@ eefore You Begin
Thank you for purchasing an myshare SATA hard drive. This
installation guide provides instructions on how to install a SATA
hard drive in the myshare storage enclosure.
WhotYou Need
We recommend that you have the following items ready for the
SATA hard drive installation.
e Phillips screwdriver
o 3.5-inch SATA hard drive kit *
* Two SATA hard drives are required for RAID configuration.
ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Precautions
Always observe the following precautions before you install the
SATA hard drive:
o Do not remove a component from its protective packaging
until you are ready to install it.
r Wear a wrist-grounding strap and attach it to a metal part of
the myshare storage enclosure before handling components.
e lf a wrist strap is not available, maintain contact with the
enclosure throughout any procedure requiring ESD
protection.
@ lnstalling a SATA Hard Drive
The myshare storage enclosure supports 3.5-inch SATA or SATA
ll hard drives.
NOTE: Before performing any hardware installation, protect your
data by backing up your existing hard drive before installing a
new hard drive. Refer to the myshare Storage Enclosure
Hardware Guide for procedures.
WARNING: Failure to properly turn off the system before you
start installing components may cause serious damage.
1 Turn off the myshare storage enclosure and all the peripherals
connected to it.
2 Unplug all cables from the power outlets.
3 Placethe enclosure on a flat,stable surface.
4 Observe the ESD precautions when handling a system
component.
5 Access the drive bays by removing the three screws that
secure the myshare storage enclosure cover (1).
6 Slide the cover towards the
rear of the enclosure about
one half inch and lift it off
the chassis and put it aside

7 Remove the new hard drive from its protective packaging.
B Attach the drive brackets to the new hard drive.
('1) Fit the three tabs on the bracket into
the holes located on the hard drive.
(2) Attach the second bracket to
the other side ofthe hard drive.
9 Slide the new hard drive all the way into the drive bay.
NOTE: Make sure to align the drive connectors to the end points
in the myshare storage enclosure. Gently push the drive until
the connectors are properly engaged.
Position the system cover over the chassis so that the tabs
on the cover fit the tab openings in the enclosure.
Slide the cover towards the front of the chassis until it is fully
closed (1).
Secure the system cover with the three screws you removed
in step 5 (2).
1 3 Reconnect the myshare storage enclosure's power adapter.
14. Power on the enclosure, then wait at least ten seconds.
The two Hard Drive (HDD1 and HDD2) and USB Backup LED
indicators on the front panel of the myshare storage
enclosure lights up to indicate system is initializing. After
about four minutes, the Power/System Status and Hard
Drive LED indicators lit up green to indicate the hard drive is
properly installed. lf a hard drive is not properly installed the
Hard Drive LED turns off or if the enclosure detects a drive is
not clean (with data stored on it) the Hard Drive LED lits up
amber.
Refer to the LED Activity lndicators table to determine the
status and description.
NOTE: lf you are installing a hard drive that has a capacity larger
than 160 GB, the enclosure takes slightly longer to detect or
initialize the new drives. The maximum drive capacity that the
enclosure can read is 1TB.
1 5. Clean the contents stored on the drive and reinstall it ifthe LED
indicator lits amber. lf the problem persists, contact your dealer.

Q Configure the New Hard Drive
NOTE: Setting up a RAID configuration requires at least two hard
drives.
1 Open the System Configuration Utility from a client
computer connected to the myshare storage enclosure.
Refer to the enclosure's documentation for detailed
in struction s.
2 On the left pane, click Volume Management.
Click the Manage Volume tab to display the drive's
specifications and current status.
Click the Manage RAID tab to set up an array. Options
include RAID 0 (Stripe), RAID 1 (Mirror), or Span (JBOD).

5 Select a RAID option then follow the related instructions.
lf you are rebuilding a drive, the USB backup LED indieator
lits up green and the System Status LED indicator blinks.
After the RAID rebuild operation is completed the USB
Backup LED automatically turns off and the System Status
LED lits green.
Refer to section E for an overview of each RAID option.

@ nnto overview
RAID (Redundant Array of lndependent Disk Drives) refers to
an array of multiple independent hard drives that provide
high performance and reliability. RAID function depends on
the number of drives present and the RAID level you selected.
The myshare storage enclosure supports the following RAID
levels.
RAID 0 - Also known as stripping. All data are distributed
evenly to all existing drives. The two drives work in unison
to maximize system performance. However, RAID 0 has
high risks of data security. lf one drive fails then all data in
both drives will be lost.
RAID 1 - Also known as mirroring. Two hard drives are
required. Data written to one hard drive is simultaneously
duplicated to another hard drive. lf one drive fails, the
other drive continues to function as a single drive until the
failed drive is replaced.
JBOD (Just a Bunch of Drives) - Also known as spanning.
Two or more hard drives are required. Several hard drives
are configured as a single hard disk expanding the capacity
of the hard drive and results in a useable total capacity.
However, JBOD does not increase system performance or
data security.
@ f requentty Asked Questions
Can you install just one drive?
Yes. The myshare storage enclosure creates a degraded
RAID 1 (Mirror) volume for OS and data when only one hard
drive is installed. The degraded volume will be recovered
when a second hard drive is added to the enclosure.
lf you want to configure the drive to other RAID levels, you
must first back-up all data stored on the volume, add a new
disk and use the System Configuration Utility to select
another RAID type.
Can you instoll different cdpacity hard drives?
Yes. The default RAID configuration for a data volume is Span,
which works fine on different capacity hard drives. However,
if you want to change the configuration to RAID 1 (Mirror),
the volume size equals to the size of the smaller hard drive.
Cqn I install a different type of hard drive?
i'ii r,=;,,1, ,,'1
No. The myshare storage
enclosure supports only
3.5-inch SATA and
SATA ll hard drives.

FAtrIA ,
Cqn I install hard drives from different manafocturers?
Yes. The myshare storage enclosure supports installation as
well as copying data from hard drives with different
ma n ufactu rers.
How many hard drives do I have to install to setup a RAID 0
or RAID 1 configuration?
Setting up a RAID configuration requires installation of two
SATA hard drives. World-class Technical Support
