content.Phosphatehelpsprevent
hard-watermaterialsfromforming

yourwaterishard(7grainsor
more),yourdetergenthastowork
harder.Detergentswithahigher
phosphatelevelwillprobablywork
better.Ifthephosphatecontentis
low(8.7%or less),you’llhaveto
useextradetergentwithhardwater.

youhow hardyourwateris. So
canyourcountyextensionagent.
Oryourarea’swatersoftener
company.Justcallandaskthem
howmany“grains”ofhardnessis
inyourwater.
Howmuch detergentshould you
use?Thatdepends.Isyourwater
“hard”or “soft”?Withhardwater,
youneedextradetergenttoget
dishesclean.Withsoftwater,you
needlessdetergent.
Toomuchdetergentwithsoftwater
notonlywastesmoney,itcanbe
harmful.Itcancauseapermanent
cloudinessofglassware,called

Keepyour detergent fresh and

Ifthisisyourfirstdishwasher,orif
you’rereplacingamucholder
model,youmaywonderhowmuch
pre-preparationyourdishesneed.
Actuallyverylittle.Pre-rinsingof
normalfoodsoilsisnotnecessary.
Withcommonsenseandalittle
practiceyou’llsoonknowwhat
foodstoremove.Herearesome
guidelines:
1. Scrapeoffbones,seeds,skins,
toothpicksandotherhardsolids.It
isalsobesttoremovehardshelled
vegetables,meattrimmings,leafy
vegetablesandcrusts.Remove
excessivequantitiesofoilor
grease.
2. Removelargequantitiesofany
food.Yourdishwasherhasabuilt-in
softfooddisposerthatpulverizes
softfoodbitsandflushesthemaway.
Itcanhandlesmallamountsof
softfoods,butlargeamountswill
bedifficulttohandle.
