Issue 15 Installation and Operation
Diagnostic Testing
To help you restore service quickly in the event of problems, the Dual V. 34 provides diagnostics
for accurate detection of system faults, such as: Local Test, Local Loop Test Self-Test, Digital
Loopback, Remote Digital Loopback, Remote Digital Loopback Self-Test, and End-to-End Self-
Test. All of these tests can be used from a terminal or computer using AT commands, or from an
SNMP controller.
Local and Self-Tests can also be initiated from switches on the modem’s front panel. A front panel
Test Mode (TM) LED lights during all test modes, and indicates errors during Self Tests by flashing
to display detected errors.
Dual V.34 Modem Software
There are two types of computer software for use with a modem:
• terminal emulation software
• data communications software
Terminal emulation software essentially "downgrades" your computer to a dumb terminal. It allows
you to type at the keyboard and see responses on the video display or printer. Emulation programs
are often used to communicate with main-frame or mini-computers, and usually do not support disk
management or file transfers.
A full-featured data communications software package does allow file transfers, as well as
providing a dial directory, a script language for automated sessions, and a host of other features. Of
course, the more powerful and flexible a software package is, the more difficult it may be to master.
To take full advantage of the features of the SpectraComm Dual V.34 modem, your selected
program should allow turning off the autobaud feature. You should also be able to toggle both
XON/XOFF and hardware flow control. In addition, itshould supportseveral file transfer protocols
designed to be used with an error-correcting modem.
Modem Driver Software
The SpectraComm Dual V.34 modem is designed to interface seamlessly with Windows 95,
Windows 98, Windows 2000, and NT 4.0 via a dedicated modem device driver. You will need to
access the GDC internet site at www.gdc.com to download and install the GDC V.34 Modem
driver GDCV34.inf. The site also provides complete instructions for this procedure.

Issue 15 Installation and Operation
Security Solutions
GDC modems provide several built-in and optional security features, described briefly below,
which can function alone or in various combinations (Table 3-3). Optional security features are
installed at the factory at the time of purchase, or can be factory upgraded in the field. GDC
continually enhances the security features of its V.34 modems. For the latest information, please
check www.gdc.com or contact your GDC representative.
Built-in Password Security Features
With Online Security enabled in the answering GDC modem, access is protected by passwords
stored in the modem. This feature can be configured for Pass-thru or Callback operation. With Pass-
thru, the modems handshake, then the caller is prompted to enter a valid password. With Callback,
a callback phone number previously saved in the answering modem is used to connect with an
authorized caller. Up to 10 phone numbers can be stored in the modem.
With SteadFast Handshake Security enabled in GDC modems at the originating and answering
sites, the answering GDC modem verifies the originating modem’s SteadFast password. Passwords
must be previously stored in both modems.
RADIUS Security Option
RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) is an optional software feature for the
modem and SCM thatallows the modem to provide secure dial-in serial connections to the network.
In a RADIUS protected system, dial-in users will be authenticated through user names, passwords,
and challenged prompts coming from the modem and through the SCM to a RADIUS
authentication server.
• RADIUS Security also requires the SCM card and at least one RADIUS server.
• For additional modem-related information, refer to the Chapter 3 section in this manual on
RADIUS Security (Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service) .
For detailed SCM and RADIUS information, refer to the SpectraComm Manager Installation
& Operation Manual (048R303-000), Appendix B: SCM with RADIUS.
AES Encryption Option
AES Encryption employs the Advanced Encryption Standard which is a symmetric 128-bit block
data encryption technique that allows each modem to take transmit/receive asynchronous data and
encrypt/decrypt it on a dial-up or private line network. The user configures the modem for AES
Encryption by entering an encryption key and by typing expanded AT commands at one of the
modem’s management interface (Telnet via the SCM, the SCM craft port, or a terminal connected
to the modem’s DTE connector).
• A modem featured with AES Encryption is required at either end of the communication link
and with the same encryption key entered in both modems.
• A modem featured with AES Encryption does not support the following modem functions:
FAX, MNP10 (cellular link), sync compression, country codes other than USA and Canada,
TEAM configuration of SAM and encryption parameters.
Note For detailed configuration information, refer to Chapter 3 under the paragraphs on Security,
and the corresponding AT-command descriptions in Chapter 4.

SAM Authentication Option
When factory-optioned, the SC Dual V.34 modem can function as a Secure Access Modem (SAM)
in a Secure Access Controller (SAC) system. In this system, a SAC Administration Server, SAC
Access database, an Authentication server, Client desktop software, and the Secure Access modem
can authenticate remote users attempting to access protected network equipment, such as switches,
routers, multiplexers, etc. The Authentication Server generates the private key exchanged by the
modem and server, and the public key exchanged by the modem and remote user’s client software.
Each connection sets up a secure tunnel that passes AES-encrypted data to the authorized user.
When a user terminates a management session, the Secure Access Modem requests a connection to
the Authentication Server to obtain a new private key, thus preventing further access from the
previous remote user or intruders.
• The Secure Access Controller (SAC) system requires client software and dedicated servers. For
setup and configuration information, refer to the documentation that accompanies those
components.
• A SAM modem does not support the following functions: FAX, MNP10 (cellular link), sync or
async compression, private line operation, TEAM configuration of SAM and encryption
parameters.
• A SAM modem will support the following parameters only: country code for USA or Canada
(001), %Sncommands %S16 or %S17, Analoop with %S0, RTS-CTS Flow Control (\Q3).
