor nchor insert, item 19.
19. ttach the backboard padding to the backboard
using the instructions that are shipped with the
board padding.
20. Raise the unit to the playing position and insert
the safety pin into the sliding locking bar.
