CFCDisposal
Your old refiigeramr may have a cooling system
that used CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons). CFCs are
believed to harm sn'atospheric ozone.
If you are throwing away your old re@igerato_; make
sure the CFC refrigerant is removed for proper
disposal by a qualified servicm: lfyou intentionally
release this CFC refiigerant you can be subject to
fines and imprisonment under provisions of
environmental legislation.
USEOFEXTENSIONCORDS
Because of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend
against the use of an extension cord.
However, ify_u must use an extension cord, it is absolutely necessary that it be a UL-listed (in the United
States) or a (_@-listed (in Canada), @wire grounding type appliance extension cord having a grounding
type plug and outlet and that the electrical rating of the cord be 15 amperes (minimum) and 120 volts.

The power cord of this appliance is equipped with
a 3-prong (grounding) plug which mates with a
standard 3-prong (grounding) ,a_ll oudet to
minimize the possibility"of electric shock hazard
from this appliance.
Have the wall outlet and circuit checked by a
qualified electrician to make sure the oudet is
properly grounded.
If the outlet is a standard 2-prong oudet, it is your
personal responsibility" and obligation to have it
replaced with a properly" grounded 3-prong wall

The refrigerator should always be plugged into its
owql indMdual electrical oudet which has a voltage
rating that matches tim rating plate.
This provides the best performance and also
prevents overloading house wiring circuits which
could cause a fire hazard fi'om overheated wires.
Never unplug your refiigerator by pulling on the
power cord. _Mwaysgrip plug firmly and pull
sn'aight out from the outlet.
Repair or replace immediately" all power cords that
have hecome frayed or otherwise damaged. Do not
use a cord that shows cracks or abrasion damage
along its length or at either end.
When moving the refiigerator away from the
wall, be careful not to roll over or damage the
power cord.

When disconnecting the power cord from the

terminal is veiT likely to break with repeated use.

the refrigerator until a proper ground has been
established.

Aboutthe controlsonthe refrigerator. ._.OEApp,_,_._co,.
Initially, set the fresh food control at 5and the freezer control at 5 and
allow 12hours for the temperature to stabilize.
Several adjustments may be required. Adjust the controls one
increment at a time, and allow 12hours after each adjustment for the
refrigerator to reach the temperature you set.
Setting the freezer control to 0stops cooling in both the fresh food
and freezer compartments but does not shut off electrical power to
the refrigerator.
Control settings will vary based on personal preferences, usage, and
operating conditions and may require more than one adjustment,

Water Filter Cartridge
The water filter cartridge is located in the
back upper right corner of the refi'igerator
compartment.
When to Replace the Filter on
Models With a Replacement
Indicator Light
There is a replacement indicator light for
the water filter cartridge on the dispenser.
This light will turn orange to tell you that
you need to replace the filter soon.
The filter cartridge should be replaced
when the replacement indicator light turns
Place the top of the cartridge up
insidethecartridgeholderand red or if the flow of water to the dispenser
slowly turn it to the right or icemaker decreases.
When to Replace the Filter on

Installing the Filter Cartridge
O If you are replacing the cartridge, first
remove the old one by slowly turning it
to the lefL DOnotpull down on the
cartridge. A small amount of water may
drip down.
On models without a replacement
indicator light, apply tim month and
yeas"sticker to the new cartridge to
remind you to replace tim filter in six
months.
_Fill the replacement cartridge with
water fi'om the tap to allow for better
flow from the dispenser immediately
after installation.
_ Lining up the arrow on the cartridge
and the carwidge holdm; place the
top of the new cartridge up inside
the holdel: De net push it up into
the holdel:
_ Slowly turn it to the right until the filter
cartridge stops. DONOTOVERTIGHTEN.
As yvm turn the cartridge, it will
automatically raise itself into position.
Cartridge will roVateabout 1/2 turn.
Rt]n water from the dispenser for 3
minutes (about one and a half,gallons)
to clear tim system and prevent
sputtering.
_ Press and hold the RESETWATERFILTER
pad (on some models) on the dispenser
for 3 seconds.

Filter Bypass Plug
You must use the filter bypass plug
when a replacement filter cartridge is not
available. The dispenser and the icemaker
will ilot operate without dm filter or filter
bypass plug.

Adjustable bins can easily be carried from

Toremove:Lift the front of the bin up, then
pull out.
Toreplace or relocate: Engage the bin in the

Set control lever up to convert the pan
to normal refrigerator temperature and
provide exn'a vegetable storage space. Cold
air duct is turned ore Variable settings
between these extremes can be selected.
Set control lever downto the coldest setting
to store flesh meats. If lever is left in meat
position for a long period of time, some
fi'ost may form on the inside of the pan.

Crisper Removal
Crispers can easily he removed by"tilting up
slightly and pulling past stop location.
When replacing the crispers, make
sure you slide them through the
crisper guides,
Abouttheautomaticicemaker.
If the door prevents you from taking out
the crispers, the refrigerator will need to
be rolled forward until the door opens
enough to slide the crispers out. In some
cams, when you roll the refrigerator out,
you will need to move the refrigerator to
the left as you roll it out.
A newly-installed refrigerator may take 12-24 hours to begin making ice.
Automatic leemaker (onsomemodels)
_12qeicemaker will produce seven culx-s
per cycle_approximately 100-130 cubes
in a 24-hour period, depending on freezer
compartment temperature, room
temperature, immber of door openings
and otlmr use conditions.
If the refrigerator is operated before the
water connection is made to the icemake_;
set the power switch in the 0 (Off}position.
When the refrigerator has been coimected
to the water supply; set the power switch to
the I (on)position.
_l_e icemaker will fill with water when it
coots to 15°E A noMy-installed refrigerator
may take 12 to 24 hours to begin making
ice cubes.
_12qrowaway the first few batches of ice to
allow the w-ater line to clear.
Be sure nothing interferes witll the sweep
of the feeler arm.
It is normal for several cubes to bejoined
togetlmr.
If ice is not used frequently, old ice culx-s
will become cloudy, taste stale and shrink.
If ice cubes get snmk in the icemakel;the
green power light will blink. To correct this,
set the power switch to 0 (Off}and remove
the cubes. Set the power switch to Hen}to
restart the icemaker. _M'terthe icemaker has
been turned on again, flmre will be a delay
of about 45 minums before the icemaker
resumes operation.
NOTE:Inhomeswithlower-than-averagewater
pressure,youmayheartheicemakercyclemultiple
timeswhenmakingonebatchofice.

Toaccessice, pull the drawer out. Toremove the drawer, pull it straight out

Set the icemaker power switch to the
0(off) position. Pull the drawer straight
out and then lift past the stopposition.
Toreplace:
When replacing the drawm; make sure
to push it firmly into place. If it does not
go all the ,a-ayback, remove it and rotate
the drive mechanism 1/4 turn. _12qenpush
dm drawer back again.

Important FactsAbout YourDispenser
%Do not add ice fi'om trays or bags to
the storage bin. It may not crash or
dispense well.
NAvoid overfilling glass with ice and useof
narrow glasses. Backed-up ice can jam the
chute or cause the door in the chute to
freeze shut. If ice is blocking the chute,
poke it through with a wooden spoon.
N Beverages and foods should not be
quick-chilled in the ice storage bin.
Cans, bottles or food packages in the
storage bin may cruise the icemaker
or auger to jam.
NTo keep dispensed ice from missing
the glass, put the glass close to, but not
touching, the dispenser opening.
_ Some crushed ice may be dispensed even
though you selected CUBEDICE._12qis
happens occasionally when a few cubes
have been left in the cmshen
_N_ter crashed ice is dispensed, some
water may drip from the chute.
_ Sometimes a small mound of snow will
form on the door in the ice chute. _12qis
condition is normal and usually occurs
when you have dispensed crushed ice
repeatedly. _12qesnow will eventually
evaporate.

Cleaning the Outside
Thedispenserdriparea, (on some models)
beneath the grille, should be wiped dPfl Water
left in this area may leave deposits. Remove
Oisponsordriparea. tim deposits by adding undiluted vinegar to
tim well. Soak until the deposits disappear
or become loose enough to rinse away.
Thedispensercradle(on some models).
Before cleaning, lock the dispenser by"
pressing and holding the LOCKCONTROL
pad for 3 seconds. Clean with warm water
and baking soda solution--al)out a
tablespoon (15 ml) of baking soda m a
quart (1 1)ofwatel: Rinse thoroughly
and wipe dry:
The door handles and trim. Clean with a
cloth dampened with soapy water. DIT
with a soft cloth.
Keep the outside clean. Wipe with a clean
cloth lightly" dampened with kitchen
appliance wax or mild liquid dish detergent.
D W and polish with a clean, soft cloth.
Donot wipetherefrigeratorwith a soileddish
cloth or wet towel Thesemayleavea residue
thatcanerodethepaint. Donotusescouring
pads,powderedcleaners,bleachor cleaners
containingbleachbecausetheseproductscan
scratchandweakenthepaint finish.
Cleaning the Inside
TOhelp prevent odors,leave an open box of
baking soda in the fi'esh food and fi'eezer
compartments.
Unplugthe refrigerator before cleaning. If dais
is not practical, wring excess moisture out
of sponge or cloth when cleaning around
switches, lights or controls.
Use warm water and baking soda solution--
about a tablespoon (15 ml) of baking soda
to a quart (1 1)ofwatel: 'l]lis both cleans
and neutralizes odors. Rinse and wipe dry.
_ter cleaning the door gaskets, apply" a
thin layer of petroleum jelly to the door
gaskets at the hinge side. This helps keep
the gaskets from sticking and bending out
of shape.
Drainopeningin freezercompartment.
During yearly cleaning, remove bottonl
fi'eezer basket and flush a solution of
baking soda--1 Waspoon (5 ml) and 2 cups
(500 ml) of hot (not boiling) watm_
through dm drain line with the help of a
meat basmE _illis will help eliminate odor
and reduce the likelihood of a clogged
drain line. If drain becomes clogged, use a
meat basmr and baking soda solution to
force the clog through the drain line.

Condenser
There is no need fbr routine condenser
cleaning in normal home operating
enviromnents. Howew-_; in enviromnents
that may be particularly dusty or greasy; the
condenser should be cleaned periodically
for efficient refl'igerator operation.
Cleaning the condenser.
The condenser is located inside the back
of the refrigeratol: _Ib access it, first unplug
the refi'igerato_: Then remove the access

Careand cleaning oftherefrigerator.
Behind the Refrigerator
Be careflll when moving the refi'igerator
away from the wall. All types of floor
coverings can be damaged, particularly
cushioned coverings and those with
embossed surfaces.
Pull the refiigerator straight out and remm
it to position by"pushing it straight in.
Moving the refrigerator in a side direction
may result in damage to tim floor covering
or refiigeraton
Whenpushingtherefrigeratorback,makesure
youdon'traftoverthepowercordor icemaker
supplyline [onsomemodels).
Preparing for Vacation
For long v'acations or absences, remove
food and unplug the refiigeraton Clean the
interior with a baking soda solution of one
tablespoon (15 ml) of baking mda to one
quart (1 1) ofwatel: Leave the doors open.
Set the icemaker power switch to the 0 (Off)
position and shut off the water supply to
tim refiigeraton
If"the temperature can drop below
freezing, have a qualified servicer drain the
water supply system (on some models) to
prevent serious property damage due to
flooding.
Preparing to Move
Secure all loose items such as grille, shelves and drawers by taping tbem securely
in place to prevent damage.
Be sure the refrigerator stays in an upright position during moving.

This light is located above the top drawer __M_er replacing with an appliance
v bulb of the same or lower wattage,
Unplug the refrigeraml: replace the shield.
_ Grasp the lip at the bottom of the light _ Plug the refrigerator back in.
shield and pull it up and forward.
Freezer Compartment
Unplug dm refiigerator.
_ Remove the shelf just below light shield.
(The shelf will be easier to remove if it
is emptied first.)
Lift up on the light shield to remove.
_M}er replacing with an appliance
bulb of the same or lower wattage,
reinstall the shield by hanging it
fi-orn the three tabs.
_ Reinstall the shelf and plug the
refiigerator back in.
Dispenser
Unplug the refiigerator.
_The bulb is located on the dispenser
under the control panel.
Remove the lightbulb by turning
it counterclockwise.
Replace the bulb with a bulb of the
same size and wattage.
Plug the refrigerator back in.

REFRIGERATOR LOCATION
•Do not install the refiigerator where the temperature
will go below 60°F (16°C) becmlse it will not run often
enough to maintain proper mmperatures.

Adoor clearance of 3/4" (19 mm) is needed for a 90 °
door opening which provides better access to the food
storage area.
ROLLERS
The rogers have 3 purposes:
• Rollers adjust so the door closes easily when opened
about halfway.
Rollers adjust so the refrigerator is firmly positioned
on tim floor and does not wobble.
Rollers allow you to move the refiigerator away fi'om
the wall for cleaning.
To adjust the rollers, remove the base grille by pulling it
out at the bottom.
Turn the roller at_usting screv_ clockwise to raise the
refi'igerato_; counterclockwise to lower it. Use an
adjustable wrench (3/8" hex head bolt) or pliers.
To replace base grille, line up tim clips on back of grille
between the bar and the hottom of the cabineL Push
forward until grille snaps into place.

Mter leveling, make sure that doors are even at the top.
To make the doors even, adjust the refrigerator door.
O Using a 5/16' socket wrench, turn the door adjusting
screw to tim right to raise the door, to the left to lower
it. (A nylon plug, embedded in the threads of the pin,
prevents tim pin from turning unless a wrench is
O used.)

INSTALLING THE WATER LINE
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Recommended copper w-ater supply kits are WX8X2,
WX8X3 or WX8X4, depending on the amount of
robing you need. Approved plastic water supply lines
are GE SmartConnect TM Refrigerator 'lllbing
(WX08X10002, WX08X10006, WX08X10015 and
WX08X10025).
When connecting your refrigerator to a GE Reverse
Osmosis Water System, the only approved installation is
with a GE RVKit. For other reverse osmosis water
systems, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
If the water supply to the refrigerator is from a Reverse
Osmosis Water Fihration System P-xND the refrigerator
also has a water filter, use the refrigerator's filter bypass
plug. Using the refrigerator's water filtration cartridge
in col_junction with the RO filter can resuh in hollow
ice cubes and slower water flow from the w-ater
dispensen
This water line installation is not warranted by the
refrigerator or icemaker manulgcturer. Follow these
instructions carefully to minimize the risk of expensive
water damage.
Water hammer (water bmlging in the pipes) in house
plumbing can cause damage to refrigerator parts and
lead to w-ater leakage or flooding. Call a qualified
plumber to correct water hammer before installing
the wamr supply line to the reli'igeramr.
_ib prevent burns and product damage, do not hook
up the w-ater line to the hot water line.
If you use your refrigerator before connecting the
water line, make sure the icemaker power swdtch is in
the 0 (Off) position.
Do not install the icemaker tubing in areas where
temperatures fall below freezing.
When using any electrical device (such as a power
drill) during installation, be sure the device is double
insulated or grounded in a manner to prevent the
hazard of electric shock, or is battery powered.
zM1installations must be in accordance with local
plumbing code requirements.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
• Copper or GE SmartConnect TM Refrigerator Tubing
kit, 1/4" outer diameter to connect the refrigerator
to the water supply. If using copper, be sure both ends
of the tubing are cut square.
To determine how much tubing you need: measure
the distance fi'om the w-ater valve on the back of the
refrigerator to the water supply pipe. Then add 8'
(2.4 m). Be sure there is sufficient extra robing (about
8' [2.4 m] coiled into 3 turns of about 10" [25 cm]
diameter) to allow the refrigerator to move out from
the wall after installation.
GE SmartComlect TM Refrigerator Tubing Kits are
available in the following lengths:
2' (.6 m) -WX08X10002
6' (1.8 m) -WX08X10006
15' (4.6 m) - WX08X10015
25" (7.6 m) - WX08X10025
Be sure that the kit you select allows at least 8' (2.4 m)
as described above.
NOTE: The only GE approved plastic tubing is that
supplied in GE SmartConnect TM Refrigerator Tubing
kits. Do not use any other plastic water supply line
because the line is under pressure at all times. Certain
types of plastic will crack or rupture with age and cause
water damage to your home.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED (CONT.)
• AGE water supply kit (containing tubing, shutoff
valve and fittings listed below) is available at extra
cost fi'om your dealer or from Parts and Accessories,
800.626.2002.
• A cold water supply. The water pressure must be
bem_een 20 and 120 p.s.i. (1.4_8.2 bar) on models
without a water filter and between 40 and 120 p.s.i.
(2.8-8.2 bar) on models with a ,a-ater filten
•Power drill.
•1/2" or adjustable wrench.
• Straight and Phillips blade screwdriver.
•Two 1/4" outer diameter compression nuts and
2 ferrules (sleeves)--to connect the copper tubing
to the shutoff valve and the refi'igerator
water valve.
OR
• If you are using a GE SmartConnecff MRefrigerator
Tubing kit, the necessary fittings are preassembled to
the tubing.
• If your existing copper water line has a flared fitting
at the end, you will need an adapter (available at
plumbing supply stores) to connect the water line to
the refi'igerator OR you can cut off the flared fitting
with a tube cutter and then use a compression fitting.
Do not cut formed end from GE SmartConnect TM
Refi'igerator tubing.
•Shutoff valve to connect to the cold water line.
The shutoff valve should have a wamr inlet with a
minimum inside diamemr of 5/32" at the point of
connection to the COLD WATER LINE. Saddle-type
shutoff valves are included in many water supply kits.
Before purchasing, make sure a saddle-ty'pe valve
complies with your local plumbing codes.
Install the shutoffvalve on the nearest frequently used
drinking wamr line.
[] SHUT OFF THE MAIN WATER
SUPPLY
Turn on the nearest faucet long enough to clear
the line of water.
[] CHOOSE THE VALVE LOCATION
Choose a location for the valve that is easily
accessible. It is best to connect into the side of a
vertical w-ater pipe. When it is necessary to connect
into a horizontal ,a-ater pipe, make the connection
to the top or side, rather than at the bottom,
to avoid drawing off any sediment from the
w-ater pipe.
[] DRILL THE HOLE FOR THE VALVE
Drill a 1/4" hole in the water pipe (even if using a
self-piercing valve) using a sharp bit. Remove may
burrs resuhing from drilling tim hole in the pipe.
Take care not to allow water to drain into the drill.
Failure to drill a 1/4" hole may"result in reduced
ice production or smaller cubes.

Tighten the clamp screws until the sealing washer
begins to swell.
NOTE: Do not overtighten or you may crush the
tubing.

Route the tubing between the cold water line and
the refrigerator.
Route the tubing through a hole drilled in the wall
or floor (behind the refi'igerator or adjacent base
cabinet) as close to the wall as possible.
NOTE: Be sure there is sufficient extra tubing
(about 8' [2.4 m] coiled into 3 turns of about 10"
[25 cm] diameter) to allow the refrigerator to move
out from the wall after installation.

Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve) for
copper robing onto the end of the tubing and
commct it to the shutoff valve.
Make sure the tubing is fhlly inserted into the valve.
Tighten the compression nut securely.

Refrigerator Tubing kit, insert the molded end
of the tubing into the shutoff valve and tighten
compression nut until it is hand tight, then tighten
one additional turn with a wrench. Overtightening
may cause leaks.

one quart (1 liter) of water has been flushed

plugged into the wall outlet.
• If your refrigerator does not have a water filtm,

has sand or particles that could clog the screen of
the refrigerator's water valve. Install it in the
water line near the refrigeramn If using a GE
SmartConnect TM Refrigerator Tubing kit, you
will need an additional robe (WX08X10002)

Some models have the refrigerator connection at
the end of tubing located outside the compressor
compartment access coven On other models, the
compressor compartment access cover must he
removed in order to access the refrigerator
connection at the water valve.
On models using the refrigeration connection at
the water valve, remove the plastic flexible cap.
Place the compression nut and ferrule (sleeve)
onto the end of the tubing 2_sshown. On a GE
SmartCommct Refrigerator Tubing kit, the nuts
are already assembled to the tubing.
[] CONNECT THE TUBING TO THE
REFRIGERATOR (CONT.)
Insert the end of the tubing into the refrigerator
connection as far as possible. While holding the
tubing, tighten the fitting.
For plastic tubing from a GE SmartConnect
Refrigerator 'lklbing kit, insert the molded end of
the robing into the refrigerator connection and
tighten the compression nut until it is hand tight,
then tighten one additional turn with a wrench.
Overtighrening may cause leaks.
Fasten the tubing into the clamp provided as
shown to keep it in position. You may need to pry
open the clamp.

zM'range the coil of tubing so that it does not vibrate
against the back of the refl'igerator or against the
wall. Push the refl'igerator back to the wall.
START THE ICEMAKER
Set the icemaker power switch m the I(On}position.
The icemaker will not begin m operate until it
reaches its operating temperature of 15°F (-9°C)
or below. It will then begin operation automatically
if the icemaker power switch is in the I(On}position.

NOTE: Ill lower water pressure conditions, the
water valve may"turn on up to 3 times to deliver
enough water to the icemaker.
