coresrunningat1.0to1.5GHzwithdualDDR2memorycontrollers,serialfabric
andI/Ointerfaces.TheSBC330offersupto2GBytesofDDR2SDRAMwithECC,
upto256MBytesofFlashmemory,twoGigabitEthernetchannels,on‐board
serialcommunications(RS232),fourUSB2ports,twoSATA‐2.0portsandtwo
independentPCIExpresslinksroutedtotheVPXbackplane:adirect8‐laneport
forextremegraphicsapplications,anda4‐laneportroutedviaanon‐boardPCIe
switch.
TheMPC8641Disconnectedtoallon‐boardPCIdevicesusingPCIExpress.This
isahigh‐speedserialinterconnectrunningat2.5Gbits/second,providingatotal
bandwidthof1GBytes/secondtoandfromtheprocessor,throughanon‐blocking
switcharchitecture.PCIExpressissoftwarecompatiblewithPCIandbridgesare
usedwhereconnectiontoPCIorPCI‐Xcomponentsisrequired.

Power supply problems should be dealt with only by qualified personnel.

TheheatsinkisthermallybondedtotheICsandwillgenerallynotseparatefrom
theboardbyremovalofthescrewsalone.
Therearenouser‐alterablecomponentsunderneaththeheatsink,sousersshould
havenoreasontoremoveit.WiththeSBC330,theSODIMMcovermaybe
removedandreattachedbyauser.
Inrareinstancesausermaybespecificallyinstructedtoremoveaheatsinkcover
byGEstaff.However,thisdoesnotmeanthatusersshouldattemptreattachment
oftheheatsink,asthisrequiresprecisetorqueonthesecuringscrews.Over‐
tighteningthescrewsmaycausetheheatsinktodamagecomponentsbeneathit.
Removalandre‐attachmentoftheheatsinkshouldonlybecarriedoutbythe
factory.

3.1 Installation
SBC330boardsshouldonlybeinstalledinto3UVPXbackplanes.WiththeVPX
connectorstandard,greatcareshouldbeexercisedininstallationandremovalof
alldaughterboardsintothebackplanes.Theinsertionforcesaresignificant.
CAUTION
The SBC330 has been specifically designed for use with 3U VPX backplanes and is
not
compatible
with 6U backplanes. Plugging the SBC330 into a 6U backplane may cause permanent component
damage.
TheSBC330isnormallysuppliedwithround‐holeVPXguidesthatallowittobe
pluggedintoanyVPXbackplaneslot.
Manynew‐generationbackplaneshavesometrackingwithinthebackplanePCB
forfastI/OandsomayalsohavetrackingforexternalI/O,whichoperatesathigh
voltages.EnsurethattheslotintowhichtheSBC330boardispluggedisintended
forusebytheSBC330anddoesnothaveanyhighvoltageI/OinputsontheVPX
connectors.
TIP
GEIP supply universal backplanes that allow modules to be plugged into any slot. All I/O
connections are made with Rear Transition Modules and high specification cabling.
TheSBC330iselectricallycompatiblewiththepinlistingsinChapter9•.Carry
outallinstallationwiththepoweranddatacablesfullydisconnected.
NOTE
Only plug SBC330 boards into compatible system backplane slots.
Air‐cooledversionsoftheSBC330haveaninjector/ejectorhandletoensurethat
thebackplaneconnectorsmateproperlywiththebackplane.Thebestwayto
installabuildlevel1to3SBC330intoaconvectioncooledrackistousethe
leverageofthepurpose‐designedhandle.Thecaptivescrewsatthetopand
bottomofthefrontpanelallowtheboardtobetightlysecuredinposition,which
providescontinuitywiththechassisgroundofthesystem.
Buildlevel4and5boardsneedtobeinsertedwiththewedge‐lockswoundback
onlysofarasnottocontactthesides.Whentighteningthewedge‐locks,takecare
thatthecontactingbeamshavenotrotatedby90degrees.Thispossibilityhas
beenvirtuallyeliminatedonlaterdesignedheatsinks,butmaystillbepossible
(rotatedwedge‐lockswedgeagainstthewrongsurfaceandcancrackwhen
tightened.)Correctadjustmentrequiresacalibratedtorquewrenchwitha
hexagonalheadofsize3/32”(2.38mm),settobetween0.6and0.8Nm.
Inanair‐cooleddevelopmentenclosure,whentakingI/Oconnectionsfromthe
backplaneconnectors,useoftheGEIPSBC330RTMensuresoptimumoperation
oftheSBC330withregardtoEMI.

3.2 Cooling
CAUTION
SBC330 boards dissipate too much power to remain within operational temperatures if used
without a cooling mechanism at room temperature.
SBC330buildlevels1to3mustnotbepoweredunlessthereisairflowof300LFM
(levels1and2)or600LFM(level3)present.SBC330buildlevels4and5mustnot
bepoweredunlessthewedge‐lockssecuringthemtotheconduction‐cooled
chassishavebeentightenedtoprovideapathforheatflow.
CAUTION
Do not use SBC330 on an extender card unless there is a suitable fan to provide the required
airflow.
3.3 Power-up
3.3.1 Checklist
Beforepowering‐up,checkthattheuserjumpersareconfiguredasdesiredfor
boot.ThisisdescribedindetailinChapter4•.(Ifslotguidesaremissinginthe
rack,ensurethattheboardisorientatedcorrectly)
3.3.2 Power-up
TheSBC330board’spowerrequirementsareupto15A@5V(50W)from
VS3(VCC),operatingwithintheVPXSpecificationlimits(5V+5%‐2.5%).The
VPXP3V3_AUXvoltagerailisrequiredonlyforsupplyingtheRealTimeClockin
theabsenceofsystempower.
WARNING
Do not exceed the maximum rated input voltages or apply reversed bias to the assembly. If
such conditions occur, toxic fumes may be produced due to the destruction of components.
Youcannowpower‐uptheunit.AstheSBC330runsthroughitsbootsequence,
themonitor(COM1,COM2)shoulddisplaytheinitializationprogress.
3.4 Connecting to SBC330
TointeractwiththeSBC330,theminimumrequirementisacontrolterminalsuch
asPC‐basedWindows‘HyperTerminal’connectionpresentontheserialCOM1
port.AnEthernetconnectionisrequiredforHost/Targetinteractionuntilthe
kernel/applicationsoftwareisstoredinFlash.
AtGEIP,TeraTermisusedasitallowslongscrollbuffers,whichisusefulin
debug.
Fordevelopmentsystems,connectiontotheSerialandEthernetI/Ocanbe
achievedusingtheSBC330RTM‐11RearTransitionModule.Thisconvertsthe
pinoutoftheSBC330intheVPXbackplaneconnectorstoindustry‐standardI/O
connectors.

TheSBC330RTMhastwooptionsforserialI/O:asinglemini‐DB9connectorthat
hostsbothCOM1andCOM2isprovided,orviaa2x10‐wayheadersuitablefor
usewithGEIP’sSIOX600ribbontoDB9serialadapter.
COM1isconfiguredasDTEwithdefaultsettingsof9600baud,8bits/character,1
stopbit,paritydisabledandnoflowcontrol.
FortheEthernetports,aCAT5(orbetter)straight‐throughpatchcablefor10/100/
1000BaseTX.
TIP
The VPX I/O Modules Manual, publication number VPXIOM-0HH, contains more details on
fitting RTMs. Similar antistatic and safety precautions apply when handling and/or installing
I/O modules as for the SBC330.
3.5 Power Up Sequence
3.5.1 On-board sequencing
SeveralcomponentsontheSBC330receivemultiplepowersuppliesandrequire
PSUpower‐upandpower‐downsequencing.Theactualsequenceisdescribedin
detailinlatersectionsjustforuserinformationandpossibledebugofbluepower
LEDs.
TheSBC330usesaLattice1014AispPACPowerManagerdevicetosequencethe
on‐boardPSUs.Thedevicealsomonitorsthebackplanesupplyvoltagesandonly
turnsonanyon‐boardsuppliesoncethebackplanevoltageonVS3isabove4.49
Volts.
IftheBoardManagementMicrocontroller(BMM)assertstheBMM_OFFsignal,
thepowermanagerwillshutdownallon‐boardsupplies(exceptVCCand
P3V3_AUX).
Thepowermanagerisconnectedtotheon‐boardI2CBus2,allowingsoftware
read‐outofthevoltagesofallonandoff‐boardsupplies.
3.5.2 Inter-board sequencing
TheSBC330supportsinter‐boardpowersequencing,conformingtotheGEIP
internalspecification.Thisfeatureallowsfordifferentboardsinasystemtosee
thepower‐onconditionatdelayedtimes,reducingthesurgeloading/in‐rush
currentsonthesystembackplanePSU.ThisisachievedbythePSU_SEQ_OUT
andPSU_SEQ_INsignals,whichcanbedaisy‐chainedbetweenboards.
TheSBC330drivesthePSU_SEQ_OUTsignallow(‘0’)whenthebackplane
suppliesareoutofspecification,andholdsitlowuntilalloftheon‐board
suppliesarerunningandwithinthefirmwareprogrammablelimits.Ifthenext
boardintherackdoesnotpoweruntilitseesthesignalgohigh,itwillnotload
thePSUuntilthepowerfortheSBC330hasstabilized.
TheSBC330holdsoffallon‐boardsupplieswhenthePSU_SEQ_INsignalisheld
low.Thepower‐onsequenceisinitiatedifthePSU_SEQ_INsignalremainslow
500msaftertheoff‐boardsuppliesarewithinspecification,whichmayoccurifthe
previousboardinthechainfails.

jumperpinsmustbeconnectedusingwirewrapsandconformal‐coat.
4.1 Jumper Locations
TheSBC330hastwobanksof4x2‐wayjumpersthataffectbootingandneedtobe
setcorrectly.
4.2 Default Link Settings
TheSBC330isshippedfromthefactorywithsomelinksfitted.Thissimplifiesthe
mostlikelyuseoftheSBC330.Somejumpersareessentialandsomearenot.

NOTE
If you are about to install your board and power-up for the first time, leaving your board in the
default configuration will enable board operation to be proven prior to tackling any further
configuration issues.

TheP10headerisdedicatedtoFlashmemoryoptionswhichaffectbooting.
4.3.1 Flash software protection password visibility
Pins1and2mustbelinkedtoallowsoftwaretoaltertheSpansion‐termed
“persistentsectorprotection”,whichremainsunchangedfollowingaresetora
power‐cycle.SeeSection5.3.7 forfurtherdetails.Ifthelinkisnotfitted,the
softwareispreventedfromalteringanypreviouslyconfiguredsectorprotection,
becausethepasswordstoredintheFPGAismadeinvisibletotheSoftware.
ExaminationoftheFlashPasswordregisterrevealsASCIIcode‘DataSafe’ifthe
linkisfittedor‘locklock’ifthelinkisnotfitted.Thestateofthislinkisreflectedin
theFlashControlregister.
4.3.2 Flash password/Boot Sector protection
Withoutpins3and4beinglinked,nowriteaccessisallowedtothebootsector,
whichpreventsanyerroneoususersoftwareremappingofUserFlashareas,
overwritingbootsectorFlashinformation.Theaddressregionprotectedisthetop
8MByteregionofthelocalbus(0xFF800000to0xFFFFFFFF),whichcomprisesall
fouroftheseparate2MBytecore0bootsites.
4.3.3 Boot Flash image selection
TheBootFlashforprocessingcore0isdividedintofour2MBytesectionsnamed
Main,Alternate,Extended,andBANC(BootAreaNonCorruptible).Theseallow
forthreedifferentbootimagestobeloadedfromtheFlash,plus(whenavailable)
afactory‐programmedbootimagethatallowstheusertorecoverifanon‐
bootableimageiserroneouslyputintoFlash.Thedifferentbootimagesallowthe
boardtobootdifferentcodefrompowerup.Forinstance,itenablesGEIPto
programbothFunctionalTestCode(FTS)andVxWorksOperatingSystems
concurrentlyintothesameboardtoaiddiagnostics.Anotherexamplemaybeto
allowbootingasaPCIerootcomplexoraPCIeend‐pointoneitherofthetwo
PCIE‐Expressports,whichmaybeusefulinmulti‐boardapplications.
