2. Introduction
The Semmelweis Scanner allows immediate evaluation of hand hygiene technique evaluation
with a special alcoholic hand rub solution. To achieve this, the scanner employs harmless UV-
A light exposure. The system provides objective overall quality assessment scores and creates
reports and statistics. The innovative technology of the Semmelweis Scanner is made primarily
for education and plays a major role in the control of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs).
The Semmelweis Scanner has been designed, manufactured and tested to comply with the
standard requirements of EN 61326-2-6:2005 and EN 61010-1:2001, Safety Provisions
Regarding Electric Measuring & Control Equipment.
Conformity with the above-mentioned standards is documented and proved by the Semmelweis
Scanner’s label.
The device with CE mark corresponds to 2004/108/EC and 2006/95/EC directives.
The Semmelweis Scanner is only to be used for education and hand hygiene training.
Using the device does not substitute applying proper hand hygiene protocols.

2.1. Symbols used
Signs on the device
It might cause irreversible damage or harm to the user of the Product or the
Product itself if this instruction is not followed.
UV radiation hazard.
Electronic and electrical machines, batteries and dry cells to be collected
separately. Electronic device that needs to be recycled.
Instrument which has passed the CE-test. The CE mark shall be placed on the
instrument’s label followed by the CE number.
Symbol for “refer to User Guide”.
The symbol shall be accompanied by the name and address of the manufacturer,
adjacent to the symbol.
The device is designed only for indoor use.
This symbol shall be accompanied by the manufacturer’s serial number.
Signs in the User Guide

2.2. Intended use
The Semmelweis Scanner is intended to be used by any staff member of an institution; in
various areas e.g., healthcare, biotechnology, food or hospitality industry, where the correct
performance of hand hygiene is inevitable to maintain high-quality standards. The device may
only be used for training purposes and hand hygiene compliance monitoring. Complete
compliance monitoring cannot be achieved with the Product. The Product may be used in a
domestic environment as well, under the same conditions.
The Semmelweis Scanner is designed to be used indoors, in a furniture-top (with appropriate
height) or wall-mounted position. Rolling stands can be ordered as an option to make relocation
of the scanners within the institution easier. The initial assembly is done by the producer or the
distributor’s qualified personnel. The device must be positioned in a way, which allows easy
access for the users (recommended at a height of 120-140 cm (4-4.5 feet) of the hand insertion
area, above the ground).
The alcoholic hand rub to be used with the Semmelweis Scanner is flammable, you must keep
the product and its accessories away from fire.
Keep the product and its accessories away from fire, extreme heat and direct
sunlight.
Use of the Product does not substitute the official hand hygiene quality requirements of your
organization.
2.3. Notes regarding operational safety
Do not touch the inside of
the device.
The surface of the LEDs and electronics may be
hot.
Wash hands after
measurement.
The used hand rub or gel is typically licensed for
training use only. Wash hands with soap and water
before returning to work.
Boot time: 1-2 minutes after
a complete restart.
Keep away from sunlight.
Do not expose the device to direct sunlight.
Clean device with soft tissue
and non-alcoholic detergent.
Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents or
strong detergents to clean the Product.
Disconnect the main plug.
Disconnect main plugs before any kind of
intervention into the device.

Your device is a product of superior design and craftsmanship and should be treated with care.
Please follow the suggestions below.
•It is forbidden to disassemble the slide cover of the device.
•It is forbidden to touch the internal parts of the device.
•The electric connection should be made to grounded outlets only.
•Do not place any object on top of the Product. This may cause malfunction.
•Keep the Product dry. Precipitation, humidity and all types of liquids or moisture can
contain minerals that will corrode electronic circuits. If your Product does get wet, allow
it to dry completely.
•Do not use or store the Product in dusty, dirty areas. Its moving parts and electronic
components can be damaged.
•Do not store the Product in hot areas. High temperatures can shorten the lifetime of
electronic devices, damage batteries and warp or melt certain plastics.
•Do not store the Product in cold areas. When the Product returns to its normal
temperature, moisture condensed inside the Product may damage electronic circuit
boards.
•Do not attempt to open the Product.
•Do not drop, knock or shake the Product. Rough handling can break internal circuit
boards and fine mechanics.
•Do not plug in the Product to a socket after removing the slide cover. Touching the LED
lights and the electronics may cause burn injuries.
•Do not place the Product on a sloping or unstable cart, stand or table, as it may fall.
•Do not paint the product. Paint can clog the moving parts and hinder proper operation.
•It is forbidden to make any software or hardware modifications to the Product or its
official attachments.
•Unauthorized modifications or attachments could damage the Product and may violate
regulations governing radio equipment.
These suggestions apply equally to your Products and its parts, or any accessories. If the Product
is not working properly, please contact your distributor or the manufacturer. Do not try to
repair the Product.

2.4. Cleaning instructions
Before cleaning, disconnect the unit from the main power supply.
●The side cover of the Semmelweis Scanner is aluminium, thus strong corrosive
substances must not be used for cleaning.
●When cleaning the Product, avoid using rough materials, sudden shocks and
scratches.
●Do not rub the Product. Dry particles or dust may scratch the surface.
●Use only high-quality, acid-free and solvent cleaners. The wrong choice of cleaning
agent can make aluminium, glass or other painted surfaces opaque.
●Larger items should be first cleaned from dust gently, taking care not to scratch the
surface.
●To clean, use a soft, clean cloth.
●When cleaning foiled objects, be aware, the cleaning agent might soak the film.
Recommend cleaning agent: alcohol-based „Clin Windows” for cleaning the glass only. Use
the bottle at a foaming position. It is forbidden to clean or touch the inner parts of the
Product.
The glass cover of the monitor and the hand placement areas are most likely to be cleaned. The
surroundings, where the device is mounted can be cleaned with conventional detergents. Make
sure to remove all residue of the hand rub on the table and in the proximity of the device.
It is forbidden to clean the hand placement area and the plastic parts of the Product with
alcohol-based detergents.
After cleaning and complete drying , reconnect the Product to the main power supply.

3.2. RFID (Radio frequency identification)
For unique identification, the Semmelweis Scanner uses radio frequency identification (RFID).
The institutions also have the opportunity to use their own ID cards. In this case, the cards must
meet the following criteria, and should be tested with the Product by the manufacturer or
distributor prior to use:
13.56 MHz cards:
Mifare 1k, Mifare 4k,
Mifare UltraLight and
NFC NTAG203
125 kHz cards:
EM 4001 or compatible
cards
It is recommended touse the Semmelweis Scanner with ISO14443A compatible
cards only. There are slight differences in RFID cards from different
manufacturers. It is recommended to test the particular RFID card with the
Product to make sure it is working properly.
Please note that the Scanner can only operate either in 125 kHz or 13.56 MHz mode at a time.

The change between these modes can be set via the Administrative pages of the Reporting
System.
External card or barcode reader can be connected to the Semmelweis Scanner.
Connecting an external card reader incurs additional implementation costs. Ask for a unique
offer from your contact person.
4. Getting Started
4.1. Unpacking the Device
The Semmelweis Scanner
may arrive in a road box for
road/air transport.
Open the box by lifting the
lock.
Open the box. Check whether
your package contains all
parts intact. (see 3. Product
Package)
The box contains a packing
list. If everything has
arrived as listed, please sign
it.
Lift out the Semmelweis
Scanner by holding at the
hollow centre. Place on a
horizontal surface with the
glass cover facing up.
4.2. Installation
Installation of the device is performed by the manufacturer or the distributor’s qualified
personnel. The Semmelweis Scanner needs to be set up on a stand or mounted on the wall in
such a way that users can easily get access to it. The scanning area should be at a convenient
height.
The Semmelweis Scanner needs AC power supply; it must be mounted near a wall socket. The
socket must be grounded.

A hand rub dispenser must be available near the device, in order to have access to the special
UV labeled training product. Please feel free to consult the supplier for optimal arrangement of
the dispenser to maximize the benefit of the system.

The Semmelweis Kiosk is integrated with a digital signage solution (WallBoard). The content
can be managed through a central web interface, where scheduling, translations, event specific
content and many more actions are supported.

4.3. Using the integrated stand

with one hand while lifting
up the Semmelweis Scanner
with the other hand.
The integrated stand can be adjusted to three different heights. While adjusting the height, the
base of the stand needs to touch the surface, you can adjust the height by pressing the button on
the stand and lifting the scanner.
4.4. Inserting the SIM card and connecting to the mobile network
If a SIM card has been provided by the manufacturer, then it is already in the Product. You can
skip this step. The SIM card should be listed on the ‘packing list’.
If you purchase the SIM card, please note that it must be a standard-sized one.
SIM parameters: data plan: 100 Mbyte/month is suitable for 400
measurements (e.g., 20/day)
Disconnect main plugs before any kind of intervention into the device.
On the right side of the device, there are the following
ports: 1. SIM card, 2. Ethernet, 3. USB. The USB and
Ethernet (LAN) ports are for service use only and are
not required for regular use.

Insert the SIM card into the SIM port with a flat end
tweezer. Using the end of the tweezers, push the SIM
card in until it clicks.
If you need to remove the SIM card, use tweezers. Push
the SIM card until it clicks, then gently remove it.
The Product should automatically connect to the mobile network. This can be validated by a
test scan and logging into the Reporting System to check if the scan has been uploaded. If the
scanner cannot connect to the network, turn it off and unplug it for at least 10 seconds, then
plug it back in and turn it on again. Always use tweezers for inserting or removing the SIM
card.
4.5. Connecting the Scanner to power supply
Connect the power cable to
the AC/DC adapter.
You can find the plug for
the power supply at the
bottom of the scanner. Note
the orientation of the pins.
Plug in the AC/DC adapter
to a socket (110-230 V, 50-
60 Hz). The socket must be
grounded.
Always plug in the Product first, and then the socket. A reversed order can cause the
power switch to malfunction.
4.6. Switching On/Off
You can turn the system on with the power button located on the left bottom corner of the
surface of the Product.

on (1-2 secs). This is a
capacitive switch
requiring a close contact,
but no significant
pressure.
First, you will see the
HandInScan logo and the
current software version
number.
A welcome screen will
appear, asking you to log in
with your RFID card.
Please hold your RFID app. 1 cm above the LEDs at the bottom
right corner of the surface to log in.
In order to turn off the system, hold your finger on the power switch for at least 6 seconds.
4.7. Connecting to WiFi
The Semmelweis Scanner has built-in WiFi connection capabilities for:
•Sending measurement data to the Reporting System
•Remote support, software update
•Diagnostics, monitoring (under a maintenance contract)
Network settings (such as WiFi SSID and password) are set up at the factory before shipping
based on information provided in the Purchase Order.
The default WiFi network is always set:

The default WiFi network can be created e.g. as a mobile hotspot if none of the other
connections are available. Setting up a mobile hotspot for your default WiFi network:

If you need to modify the WiFi network settings of your scanner (e.g., adding a new network),
please contact your primary support contact.
●WiFi protocols supported: 802.11 b/g/n
●WiFi frequency supported: 2.4 GHz
●Security: WEP 64/128 bit, WPA, WPA2
Please note that 5 GHz WiFi networks are not supported.
4.8. Custom settings
Custom settings can be entered via the Reporting System under Administration and WiFi
Settings tabs.
A table appears with all the configured WiFi networks. These network settings can be viewed
/ edited /deleted by clicking on the appropriate button.
New WiFi networks can be added via clicking on the + sign in the top right corner of the table.
On the form one can set up the security details of the WiFi network.
Security can be:
●WPA/WPA2 Personal: in this case only the pre shared password need to be entered.
●WPA/WPA2 Enterprise: in this case a username and a password need to be entered.
